Picture from responders. A local villager searching for forest produce in a military area of Chanthaburi province was killed by a wild elephant, authorities confirmed on 1 March. The incident took place at approximately 16:00 in Phaya Kampuch village, Pong Nam Ron district. Emergency responders from the Sawang Katanyu Rescue Foundation’s Pong Nam Ron unit were alerted to the fatal encounter deep within a forested area controlled by the military. Upon receiving the report, police officers, local administrative officials, forestry personnel, marines from the 4th Marine Ranger Control Unit, and a specialist elephant response team joined forces with villagers to investigate the scene. Due to the remote location, approximately three kilometres from the nearest settlement, authorities had to proceed on foot, navigating an area known for its resident wild elephant population. After reaching the site, officials discovered the lifeless body of Mr Thongdee lying on his back in a grassy clearing. Preliminary examinations revealed severe injuries to his chest and head, consistent with an elephant attack. Rescue personnel wrapped the body in a hammock, secured it to a wooden pole, and carefully transported it out of the forest. His remains were then sent to Pong Nam Ron Hospital for an official autopsy. According to police inquiries, Mr Thongdee had gone into the forest with a friend after finishing work for the day. The pair decided to split up to cover more ground and planned to reunite at a designated meeting point. When the friend returned, he found Mr Thongdee’s lifeless body, bearing wounds from an attack by a wild elephant. Authorities have warned villagers to exercise extreme caution when entering forested areas known for elephant activity, as human-wildlife conflicts continue to be a growing concern in the region. -- 2025-03-02

Picture from responders. A police vehicle transporting two detainees was involved in a crash early morning, when the driver fainted behind the wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn. The incident occurred on Mittraphap Road, Khon Kaen Province, at 08:00 on March 1. Three people, the police officer and two detainees, were injured. The vehicle, a Honda Accord belonging to the Highway Police, was left severely damaged after the crash, with the car overturned and a front wheel detached. The vehicle collided with the road’s guardrail, causing further destruction. It then hit a streetlight, knocking it down. The debris was scattered across the road, creating a significant hazard for other drivers. Rescue teams from Non Sila Hospital quickly arrived at the scene and transported the injured to Khon Kaen Hospital for treatment. The three individuals involved in the crash were: Police Officer Piyapong Khwanmuang, who suffered minor injuries to his forehead; a male detainee named Songkran, who was also slightly injured; and a female detainee, Phimlada, who sustained more serious injuries, particularly to her chest. She remains under medical observation. According to Colonel Samnao Kruiyakhatok, the officer in charge of Non Sila Police Station, the crash occurred when Officer Khwanmuang, who was transporting the detainees from Nakhon Ratchasima to Khon Kaen, suddenly fainted while driving, losing control of the vehicle. Investigations are ongoing, and appropriate legal actions will be taken regarding the damage to government property. Local resident Kimrong, 72, who was nearby when the crash happened, described the moment of impact: “I heard a loud sound, like a tyre bursting, and turned to see the police car spinning out of control before it hit the guardrail. If the guardrail hadn’t been there, it could have been much worse.” Kimrong, along with other villagers, rushed to help. They assisted in collecting scattered car parts and helped direct traffic to prevent further accidents. Kimrong also described how he spoke with Officer Khwanmuang, who was unharmed except for a minor forehead wound. As of now, Phimlada’s condition remains under observation, while the other two individuals involved are recovering from minor injuries, after being released from hospital. -- 2025-03-02

Picture from responders. A 24-year-old bartender drowned in the Mekong River after accidentally falling from beneath a balcony while urinating. Despite efforts to swim to safety, the strong currents ultimately claimed his life. The incident occurred in the early morning of 1 March, just after sunrise, near the Viking Moo Kratha restaurant in the Tha Kwai community, Nakhon Phanom. Local residents reported seeing a young man lose his balance and fall into the river while relieving himself from under the restaurant’s balcony. Witnesses described how he initially managed to swim approximately 50 metres but was ultimately swept away by the powerful current. Authorities were alerted, and the Underwater Demolition Unit of the Mekong Riverine Patrol (NRKC) was called in to assist in the search. A rescue team of 10 divers and two patrol boats scoured the area for hours before discovering the victim’s body submerged approximately 50 metres from the fall site. The deceased was identified as Thanawit, 24, a resident of Nong Buek, Nakhon Phanom Municipality. His body was recovered by the Sawangnawa Rescue Team and transported to Nakhon Phanom Hospital for an official autopsy. Two local farmers who were watering crops along the riverbank in the morning reported witnessing the incident. They stated that they saw a young man walking down from the Viking Moo Kratha restaurant to relieve himself near the balcony supports. Moments later, he appeared to lose his footing and tumble down the steep riverbank, which drops 7–8 metres. He managed to stay afloat for a short distance before disappearing beneath the water. Thanawit’s mother, Mrs. Khan, 55, expressed disbelief at the news, stating that her son was a strong swimmer. She recounted that after finishing work at a local bar, he had gone to watch a Mor Lam concert at a nearby temple festival before heading to the restaurant with friends. Initially, she refused to believe her son had drowned, citing his experience as a former Air Force conscript in Ubon Ratchathani, where he had trained extensively. Following the autopsy, doctors confirmed that Thanawit had died from drowning. With no suspicion of foul play, the family was permitted to retrieve his body for traditional funeral rites. -- 2025-03-02

Picture from responders of the car after being recovered. A factory worker lost his life after he veered his car off the road, crashed through a barrier, and plunged into a large pond in Rayong. The crash occurred at approximately 19:00 on 1st March. Police Lieutenant Kawiwut Boonruang, an investigating officer at Mueang Rayong Police Station, received a report of a car crash on Laem Makham Road, Soi 12, in Thap Ma, Mueang Rayong District. The vehicle had lost control, crashed through a roadside barrier, and submerged in a large pond, trapping the driver inside. Emergency services, including rescue divers and medical personnel from Rayong Hospital, were dispatched to the scene. At the site, a large pond spanning over 20 rai, there were found skid marks and broken barrier posts indicated where the car had left the road before sinking. Construction workers from a nearby camp reported hearing a loud crash followed by a splash. “We rushed over and saw a white car already halfway submerged. We shouted for help, but within moments, the car disappeared completely beneath the water, leaving only air bubbles on the surface. The vehicle was about 20 metres from the shore,” one worker recounted. Rescue divers spent an hour searching before locating the vehicle and retrieving the driver’s body. The deceased was identified as a male factory worker, still wearing his company ID badge. There were no visible external injuries, and drowning was suspected as the cause of death. A crane was later used to recover the vehicle, identified as a white Honda car with registration number from Rayong. The front of the car was heavily damaged from the impact. Authorities have sent the body for autopsy and are working to contact the victim’s family for further investigation. -- 2025-03-02

UPDATE Picture captured from CCTV. A house fire in the Tha Sai district of Nonthaburi has raised serious questions after it was reported that 10 million baht in cash was destroyed in the blaze. However, new evidence, including CCTV footage, suggests that the incident may not be as straightforward as it initially appeared. After a fire broke out in the staff residence of the Royal Irrigation Department. Local residents helped contain the blaze before firefighters arrived to prevent it from spreading further. The fire, which started in a bedroom, prompted Ms. Nittaya Trisukon, 27, the wife of the son of the house’s owner, to report that a substantial sum of 10 million baht had been lost in the fire. However, during an investigation, police found 6.5 million baht in cash hidden inside a Mitsubishi Pajero, a vehicle belonging to Ms. Nittaya’s family. The money has since been confiscated for further examination. The police are questioning the claim that the full 10 million baht had been destroyed in the fire. Ms. Nittaya had stated that the money, which she claimed belonged to her employer, was withdrawn from the bank and stored in the house. The unusual circumstances surrounding the fire and the discovery of a significant amount of cash in the vehicle have led to further scrutiny of her story. As of 15:00 on March 1, forensic officers and investigators from the Rattanathibet Police Station revisited the scene to gather additional evidence. Upon arriving, they discovered that the house’s front door was locked, and attempts to contact Ms. Nittaya were unsuccessful as her phone was turned off. After cutting through the lock, the officers found a parcel addressed to Ms. Nittaya left on the doorstep. Inside the bedroom, forensic officers seized a plug and electrical cables found on the bed, which were sent for analysis. The investigation into the fire and the missing money is ongoing. In the meantime, Mr. Kaew, a 60-year-old temporary worker at the facility, expressed concerns over the fire and subsequent events. “I’ve worked here for decades, and now this investigation is questioning everyone who lives in the houses. It’s caused problems for many families, some of whom are now being asked to move out within 30 days.” Meanwhile, CCTV footage from February 23, has emerged showing Ms. Nittaya visiting a shopping mall on Chaeng Watthana Road at 14:04, accompanied by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, where she withdrew cash from the bank. This was just days before the fire that has now sparked further questions. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire, the missing money, and the unusual movements leading up to the incident. File picture for reference only. The Thai Cabinet has approved a draft amendment to the ministerial regulations governing the licensing of hazardous substances, marking a significant step towards modernising regulatory processes. The decision was announced at a press conference at Government House by Deputy Government Spokesperson Sasi Kan Watthanachanj. The amendment, proposed by the Ministry of Industry, seeks to revise the current regulations, which have been in place since 1992 under the Hazardous Substances Act. The primary objective is to streamline the application, issuance, and renewal processes for licences related to the production, import, export, and possession of hazardous materials classified as type 3 substances. A key aspect of the new regulations is the shift towards an entirely electronic system for handling hazardous substance licences. All transactions, including applications and renewals, will now be conducted digitally, aligning with the Electronic Government Act. This transition is intended to enhance efficiency, reduce bureaucratic delays, and improve accessibility for businesses and individuals dealing with hazardous materials. The move forms part of a broader regulatory reform initiative, following a Cabinet resolution from 8 September 2020. That resolution outlined the government’s commitment to simplifying legal frameworks and eliminating outdated administrative barriers that hinder progress in electronic service delivery within state agencies. The revision of the licensing process reflects the government’s recognition of the significant risks associated with type 3 hazardous substances, which require strict regulatory oversight. Producers, importers, exporters, and those in possession of such substances must register and obtain the necessary licences from the authorities. Examples of type 3 hazardous substances include: • Household insecticides containing pyrethroids • Cleaning and disinfecting agents containing acids, bases, or aldehydes These substances, while commonly used in households and industries, pose potential dangers if mishandled, necessitating rigorous control measures to ensure public safety and environmental protection. By integrating technology into regulatory processes, the amendment represents a progressive step in Thailand’s governance of hazardous materials. The shift to digital transactions is expected to reduce paperwork, speed up licensing approvals, and enhance transparency in the monitoring of hazardous substances. The move has been welcomed by industry stakeholders who have long called for a more efficient and accessible system. Businesses dealing with hazardous materials will now experience a streamlined, paperless process, aligning Thailand’s regulatory framework with international best practices. As the government continues to push for digital transformation in various sectors, this latest reform underscores its commitment to modernising regulatory practices while maintaining stringent safety standards. The amendment is set to be formally enacted following further legislative procedures and implementation planning by the relevant authorities. -- 2025-03-02

Picture from responders. A truck carrying canned fish overturned on a highway in Buriram Province on 1 March, resulting in scattered goods across the road and a large grass fire that spread rapidly. The incident occurred on Highway 24, which runs between Chok Chai and Dech Udom, near Nong Amae village in the Koke Makham Subdistrict of Prakhon Chai District, approximately 12 kilometres from the town of Prakhon Chai, heading towards Prasat District in Surin Province. Authorities from Prakhon Chai Police Station responded promptly after receiving the emergency report. According to initial investigations, the truck’s left front tyre exploded, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which then veered off the road. The vehicle, a Toyota Revo, crashed into the roadside, spilling approximately 200 packs of canned fish, weighing around 4,000 kilograms, across the area. As the vehicle veered off the road, sparks from either the damaged front wheel or the tumbling metal tins, led to a fire breaking out along the roadside, quickly spreading to the surrounding grass and rice stubble, turning into a small wildfire. Local fire services, including crews from nearby stations, and rescue units from Sawang Jariyatham and Song Mueang, arrived on the scene and worked to contain the fire, which had already spread over a wide area. The truck driver, identified as 35-year-old Sukifil, was unhurt in the incident. He explained that he had been transporting the canned fish from Samut Prakan to a client in Ubon Ratchathani. He reported that upon reaching the area, the front left tyre of the truck suddenly exploded, causing the vehicle to spin uncontrollably. Goods from the truck were sent scattering in all directions. After the truck came to a stop, he realised that he had narrowly avoided serious injury. Prakhon Chai District Chief, Mr. Damrongsak Nakheesang, along with local volunteer units, arrived to assist in managing the situation. Local villagers also helped to recover the scattered cans of fish. Authorities have urged local drivers to be extra cautious, particularly when transporting large loads, to prevent further accidents and damage. -- 2025-03-02

Picture from raid. In a significant crackdown on illicit e-cigarette distribution, police have raided on 1 March, a prominent warehouse in Bangkok, seizing goods valued at approximately 35 million baht. Acting on intelligence reports, officers obtained a search warrant from the Thonburi Criminal Court and executed the operation at a four-storey commercial building located at 88/442 Kanchanapisek Road, Bangkae district, Bangkok. The raid uncovered a vast array of e-cigarette products, including: • 343,600 bottles of e-liquid • 10,000 ready-to-use e-cigarettes The goods were stored across two levels of the building: • Ground Floor: 227,200 bottles (valued at 22.72 million baht) • Upper Floor: 116,400 bottles (valued at 11.64 million baht) A 24-year-old male suspect was apprehended at the scene. He claimed to have been hired for a one-time task involving the transportation of the products, unaware of their specific nature. This operation aligns with intensified efforts by authorities to combat the illegal e-cigarette trade, especially near educational institutions. Recent reports indicate a thriving black market for such products, with estimates suggesting an annual worth of 5 billion baht. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has mandated a comprehensive 30-day crackdown on e-cigarette sales, urging decisive action against any officials found complicit in these illegal activities. Possession, sale, or importation of e-cigarettes remains illegal in Thailand, with violators facing fines of up to 30,000 baht and potential imprisonment. The authorities continue to investigate the origins of the seized goods and are committed to dismantling the networks responsible for their distribution. -- 2025-03-02
