  1. In civil suits, there is a finding of responsibility. In criminal suits, there is finding of guilt, beyond reasonable doubt. Please consider what you are saying when you wish the very important principle of reasonable doubt be put aside. Innocent people would be more likely to be convicted. Is that really where you want the justice system to go, for the presumption of innocence to be cast aside? It has served society well for 2000+ years as the concept dates back to the Israelite's biblical laws and the Roman civil laws. We saw what happened when some segments of society chose to apply it in their biased way. Do you wish a return to the Spanish Inquisition and the edicts of the Church during Medieval times?
  2. Not making excuses, nor commenting on Andrew's responsibility. I approach this as a cost benefit exercise. You have assumed that anyone who is not guilty will fight to the end. That is not the reality. Relatively few personal injury cases go to trial. An estimated 90%+ of US filings never do. Even when they do go to trial, many civil suits are settled before the final adjudication. The larger the case, the greater the likelihood of a settlement. Andrew was hard pressed to fund his defence, and was relying on his family to assist. The family believed it best to settle as the case was tarnishing the brand image.
  3. If he loses, it will be because US voters thought long and hard and put the principles of Democracy and the Rule of Law above personal grievance.
  4. Unfortunately, your lauded community notes are more likely to be the source of intentional misinformation and scams.
  5. Do you know where the money for the Crown comes from? Apparently you do not. Neither you, nor the UK taxpayer are directly paying. The Sovereign Grant, formerly known as the Civil List, is a set percentage of the Crown Estate profits that is given to the royal family each year to cover the costs of their activities on behalf of the UK. This is approximately 25% of the profits. The balance of profits go to the to the public purse and are used to pay for things such as the generous benefits UK citizens receive. The Royals Family may own crown jewels and some fine arts, but the assets are frozen in that they cannot be sold or taken out of the UK without the permission of the government. It may be theirs, but they can not sell it. Your anti monarchists can claim as they wish, but their sums are sus and unsubstantiated. Even if 510 million, it is a small cost considering the income the monarchy generates for the people of the UK. As per the Regional Studies.org, Recent attempts to measure the size of the impact of the royal family on UK tourism have estimated the capital value of UK monarchy as a business to be £67.5 billion+ and the annual contribution to the UK economy to be £1.766 billion. These estimates included indirect economic effects on tourism, trade, media and arts.
  6. It is often more cost effective to enter into a financial settlement than to continue a lengthy legal battle. The only ones who prosper are the legal counsels. The alleged victim is claiming damages. The victim typically wants to be compensated for the real or the fabricated damages. To continue to defend some claims consumes more in legal costs than the claimant is demanding. Also, a drawn out litigation can damage a brand value. He was wise to settle when he could as he could never win even if "innocent" as his name was sullied and he was assumed guilty by the public.
  7. Because the evidence was not sufficient to show guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
  8. For reference sake, the tax rate in Thailand is not 35%. The 35% only applies on income that is in excess of 5 million baht. Thailand like Canada has a progressive tax rate. National income tax rates 1 to 150,000 B -0% 150,001 to 300,000B - 5% 300,001 to 500,000B - 10% 500,001 to 750,000B - 15% 750,001 to 1,000,000 B - 20% 1,000,001 to 2,000,000 B - 25% 2,000,001 to 5,000,000B - 30% 5,000,001+B - 35% Canada uses a progressive tax rate that has higher tax rates apply only on income segments. For example, in Ontario the 52% would have applied only on income in excess of $246,000. A lower tax rate applies to Canadian Capital Gains Taxable Income ($) Marginal Tax Rates (%) Interest and Regular Income Capital Gains - to $15,705 - - $15,706 to $18,062 15 7.5 $18,063 to $23,726 25.1 12.55 $23,727 to $51,446 20.05 10.02 $51,447 to $55,867 24.15 12.08 $55,868 to $90,595 29.65 14.83 $90,596 to $102,894 31.48 15.74 $102,895 to $106,735 33.89 16.95 $106,736 to $111,733 37.91 18.96 $111,734 to $150,000 43.41 21.71 $150,001 to $173,205 44.97 22.49 $173,206 to $220,000 48.29 24.15 $220,001 to $246,752 49.85 24.93 $246,753 and over 53.53 26.77
  9. Charles does not have infinite money. Andrew is 64 years old. Why would you expect his brother to support his lavish lifestyle? Prince William doesn't live like this, nor Princess Anne. It is not as if Andrew has nowhere to live or is going without food. Charles is simply saying that if Andrew wants to live in a palatial residence then he should cover the expenses. Royal Lodge is three storeys, with two-storey wings, totalling about 30 rooms, including seven bedrooms. The security cost is estimated to run in excess of £1,000,000 a year. He doesn't need to live in a large place like that. If he does, then he should for it himself.
  10. With a handgun, while the deer were charging you at close range?
  11. Many valid and reasonable points. However, I disagree that she will be an excellent long term choice. She is needed now to clean up the mess that the old boy's club created. Her immediate task is to stabilize the ship, and to start plugging holes in the structure. The electorate purged the lost tories, and now she must purge the party administration of the dullards and drips who were responsible for the electoral losses. Next she must show that the party can once again be relied upon to stay a pragmatic course. Many conservatives fled to Reform because they felt no one was listening. Get them back. Those who fled to the Lib Dems and Labour will return once their increased taxes are calculated.
  12. You made an ignorant claim. Now when someone points out that VP Harris; - Harris was elected in 2002 as District Attorney of San Francisco. She ran unopposed for a second term in 2007. - In 2010 she was elected as attorney general of California. She was re-elected serving until 2017. - In 2016 she was elected to the US Senate. It is ignorant to claim that a person who was selected in multiple primaries and then duly elected multiple times was a DEI hire. Now that you are exposed as bigot you try to cover yourself by using code words such as right gender and ethnicity for the job.
  13. Ok, so freshly cooked. What of the ingredients that have been sitting out in the hot ambient temperature for hours, exposed to the air pullution and flies. The utensils are rarely properly washed. Thais do become ill and it is a regular occurrence and under reported. For someone claiming to be a scientist, please behave like one. Please start here; Food poisoning outbreak in Thailand: A review on situations, December 2015 Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease 5(Sup 1):S187-S189 DOI:10.1016/S2222-1808(15)60887-8 The Thai Ministry of Health used to publish a weekly Disease Forecast. It would highlight disease outbreaks including food poisonings. It stopped in 2021. Reminds me of when the issue of water pollution at Thailand tourist beaches became a concern. Thailand stopped testing and publishing water quality reports for tourist beaches.
  14. There is no evidence to support the claim of SSRI use. Why make the claim?
  15. What was so wrong in every aspect? Please do educate me, so that I can speak with our Treasury unit and have the guidance pages updated. Our company credit card policies and guidance for private and corporate use impact 10,000+ people and if our accounting firm has given us improper advice , well, golly gee then I really should say something. You can take delight in pointing out everything that was so wrong in almost every aspect.
  16. What happened to the bar? Anyone? Ferris?
  17. What has changed? It's the way it has always been. Some unattractive guys or girls are genuinely nice people and alot of fun. In university, one of our hang crew was always spending too much. There were times when we would go out, and he played the room, letting whomever was around to buy him drinks. He had it down to an art, targeting the lonely mediocre looking girls. The opportunity to hang out with a good looking guy even for a bit was worth it for them. He was so good that he good identify multiple marks , swoop in and sometimes dangle 2-3 on a busy night. When he was not scoring with the ladies, he was open to accepting drinks from men. The way some nights ended though could be cruel. There would sometimes someone hovering near the exit waiting to see if they could hook up. Wasn't going to happen. No matter how much of a rogue he was, he was faithful to his girlfriend.
  18. Your arrogance is revealing. Ok, so only you know how credit cards are structured. What exactly was factually incorrect with my statement? You are quick to dismiss the man for his use of a credit card, calling him ignorant, but you did not offer a viable solution. Instead, you offered a smug statement relying on an outdated credit card format that most financial institutions have moved away from in favour of fee for service cards. You completely ignored the need for an understanding of a cumulative costing approach. You also ignored the reality of reward and cash back cards. What may be lost in FX administrative fees might be partly recouped in airline FF miles or in full by the 2-3% annual refund on total transactions that some cards provide. Many people have them now. I do, in addition to my FX credit cards.
  19. The generalizations are under attack. In respect to this comment that was made, I was under the impression that Jomtien was the go to destination for Pattaya region LGBQTS2+ people, like the happening place for older gay men. Why then would there be women in need of care? Has something changed in Jomtien? I have been to Pattaya, but not to Jomtien, so I may very well have the wrong impression. Wow. I find that Hua Hin is as expensive as Bangkok and more so on higher end things. For example, the quality hotel brands like Marriott and Dusit have higher rates than comparable hotels in Bangkok. It is understandable though since they are on the beach. It is all about economy of scale and Bangkok offers that. Bangkok also offers a greater selection of products, the big BUT is you have to know where to go and how to negotiate to get the lowest prices in Bangkok. Cocktails at most decent restaurants in Hua Hin are 120-150 baht. Night life is certainly better in Bangkok. One can go from a string quartet soiree to a ripping good dance club very easily. Not going to happen in Hua Hin or Pattaya. Pattaya tourism targets lower end foreigners and regional convention/seminar clientele. It's pricing reflects that. The silent killer now for Pattaya is the traffic congestion. It is not improving. The congestion has added a cost to staying in Bangkok and it has destroyed Patong. Hua Hin is no better in high season.
  20. What about the population? I see a lot of unemployment/underemployment of young males and that typically results in civil unrest and conflict. BRICS is more like a support group for economies and societies with problems. Brazil - A growing gap between haves and have nots. Violent crime is a way of life and the country is at risk of experiencing a Mexico like drug cartel renaissance. Russia- Its economy is in bad shape because of its war in Ukraine. It is a war economy now with no investment in social infrastructure. India - It has big dreams, yet women are still raped without consequences , raw sewage still flows freely, and it is close to being sanctioned for its direct links to political terrorism in Canada and the USA and to transacting with organized crime. China - it is sitting on a real estate bubble that could burst. It has a lot of unhappy young men who want a better quality of life. South Africa - A screwed up economy run by failed marxists. Iran - A sponsor of international terrorism and at odds with the UAE UAE - At odds with Iran Egypt - A basket case country that teeters on financial collapse on any given day of the week. Threatening to bomb Ethiopia. Ethiopia - Is alleged to be carrying on a clandestine war and genocide. It is in a dispute with Egypt. Does this really look like a powerhouse group?
  21. And no evidence to support your claim. If all those unauthorized voters cast votes, why hasn't any one of them been identified. Electoral fraud in the USA is typically something like this; Brian Pritchard, a First Vice Chair of the Republican state party, was sanctioned by the Georgia State Board of Elections for voting at least 9 times while ineligible from 2008 to 2010. Pritchard was convicted of felony check forgery in Pennsylvania in 1996 and was placed on probation for three years, which was extended for various reasons until 2011. In 2008, Pritchard registered to vote in Georgia, despite still being on probation for the felony charges. He voted a total of nine times in primary, general and runoff elections between 2008 and 2010. An administrative law judge found Pritchard had violated Georgia law by voting as a convicted felon who had not finished serving his sentence. The State Election Board approved the judge’s findings and imposed $5,000 in civil penalties (a $500 penalty and $500 for each voting offense), $375.14 in investigative costs, and a public reprimand. He was subsequently removed from his position in the Republican party.
  22. I don't think we will know who the President will be on USA Tuesday night. It may take several days to confirm absentee and advance ballot counts in states like GA and PA. States in the pacific time zones will still be tallying into Wednesday. In the interim, there will be protests and multiple claims of conspiracies. Hopefully, we can get a holiday from such things.
  23. This event occurred in PATONG. Having spent more time in the city than I should have over a decade, I can assure cynics that every negative comment made about the city is understandable. The moto taxi and tuk tuk thugs are a powerful lobby and they operate in a manner that suggests organized crime. Phuket is in the triangle of corruption that is bounded by Nahkon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani and Phuket. Corruption is a way of life here and is heavy duty, the kind where people are seriously beaten or disappear. One need only look at the Patong beach to understand that gangsters run the place. There are some nice places. Despite the problems of the Karon-Patong-Kamala strip please note that Phuket is a large island. It does offer some very beautiful beaches like Surin or Karon. There are some wealthy enclaves, far removed from the filth of Patong. The farangs who live in in Bang Tao, or Kata or other nice areas rarely if ever have to deal with the scum, so they island remains nice for them. Most foreign residents do try to avoid Patong. Yes, Phuket does have that, but they are outside of Patong 😉 You are right. The connection options are poor. It is really unbelievable that Thailand still can't get its train services and schedule to these cities up to the standards of at least 1994. The SRT is still offering 1960's era service and it shows. Connecting the south train lines (and Pattaya) to Bangkok airport by an express train should have been a priority a decade ago.
