  1. direct flights means you won't make change of plane basically, on some routes a refuel touchdown or take more pax is made and if you continue on same plane then it is considered direct.

Yep no direct flights from UK other than Heathrow to Bangkok now?

Did anyone ever fly with Phuket Air when they took on 747 from China/KLM, they were direct aswell from Gatwick if I remember correctly?

  2. And also you could give your parents some reassurance by comparing the US consular state of affairs view of Thailand to that of Cambodia with regards to threats of state and security, crime, victims of crime, medical facilities and traffic safety and road concerns, etc. Thailand appears to be a traveller friendly destination. thumbsup.gif

  3. Why should we need to buy insurance for a cancellation by the company. Failure to provide services should be an automatic refund

If my mechanic tells me he can't fix my car, I don't pay him. If a restaurant doesn't bring my food, I don't pay. What is the point of this insurance?

Insurance is for in case airlines screw up your holiday, e.g delays that cause you to miss other flights, extended stay, hotel cancellations, etc. Most airlines will pay a rate per hour above a minimun e.g if delay for more than 6 hours. But I don't know if they really pay as I have never experience such lengthy delaus. This Nok Air was the first - and the first - and they didn't want to pay! Huh...so no more buying insurance for me - read the fine print and you will find they are robbers.

I think its a case of the attitude of 'reap off' by Thai i suramce companies. I buy annual travel insurance coverage from AIG in Singapore, and never had any problems making a claim - from delayed flights to damaged/lost luggage. Coverage is worldwide as I bought the version that matches the travels I intend to make that year. Even falling seriously sick overseas and having to be evacuated back home is covered. I have had a friend who needed that and AIG even arranged the evacuation by air. Travel insurance is essential for anyone who travel frequently. Just need to pick the right insurer.

Spot on! That's what I've been told and this is what I will do from now on - Buy from AIG in SIngapore.

Really don't think any underwriter would pay out if a route is cancelled as the cost of your fare should be refunded by the airline.

  4. Just booked to LOS Air Asia. Am not checking baggage. Max allowable cabin weight - all up 7K. I shall be wearing 7 shirts. 7 prs underpants, 7 prs socks. one jacket. Spare pair of shoes go in jacket pockets. Actually I now travel very light. The freedom of not having to worry about checked luggage is great. Took me years to work this out.

biggrin.png Could get someone to make you a massive Rastafarian hat and take a further 2 pairs of jeans, light weight sweater, jesus sandals, waterproof kagool, laptop, laptop charger and a copy of south east asia on a shoe string.

Seriously though, those who say checked luggage used to always be free on short/mid haul flights, just because it was in with the cost doesn't mean it was free.

  5. exterminator,

Unfortunately, you can read the policy disclosure statement prior to selecting it - granted it's on another page but it's available...

Having read through it, the section that relates to your case is a page of contradictions.

The policy at first covers certain reasons for cancellation and then goes onto to exclude those very reasons in the next part.

    What a clusterf**k of nonsense...

Yes, I probably missed it - never in my travels (which is very often) have I ever experienced 2 cancellations on one booking. I don't blame the airline as it was cancelled due to technical problems..i'll rather be grounded than take a risk in the air. But the insurance IS nonsense.

Like other posts have questioned, why should the insurer pay out when Nok Air should just refund the cost?

  6. Nok Air cancelled my flight from Udon to Bangkok, with insurance, while I'm in Laos, tried to email them, full mailbox, twice, 3 phone calls, stuck on hold till I hungup, finally got an email to them ,no response and I ended up flying direct to BKK on Lao central so when I get to BKK, no Nok Air booth at BKK, so they just burned me for the ticket, no nothing, and I;m back in the states so yeah why bother when you can't even get a response from them

I replied to wrong post sorry.

  7. You guys will always be farangs here, no matter how many years or how much money you give them. I always say "thai people" when i talk about them, just like they do, so i wont feel bad when they call me the farang. I'm a farang and they are the thai people, the thai sister, thai brother, thai mother, thai friend. And i prononce it always bad so they think i'm saying that they are dead...

You will never change them, maybe you can get them to call you by your name when they see you, but they will always refer you as the farang when talking in private. Because for them you are just an income source and because most of the thai people don't have any education. Don't get mad because uneducated thai people call you farang.

Another coping mechanism would be to replace the word farang with "the white dude" and then simpy refer to every one else around you as slant eyes?

  8. How many posters celebrate Christmas every year?

Do you all visit Church, or hold some kind of religious acknowledgement to the reason behind the event?

I think the way Songkran is changing is one of the results of 'westernization' of Thailand.

Wait a minute here, you're comparing the celebration of the Thai new year (fun) to the celebration of the birth of Christ. Apples and oranges?

I was making an analogy between the two, but to make a point - questioning whether or not the Songkran ( Farang do not understand and therefore should not take part ) brigade, known hereafter as the SFDNUATSNTPB, followed their own high standards regarding celebrating religious festivals.

Got yer. I think everyone should enjoy the festivities it falls on the hottest dryest time of year in Thailand although it must piss those off who live in or close to a tourist center where it goes to the extreme?

Back to your analogy the birth of christ falls on or close to the winter solstice (so we are told) in the northern hemisphere these are darkest winter days. It was tradition along before the introduction of christianity to hold festivities at this time, burning of the yuletide log, decorations, excessive drinking and eating, gifts, having fun basically or trying to.

  10. Next time instead of using a aloy mak, say to them sap illi der.

Means same as so delicious, and they always smile when a falang uses it.

    sap......illi......der

Just say it phonetically? no inflections?

A lady of my acquaintance tells me that this is an isaan term. So that should stand you in good stead shortly. wink.png

it's Lao dialect, Sap or Sep I know means the same as Aroi. Lao dialect they use what sounds like Boar instead of Mai.

    Sep Boar = Aroi Mai.

So if you know someone who is from far north east isaan (most of Pattaya) and they are chomping on something, you can cheerfully enquire Sep Boar!

To which they will reply with enthusiasm Sep! or Sluurp!

  11. Come??? blink.png

I'll need to be careful with that one mellow.png

you must have heard - Ma, Layo Layo! (Come on hurry up) to which you reply - Na Tee Khap! (Just a minute)

Then you need to learn how you say, put your knickers on love, make us a cup of tea!

  12. What if you're just 'stout' of stature by nature???

If they're going to start picking on people who make travel unpleasant then they should start with the garlic breathed, then the snorers, then them with unruly brats, then fidgiters and then people with glasses who need to clean the bloody things every 20 minutes - elbows everywhere...

I don't think this is about people who make travel unpleasant, but about those who are massively overweight paying the same fare as a 10 year old child. IMHO, this is not a bad way to set fares. Plus, might help that 200Kg traveler shed a bit???? Which would be a great thing.

As the article stated, Samoa has some of the largest people on the planet. This policy makes sense. Again, IMHO.

    wai2.gif

You are absolutely wrong in stating that this policy makes sense.

It is just a move from the airline guys to let you pay more.

Mind, next step the average weight will become a standard weight of 75 kilo, and the standard height 175 cm

Anybody heavier or taller will pay more.

Quite simple, this is another move of those money grabbers to steal more from travellers.

And no, this is not a good move.

Do remember, if this succeeds, the chairs will become even smaller.

It makes quite good sense to the airline though and why not, I've heard of other small domestic airlines weighing passengers with luggage at check in, more to do with calculating the fuel etc because of small runways on islands and so on and not actually charging extra but really in this case it would make good business to do so imo?

On a larger scale, no it would cause to many issues. You can have a standard on luggage allowance but people, surely not?

I can imagine booking flights, good god Maud, your fat arse has just cost another £80 supplement again! And whoever mentioned the fat ass check points at the airport clap2.gif
