No they were hoping for a lot more liberal tears to drink. With maga cruelty is the point. It's all about making other people suffer. Fascist mass deportations. Operation Wetback but much bigger! Bring it on! Separated families. Crying babies. YEAH yeah yeah. Blood in the streets from the military to our own people (as long as minorities and critics of dear leader Trump). Can't wait. Most aren't even as dumb as to really believe Trump cares about them or will actually improve their lives. But they hope to get more sadistic thrills a la Roman circuses and of course they seem to like his perverted sense of humor and weird YMCA jerk it around dance for some reason that non magas can't fathom.

President Joe Biden's Historical Legacy is Ruined
Jingthing replied to Jingthing's topic in Political Soapbox
Surely that was thought about. A problem in Michigan and overall there is a good bit of antisemitism nationally. Perhaps if Gore hadn't picked a Jew he would have won. Shapiro would have pretty much guaranteed Pennsylvania. But there were other pros and cons. Harris and Shapiro both coastal lawyers so too similar. Harris is married to a Jew so to many Americans that would look too Jewy. One Jew maybe but when you add a mixed race woman president plus TWO Jews, mainstream America balks. Also it was thought that Walz could help with the midwesterner regular white guy working class vote. Shapiro certainly couldn't have. Perhaps most important but hard to ever know for sure, Shapiro is very alpha male, and he met with Harris and said he wanted more of a co-presidency where he had leadership on certain issues. Harris who wanted to be the first woman president couldn't stomach that. Understandably so. Remember vice presidency is a pretty awful job. Be a yes man and be a warm body if the president exits. Reading between the lines, I can tell you that based on media I read, American Jews weren't angry about this. Aware of it but understanding. The number one issue for American Jews in this cycle was different than other groups. No, not Israel. Saving American democracy. If Harris had good reasons to think Walz was a better bet for winning than Shapiro, then it was a reasonable choice to make. Of course neither ticket would have won. But if Biden had stayed it would have been a REAL landslide perhaps as bad as Mondale. Trump Harris wasn't actually a landslide but it was a clear solid win. If there are future elections after maga / Project 2025 has their dark way with American democracy, definitely Shapiro will be one of the potential democratic stars. He's more of a top of the ticket guy. -

What Americans Want and why Democrats Failed

I already got the answer to my question. So I'm going to exit this topic as it's not useful to me any longer. But y'all are very welcome to carry on to your dear hearts content. Have fun my droogs. Thanks to Alabama man. -
Expanding on the red - blue self sorting that as you agree is definitely a big thing in the U.S. a problem I have found with that is that blue areas tend to be much more expensive! I have a little hobby of always having a short list of possible U.S. destinations I might move back to if I'm forced to for whatever reason and in my case they need to be as low budget as possible! So by necessity my lists are always dominated by places that are very red. Now of course not all people in even very red areas are red, but moving where you don't really belong isn't at all ideal. I have lived in more red areas before but nothing extreme. You know the kind of place where the first thing people ask is what church do you go to. There are also some options in some blue cities, but they tend to be places with high crime and cold weather. So really not so great.

Exactly though it is definitely more feasible in the internet age. I have found U.S. financial institutions extremely unfriendly to expats and that has given me major headaches for decades now. If I knew what I know now, I might have hesitated, but I don't regret it either. So many people move abroad totally unprepared, with very little research, and end up being forced back in shame very quickly. Not that there's anything wrong with moving back if you want to of course.

Good point about tax. I don't know the details but Portugal did some things making things less tax friendly for expats. So of course you need to look at tax anywhere. Some people solve this by having multiple homes and never being a tax resident anywhere. Not for me but many wealthy people like it. Another question is what you get for the tax. In France for example you have full access to their health system which is world class.
