Elon Musk - time to return to your Office at Tesla
placeholder replied to TorquayFan's topic in Political Soapbox
How willfully naive can you be? Doge has Trump's full backing. In a strongman system like that under Trump no one cares about technicalities. Musk has Trump's full throated and sleazy backing. And Trump knew that he was getting a fellow sociopath when he appointed Trump. Right down to the gratuitous cruielty of claiming that the people being let go had poor performance records when that was blatantly false. And Musk wonders why he's loathed. Another disingenuous comment from you. I was referring to the boycott of Tesla. Not violence directed at Tesla. . But when you make a point of repeatedly making hateful comments, you're going to get some dangerous people really angry. Why do he and Trump continually engage in so much nastiness? -

Hey, I got some exciting news for you. Your dairy diatribe is, in effect, baseless: "President Donald Trump correctly noted Friday, as he has before, that Canada has tariffs above 200% on dairy products imported from the US. But Trump again failed to mention a critical fact. Those high tariffs kick in only after the US has hit a certain Trump-negotiated quantity of tariff-free dairy sales to Canada each year – and as the US dairy industry acknowledges, the US is not hitting its allowed zero-tariff maximum in any category of dairy product. In many categories, notably including milk, the US is not even at half of the zero-tariff maximum." https://edition.cnn.com/2025/03/10/politics/trump-canada-dairy-tariffs-fact-check/index.html But you can be sure that the 25% tariffs on pickup trucks made outside the USA is real. Although I think South Korea negotiated that downwards. -

If it's cherrypicking you want to do, then how about the much larger market for pickup trucks. US has imposed a 25% tariff for them. Canadian Dairy Market size was 15 billion USD. The US pickup truck market 75 billion USD. Although it's currently true that pickup trucks manufactured in North America aren't subject to tariffs. Trump seems set on changing that, too. -
False. "A Yale source said the US state department deleted the evidence which would have been used as part of rescue efforts to get the children home to Ukraine. It would also have been used to prosecute those behind their abductions – including Russian president Vladimir Putin. ”It is unclear whether it was by accident or intent, but it may reveal or it may cause potential criminal liability for the Trump administration, given international prohibitions against the destruction of war crimes evidence,” the Yale insider told The Independent."

Actually, i found more up to date information. It turns out that 2021 was an anomaly for Canada. Generally much lower. Probably due to Covid. In 2020 the weighted mean was 1.49% and in 2022 1.37% https://tradingeconomics.com/canada/tariff-rate-applied-weighted-mean-all-products-percent-wb-data.html#:~:text=Tariff rate%2C applied%2C weighted mean%2C all products (%) in,compiled from officially recognized sources. US values didn't fluctuate much https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/tariff-rate-applied-weighted-mean-all-products-percent-wb-data.html Here's a link for the EU https://tradingeconomics.com/european-union/tariff-rate-applied-weighted-mean-all-products-percent-wb-data.html and this is for Britain: https://tradingeconomics.com/united-kingdom/tariff-rate-applied-weighted-mean-all-products-percent-wb-data.html In no case is it anything like the tariffs Trump has imposed so far. -

First off, where did you get the idea that it's only the US that they're imposing tariffs on? Or do you think that there is some special higher tariff imposed on U.S. goods? But what's most important is that tariffs nowadays are mostly very low. Here's a link that will show you the weighted mean of tariffs in most countries of the world, At least as it stood in 2021. In the EU it's 1.39% In the UK it's .72%. In the USA it's 1.47%. In Canada 2.35% https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_tariff_rate -

You believe that the tariffs are mostly targeted at foreign delicacies? It is to laugh. -
I think this "autopen scandal" is quickly going the way of the "jeffrey epstein document scandal". We haven't heard much about that one lately.

And why do you think the Russians are talking to him? Because they believe he is an honest broker? Remember Trump is a guy who has never said a harsh word about Putin but has repeatedly castigated Zelenskyy. It's the same reason that a certain country trusted him to intervene to arrange a truce. Because they know he has no problem with letting them do whatever they want to and making sure they get the materiel to do it.

And why should people who strongly disagree with Donald Trump keep on enabling the man who contributed almost $300 million to his campaign and promises to spend a lot to stop the opponents of Trump in the midterms? The man who is making slashing the Federal govt and yet who repeatedly demonstrates how ignorant he is of how that government works? -

It's going to be bad for everyone. Depending on how many major nations Trump goes after it could be worse for the USA than them. At least in aggregate. But there is the issue of economic gravity to consider. The closer nations are the more they tend to trade with each other. -

Because governments of these countries are such good and virtuous entities that the reason they impose these tariffs is for the benefit of their people? And not for the elites? You sound like a particularly naive socialist. And what could be more nonsensical than your claim that countries benefit from tariffs. Mexico's economy was a shambles for years until it drastically lowered tariffs. And what about Argentina now? https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/argentina-milei-tackles-tariffs/ It's rare that somebody can get something so massively wrong. Congratulations! There is a legitimate use of tariffs in limited cases to foster an emerging and promising economic sector. As China did with batteries and EVs and solar power. But once that sector is strong enough tariffs should be dismantled. -

I'll be charitable and say that these characterizations apply to a few universities. But this research is spread not just or even mostly at elite private institutions but at state universities as well. Of course, what probably will happen if Trumps keep this up, is that other developed nations will be glad to offer a safe haven to these researchers and reap the gains that once went to the USA. -

You really want to offer Thailand as a bastion of democracy? And the fact is that Thailand's economy has been stagnating for years. It's in what's called a middle income trap. And a big part of that trap is high barriers to imports. That benefits the wealthiest members of the thai economy who then got to invest their subsidized gains where economies are freer. -

Tariffs are now very low in most of the middle income and fully developed economies. You're living in the past. One big exception is India. -

What do you mean by subsidized? Your criterion seems to be that if a country runs a positive trade balance with the US then that is somehow evidence of subsidization. But that isn't how trade works. The issue isn't country to country. It's seller to buyer. So it isn't America that buys German goods. It's Americans. Or Swedes or Brazilians. Whoever. If German companies produce goods that Americans prefer, then it will sell them goods. Just like it sells goods to people from other countries.( As a side note, I should point out that German companies do not typically sell goods that underprice those manufactured in American. Quite the contrary) Anyway, the way Americans can solve this problem is to voluntarily lower their standard of living. By that I mean that they can purchase less and save more. If tariffs are instituted, that will be another way to lower their standard of living. Their dollars will purchase less. As Scott Bessent said, "Access to cheap goods is not the essence of the American Dream." Which is another way of saying a higher standard of living is not the essence of the American dream. I do wonder what sacrifices this gentleman worth over half a billion dollars is making. Edit: The exceptions to this being such activity as military purchases by governments.
