Man drowns after getting caught in a rip at Kata Noi Beach
0ffshore360 replied to snoop1130's topic in Phuket News
You are basically correct. But "just get more kids in the water" ? Investigate where the drownings mostly occur and the curcumstances of them ! Thailand has quite long coastline but it has copius bodies of lethal waters far from the sunny beaches. -

Ok. So there are significant factors that skew your provision of statistical numbers if they do not differentiate in the event of drownings or associated rescue statistics those that are immigrant victims vs those as already born nationals that (presumably) have been educated from an early age with respect to water safety. "Back then" would indicate some doubt as to the continuance of mandated water safety and/or swimming lessons. Sadly the current social attitude towards personal safety is gravitating rapidly towards the concept of affordable security while bureaucratic demands commandeer reductions in what has been paid for. -

I have no understanding of that comment. When it comes to rescues of people from a beach catering to "tourist" which includes local and foreigner where "life saver " personnel are present then yes those rescued mostly survive yet so often attribute that to their own stamina etc etc. Those that are ignorant of /ignore warning signs on beach fronts against swimming should pay dearly for rescues in that event. I have alternative thoughts on those parents that allow children to unsupervised entertain themselves in bodies of water capable of killing them. Your adult tourist ? Som num nah ! -

Point taken. But that is relevant to the education offered to (probably) immigrants to the UK and therefore an omission of relevance to the UK . -

Swimming and knowing to float are not so closely related. For those that know how to float the enemy is not immediate drowning but in longer time terms hypothermia . -

A non swimmer should contemplate negotiating a spot in the paddling pool then. So long as he/she /it can tolerate a significant level of urinary contamination as an example. To date not come across too many Indian and African Thai. -

I fully understand that. The focus of my post was ( I intended) that water safety is something a tourist perhaps should have acquired in evidence of financial capacity to be a tourist. The reality is that the leading cause of death of children in Thailand is drowning. -
Sadly that is probably an accurate assessment. Certainly not exclusive to Thailand given the numerous examples featured in international news over the impact of foreign workers , legal or not, taking away employment from local aspirants. I use the term :aspirant" in place of "worker" because increasingly I observe the self righteousness of presumed employees who apparently expect to be paid to be "online" and ignore the presence of "customers" until challenged for attention ! Bring on the workers who understand the function of their employment .... please.

It is not so often that a drowning off a tourist beach involves a Thai and is unikely a tourist is interested in dedicating time to such a information regardless . But perhaps a mandatory educational attempt would be a well made effort to offset the sad and sickening drowning annual death rates of Thai children that occur more often than not in locations far far from the sea. That is not to say that a mature male tourist does not deserve some sympathy for a death due to presumed ignorance of known risk. -

What percentage of a population is required to be educated for economic growth in an aspiring economy increasingly reliant on industrial output with heavy invested adoption of AI to the detriment of workers educated or not? The spiraling down of any previous egalitarian promises for even the slightest chances of human social utopia is accelerating at approximately the same rate as the reduction of democratic principles . -

Your condescending jibes and attacks on personalities you do not even know are notorious across many forum sites due to the insidious efforts to emulate a persona similar to Boris J and Don the Dump. Your best efforts are approximately equivalent to the best ICE powered vehicle at less than 50%. In serious developmental terms EV vehicles are comparatively at about Model A stage mostly in terms of battery recharge capacity vs time/vs safety. That is due to the vested interest of corporate petrochem interests determined to not relinquish the monopoly of both transport energies and established vehicle brands. In my younger years i can and do not deny I enjoyed the adrenaline rush derived from a (seriously modified) but genuinely impractical vehicle which by comparison to contemporary production units from Japan were quite pathetic. Power to weight ratios were touted as some sort of formula. Then un-sprung weight related to traction control ! Then the energy crisis ! OMG ! Fuel prices doubled. People still had to travel ! Extorted ....again ! It has never stopped. ! Motor racing is at least as popular as ever. Same for "sports" in stadiums payed for by taxpayers but demand an exorbitant entry fee to witness corporate playboys and girls strut their stuff ?Kick the ball? \ Do you feel no pain Sam? OH ! -

Is there a 2nd hand market for original watches within Thailand ??
0ffshore360 replied to Chivas's topic in General Topics
I understand the dilemma for the OP. I have gifted a small solid gold ladies wristwatch to my wife. It was originally handed down from my Grandmother on my Father's side. Estimated age derived from records of family history would indicate it would be at minimum between 100 and 120 years old. It has a double sided hinged casing and is only about 2 cm across with a spring loaded expanding strap with security clasp. It is in perfect working order and keeps time despite only having a fully wound working time of 12 hours. I have tried to get a valuation (not in Thailand) but without any realistic consensus. Two Jeweler/watchmaker wanted to open.it just to check if the mechanism is an early Rolex which I declined because they could give no guarantee that by doing so would not cause functional issues as a result. My wife is Thai and so naturally very proud to have a GOLD heirloom to wear on special occasions. My interest in realistic value is about insurance rather than sale value. I have no emotional concerns because I never knew my Grandmother and from my fathers rare mention was not remembered long after her funeral. So quite sad that a material possession continues to represent more interest than the original recipient. Museums are even more morbid in that aspect. -
I would hesitate to assume too much so quickly. The usual pattern at the start of the rain season , regardless of it coming early , late, or in accordance with legends, it almost invariably has a false start. After a week or two with some promising rainfall there is usually a break of up to a month before rains come in earnest . If this does occur but with a decrease in the constant high temperatures experienced so far this year I for one will have no objections !

Such sentiments were also expressed during the Vietnam War protests . The only significant difference is the instantaneous social media distribution of imagery that when specifically targeted for impact provides an opportunity for focus on a specific distractional criticism of rather than the overall "cause" of the protests.
