Explosion strikes annual rocket festival in Roi Et: 30 injured
F Groenen replied to george's topic in Isaan News
We were at this event 2 years ago, watched 4 rockets go up, but left when some idiots started shooting at eachother. Traffic was a mess and unless things changed this year, a response without delay would have been impossible. Safety is last on the list and we kept our distance from the rocket firing area. -
BOI LTR important to maintain qualifications
F Groenen replied to Presnock's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
The 'one year reporting' is limited to confirming your local address to immigration at any office in Thailand. And this can be avoided by taking a trip out of Thailand, as the return date resets the one-year report clock. A full review of all qualifications after five years of LTR is expected, but no rules have been set yet. -
The absurdity of the LTR handling
F Groenen replied to SingAPorn's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I applied on Oct.1 2022 for LTR-WFT. The process took 7 weeks, mostly due to me having to renew my health insurance. Getting in touch with BOI can be somewhat of a challenge, but once you reach one of their officers, they are always helpful and courteous. Since I have been in TH already many years, all my non-english documents have already been translated in the past. Once you get them certified they can be used for years. -
Ask for CEA test with your blood work. This is an indicator of bowel cancer. Not included in the standard blood tests. There are also AFP (liver), CA19-9 (digestive) and PSA (prostate) indicators. Still nothing safer than colonoscopy every five years. I started at 40, since both parents passed away from cancer. The cost can vary a lot and price may not include all services, leading to surprising high bill afterwards. Shop around as the procedure is the same everywhere.

We have a Ford Ranger XLT 2x4 since 2018. Great truck with 2L diesel and 10-speed auto transmission. Made in Thailand and no problems. We selected the Ford over the Toyota for less plastic use in interior and positive reports by two friends with Rangers. Love the comfort of 4 doors and the flexibility of the pick-up bed.

Working for a UK Firm in Thailand

See if you qualify for Long Term Resident (LTR) Work From Thailand visa. https://ltr.boi.go.th It might be a perfect fit. -
I have no problem with anyone smoking weed, but please do it in your private residence so that I don't have to breathe the stink when I go out. Yes, it stinks to us non-users and makes some of us vomit. Far to often do I have to leave a public space, since someone feels they have the right to puff anywhere they want. Please respect others.

Opening bank account
F Groenen replied to Dave0206's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I did the same in 2010, on visa exempt. But this only seems to be accepted at Bangkok Bank main office in Silom. I did not have a certified copy of passport, but things may have changed. -
Colonoscopy: St. Louis, MedPark or Bangkok Hospital?
F Groenen replied to Y Chang's topic in Health and Medicine
I had a Colonoscopy and Gastroscopy at Bangkok Hospital 5 years ago in Hua Hin. The 'package price' was 45K, but after all the additional charges they conveniently left out of the 'package' the whole procedure was over 60K ! Additional charges included doctor fees, anesthesiologist, room charges and more.Since then I avoid Bangkok Hospitals, they offer great service but are more interested in charging as much as they can get away with. -
Thailand Ranks World’s 3rd Digital Nomad Haven
F Groenen replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
To add to your rant, even working for a large foreign company, the LTR-WFT is not safe. The large company can be held liable for having an employee in Thailand with all legal and tax implications. The BOI is refusing to document that the foreign company is not liable with a LTR-WFT employee in Thailand. -
Thailand Ranks World’s 3rd Digital Nomad Haven
F Groenen replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Sadly, the Thai authorities have not made rules for digital nomads and them working from Thailand remains illegal. Even the LTR-WFT visa does excludes 95% of digital nomads and for those that do qualify for LTR-WFT, they put their employer at risk of Permanent Establishment rules. Hopefully these issues will get addressed soon and we will have a legal Digital Nomad community in Thailand, contributing to Thailand. -
I have been with AA Insurance 4 years. They provide insurance for foreigners (foreigner owned). www.aainsure.net No hassle insurance. I have not had a claim so cannot comment on their response, but I have heard it is good. Offices in Hua Hin, Pattaya, Bangkok and Phuket.

LTR and the 800,000 Baht Bank Account
F Groenen replied to HerewardtheWake's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
LTR visa's are issued for 5 years. At 5 years you can renew for a 2nd 5 years, (currently) it says 'no cost'. But qualifications will be checked and you likely need to have the 800K in the bank, (currently) no duration is specified. -
Try Motoaholic (used to be Kawasaki), just South of the airport on Hwy-4. I get my Kawasaki 650 serviced there. https://www.kawasakimotoaholic.com Siam Handlebar has shop with parts, but no service department. They do have an excellent bike wash.

Possibility for legally doing remote work
F Groenen replied to fruitspunch's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
The other possible visa would be the LTR-WFT visa, however you would not qualify for that given your current employment. -
Thailand’s wild, wooly and booming weed experiment
F Groenen replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Public place: a location to which all of the public has access and is not a place exclusively used for a private gathering or any other personal purposes. As long as a bar has an open door, it is a public place. Being 'cannabis friendly' should mean they have a seperate enclosed room for smoking joints. Just like the airport smoke rooms were. Anything less would be meet the requirement. -
Thailand’s wild, wooly and booming weed experiment
F Groenen replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Indeed perfectly normal as long as you don't bother the people around you. Smoke from a joint spreads throughout the whole room. Wine remains in your glass. So smoke your joint outside, away from others and we can all be happy. -
Thailand’s wild, wooly and booming weed experiment
F Groenen replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Actually it is not sensible, since smoking in public spaces is not allowed in Thailand. Sadly, by the time I alert a bar owner/manager of the offence, the sneeky smoker has hidden the cigarette and denies he/she smoked. The stench of hash remains in the air for a long time, but nothing illegal about that. The 'free' choice for me; stay and be sick or leave. Nice ? The better bands play what their audience wants. Put in more requests for your preferred music at your favorite hangout.
