  1. Capital One ...

I am back in the States for family business for a few weeks. I had previously posted about Cap One sending out a new ATM card and that the old one becomes inactive. I have scanned and attached the insert that came with the new Cap One ATM.

    1)

Withdrawal limit has increased to $600 per day

    2)

    ATM number has changed

    3)

    NO activation required

    4)

Old ATM card is dead after one week of receiving new card

    Good Luck All!

  2. I got my information from two sources:

    1)

    My internal message to them:

    Date: 2/28/2011 5:00:00 a.m.

    Account: High Yield MM XXXXXX

    Subject: ATM/Debit Card

Message: I received an email saying I will receive a new ATM card between 01/March and 14/May. I am overseas on 04/April for 2 months. If the new ATM card does not arrive by then will the existing one still work? Thank You

    ======================

    Received Message Response

    Date: 3/1/2011 2:08:53 p.m.

    From: Customer Care

    Subject: RE:ATM/Debit Card

Message: Dear Valued Direct Banking Customer,

Thank you for your message. We are currently in the process of issuing new ATM cards to all of our customers who have an active ATM card. There will be no action required on your part in order to activate this new card. Please note, the new ATM card will have a different card number than your previous card. However, your ATM PIN will remain the same.

Please also keep in mind, your previous ATM card will automatically be deactivated within 5 business days of receiving your new ATM card. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

If you have additional questions, please respond to this secure message and we will be happy to assist you further.

Thank you for choosing Capital One Direct Banking.

    2)

Upon getting the above I called CAP ONE and spoke to the CSR who answered the phone and her supervisor. I 'grilled' each on the statement from above as to how CAP ONE would know to deactivate the old one within five days since there is no need to call a 800 # to activate the new one. Both said that once the new ATM card is mailed out their system will note the mailed out date. And if you use your old ATM six or more days out it will not work due to it being inactivated. As said I went through all this due to the fact I come back over on 04/April. And the receipt of the new one is within 01/March<>14/May.

So I am spreading the word based on what I have been verbally told and the noted message from them when I used the secure messaging system within the online account.

If all this is true just another reason I am going to dump CAP ONE. Another behind the scene move on them. I mentioned the switch from Plus to Cirrus and before I could make my point the CSR said they, CAP ONE, had been bombarded (my words) by overseas users of their ATM card not being happy folks.

Here is the email from Cap One, don't know where jgm005 got his info since the email doesn't say anything about your current card. I will be hoping that it will have the Visa logo, so it will might again work at AEON

  3. This is probably the wrong thread to alert those holding a Capital One ATM card from their direct banking side. But know that because of their switch from PLUS to CIRRUS they are issuing new ATM cards. To be sent out between 01 March and 14 May. AND once the new ATM card is issued your existing ATM card will fall down dead within five days. Their system will know when you use your old ATM card and that your new ATM card was mailed out. And if this is five days out your old ATM card will be deactivated.

Since I am going back 04/April I have put in a few calls to narrow down exactly what will happen and the above is what I have been told via voice and message.

  4. Thanks for the feedback on my queries.

I'd like to chime in on Home Pro. This is the one in Khon Kaen. The 1st time we where there and I charged a whole bunch of stuff for a remodeling job, it was not until I got home and noticed they did that DCC thing on me. Now, before I even hand the card to the cashier I spell it out, slowly, "IN THAI BAHT".

Back to Capital One. In my personal experiences I have had the ATM blocked when I did not inform them before hand. It only took one time and now as a habit I call them to inform them.

Also on Capital One POS the alert really comes quick and the amount in the email consistently changes slightly once it posts from the amount on the email. On the Capital One ATM initial post (pending as they call it) it has never changed once it clears.

  5. I need to be enlighten.

At 15:21 at the AEON ATM in Paragon I used a VISA Debit Card to pull 15,000bt

Exchange rate computed to be 30.5107. Account was debited $491.63

At 16:25 at the Citibank ATM at Asoke I used a Capital One Non branded ATM card (YES, it actually worked)to pull 15,000bt

Exchange rate computed to be 30.3207. Account was debited $494.71

IER was 30.618 when I checked at 17:05

The one thing I can not figure out is the following and maybe I am overlooking something. I always do an inquiry first and the Capital One account showed 37,747.08. After I did the ATM pull for 15,000bt the account now shows 22,716.97bt. A difference of 30.11bt.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

  6. Pib,

JFC said it all. I have been with them for about four years now. To recap from my dealings:

    1)

CSR's are just that cookie cutter boobs. Though, now and then, I will get one that knows more than I do. And the last one was of that quality.

    2)

If you do not tell them before hand you are going overseas you will find your ATM blocked. Learned that the hard way. Getting it unblocked was easy enough.

    3)

Every trip (3 months at a crack) I will call ahead to tell then exact dates and countries I will be in so as my card will not be blocked. The trip I am on they only would accept 60 days so I Googled reminded myself to notify them, again, on the 59th day to cover my whole 90 days. Always before they would note it for the full time.

    4)

The credit card is great but calling their CSR's you will get a Filipino and their scripts on a computer screen. Calling the banking side I always seem to get someone stateside.

    5)

The long hold on a ACH transfer into the savings account is a bummer. I have to plan out ahead in moving money to cover the 9 days. Example: Day 1 I request the money to be moved; Day 2 it settles into the account but not accessible (unless you do this on a holiday or weekend than add more time). Once I see the money posted into the account I mentally add 7 days to the post date to know when I can pull it out. I maybe off by a day on this but this how I work it.

    6)

Love the alerts you can set up on the credit card side

    7)

I'd recommend them even with all my 'complaining' on the ATM 'invalid transction' stuff I have been getting since mid-December.

At this time I only have two ATMs! Capital One non-branded ATM. And a local USA credit union Visa branded Debit card but they charge 1%. My wife gets tired of me moaning on fees. So thus I am looking for a 3rd source!

Other than the current Cap One ATM card problem, do you have any other issues with Cap One Banking....excluding the current ATM card issue, would you recommend Cap One Banking? The reason I ask is because I'm seriously thinking about attempting to open savings and checking accounts with Cap One since they offer very good savings account interest rates and one of their checking accounts provides a debt card with no foreign transaction fee and possibly a descent ATM fee reimbursement policy. I've also been very impressed with their Cap One Cash Rewards credit card (which I'm currently using), their clear and open disclosures/fee structure, and banking/credit card websites. Big Thanks for any feedback.

  7. I have bent Cap One's ear, politely, more times then I wish to remember. Latest was yesterday. They say I am not blocked. I'll let the thread know in a few days after another go at Citibank Asoke.

With both cards doing it, I seriously doubt it's a magnetic strip problem. Probably the CIRRUS network thing unless Cap One has placed some type of hold on your account...but since you have already bent Cap One's ear several times it's probably the CIRRUS network thing.

  8. I am sorry. I should of been more clear.

The 1st time I tried to use a ATM card, which was NOT a Capital One ATM, I did not read the instructions before hand until the screen and I had a stare down. Then I handled it correctly.

The three times I tried Capital One ATM over a period of a few days (both mine and my wife's) at Citibank Asoke we got the 'Invalid transaction ...' message. Which maybe, as Pib pointed out to me, the magnetic strip. No luck, to date, with Capital One. Will give it one more go Saturday before I am off to the States and will report on same. Sorry for the confusion

    JFC,

When I 1st used the Citibank ATM I stuck my card in and waited and waited until I 'read' the darn instructions to slide it in and quickly pull the card out.

And then it still didn't work???

  9. Pib, You may be right on the magnetic strip being done in. Never thought of that angle. I'll order up another one when I get back to the States next weekend. Though I shall still pursue State Farm or Schwab so I can be fee free with another ATM card.

    JFC,

When I 1st used the Citibank ATM I stuck my card in and waited and waited until I 'read' the darn instructions to slide it in and quickly pull the card out.

  10. JFC, I have no doubt it worked for you but for my card and my wifes it did not. It has become a hit and miss deal in it being accepted at many ATMS. All getting the 'Invalid Transaction ...' message. It is a pain in the rear end to keep on coming back to a ATM to find the time of the day it may work. Which is why I am giving up the ghost on Capital One (ATM). Customer Service just says 'try again' OR 'let us send you another card'. Love the Credit card and the cash rewards. Never a problem with it. I'll be trying again Saturday at Citibank. Thanks for all the valuable information you give along with others!

JGM, the Cap One ATM card in its new Cirrus version definitely will work at the CitiBank ATMs in BKK at Asoke and Sukhumvit roads...no question about it... Unfortunately, CitiBank only has those ATMs at one location in all of Thailand, so their accessibility is limited.

    Snipped ....

  11. I have kept on trying my Capital One at AEON Machines (Paragon, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani) and it does not work. Same 'invalid transaction' message. I am glad you had luck at Citibank for I have not so far with my Capital One ATM. Same message as above. In using another ATM card at Citibank I noticed the exchange rate difference (being less). I do not get into the details as you do (I should) and the difference was so close to the 150bt fee. I am going to try the Capital One ATM one more time in Citibank when I get into BKK Friday and see what happens.

A bit more about Capital One, and their new ATM card on the Cirrus only network...

The good news is, I was able to make an ATM withdrawal using the Cap One ATM card with no problem and no 150 baht ATM fee at the CitiBank branch at the Interchange Tower, corner of Asoke and Sukhumvit roads. (On this occasion, I didn't have the time/opportunity to try the card first at an AEON ATM, although I'm presuming it wouldn't have worked there anyway).

    SNIPPED ...

The not so good news is, the w/d didn't produce a particularly good exchange rate...

Suffice to say, for the time being, I'm reconfiguring things a bit to use the Cap One account more for paying U.S. bills, and handling ATM cash needs with other VISA logo cards thru AEON.

  12. I whole heartedly agree with your comment to see it in writing. Which I will do before I leap off the cliff in signing up them. I have had back and forth emails with my State Farm agent and State Farm customer service. Below, just for informational purposes, is what State Farm said in my questions I presented to them.

"Thank you for contacting State Farm Bank®.

Our ATM card is not affiliated with any other bank, Our Check Card is affiliated with VISA. The difference between the two cards is where the ATM Card can only be used at ATMs the VISA Check Card can be used at both ATMs and to make point of sale transactions.

Our system should automatically refund any ATM surcharges assessed to your account at the the end of your monthly statement cycle. However, sometimes in foreign countries, because of the conversion, our system doesn't pick up the surcharge. If that is the case we would be able to refund any surcharge assessed as long as you save your receipts showing the ATM surcharges.

State Farm Bank does not charge a currency exchange fee and customers will receive rate established by VISA when they use their Visa CheckCard abroad."

Thanks to all for their feedback. Schwab still seems the way for me but I'll find more out on State Farm when I get back to the States in a few weeks.

    snipped ...

And even if I called one of their customer reps who gave me certain info over the phone, I would ask them where can I view the info online/in writing as disclosures/fee structures are suppose to be clear and easily available. What's in writing counts; what a customer rep mistakenly tells you is just a mistake that usually ends up working against you/costing you money with an apology from the next customer rep that you angerly call who gives you the correct info.[/left]

  13. I would try the switch but I have had my fill of Capital One. Least on the Banking side. Plus $10 refund of ATM charges is only two pulls on a Non AEON Machine. And where we live the closest AEON ATM is in Khon Kaen. A two hour round trip drive from Kutdu, Nongbulamphu.

The Capital One Visa Rewards Credit Card is great with none of that 1% or more transaction charge. And they are constantly on the check for fraud.

State Farm (USA Insurance company) has a banking side and reimbursement of foreign ATM fees. Since I have insurance through them I am looking at that as an option along with Schwab.

Yes Pib....I'd agree, there's a likelihood of that, if someone is already an existing Cap One customer, and wants to shift to a different kind of account.... Though, since they don't open checking accounts online for people from those certain states, it also may not work if a person happens to have a residence address from one of those states....I'd be interested to hear the outcome from anyone who tries.

  14. A Thank You to all for the valuable information within this thread. As one who has a Capital One ATM card that no longer works in AEON machines I have been looking for an alternative. I am giving up the use of the Capital One ATM (non branded ATM) for several reasons. One being due to their switch to CIRRUS and not being able to be use within AEON ATMs and now the frequent 'Invalid Transaction' messages that come and go on other ATMs. Thanks to all

  15. After you had me turn around and look the other way to the Interchange Building for Citibank I just did an ATM withdrawal there. The location, for me, is very convenient when I am in BKK. Much more so than Paragon when AEON or should I say Capital One Non branded ATM card worked. For this exercise I used a local USA Credit Union Debit card, VISA, with PLUS on the back. I AM NOT a fan of debit cards and use only a credit card for all POS purchases. I Use this debit card as a back up means to get money.

The transaction went through smoothly. I pulled 15,000bt ($500 max per day). The receipt, to me was very confusing and it was not until I got back to the room to look up the actual deduction online that I could verify that I did not get hit with the 150bt fee. There was NO indication of this for the ATM did not ask the typical query as to whether you want to go ahead with the transaction. I just could not figure out the amounts. 15,000bt was $489.22. The 1% fee was separate (another reason I do not use this card). I am going to use my Capital One ATM later to see if it works.

It may not be convenient for everyone, but the other no 150 baht fee ATMs in Bangkok that I'm aware of are the CitiBank ones located in the Exchange Tower building at the corner of Sukhumvit and Asoke Rd., at the same corner as the BTS Asoke and MRT Sukhumvit stations...

I would assume they accept Cirrus network cards because CitiBank is a big international bank company, but I've never really had a reason to check on that before... I guess now I have a reason to check on that...

  16. Call me blind or tunnel vision but where are the Citibank ATM's within the Exchange Tower? I am always over there, when in BKK, because I opened my Kasikorn account within the branch there. Now, I will admit I have not wandered around within the Exchange Tower looking for a Citibank ATM.

I am glad I found this thread for it cleared up my use of AEON with my Capital ATM no longer working. I guess I will sign up for online checking (my zip had no branch) and go that route (eventually).

Thanks to all for the information!

  17. I can verify that the Capital One ATM card with no Visa or MC logo (just PLUS logo on back) had stopped working at AEON ATMS. It started around end of December. Beginning of January. I used same in AEON in Central Festival Khon Kaen and in Paragon ATMS. Would get 'Invalid Transaction'. At 1st the message was hit and miss. Sometimes get it, try a few minutes later and would get go through. I had made 'numerous' calls back to Capital One about the message and no one there had a clue other then to say 'try again'.

For the last month I have been in an area where there is no AEON ATM and now that I am in BKK I got the familiar message of invalid transaction. Surfed into this thread and now, I think, know why the bloody hassle.

    Snipped ....

Their ATM card (no VISA or MC logo) associated with their savings accounts, which now runs thru the Cirrus network, apparently will not work since AEON appears to not accept Cirrus cards. However, I've yet to be able to make that kind of withdrawal to be able to personally confirm it. However, the denial has been reported here by another TV member who tried it.

  18. Just a word of advice. The 747-combi craft do NOT have seat back entertainment. Least the one I flew on from TPE to BKK that went onto Amsterdam. I do NOT know if the fly the route you desire.

The advantage with Eva is the seat back entertainment, Thai have a singe screen on their 747 flights.

  19. Thank Heavens for the Internet.

The parade of High Schooler's going to school and back as my wife beats me when I wave.

Watching my Schitzu chase the neighbors chickens.

So much to do and see. :-)

  20. Absolutely, in a not so distant past life in a far off land in Special Forces it was only for the money shot. Kill not injure.

    Snipped ...

A sniper is taught to go for a head shot, as a definite kill, not a leg shot. When someone is running the only thing that stays in a constant is the head, the legs and body move too much as well as the arms.
