Not an issue at all as topic is about Thailand’s overrated beaches.

Looking forward to your thread on “lovely hillside streams”. Can’t wait.

This is  what you get in Thailand. The whole thing not beach alone. Thais do it better.

Thailand does have some nice beaches, especially on the Andaman coast. But, to consider them, or describe them as world class, is a gross over estimation of the place. You want world class beaches?

Tikehau Island, French Polynesia. Can't decide whether you want white- or pink-sand beaches? ...

    Dreamland Beach, Bali. ...
    Menjangan Island, Bali
    Gili Islands, Lombok
    Raja Ampat, West Papua
     Busuanga Island, Philippines
    Seagrass Bay, Laucala Island, Fiji
    Ypao Beach, Tumon Guam
     Honopu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii
Maipio Valley Beach, Big Island, Hawaii
Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. ...
    Harbour Island, Bahamas. ...
Blue Beach (La Chiva), Vieques, Puerto Rico. ...
    Trunk Bay, St. John, USVI.
Devil’s Bay, Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands
    Parrot Cay, Turks and Caicos
    Lindquist Beach, St. Thomas
    Palm Beach, Aruba
    San Blas, Panama
    Oludeniz, Turkey
    Porto Katsiki, Lefkada, Greece

Think I’ve been to the Fiji and Hawaii beach but not sure. Not been to many of the others but imagine many of the big wide wild Australian beaches must be as good. Famous Australian beaches like Byron and Bondi are nice beaches but there are better.

Been to the Bali ones and spent a week on the Gili islands in 1987. Nice. Kind of normal though. The best beach I saw in Lombok was Kuta beach, not the same as the Bali one, stunning white sand with just the odd buffalo. Could be different now. Other black sand beaches on Lombok’s north coast were spectacular  too.

My time is almost up. Oh, wait I'm here in Pattaya with an 18yo nymphomaniac on her first date with a farang. Momentarily, I'll need to go escort her down to receive the kanom jeen she's ordered from grab food. I might have blown my 40K budget this month though. I guess that's why I still work full time at 67 with no assets at all. Hedonism is the only lifestyle that makes sense.

Interesting life you are having. Sometimes hedonism can sound a bit exploitative. Hope you get healthy and well.

If the mkt falls my way i wont need to work.

I just had a funny period where I was unemployed around 33. Liked it. Liked the freedom. But saw the future as say an unemployed 40 year old and didn’t like who I might be so got back to work. If you stop work for a time it can be hard to get back. You can lose a bit of confidence. Or not. Sounds like fun.

perfectly, I was mooching around the old Thermae Cafe more years than that ago. I yearn for the days when the urinal at the only entrance was the place to be and provided the perfect introduction for each new arrival walking in after soi cowboy closed. The occasional but real chance of finding a virgin sleeping in a quiet corner and giving her a place to sleep for the night and 500 in the morning. Or being followed home by a barely legal girl would wouldn't give up. It's still like that, right? Right?

There’s this other poster called Ozimoron who seems to be moralistic and thoughtful. Comments  on the news a bit. I didn’t know there could be two posters with the same username.

    What resort?

Got 8 nights to go. One of the bigger ones on White Sand Beach. I think the op doesn’t realise that when you come from a cold country the water is perfect and the beaches are tropical and nice. If there was an overrated beach it was Patong, which is actually a nice beach, but add ten million chairs when I was there, lots of plastic, caked together sand from fuel from jet skis and speed boats, having to swim in cordoned off areas, worrrying you’ll have a parasail land on your head, and sewers near the beach, and it’s not good. Saw pictures since and seems better.  Koh Chang and other places ain’t that.

    Is that Koh Chang?

Correct. Like you say with the food, fun, something different and some decent beaches it’s a good holiday. Bit of a pain to get here with all the masks and stuff but once here it’s nice. Get to finally see my girlfriend too.
Considered Cairns or similar for warm weather but a bit boring same same as home and beaches not amazing till you get somewhere like Mission beach. Might get killed by a stinger too.

Just saw Joe Biden interviewed by Jimmy Kimmel. The message Biden was looking to get across was good  but the execution of it was not the best and it will be fodder for the right. He is no Clinton or Obama but he never was and he beat Trump. Hopefully the people will see that if he can just get a few more votes in the midterms he can really lead and get stuff done. Sadly it may well go the other way.

I should say I meant he is not a Clinton or an Obama as a communicator. I think he is smart and capable but a combination of age and is own traits make him lose his way and give a confused message sometimes. Sometimes the most capable and thoughtful may not be the best clear confident communicators.

I thought the point of exercise was to put stress on your body. What harm do you think would come to her from wearing a mask?

This link suggests it can be a concern. First on google.
    https://www.bangkokhospital.com/en/content/wearing-mask-while-exercising

In Australia we had stopped the mask thing in most places and I found it tiring to wear in the hot weather here when I had to carry my bags. I don’t think difficulty breathing or getting oxygen is a beneficial form of stress. Especially with full on exercise. At best it’s not a nice feeling.

Wars simply end up replacing one tyrant with another.  Nothing really changes.

No. Look at Japan and Germany post war. Peace to the whole region.
Don’t want to get too serious but I find the more right wing supporters on this site, not saying you, tend to have the attitude that all powers are bad, as an excuse for going with a clearly flawed malevolent authoritarian type, on the basis that they are all bad. They all do lie a bit and are political but there are big differences between a few lies and those that work against democracy.
Some things are worth fighting for.

  12. I saw people in Bangkok in a park walking and running. All of them wearing a mask. Seems bad for you to run with a mask. At hotel everyone has mask and plastic mitten for breakfast buffet which is a bit funny but ok. 50 50 around hotel and on street. Few on beach.  Still see whole Thai families all alone on beach wearing a mask. No one in gym or boxing area where a mask.

Where is the beach in Chiang Mai?

Saying that in the low season with low tourists 4000 baht seems high. Chiang Mai tends not to be that expensive and I am comparing it to a hotel on a beach with 4 pools on an island that one might think might be relatively expensive. The reference to checking on TripAdvisor might seem obvious but for some reason now the range of prices between say Agoda and Hotels.com can be huge.

  14. First you probably paid too much. Look on TripAdvisor or other comparison site and then at the Agoda rate or best other rate. 4000 baht is a lot. I am staying at a hotel 4 to 4 and a half star that is fantastic on beach with big buffet for significantly less than half. Huge room. Outlook to sea. Gym. Boxing. Jacuzzi on balcony. Worth planning ahead.
This hotel has slippers and dressing gown and free snack bar but no tooth brush. I don’t tend to expect a free toothbrush or see it as a thing to want or necessarily expect. If they said you get it then ok but they are normally not as good as a proper tooth brush so no big deal.
The problem with buffet is that at this time you should stay in busier hotels as they can have a decent full buffet. Smaller or quieter hotels may not have full buffet or will just give you a la carte. Service may not be as good. Tourism is way down.
My hotel has nice fresh yoghurt that isnt sweet in a bowl that is covered. Good yoghurt is important not individual serve. I judge buffet on quality. Do they have decent bread, muesli, decent salads and cooked meals.
Bar hotel  prices are always a bit high except happy hour. Hotel may be quiet and this may affect service and range.  I go to local store and buy though that may not be your cup of tea.

  15. Seriously Levin and others on Fox are unwatchable. So sycophantic to Trump, so one sided, so conspiratorial. I like to think Australians have a BS meter such that attempts to bring in a Trump like right wing have been laughed at or ignored. It’s not the policies only it’s the arrogant and childlike approach. Totally accept that Democrats get it wrong at times, and that the idea of less government and lower taxes and free markets etc can have merit, but I wonder what happened to the BS meter of significant no of Americans that they can accept this stuff.

Ask Victorians, locked up for 9 months.

People have been sacked over free speech.

I lived through it. Many on here predicted the end of freedom but freedom stayed and Premier can be voted out shortly if people decide. Australia highly rated free press and democracy. Just look at recent election.
My grandfather was actually too young in world war 1 and too old in World war 2 but faked his birth certificate in both. I think he would have understood what happened as he lived through Spanish flu.
