Yes, I would expect a response. Recommend not to surrender your old passport when lodging your application in person at the Embassy.
Until you physically pick up the newbie from the Embassy, the old one remains valid.
It will then be clipped and have a stamp inserted stating " This passport replaced by passport XU67890" and you sign under the stamp.
Your newbie is then activated.
(Note, if you choose to have the newbie posted to you, you must submit the old passport with the application. Therefore you do not have a passport at all for maybe 6 weeks -not my preference.)????????
