  1. Whilst it's not with Readyboost i'm sure it fits the spec but I'm using one of those Sandisk Microdrive 2gb. The ones with the retractable connector. That's what I use as an emergency boot drive for my Macbook Pro. So I boot from that over USB and run Disk Utility etc whenever needed.

Readyboost just requires certain access speeds. I forget which ones exactly but just look at the specs.

I'm sure there a cheaper Apacer that will work but I'd stick with Sandisk.

    Guys,

going to pantip tomorrow .. just wondering which brand of usb stick - 2 gig - to buy for vista readyboost.. dont wanna risk buying and then finds out it doesnt work with readyboost.

    thanks

  2. Here's what a successfull session looks like... I'm using ross barkman's scripts for connecting.

I've opined recently that under OSX it -should- be possible to mulitplex both GPRS and USB modem at the same time but of course it's not.

At first it was failing but after repairing it began to work.

What are you putting in for "telephone number" in network preferences?

Yes it's working for me on my Macbook pro. i'm using a nokia n95. Which phone are you using?
I'm using Mac OSX 10.4.9 and trying to get a GPRS to my Macbook Pro. The mobile phone settings are fine, but I can't seem to work out the Bluetooth modem settings on my MBP. I've searched around and can't find them online anywhere and the AIS rep seemed clueless. Having messed around with various settings in Bluetooth modem prefs, I have only gotten as far as this:

    Mon May 14 07:55:15 2007 : Making GPRS connection

    Mon May 14 07:55:24 2007 : Serial connection established.

    Mon May 14 07:55:25 2007 : Modem hangup

Is there anyone else who has succeeded? If so, I'd be very grateful if you could post your settings here or send me an IM.

  4. Another annoyance is how they have to unplug everything that has a standby mode. They claim it uses 5W of electricity even when the TV, Stereo are in standby so they choose to unplug all devices that would be consuming power instead of putting them into standby. So nothing switching on only by remote here it's plug in, switch on at the base, and then push the remote button to turn on.

  5. well it's dinner time again so let's see if I can count how many times they say "gin"

you can feel they are all worked up for it already

    1. Married to a Thai. Cannot recall her or her parents, ever saying aroi or otherwise commenting on food. Must be freaks.

    2. 12 years now, and not asked to pay a thin dime for the in-laws or anyone else, and don't. Wife spends only on the barest necessities and feels spending over 100 Baht on anything is wildly excessive. OK, she is a freak.

  6. Yeah he's got the Thai copying Japan popstar haircut. Probably goes thru gallons of hair gel every week. He's either connected or linked to somebody connected. He's got this Oxford like accent on him too.

It's like a farang walking around with one of those now fashionable circular Amulets around his neck.

Is this the blonde English guy who is the only man I have ever seen in my life trying to copy a typical Thai guy's hairstyle? (i.e side parting, long pointed hair in front of the ears, neck-length hair at the back, sticking up on top).

We love Thailand. He loves it too much.

  7. Well it just gets so irritating and repetitive to hear this over and over every time something is consumed. Note: I've been married for over five years but this still continues to annoy me to this day.

The Thais are much like the Italians and the French in this respect when it comes to discussing food to the nth degree.

And so does every cultured society.

Discussing delicacies is good manners anywhere in the world.

  8. For the record my wife isn't Issaan cannot speak a word of english Thai. Wife has a degree and has worked overseas already and has above average English skills.

i f your wife is thai, so whats new. it their way of them knowing you lub her. i mean whats the porpoise of marrying a farang if you dont get money from him
  9. Why is it whenever the mother is around or for that matter when she's not whenever food is consumed there's a mandatory 30 minute discussion about how arroy it was and if it wasn't where it's done better and why?

I get so tired of the constant discussions about food whenever it's consumed. to me it's just food and I don't have to analyze it to death.

    Secondly,

If you are married and support your wife overseas and she earns money there but expects me to pay most of the time. How would you feel if every time her mother opens her wallet to pay for something she offers to pay herself or ask me to contribute. Note: when we are in Thailand I'm expected to pick up most significant expenses. ie. my wife is happy to pay for her mother to tour somewhere but I'm expected to pick up the expense for any touring my wife and I do. I don't think this is a "fair" balance of expenditure.

  10. Speaking of BMW's I saw a nice 7 series with nice wheels in Muang Thong Thani a couple of weeks back and today we had a visitor in a 3 digit 5 series with new plate on it. That car is a little out of place in this Moo Baan. Anybody know what a 3 digit 5 series goes for in Thailand?

So this guy claims he put an expensive ring in a bag instead of wearing it !!!! The Germans still claim that the Mercedes Benz is the best car in the world, so that say everything about the ring story.

So what is the best car in the world then?

Well it aint a dodge, and for me it is BMW

  11. So after spending most of lunch arguing why it's not a good idea to prescribe less anti biotic dosage than is necessary and how it's important for the doctor to see you before you take anti biotics what does the mother do?

She tells her daughter to bring the medicine the hospital prescribed for me that is after examining me - ie seeing me in person, to the pharmacy so she can buy the same stuff for herself because the daughter (my wife) has a sore throat.

So I have a respritory infection and my wife has a sore throat so now she should take anti biotics without first seeing a doctor.

Then when we come home I'm asked to open the gate which I do but the mother who made the request gets out herself and opens the gate herself after I've already gotten out to do it (Should I pissed when this happens?)

We buy two fans at Lotus and they keep changing checkout lanes because each time they think they've found a shorter line it isn't and by the same they come back the line there were originally in was grown. It's the same reason why when we park a car easy spaces are overlooked and we spend a much longer time look for the perfect space usually having gone around in circles at least once already.

Soemtimes you just have to wonder.

I just wish that my daughter would sometime question her mothers decision because most of the time they are just flat wrong.

Advice: If you marry a Thai make sure you can stand the mother because if you can't it doesn't matter how easy going the daughter is you're going to be spending a lot of time with her mother and you will always be last in their priorities.

Today the doctor I saw wanted to give me a narcotic derivative of morphine but I declined. I generally don't think I need narcotics in my condition.
the perscription stuff, I stick to what the doctor gives me in the dosage they recommend and I won't try and get it elsewhere. But, if he/she tries to give me other stuff like that I can get over the counter at a pharmacy I'll tell them "I've got plenty of that at home, I don't need anymore".

  13. Yeah i'm not sure how willing the doctor will be to fill out a prescription if they know you aren't going to buy the medicine at the hospital's pharmacy. Since their service charges are so low you figure they are making their money thru the medicine.

Yes they will hike up the price in Hospitals for Farangs if you let them get away with it.

So I ask the Doctor for a prescription and go to Fascino Pharmacy here in Pattaya where the medicine is much cheaper.

  14. I'm still wondering how the plan to sue Google. Not quite sure of the international law that was broken there.

You'll note the amazing -and usual- megalomania of those people.

Penalties apply to all illegal acts using the internet, including those carried out abroad and deemed to damage the country both ''directly and indirectly''.

    http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/10May2007_news06.php

The thai authorities think that their law can overcome laws in other countries...

Shame and brainless. Again and again and again.

  15. So today I come back from the hospital and as usual there's a total for 4 medicines rather than each itemized.

Anyway, despite one of them being an antibiotic my wife's mother (who thinks she knows everything) told me that you should ask for 2 days instead of the 5 days prescribed and that way you can buy the rest you need elsewhere cheaper.

I for one find it very unlikely the any doctor is going to prescribe you a lower dose of medicine than you need to correct the problem. Especially an anti-biotic. This is why for example most bacteria in Thailand is already resistant to Amoxycillin because anybody can walk into a pharmarcy and buy capsules of the street.

So, is it typical for people to ask for lower doses so they can source it elsewhere?

I reckon even if I asked for a lower dose I'm still going to be paying the same amount otherwise they would have clearly showed me what I'm paying for each in the first place instead of hiding it all in one total for medicine.

Note: doctors service charge was 200 thb which I consider to be pretty reasonable.

  16. Doesn't anybody see the complete disconnect b/w the the original motive and the new reasoning?

Thailand gets new cyber crime law

The chief immediate effect of the new bill will be to outlaw any attempt to get around government censors to access any of the tens of thousands of sites censored for moral or political purposes, or "to damage the country".

The government pushed the new law by saying it hopes the bill will provide an effective legal tool to fight cyber crime, including theft of data and chatroom contacts that lead to rape.

  18. I've been paying 350 thb per month for 100 hours on AIS prepaid and it's been working out quite well I have to say.

Pretty useless if you also have to have a GPRS connection for this.

GPRS works out way more expensive. 30baht a month fixed fee as opposed to a per byte/minute cost....my missus regularly passes 1500 baht per month, and that's just mailing me, or me mailing her phone....

  19. If you could receive for free or pay for a package and email the device via #@dtac.co.th etc... then it would be useful since then you can forward what you want to your phone. but it looks like this is ill conceived if it only supports the public mail services like gmail etc.

    DTAC introduces mobile email service

BANGKOK: -- Total Access Communication (DTAC) has introduced a "PushMail" service for individual subscribers who want to keep in touch with mail messages while on the go.

Once a new email is sent into a customer's account, the service will send the topic of the email and the sender's to his mobile phone. If he wants to read it, he can click on the attached link to access his email account via DTAC's high-speed cellular network.

The service currently supports Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail. A mobile phone user can use the service for one email account.

  20. In the US where in some cases it doesn't cost to receive SMS I've been doing this for donkey's years. I've had scripts that process the mail as it's delivered to my server and "email" my telephone both the subject etc plus chunk up the actual message across several messages.

Pretty useless if you also have to have a GPRS connection for this.

I could do the same thing here in Thailand but with prepaid I think it still costs to receive SMS so it's not a cost effective solution here but the push nature of it is very nice.
