  1. I hope so. I sometimes hear from tourists that they have been disappointed from Thailand, but most come home and talk about paradise (but haven't been to the north). Never heard a tourist complain about the smog. Good to know there are others, more sensitive ones.
  2. Yes, yes, yes, that's all true. I myself am going to move because of the pollution. But only your last sentence related to what I am talking about: tourists. In my experience, tourists don't care. And I know a lot of tourists and potential tourists, from European and Asian markets. Your last sentence is very remarkable, indeed, and gives me hope that I may be wrong. I didn't know this. If Thailand loses money from pollution, and loses it now, not sometime in the future, that might be a motivation for change.
  3. That's NOT a reputable brand. That's exactly what I was saying: the brands you can get here are the stuff sold to the like of Americans or Brits. Crap.
  4. Canola oil. Easy to find. Olive oil would also be good, but you won't get unadulterated olive oil in Thailand.
  5. My point was exactly what your post shows: people who travel to Thailand do not typically get their information from media targeting a worldwide audience. The one British paper quoted most often in AN is the Daily Mail. I may be wrong, and maybe pollution does have an impact on tourism. From personal experience, I have yet to meet a single person from their tourist markets who cares.
  6. It was in printed papers. People who come to Thailand as tourists get their news from TV. And by the time they buy their tickets for January, they have forgotten these ancient news anyway I know many people from several of Thailand's main tourist markets. I have never met anybody who had even heard of pollution in Thailand. But everybody "knows" that Thailand has beautiful beaches, nice weather, and is dirt cheap. Just last week I was told what a beautiful place CM is, and how everybody wants to go there (in January or February).
  7. Is there a correlation of visibility and level of PM 2.5? Before I check PM 2.5 (looking at a meter or looking at aqicn.com) I usually just look out of the window, which has a very far view. I feel that the view out of the window usually gives me a good idea of today's air quality. But during the last smog season, a couple of times the view appeared to be clear but aqicn had high PM2.5.
  8. I found your old post with the link https://orbitax.com/taxhub/countrychapters/TH/Thailand/e5f4c7d16b644b02bdb68eb4bbc3ab94/Statute-of-Limitations-1483 I now think I completely misunderstood how this works. For any given year, the statute of limitations limits the time they can audit this year to 5 years. If no tAX was filed for this given year they can audit this year even 10 years later. Is this the correct way ro look at it?
  9. @Mike Lister So, the advantage of filing even if not required is, an audit will only go back 3 years, not 10 (and no 2000 fine). How many times does one have to have filed to get this advantage? Just having filed last year is good enough? 3 years? 10 years?
  10. All PT I have seen in Bangkok was only passive. This is not helpful in the long run. You should switch from PT to a personal trainer (for a limited time) after a while. Recommended PT: BPC as above (the most passive), expensive St Louis Hospital (old school, see YouTube Brad and Bob - which is good), 1000 B Bumrungrad (same, 2000 B+) Sukumvit Hospital (different, machines like ultrasound, shock waves, laser, so good at the beginning)
  11. He speaks just the way Americans (?) speak, not especially rude for an American. She speaks extremely rude for a Thai, even discussing whether he is Thai (meaning human) in English for him to hear. The train was quite empty, it's really rude to block the entrances. The most interesting thing is that Thais find this newsworthy. Tells you how petty they are, and how much they like foreigners.
  12. If the visa will be introduced as announced you will be able to stay 6 years (last entry on the last day of the visa, 6x180 days, each extended once to 360 days). 5 visa runs. Tax free, free multiple reentries, visa fee 10,000/6 = 1666 B/ year. Gf is planning to offer cooking classes "How to cook Somtam". Classes will last 6 years (cooking Somtam is not easy). Classes will be offered in Soi 6. My local 7/11 is planning a seminar "How to make best use of this week's promotion" There are new promotions every week, so the seminar will never end.
  13. I knew my sentence would be used by the anti- science brigade. But I still find it puzzling. The reason are probably the new variants. (Edit: TallGuy beat me to this)
  14. Taiwan has 2 halves of roughly equal size: the 4000m-high mountains in the east, almost uninhabited. The West coast, everybody lives here. Population density here is twice as high as in the Netherlands (highest in Europe), half of Bangladesh (highest in the world). Taiwan is an aged society, much older than Thailand. Old people still live with the family (that's how they got infected in Italy and Spain 2020). In Thailand, the young are in Bangkok, the old in the village. BTW Covid is also rising in the US and in Germany - like in Taiwan, it's summer in all of these places and we were told covid waves would become a typical respiratory disease of the winter...
  15. From the posted article in the NYT: Mr. Petzold suggested that some of the anger was misplaced, citing a high number of expatriates and digital nomads, who bring higher salaries to the competitive rental market. “These people have more impact on the city and everything than the actual tourists,”
  16. Good post. Not only rental prices would soar, other prices, too. Many places in Thailand would become unlivable, like Barcelona. But of course, this is exactly the intention.
  17. Most digital nomads could live 5 years from savings?
  18. Correct. This is the current (2024) law: income from abroad, not remitted to Thailand, is tax free. What will the digital nomads live on? Many will try to bring their income into Thailand using illegal tricks, so expect stricter controls. If the law changes as suggested by the Thai Revenue Department, and worldwide taxation is introduced, they have to pay Thai income tax on all of their income.
  19. It depends on which country. My embassy does need a valid reason why I want to renew my passport here. There can be many reasons: living here, unability to get home in due time... A tourist on visa exemption would not get his passport renewed in Thailand if he can just as well do it at home.
  20. We soon arrive at the point where a 90-days run out of the country is easier than a 90 days report. It's definitely more fun.
