  1. ^ I think you misread my post. i.e., ".. self propelled lawn mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine for under 12,000 baht including the grass catcher. "

  2. .. I am entertaining the purchase of a self propelled lawn mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine for under 12,000 baht including the grass catcher.

Kamalabob2: Can you provide more details on this machine? i.e. multispeed(?), brand, hp ..

    Thanks smile.png

  3. "On Friday, Microsoft recommended uninstalling a recent security update following reports that it caused Blue Screens of Death.

ComputerWorld reports that the patch—MS 14-045—was first announced on August 12 before it received further attention on Friday. The patch intended to fix three issues including one in the Windows kernel. But soon after it was initially released, a Microsoft support forum thread sprung up with tales of "Stop 0x50 errors," aka blue screens. (ComputerWorld notes the thread has surpassed 50,000 views within the week.)" Source

"Seems like business as usual in the Microsoft Black Tuesday support arena. Windows customers -- not Microsoft -- have found a solution to the Blue Screen of Death/Stop 0x50 error I talked about yesterday. Microsoft, as usual, has been totally AWOL." Source

  4. Getting a fence built around our 3 ngan of land has proved to be the most frustrating part of our build.  I won't go into all the frustrations, but after a long search for someone to do the post heads, found a really good guy.

He does all sorts of concrete moldings using an interesting technique.  First he makes a mold of sand, shapes it with a template, then starts what must surely be a tedious process of drizzling a gel-like slurry of concrete over the form -- then uses the/another? template to shape the slurry.

It takes about 10 layers to finish a frame.

You can see from the photos how he mounts them on the posts &  finishes them.  The guy works non-stop, no drama, and for a very fair price, IMO.  His price for finishing a post is about the same or less than the best price we could find for the castings (not mounted).

If you are looking for something like this, it is worth talking to him.

The house is in Khon Kaen, he lives in Ubon, but is thinking about going to BKK.

If you want to contact him, send me a PM and I'll supply his number -- needs to be a Thai speaker.

  5. Klikster: Today I asked Pichai the owner of the Buriram Builders Merchants Store that sells and repairs electric and petrol lawn mowers from Bosch, Makita, Honda, Talon, Briggs & Stratton if the Bosch Rotak 34 electric grass mower is suitable for that size of a lawn in Buriram Province. He said with a proper electric extension cord that would prevent voltage line drop, absolutely the Bosch Rotak 34 electric would be appropriate for about 1.5 ngan of grass area. He seems to have a few lawn mowers, not just the Troy Bilt Briggs & Stratton 17.5hp riding lawn mower which he charges 20,000 baht less than the "sale price" of HomePro for the exact same model.

    Thanks, Bob.

I'm looking for a well-designed & reliable self-propelled with grass-catcher. Wife will be doing most of the mowing.

At our last house we had a big yard of Malay? grass. I bought a self propelled Chinese off-brand. Big problems! It only had 1 speed -- too fast for the power -- and for comfortable mowing. The engine also liked to go into fits of surging when it got too hot. Then the "Kawa" engine would die and need to cool down before starting again. Also the cutting blade was so soft it wouldn't hold an edge.

I think the Craftsman sit-on is overkill for our land -- also appears to not have a grass-catcher attachment? But if push comes to shove -- ?

For those of you suggesting hiring a Thai for a couple of hundred Baht -- I doubt you live in Umphur Muang KK. Finding casual day labor here is VERY difficult.

While thinking about the Husky self-propelled, I have read negative comments about its durability. Also, one dealer in BKK no longer shows the multi-speed model on their website.

If someone has a Husky self-propelled and can vouch for the durability, please do -- maybe I can run one down -- or not?

If someone knows where I can get a new Honda multi-speed with Craftsman engine and grass-catcher, please let me know.

  6. Seriously, I feel for you, Fookhaht.

My quarterly journeys from Pak Thongchai to Chokchai -- then later on -- Dan Kwian (Korat) were not so bad, except sometimes DK was packed and have had to wait as long as 2 hours.

When I lived in Ban Krut (Bangsaphan), I had to drive about 300 km to Dan Singkorn Immigration. Did that for 5 years.

  7. Can someone recommend a family-owned shop in Khon Kaen where I can get a reliable self-propelled, bagger equipped, mower like the Honda or Sakari.

@Kamalabob2, is the Bosh Electric appropriate for about 1.5 ngan of grass area?

  8. Dealt with the middle-aged female officer at the end of the row today.

She's your worst immigration officer nightmare. Rude and pushy. She threatened a "$5000-baht penalty visa overstay" (her words) for not having the "Receipt of Notification" from my last 90-day report (sent by post).

In fact they never sent it to me. I had the EMS receipt and the EMS tracker report showing they signed for it. She refused to even look at it.

For over 10 years, immigration offices have accepted the EMS proof when the Receipt of Notification hasn't come through (I've had to use it 3-4 times).

Not now. It either reflects a change of climate toward foreigners or that said officer got up on the wrong side of the bed this a.m. Having dealt with this particular misanthrope for over 10 years, you know what I suspect.

    Scary stuff.

Really? Have you followed her from her last posting? The staff of the KK office has change completely, at least one time, in the past 10 years. Actually, maybe 2 times.

Did you have to pay $5000??!!

Did you have to pay Bt 5000? If not, how much did you have to pay?

Don't mouth off, shove or assault a cop and nothing will happen to you. Easy for most to understand.

Common sense pretty much confirms what happened here.

I could have sworn that I once heard of a court (Supreme Court?) decision that said something to the effect of a person's right to ".. loudly proclaim their innocence ..". If the US no longer supports that right I'm very disappointed in my homeland.

    7. Try to resist the temptation to mouth off at the police, even if you have been wrongly arrested. Police have a lot of discretion in what charges are brought. They can change a misdemeanor to a felony, add charges, or even take the trouble to talk directly to the prosecutor and urge him to go hard on you. On the other hand, I have seen a client who was friendly to the police and talked sports and such on the way to the station. They gave him a break. Notice he did not talk about his case.

  11. " .. so I spoke a Thai slur .. "

OP, please post a transliteration of that slur so I can try it on my BIL -- while standing behind my wife, of course!

I want to see his reaction, i.e., "huh?", giggle, belly laugh, overt hostility, drawn pistol, etc. laugh.png

  12. I have heard of no changes to the visa extension based on marriage so your post is just the usual Thai bash.

i dont know how long youve been here but over the last few years there has been many changes to marriage, dependant , and retirement visa extensions its the salami effect gradually slicing it bit by bit slowly to make it more difficult each time

Please point out to me the "many changes to marriage" visas.

I am on my 9th straight, nothing has changed.

400k in the bank, copy of wifes ID card and Tabian baan, copy of my arrival card and passport, letter from bank with and up to date copy of bank book, photos and sometimes I have to draw a map.

The above hasnt changed in the last 9 years.

So please explain your remarks, they serve no purpose and in fact may well spread alarm to others who know no better.

    Agree with rgs2001uk.

From my perspective the "retirement visa" is easier now than when I first moved here in '96. Age requirement was 60, I was 56.

Then the age requirement dropped to 55, but I was advised to get a letter from a Thai official to accompany the application for my Non-"O" Visa.

Now it's 50 and pretty automatic.

  13. Maybe this crackdown is real. Let's hope so. I think we can all agree that allowing tourist visa holders to live in Thailand is wrong. People doing border runs are simply skirting legal, though more expensive, means of staying in Thailand long term.

This may be the beginning of a golden age where Thais begin to enforce existing law.

    We can only hope so.

Tough luck to those rascally poverty packers who haven't a dime to their name.

First off, who are you to be saying, "I think we can all agree that allowing tourist visa holders to live in Thailand is wrong."?

People doing border runs are doing what works for THEM.

    "Golden Age" LOL!

Get off your soap box and stop generalizing about character and finances.

  14. "That actually happend accidently."

"Nobody, it appears realised this was going to happen before the work started."

"I read on here somewhere that if there are no windows or doors on that side .."

    I was told 1 m if no windows, 1.5 m if windows.

FWIW, I'm glad I'm not the neighbor.

  15. I think KK Uni also has a language school. Lots of pretty girls, plenty of reasonably priced housing ..

And I guess I don't understand the "avoid other foreigners" in a few posts. There are some pretty nice folks of all races and persuasions living in Isaan.

  16. - Thanks, and no offense, Chicog -- but your pronouncements don't seem to fit with my research. I have read too many comments about Samsung problems.

    Really?

I have Five Samsung 55" 6 Series in the office that run 12 x 7 without any problem, and a 55" 8 Series at home that is equally flawless.

So I can't really vouch for what you might have read on t'interwebnet.

    Really!

Even a few in this sub-forum.

You tend to use comments like "best" and "flawless" in many of your posts. So I discount them to "IMO".

As for your 6 Samsung TV's -- you don't seem to have a basis for comparison.
