  2. Picture from responders. Two teenage students lost their lives in a motorcycle crash on the Ban Luang-Nan Road in Nan Province on the morning of January 15. Police and emergency services were alerted to the incident, which occurred at kilometre markers 12-13 near Huai Li and Sanian villages in Mueang District. Investigators, led by Police Lieutenant Kittipong Panyamoon of the Nan City Police Station, were dispatched to the scene alongside rescue teams and medical staff from Naresuan Hospital. At the scene, officers discovered a damaged black Honda Wave motorcycle, which had collided with the rear of a silver Chevrolet pickup truck registered in Phayao Province. Both rider and passenger, identified as Mr. Suwan, 18, and Mr. Paisarn, 18, were pronounced dead at the scene. Both were students at Nan Technical College and residents of the local area. The driver of the pickup truck, Ms. Rattikarn Inta-saen, 56, from Phayao Province, told police she had been driving relatives to Naresuan Hospital when the collision occurred. She explained that she was driving in the left lane at a moderate speed on a slight uphill curve when she suddenly heard a loud crash. Upon stopping and inspecting her vehicle, she found the motorcycle lodged into the back of her truck, with the spare tyre dislodged due to the force of the impact. Preliminary investigations suggest the motorcyclist was travelling at high speed when the collision occurred. At the time, the rising sun may have impaired visibility, preventing the motorcyclist from noticing the vehicle ahead in time to avoid the crash. Police have documented the scene and will conduct further investigations with forensic experts and medical staff from Naresuan Hospital to confirm the exact cause of the collision. The families of both victims have been notified, and arrangements are being made for the collection of the bodies. -- 2025-01-16

  4. Picture from responders. The court in Chumphon, has formally accepted charges against a 30-year-old woman, Ms Jiranthanin Tangkhaw, who was involved in a high-speed car crash that killed a mother and her two children. The horrific incident occurred on 27th November 2024 when Ms Tangkhaw’s BMW, reportedly travelling at 207 kilometres per hour, collided with a motorcycle carrying the victims as they were returning from extra classes. The victims, a mother, her son and her daughter, tragically lost their lives at the scene in Tak Daet Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chumphon. Police investigations revealed a video on the defendant’s dash-cam showing the car reaching 207 km/h. It was further alleged that, after the crash, the driver searched for her missing cat and fled the scene, surrendering to police only seven hours later. The accused faces six charges, including: • Driving without a licence. • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, resulting in fatalities. • Consuming a Class 1 narcotic (methamphetamine). • Reckless driving causing death. • Failing to stop, assist, or report the accident to authorities. Despite multiple invitations for mediation by the provincial prosecutor’s office, the defendant failed to attend. This led to the Chumphon Provincial Prosecutor filing charges in court. On the morning of 15th January, Ms Tangkhaw appeared in court for her hearing. Reports indicate that she was held in a detention cell beneath the courthouse as proceedings took place. Prosecutors presented evidence, and the court accepted the case for trial. The defendant was accompanied by her parents and a close friend, who is said to own the BMW involved in the crash. Mr Prakrit Rattanapa, 50, the victims’ husband and father, also attended the hearing. Speaking to reporters, he expressed disappointment at the lack of remorse shown by the defendant and her family. “When I saw her, she didn’t acknowledge me. Neither she nor her mother greeted me or expressed any regret for what happened. They acted as though nothing had occurred,” he said. Mr Prakrit has filed a separate civil lawsuit, seeking damages amounting to 24 million baht. He also revealed that the bodies of his wife and children are being held at the Chumphon Foundation for Charitable Relief, with funeral arrangements pending further advice from legal representatives. The car dragged the mangled motorcycle approximately 30 metres, leaving a trail of sparks. The crash was reported to Bang Nam Priao Police Station, with investigators and emergency responders quickly arriving at the scene. The damaged motorcycle, a Honda Click, was found lodged in the front bumper of the car, which had sustained damage, including a shattered windscreen and a crumpled front end. A fire broke out in a grassland near residential homes in the Khao Phet community, Sattahip, Chonburi, on the morning of January 15, after a 75-year-old woman lit a bonfire to burn waste. Strong winds quickly spread the flames, endangering the surrounding area. At approximately 08:20, Mr. Seksan Iamsuk, the village head of Sattahip Moo 3, received reports of a fire in a grass field near homes in Soi Sattahip Sukhumvit 41. Emergency services were promptly contacted, and fire engines from Sattahip Municipality and Udomsak Subdistrict Municipality were dispatched to the scene. The fire, which engulfed an area of about two rai, burned fiercely due to strong winds, causing thick black smoke to blanket the area. Concerned residents feared the flames would reach their homes. Firefighters battled the blaze for over an hour before successfully extinguishing it. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the fire had been started by Mrs. Somchit, aged 75, who admitted to burning a small pile of leaves and rubbish. She claimed she had no intention of causing such widespread damage, stating she did not anticipate the wind would carry the fire to the nearby grassland. Village head Mr. Seksan issued a strong warning to Mrs. Somchit, reminding her and the community that such actions are illegal. He highlighted the potential penalties under Thai law, which include up to three months in prison or a fine of up to 25,000 baht. If the act results in harm or damage to others, offenders could face up to seven years in prison and a fine of 140,000 baht. Authorities are urging residents to refrain from burning waste to ensure community safety and to avoid violating legal regulations. “We must work together to prevent incidents like this and maintain the safety of our community,” Mr. Seksan stated. -- 2025-01-16

  12. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. An incident occurred early morning of January 15, in Ranong, where a 24-year-old woman lost her life after jumping out of a moving vehicle during an argument with her boyfriend, a police officer. The woman's head struck the ground, causing a fatal cervical fracture. Before her death, the victim, who has been identified only as Ms. A, reportedly contacted a close friend, sharing her location and enabling the phone's speaker mode so the friend could overhear the events inside the vehicle. The phone call ended abruptly, and moments later, the friend learned of her death. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 01:30 on a road near Khlong Hat Sompaen, behind the Ranong district office. Police, forensic specialists, and medical personnel arrived at the scene to find the body of Ms. A lying lifeless on the road. She had sustained severe head and neck injuries, facial wounds, and abrasions on her arms and legs. The woman's boyfriend, Police Lance Corporal Kittiphum, 24, was present at the scene. He stood by the gate of the district office, waiting for officers to investigate. Nearby, the Isuzu pickup truck the couple had been travelling in was parked in the middle of the road. According to Lance Corporal Kittiphum's initial testimony, the couple had argued earlier in the evening over jealousy issues. To reconcile, he took Ms. A to a local entertainment venue and then decided to stop for a meal before heading back to their residence. However, the argument resumed in the vehicle. Ms. A, seated in the rear passenger seat, allegedly opened the door and jumped out of the moving truck. She struck the ground, rolled several times, and lay motionless. Investigators discovered bloodstains and signs of impact on the roadside gravel stretching approximately six metres. The truck's side step bore footprints, indicating Ms. A might have stood on it before jumping. A close friend of the deceased revealed that Ms. A had sent her location multiple times that evening, possibly seeking help. During their phone conversation, Ms. A reportedly expressed her intention to return to the police housing flat to collect her belongings and end the relationship. The friend heard commotion before the call abruptly ended. Moments later, she was informed of the tragedy. Officers from Ranong Police Station, along with forensic experts, are gathering evidence to ascertain the exact circumstances of Ms. A's death. Given the sensitive nature of the case, especially as it involves a police officer, authorities are determined to investigate any possible foul play or any potential cover-up. The deceased's body was sent to Ranong Hospital for an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death. Investigators continue to examine the vehicle and scene to determine all the facts in Ms. A's death. -- 2025-01-15

  14. Pictures from responders. A devastating fire engulfed the home of a traditional Thai musician, leaving the house in ruins and destroying valuable musical instruments worth approximately 100,000 baht. Rescue teams braved the flames to save six Persian cats, but two remain missing. The blaze was reported at 16:30 on January 14, at 3/15 Ekathotsarot Road, Soi Suphan Kanlaya 1, Nai Mueang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phitsanulok. Pol. Lt. Thanayot Ngam Banphue, duty officer at Mueang Phitsanulok Police Station, coordinated with multiple fire engines from the Phitsanulok Municipality, Hua Ro Subdistrict Municipality, and Ban Khlong Subdistrict Municipality to extinguish the fire. Due to the narrow access to the site, fire crews had to drag hoses into the area to combat the flames. The fire rapidly consumed the two-storey house, built partially of wood, and threatened to spread to a neighbouring property. After an hour-long battle, firefighters managed to bring the fire under control. Inside the house, eight Persian cats were trapped on the ground floor, frantically trying to escape the fire. Rescue workers risked their lives to save them, successfully bringing six cats to safety. One of the rescued cats sustained burns and suffered from smoke inhalation. It received first aid at the scene before being rushed to an animal hospital. Sadly, two cats remain unaccounted for. The house belonged to Mr. Surachai, known locally as “Tia,” a traditional Thai musician who lived alone with his cats. At the time of the fire, he was away at work. Neighbours alerted him after noticing the flames. Tragically, all his belongings were destroyed, including traditional Thai instruments such as a xylophone (ranad), a gong circle (khong wong), and drums, with an estimated value of 100,000 baht. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, with forensic teams working to gather evidence. -- 2025-01-15

The incident occurred on the Si Sakhon-Chanae road near Ban Air Gia Nae in Sri Banphot Subdistrict, Si Sakhon District, Narathiwat Province. At approximately 10:00 on January 14, Si Sakhon Police Station received reports of an explosion targeting a white pickup truck travelling along the road. It was later confirmed that the attack was followed by gunfire, causing the deaths of two individuals: 1. Police Lieutenant Colonel Suwit 56 – Principal of the Border Patrol Police School (BPP School) in Ban Tue Ngor, Sri Banphot Subdistrict, Narathiwat. 2. Police Senior Sergeant Major Dome 35 – Suwit’s son and also a Border Patrol officer at the same school. Initial investigations revealed that both officers had left the school in their personal pickup truck to purchase supplies in Ra-ngae District. However, en route, they were targeted by a roadside bomb planted by unknown assailants. The explosion damaged their vehicle, killing them instantly. Due to concerns about additional explosive devices, the Si Sakhon Police coordinated with the 49th Ranger Task Force to secure the area. Drones were deployed to survey the scene before officers and medical teams moved in to recover the bodies and examine the site. The tragedy has deeply affected the Ban Tue Ngor BPP School, where Suwit served as the principal, overseeing a team of 13 teachers and 120 students. Lt. Col. Suwit was a revered figure in his community. His efforts extended beyond the classroom, where he encouraged children to embrace self-sufficiency and moral values aligned with royal initiatives. In 2015, Suwit was honoured with the “Teacher of Excellence” award, highlighting his selfless contributions to the nation. His passing marks a great loss not only for his family and colleagues but also for the many lives he touched during his career. Authorities continue to investigate the attack, which underscores ongoing security challenges in the region. The Thai government has pledged to intensify efforts to ensure the safety of educators and residents in conflict-affected provinces. -- 2025-01-15

  24. Picture courtesy of Matichon A saxophonist has shared a cautionary tale after his hand was injured by a washing machine spinner, leading to the partial amputation of his finger. The incident highlights the dangers of operating household appliances without taking proper precautions. On 12 January, at approximately 20.00, 26-year-old Atthaphon Kankhuntod, a freelance saxophonist from Sung Noen, Nakhon Ratchasima, was performing household chores when he heard a loud banging noise coming from his semi-automatic washing machine. The sound, caused by clothes hitting the lid of the spin-drying drum, prompted him to intervene. Atthaphon turned off the machine and opened the lid while the drum was still spinning. Unfortunately, a bedsheet cord wrapped around his right index finger, pulling it into the drum for about five seconds. Upon freeing himself, he discovered a severe laceration and a fractured bone in his finger. He was rushed to Sung Noen Hospital and later transferred to Maharaj Hospital, where X-rays revealed tendon and nerve damage that could not be repaired. Doctors had no choice but to amputate the upper portion of his index finger. The washing machine involved had recently been repaired with a new motor, which was incompatible with its original stopping mechanism. As a result, the drum continued spinning even when the lid was opened, contrary to standard safety features. Speaking from his home, which doubles as a beauty salon, Atthaphon expressed his dismay: “As a musician, I rely on my fingers for my livelihood. I’ll need to relearn how to play with my remaining fingers. I want to urge others to ensure their appliances are functioning safely and to always wait for the drum to stop spinning before opening the lid.” -- 2025-01-15
