"Thailand is so irresistible, that a tourist will spend $2,000 to $4,000 for quarantine, spend a two week prison sentence in a hotel room, and then be subject to extreme restrictions? What planet are these people living on?"

"the longer tourists stay away from Thailand, the harder it will be to get them to come back."

Absolutely correct on both counts, and in many cases I think they will NEVER come back having found more "tourist friendly" destinations. And of course, you have the knock on effect of them telling their friends and neighbours and workmates how "Amazing" Thailand really is!

    Excellent post and so true

"Under this plan only those from countries deemed to have the virus under control would be allowed entry and they would then be subject to quarantine and severe restrictions on where they are allowed to go."

"Countries that would be eligible were China, Taiwan, the US and those in Europe"

With more than  5,000,000 (5 MILLION) cases, and HUNDREDS more each day (sometimes THOUSANDS) I would hardly deem them to have the virus under control - or do the Thai politicians believe everything that comes out of Trump's mouth in the same way as they believe everything their own Ministers say?

And even in Europe, with the number of cases in the UK sitting at 308,134, with 46,413 deaths and hundreds of new cases each day resulting in places like Leicester under lockdown again. and many other places facing new restrictions, I wouldn't think that they have it "under control"

(P.S. I am a Brit, and the way my countrymen ignore the rules is sickening - kudos to the majority of the Thai people for at least recognising the danger, and taking the advice seriously - pity the Army didn't!)

Thailand has a lot of work to do if it wants free spending farangs to come back here when they open up the country again, and asking people to quarantine for 2 weeks isn't one of then and neither is jumping through hoops to get a 3 month visa.

The Farangs will find other countries to go to if Thailand doesn't become more Farnag tourist friendly.

The requirement for quarantine is not unique to Thailand.

Most countries in Europe are requiring tourists to quarantine upon arrival. France, Germany, Austria, Czech Rep, Estonia, Ireland and Bulgaria to name a few. Also N. America, many countries in S. America and Australia have quarantine rules for travelers in place.

And yet many are still holidaying this summer.

People here just wanna bash Thailand. The Thai government has many-many deficiencies in the way the country is run but all these armchair politicians here act as if they could run a country any better?

Nobody's Thai bashing, but there has been lots of Farang bashing in Thailand.

If Thailand is serious about getting Farang tourists back it needs to be a lot Farang friendly tahn is has been in the recent past, otherwise Farangs will just go elsewhere.

  5. I seriously think that the junta has about one month to save the Thai economy for the next 3 years.

If they don't do anything to rein in the strong Baht and ease visa restrictions for the spending Farang tourists, Thailand will go from a 2nd world country back to a 3rd world country very quickly.

Miserly spending Chinese will not get Thailand out of this huge black hole it is in a the moment.

    Farang spending will save jobs

I would say 3 Million unemployed is a very conservative figure; 6 million may be nearer the mark and there is already an undercurrent of protest in The North about what the Brainless of Bangkok are going to do about it apart from offering 'Holiday Vouchers' !

Indeed, and probably more than 6 million.

The Thai economy is heading for one huge train crash unless the government get's serious about addressing the obvious problems

I find it idiocy that people think tourism is just going to pop back as if the world hasn't suffered a gigantic economic impact. You can't even send a letter or package regular mail to many nations right now. Average people have lost tons on the crisis and millions have lost their jobs. Nothing is going to come back as it once was. Besides long before the virus, Thailand was going down. Younger people aren't interested in Thailand the same way. Many see Asia as the source of the outbreak so that will scare off many as well. The only thing that might drive people to visit Asia in higher amounts than normal is poverty or on the extreme end such as a long term economic and social collapse of some western nations like the US.

What might get people to visit Thailand is easier entry rules and a weaker Baht.

Other countries in the region are going to be more welcoming than Thailand and that will create wealth and jobs for them countries

     They really won't.

Their economy is also not reliant on tourism.

In this case i think they will. There is a lot of money to be made from tourism in this part of the world now that Thailand has really closed it's borders and Vietnam will want some of that pie, along with the Philippines.

When people go to Vietnam and the Philippines and see what they can gt for there money there compared to Thailand a lot wont be returning to Thailand.

It's different for people like me who are married to Thais and i have been for many years, but if you are a single bloke i say go for it in Vietnam and the Philippines.
