  1. Brokerage and bank charges here are too high to make it worthwhile, you're better off going offshore for this. You wont be able to buy new issue bonds but you can trade the secondary market. Maybank could be an option for you, more likely is Interactive Brokers which is excellent and inexpensive. https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/home.php https://www.maybank-ke.co.th/en/products-services/products-services/offshore-trading/
  2. Wood preservatives protect against bugs et al and is cheap enough, whatever wood you decide to use, perhaps treat the underside at a minimum.
  3. Yes, except it gets marginally more expensive, the further away you are from Bangkok, Chiang Mai is usually 2 baht higher.
  4. 13 weeks, using VFS, recieved six weeks ago.
  5. The FT tariffs were increased during the year because the price of oil went sky high.
  6. I do all those things except the bi-carb trick plus I don't touch alcohol, I might just give it a try. Thanks. I read recently that there's a procedure being offered in the UK now to fox GERD and the broken sphincter valve which is quite simple, it has an 85% success rate. I wonder how long before we see it offered here.
  7. It is and it is......buying a house in a company name is illegal and which idiot would do that. Plenty of threads on that too.
  8. I put 2 x 5 mm thick chipboard in my loft 8 years ago, untreated. I took up two pieces recently to get to some cables and there was no sign on infestation anywhere. Single story house in the middle of a one rai termite nest.
  9. I think that's a pretty accurate guess.
  10. You said you feel wobbly every morning, something is not right, go see a decent endocrinologist, really.
  11. An article dated June but it mentions the fuels fund subsidies. https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thailands-diesel-price-to-rise-by-another-baht-per-litre-from-tuesday/
  12. Owner occupied house are exempt from property tax, I'm pretty sure. https://www.tilleke.com/insights/new-land-and-building-tax-act-thailand/ The tax on houses applies only to those valued over THB 50 mill, we're just a little bit under that figure, only by about THB 45 million, phew, close shave that.
  13. I'm teasing you of course, but also I'm not. The fact is that people can't make up their own sets of rules on this and decide what rules they want to follow and how. The fact is you can't justify it and be right. But hey, each to their own.
  14. We have a house, we don't pay condo tax, oddly! But I did just pay my annual health insurance invoice to CIGNA the same way though if that's where you're headed. Also, my bank, UOB, let's me set up payments in advance for the entire year, they can be random or recuring monthly, the customer sets the amount and the month. As long as the bank knows the payee details, it can easily be done.
  15. And now you're going to get that tax back by trousering the fuel allowance and pension increases that you're not entitled to, neat!
  16. No different, put it on a direct debit!
  17. Google, the conundrum of low Thai inflation for answers. Meanwhile, there are 450 items in the basket of goods that measures Thai inflation, sadly pringles or beer aren't in there,
  18. Just back from the pharmacy after buying controloc, the price has fallen by about 40%, the girl couldn't tell me if there was now a generic but it certainly looks that way. 40mg and 20mg, 650 and 550 respectively.
  19. We never see a bill, just a direct debit receipt for each bill and it works like clockwork, electric, water, Social Security payment, Internet, mobiles, etc., We keep eight months of bill payment money in one account for this purpose plus we transfer X to that account each month to cover all payments, also by standing order. It's not rocket science, although it might be for some.
  20. Spoken like a true Brit. BTW can I remind you what you wrote recently in another thread: "My savings and pension are not a charity to provide for the government, illegal immigrants and the poor". I'm just wondering if your fellow countrymen feel the same way about the taxes they pay!
  21. They take a different view. When I notified them this year that I'd moved back to Thailand they sent me a letter to my Thai address confirming the fact and also pointing out that I was no longer eligible for free medical care under NHS rules.
  22. I've moved back and forth a couple of times plus I've visited the UK for several months at a time. The process is the same regardless. I just call and say I've moved to X or Y and they ask the date of my move (because they want an effective date) and how long I plan to stay. I changed my bank for pension deposit purposes this year, from the UK to Thailand. They asked me for how long and I said for at least six months (anything less than 6 months and you can't change, eg not for just a holiday). That's it, no paperwork, no follow up.
  23. Go see a good endocrinologist, that doesn't sound like good advice at all.
  24. Pattaya - ultra touristy, plenty of sleaze, poor sea, issan's home from home, not really like anywhere else in Thailand. An easy introduction to Thailand for foreigners, closest likeness, a cross between Blackpool, Morecambe and Clacton. Wheels not necessary. Chiang Mai - great scenery, more normal Thailand, a bit reserved and snooty in places, heavily polluted at certain times, beg packers delight, frowns on Issan. Closest likeness, a cross between Skipton, Harrogate and ? You need wheels. Bangkok - Phew, I couldn't even begin to describe or compare.
