Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A carpenter has been arrested after attempting to steal a 1-baht gold necklace from a jewellery shop in Bangkok. The man reportedly committed the crime to settle his debts and support his family, claiming that his monthly income was insufficient to cover expenses. At approximately 14:30 on 31 January, the police at Bung Kum Police Station received a report of a gold theft at a jewellery shop in the Khlong Kum area of Bung Kum District. The shop assistant told authorities that a man, dressed in a red collared shirt, entered the store with the intention of purchasing a gold necklace. While browsing, he suddenly snatched a 1-baht gold chain from the assistant’s hands and fled the scene on a white Yamaha Fino motorcycle. After the robbery, the police quickly launched a manhunt. Officers from the Bung Kum Police Station tracked the suspect to a rented room in Soi Lat Phrao 87, where he was arrested. The suspect was found in possession of the stolen gold necklace and the motorcycle used in the crime. During questioning, the suspect, identified as a carpenter and former military conscript, confessed to the crime. He explained that he had been struggling financially, working as a furniture maker with a monthly salary of only 3,000 Thai baht, which was not enough to cover his debts or provide for his family. He stated that, desperate to make ends meet and with a young child to care for, he impulsively decided to steal the gold to pay off his loans. Pol. Col. Athiwat Nuchthaworn, Chief of Bung Kum Police Station, confirmed that the suspect would be charged with robbery and held in custody pending further investigation. -- 2025-02-01

The migrants, who had each reportedly paid 50,000 baht to a Thai broker for illegal passage to Malaysia, were found huddled under a tarpaulin in the vehicle’s cargo area. At around 19:00 on 31 January, Police Lieutenant Colonel Phanuwat Rattanaphan of Nabon Police Station received a report of an crash on Highway 41, in the Thung Song-Surat Thani southbound lane, in Moo 9, Kaeo Saen Subdistrict. Police and rescue workers from the Pracharuamjai Foundation were dispatched to the scene. On arrival, officers found a damaged pink Hino lorry with registration plate from Lampang, which had veered off the road into the central reservation. A power pole had been toppled by the impact. The driver had already fled by the time authorities arrived. Upon opening the tarpaulin covering the rear of the lorry, officers discovered 53 Myanmar nationals, including men and women. One person suffered a broken leg, while others had minor injuries. The migrants, appearing exhausted and distressed, could not speak Thai. Through an interpreter, authorities learned that the group had been transported from the Thai-Myanmar border and was en route to Malaysia. Each migrant had paid a Thai broker 50,000 baht for the journey. Investigators believe the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled following the crash, leaving the migrants stranded. Authorities are now working to locate and question the driver. Meanwhile, immigration officials will process the Myanmar nationals for repatriation. -- 2025-02-01

Good Samaritan Saves Young Woman from Bridge Jump in Trang A 25-year-old woman suffering from depression was saved from an apparent suicide attempt after a passerby spotted her sitting on the edge of a bridge and quickly intervened. Picture from responders. A 25-year-old woman suffering from depression was saved from an apparent suicide attempt after a passerby spotted her sitting on the edge of a bridge and quickly intervened. Police in Mueang Trang received an urgent report on January 30, from a concerned citizen about a woman attempting to jump from Khlong Nam Chet Bridge on Sritrang 1 Road, Thap Thiang. Officers, led by Lt. Wisanupon Duangsri, rushed to the scene along with emergency responders. Upon arrival, they found that a quick-thinking Good Samaritan, who had been driving past, had already grabbed the woman and pulled her to safety. Several other bystanders soon arrived to assist. The distressed woman, in visible emotional turmoil, was crying uncontrollably and unable to speak. Her motorbike was found parked about 50 metres away, with her identification card inside, allowing police to confirm her identity. Authorities attempted to comfort the woman and persuade her to go to Trang Police Station for support, but she refused to leave. Instead, she requested officers to call her mother. However, when they did, she broke down in tears and once again refused to speak. Moments later, she tried to walk away and get back on her motorbike, but police stopped her for her own safety. Determined to leave, she walked nearly 100 metres down the road, with officers closely following to prevent further harm. After persistent efforts, police finally managed to contact her older sister and boyfriend, who arrived at the scene. They spent over an hour trying to console her, during which she gradually calmed down and agreed to take her prescribed medication for depression. Eventually, officers escorted her to her sister’s home in Mueang Trang, ensuring she was in a safe and supportive environment. One of the Good Samaritans, Mr. Nantawat Pansri, 26, recalled the moment he suspected something was wrong. “I saw her take off her shoes and sit on the edge of the bridge, which seemed unusual. I drove a little further but decided to turn around. By the time I got back, a man in a white shirt had already pulled her down to safety.” He added that the river below was shallow and filled with sharp rocks, meaning a jump would have resulted in severe injuries or worse. Lt. Wisanupon Duangsri confirmed that the woman was battling depression, family conflicts, and relationship issues. “She was completely silent and unwilling to share her struggles,” he said. He urged her family to monitor her closely and offer emotional support as she continues her treatment. Police have emphasised the importance of mental health awareness and intervention, encouraging people to reach out for help when needed. If you or anyone you know is in emotional distress, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand 24-hour hotline: 02 713 6791 (English), 02 713 6793 (Thai) or the Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai). Please also contact your friends or relatives at this time if you have feelings of loneliness, stress or depression. Seek out help. -- 2025-02-01

Picture from responders. A 51-year-old man, missing for four days, was found dead in a eucalyptus forest in Chachoengsao province. His charred remains were discovered by friends and family who had been searching for him after noticing a foul smell in the area. At 15:15 on 31 January, police from Phanom Sarakham Police Station received a report of a burned body found in a eucalyptus plantation in Moo 9, Koh Khanun subdistrict, Phanom Sarakham district. Officers, along with forensic experts and rescue teams, were dispatched to the scene. The deceased was identified as Mr. Kiangkrai, 51, a resident of Na Kae district, Nakhon Phanom province. His badly burned body was found lying on its back, surrounded by scorched grass. A lighter was found nearby, and initial examinations revealed no signs of struggle or physical assault. According to friends and relatives, Mr. Kiangkrai was a habitual drinker who suffered from mobility issues and poor eyesight. He had last been seen four days earlier, when he took his cattle to graze in the area. When he failed to return home, his loved ones began searching for him. During the search, they discovered his herd of cattle on the other side of the forest. Later, they noticed a strong, unpleasant odour and followed it to the grim discovery of his burned remains. Authorities believe that Mr. Kiangkrai may have started a fire to keep warm, only for it to spread uncontrollably, ultimately causing his death. However, an autopsy has been ordered to confirm the exact cause. The body has been transferred for forensic examination before being released to the family for religious rites. Investigations are ongoing to rule out foul play. -- 2025-02-01

Pictures from responders. Two brothers lost their lives in the early hours of the morning of 31 January, after their pickup truck crashed into an electricity pole in Krathum Baen district, Samut Sakhon. The crash occurred at approximately 03:30, on Economic Road, inbound to Maha Chai, near a Toyota Sure dealership in Khlong Maduea subdistrict. Police officers, medics, and rescue teams rushed to the scene, where they found a heavily damaged Isuzu D-Max pickup truck from Bangkok wedged against a electricity pole. The vehicle’s rear cargo cage had detached from the impact, landing almost 100 metres away. Debris and vehicle parts were strewn across the road. Inside the wreckage, two men were found dead: • Wisarut 21, a water delivery driver, who was in the driver’s seat. • Kittiphop 20, his younger brother, who was in the passenger seat. Rescue workers used hydraulic cutting equipment to extract the victims. It took nearly an hour to remove Wisarut’s body as the driver’s side was crushed against the pole. Their grieving family members and friends arrived at the scene, struggling to comprehend the sudden loss. Friends of the victims revealed that earlier in the night, the brothers had visited a friend’s home in Soi Wat Khae Rai, just a few kilometres away. Wisarut had been feeling unwell and took a nap while his younger brother socialised. Later, they left together to drive home to Soi Wat Ban Bo. Heartbreakingly, the brothers had been planning to enter monkhood next year alongside their youngest sibling as a tribute to their parents. Now, only their surviving brother will be able to fulfil that wish. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to determine the cause of the crash. Investigators suspect that the vehicle was speeding, or that another vehicle forced them off course, leading to the devastating collision. The bodies have been sent to Siriraj Hospital’s Forensic Institute for autopsy before being released to the family for funeral rites. -- 2025-02-01

Picture from responders. A domestic dispute ended in a murder-suicide on Koh Samui after a man killed his wife, locked their 12-year-old son inside the house, and then took his own life. Police in Bo Phut, Koh Samui, were alerted to the incident in the early hours of 31 January. Officers from Bo Phut Police Station, forensic experts, and rescue workers rushed to the scene at a rented wooden house in Ban Plai Laem Soi 4. At the front of the house, they discovered the body of Mayura 47, a hotel housekeeper. She was found face-down in a pool of blood with multiple deep slash wounds on her neck and arms. Nearby, under a mango tree, the body of her husband, Ubon, 53, a labourer, was found with a piece of cloth stuffed in his mouth and having hung himself. The couple's 12-year-old son recounted the horrifying events to police. He explained that his stepfather and mother had been together for five years but were not legally married. Their relationship was troubled, with frequent arguments due to his stepfather's drinking habits. Ubon had promised to quit drinking, but on the night of the incident, Mayura returned home to find him consuming alcohol again. A heated argument ensued. When the confrontation escalated, the boy tried to intervene and pleaded with his stepfather not to hurt his mother. However, Ubon locked him inside the house before attacking Mayura. Desperate to escape, the boy broke a window and ran to a neighbour for help. He then called the police, but by the time he returned, both his mother and stepfather were already dead. Police are continuing their investigation but believe the incident was the result of long-standing domestic tensions fuelled by alcohol abuse. The young boy is now in the care of local authorities while arrangements for his future are being made. -- 2025-02-01

Pictures from responders. CCTV below. A fire broke out at Somdet Phra Yuppharat Hospital in Ubon Ratchathani, on January 31, after an arson attack, prompting an evacuation of patients and hospital staff. The incident occurred at around 16:20 in Building 3, on the third floor, where the hospital’s ear, nose, and throat ward is located. According to witness reports, a middle-aged man carrying a backpack was seen entering the building. He allegedly ignited and threw a Molotov cocktail into the ward before fleeing the scene. Thick black smoke quickly filled the corridors, causing panic among staff, patients, and medical personnel. Firefighters and rescue teams responded immediately, working alongside hospital staff to evacuate all patients safely. After an intense one-hour effort, emergency crews managed to bring the blaze under control. Security footage confirmed witness accounts, showing the suspect entering the building with an incendiary device. Following an urgent investigation, police have since apprehended a 40-year-old man, Piboon, believed to be responsible for the attack. During interrogation, the suspect admitted to planning the attack days in advance. He stated that he rented a car on 26 January before travelling to Phibun Mangsahan District to make merit. He later surveyed the hospital premises on multiple occasions before returning on the day of the attack. On the afternoon of 31 January, he entered Buildings 2 and 3 to assess security before retrieving a gun, petrol, and alcohol from his car. After starting the fire, he reportedly fired a gun at hospital staff who attempted to extinguish the flames. He later discarded the weapon in a nearby field before fleeing the scene. According to Police Colonel Sinchai Nimppunyakamphong, Deputy Commander of Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Police, the suspect fled to Na Yia District, where he crashed his car into several people, injuring three. Investigators believe the suspect was acting out of personal distress. Reports suggest he had been defrauded in a land deal six years ago, losing 3 million baht, which forced him to sell his home and car to repay debts. While not diagnosed with any mental illness, police suspect his actions were an attempt to gain attention. Authorities are now assessing the damage to the hospital, believed to be millions of baht and investigating the full motive behind the attack. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, thanks to the swift actions of emergency responders and hospital personnel. -- 2025-02-01 ScreenRecording_02-01-2025 03-37-09_1.mp4

Picture from responders. A 78-year-old man lost his life after the pickup truck he was driving veered off the road and overturned, trapping him inside the vehicle. His 13-year-old granddaughter sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. The incident occurred on the morning of 31 January, near the U-turn at Ban Samakki, on the inbound route to Lampang city. Police Lieutenant Thanapoon Krueya, an investigator from Mueang Lampang Police Station, received a report of the accident and immediately coordinated with forensic doctors from Lampang Hospital and the local rescue team. Upon arrival, emergency responders found a green Mazda pickup truck, an older model with a fitted canopy, overturned in the central reservation. Inside, the body of the driver, identified as Mr Oon Kawilanun, 78, of Moo 5, Nikom Phatthana subdistrict, was found trapped behind the wheel. Rescue personnel had to extricate his body from the wreckage. A 13-year-old girl, his granddaughter, was also found injured and was quickly transported to Lampang Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Preliminary investigations revealed that Mr Oon was driving his granddaughter, a special needs student, to her school at the Lampang Special Education Centre in Phra Bat subdistrict. A witness, who had been driving behind him, reported seeing Mr Oon suddenly slump forward while at the wheel. The vehicle immediately lost control, veering into the central reservation before overturning. Authorities suspect that the elderly driver may have suffered a sudden medical episode, possibly linked to an existing health condition. However, police will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. -- 2025-02-01

UPDATE Fire at Carryboy Factory: Structural Engineers Assess Damage, Area Declared Fire Hazard Zone Picture from responders. Authorities have declared the site of a major fire at the Carryboy factory in Lat Krabang a fire hazard zone after engineers determined the structure was dangerously unstable. No one is allowed to enter the building, and officials have enforced strict safety measures in the surrounding area. Following the successful containment of the blaze, engineers from the Engineering Institute of Thailand conducted an initial damage assessment. Their inspection revealed extensive structural damage, particularly on the third and fourth floors. The building’s support columns and walls showed significant cracks, while the exterior suffered severe destruction, with parts of the awnings and extensions at risk of collapse. In response, Tharapong Phetkhong, Director of Lat Krabang District and Incident Commander, established a command and support centre in front of the site. He ordered a safety perimeter around the structure and deployed personnel to assist affected workers and coordinate with relevant agencies. The Lat Krabang District Office has now officially declared the site a fire hazard zone. Under Sections 56 and 57 of the Building Control Act B.E. 2522 (1979), as amended in 1992, all construction, modification, demolition, or relocation of structures within the area is strictly prohibited until further notice. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and further assessments will determine the next steps in securing and possibly demolishing the damaged building. -- 2025-01-31 -

UPDATE Fire Engulfs Carryboy Company, Causing Over 150 Million Baht in Damage: Company Had No Fire Insurance Pictures from responders. A devastating fire broke out early morning of 31 January, at the Carryboy company, a major manufacturer of automotive accessories and camper vans, causing estimated damages of no less than 150 million baht. The company had no insurance coverage, and the blaze destroyed numerous camper vans and ambulances in production. Witnesses reported hearing a series of loud explosions as the fire rapidly spread. The fire erupted at the company’s four-storey facility on Luang Phaeng Road in the Lat Krabang district of Bangkok. The premises, covering over 10 rai, house the assembly of newly manufactured vans into ambulances and pickup trucks into camper vans for both domestic and international markets. Mr Panit Theerati, Assistant Managing Director of Carryboy, confirmed that company officials, along with relevant authorities, are working urgently to manage the crisis. He estimated the damage at a minimum of 150 million baht and admitted that the company had not taken out fire insurance. “We will conduct a full inspection of the property and its structural integrity. If necessary, we are prepared to demolish and rebuild in order to restore customer confidence as quickly as possible,” Mr Panit stated. According to initial reports, the fire originated on the third floor. Security personnel attempted to contain the flames but were unsuccessful, and the fire quickly spread throughout the facility. The exact cause remains unknown, and authorities will conduct a thorough investigation. Employees, numbering in the hundreds, arrived at the scene as news of the fire spread. Many expressed shock and sadness upon seeing their workplace engulfed in flames. Some voiced concern about their future employment, as the company has not yet issued any official communication to its staff regarding the situation. A local resident who witnessed the incident recounted that they were awakened by an explosion. At first, they dismissed the noise, but after hearing a second explosion, they looked outside and saw flames emerging from the building. “After that, there were several more explosions, and the fire quickly spread throughout the entire building. The blaze continued uncontrolled until at least 08.00” the resident said. Firefighters struggled to bring the inferno under control due to the presence of highly flammable substances such as thinners and paint, which were stored within the facility. Although there was no strong wind to spread the flames to nearby buildings, concerns remain over the potential impact of chemical fumes in the surrounding area. Fortunately, as the fire occurred outside working hours, the hundreds of employees who usually work there were not inside. Only security staff were on site at the time. Authorities are now assessing the full extent of the damage and investigating the cause of the fire. The company has pledged to take swift action to address the aftermath and rebuild its operations. -- 2025-01-31 -

Sorry, but there is nothing in this post that even starts to suggest at this stage, this was an ‘insurance job’. Seems some people on AN think every fire is an insurance job! It is amazing that unqualified people with no experience, seem to think that an insurance pay out is going to be automatic after a fire. All insurance companies look very closely to avoid paying, like with every type of claim. The investigation into fire will take weeks, depending on when access is available to all parts of the fire scene. The insurance will also have its own investigators and loss assessors reviewing the scene and all evidence, before any offer on compensation is made. -

Russian Tourists With Children Rescued After Phuket Tour Boat Sinks A Russian family’s island excursion in Phuket nearly ended in tragedy when their tour boat began taking on water near Phi Phi Island. Picture and video courtesy Phuketinsta. A Russian family’s island excursion in Phuket nearly ended in tragedy when their tour boat began taking on water near Phi Phi Island. The family, who had booked their trip through a local agency without receiving an official receipt, was left stranded at sea before being rescued by a passing fishing vessel. Mikhail, a Russian tourist vacationing in Phuket with his family, had purchased a boat tour to Phi Phi Island through a Patong based tour company. The trip cost 3,300 baht, but instead of receiving an official receipt, he was handed only a handwritten note. The tour seemed to proceed normally until disaster struck mid-journey. Passengers were suddenly alarmed by a loud scraping noise, after which the boat began rapidly taking on water. As panic set in, the crew attempted to manage the situation by bailing out water with buckets, but their efforts were proving futile. Passengers, including children, feared for their safety as the vessel continued to sink. In the ensuing chaos, one woman fell overboard and became tangled in ropes. Fortunately, quick-thinking passengers and crew managed to rescue her before she was swept away by the current. As the boat’s condition worsened, a nearby fishing vessel spotted the distressed tourists and came to their aid. The fishermen managed to transfer all passengers onto their boat, averting what could have been a tragedy. Once safely back on land, Mikhail and the other tourists contacted the Patong tour company to report the incident. However, instead of expressing concern, the agency reportedly dismissed their complaints with a smile, assuring them that there was “no problem” and promising a refund for the ill-fated trip. The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of boat tours in Thailand, particularly those operated by unregulated agencies that fail to provide proper documentation and safety assurances. Without an official receipt, tourists may have little recourse for compensation or legal action in the event of accidents. Authorities in Phuket have previously warned visitors about the risks of booking tours through unlicensed operators, urging them to verify credentials and ensure they receive official invoices or receipts before making payments. As the peak tourist season continues, this latest incident serves as a stark reminder for visitors to exercise caution when booking excursions and to prioritise safety over cost when choosing tour operators. -- 2025-01-31 -6490742102214235359.mov
