It’s like arguing with conspiracy theorists. You can present them with as many hard facts as you want, they still won’t believe you because they’re completely blinded! Waste of time really!
I ordered a jacket from a UK firm 3 January.Didnt think it would be a big deal, they didn't charge me the VAT but warned me that there would be charges when it arrived in the Netherlands, they gave me the option to cancel.
I tracked the jacket from Nottingham to Heathrow, then 3 towns in Germany and finally Amsterdam. It was delivered 5 February with nothing to pay.
I mailed them to say it finally arrived and no charges, they replied that I got away with it,they were getting stories about some people having serious tax and courier charges.

The point is it has its niche which can attract people and not just sex tourists as a lot of other attractions like street food can flourish.
Then ask what will attract the next generation to a modern sanitised Pattaya that is no different to half the beach resorts in the world?
How many people do you hear saying Thailand has become a great place to visit compared to 20-30 years ago (ignoring the exchange rate). Of those that say it has, ask them why is it better than Spain or Miami.
Many tourists like to see things stuck in the past such as preserved villages. Even more so if they are actually still functioning as they used to.
It all comes down to supply and demand. If the girls have better options the supply will dry up. If the bar scene experience becomes unpleasant or places like Amsterdam and Eastern Europe offer something better/cheaper then demand will fall.
The mayor thinks he is preparing Pattaya for the future and will say he was right as the last bar closes. In reality he could go either way. His way will finish off the bars but he could have kept them as the main attraction. Unfortunately he sees much more financial rewards from big business than small business. The risk is, like KSR, just because it looks nice and modern, doesn't mean people will want to travel thousands of miles to visit. Being so close to BKK means it should be popular no matter what the mayor does. Will killing off its only stand out attraction be a good idea, who knows? I certainly don't.
So long as the sun shines there will be a lot of us wanting to spend our cold winters there. If all the Gogo's and Massage places disappeared it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. If the Mayor of Amsterdam gets her way the red light District will be closed down, and moved to a so called erotic center on the edge of town.Enjoy your freedoms while you still have them.

My point about the armed soldiers is that pre-GFA the border that divided the two half's of Ireland was a lot like that that divided the two half's of Germany and the Berlin wall.
The GFA acknowledges the existence of the border, but also says it needs to be an invisible border with no checks were people can freely cross. If you think your going to reinstate a hard border there without bringing back those watchtowers and armed soldiers I would say you are very much mistaken.
I would also point out that half the citizens of the North don't want to be UK subjects and the North didn't vote to leave the EU. Both those things have been forced on it's citizens.
As for my bias my ancestors were Protestants(quakers) who were forced to leave County Cork after partition, so I'm not exactly biased in favor of it.
The only border controls will be for goods, and set well back from the actual border line.It will only be only in the Republic untill the DUP discover wide spread fraud and then they will want one too.

whats a VHS cassette ?
It's the one that all the porn was on! Betamax never stood a chance.
It's also a bit of a myth about beta being better than VHS,the only difference I recall was the picture on the screen was visible when you fast forward.

So it has become an oversized, airconditioned strolling park? But tell us, how many folks are in there....? I live 10km out of town and need more reason to drive in than to get into a mall. If it was for the exercise, and to get out of a little box condo, I would do the Beach Rd or Jomtiem front while it isn't so hot.
There's packs of marauding dogs there now, according to what I read.

An old recipe, from a food critic in one of the Sunday papers if I remember right.
Peel cucumber
Slice lengthwise
Take out pips with teaspoon.
Slice thinly.
Arrange on plate.
Dress with vinegar oil,season
Sprinkle herb of choice, dill or parsley?
Then throw into bin.

I rarely come onto Thaivisa anymore and only even bother when I'm browsing my Facebook profile and an interesting story comes my way.
I then click on the link and even if it's been a month or two, or 6, your comments stand out because they're the same claptrap every time. You're like a wind up doll.
You keep making ridiculous predictions about how no one wants to come here anymore, that the world will forget the country, there will only be 1 million visitors next year blah blah blah when the only thing keeping visitors away from the country are the current ridiculous travel restrictions.
Visitors will return tomorrow and in big numbers once travel restrictions are lifted, including border crossings re-opened and flights resuming normal service.
There will be 20-30 million annual visitors in no time, once the global economy recovers.
You only need the last five words, the rest is just claptrap.

I disagree.
The last few high seasons have seen a decline in western tourists here. Many of the reasons for this has been debated. Eg. strong baht, Thailand no longer a cheap holiday, other options in the regions etc.
I started this thread way before covid, because businesses catering for westerners were struggling even back then.
The newbie dreamers were in short supply then, and will be for years to come.
I don't think there will be a stampede. Initially, I think there will be a trickle back of loyal sex tourists as airlines slowly increase capacity.
Many of those returning may be disappointed at what they see when they get here. Others may wait to come back until Pattaya is around 70% of what it was before covid.
The rebuilding of the tourism sector here, including sex tourists, will not happen in 1 month, just because the Thai government opens the borders. It will take years, with many not wanting to spend their hard earned to come back here until they feel it is worth it to do so, as in, a large amount of bars and restaurants operating again.
As long as I can simply go online and book a flight, hotel, bell bus and hotel, with no complications and massive price hikes I will probably be back.I would expect to show that I have had the Vaccine and that I have medical insurance, more than that then I will stay here during the winter and suck it up.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, just letting you know where I stand on this issue. I'm not like most expats here.
I am dynamically opposed to the bar scene in thailand. If it were up to me nana, soi cowboy, walking street, all of it would be overpriced hotels for Chinese tourists and condos etc. I can't stand bar girls and I can't drink alcohol anymore due to poor health.
I like good health care, low cost of living, and that's about it. Its ok here in isan but I've got major health issues that even the docs in bangkok can't assist with anymore. And immigration is just annoying here.
My experience with india is just hot and cheap. Completely immersed in cultural heritage but more westernized than thailand in lots of ways. Maybe a little grimy in some areas. All ok with me. I haven't stayed long enough to have more of an impression of the place, I guess. I guess I should do that.
I met a brit couple in Pattaya who spent 3 months every year in India, they did not want to live there permanently because they were old and the health care was not up to much.It was some years ago so things may have changed.
I am open to a trip to Goa instead of Thailand,I don't spend much time in bars but I do like the girls and the odd beer. The night life is of little interest now days,I have served my time.

Labour MPs should have voted for Theresa May’s Brexit deal – then the party wouldn’t be in this mess
We can see clearly now: Labour MPs should have voted for May’s deal. We would have left the EU with the guarantee of staying in its customs union.

"UK citizens have always had to show passports to visit any EU country. "
Not true.
There's a difference between a citizen and a resident.I am a British citizen residing in the Netherlands. The British have only had ID cards to the best of my knowledge during wartime. In the Netherlands everybody over 14 has to carry ID,I have a ID card come residents permit but if I didn't I would have to carry my passport.I don't think you can get on a plane or boat without showing a passport not sure how it works with cars on a cross channel ferry.
