  1. Picture courtesy of Khaosod, dash-cam below courtesy of Phuketinsta. Phuket residents are praising a local good Samaritan who chased down a foreign motorist involved in a hit-and-run incident. The incident occurred on January 12, at 13:30 on Thepkrasattri Road, Thalang district. Dash-cam footage shared by Phuket Times captured the moment a white Hyundai Creta, cut in front of a motorbike while attempting to turn into a PT petrol station. The car collided with the motorbike, causing it to topple over. When the motorcyclist approached the car for accountability, the driver fled the scene, heading towards Thalang intersection and turning onto Don Chom Thao Road. The pursuit ended when local police from Cherng Talay Police Station intercepted the driver on Ban Don-Cherng Talay Road, where they detained him for further investigation at Thalang Police Station. The pursuit was led by Mr. Teerawut, a local motorcyclist, who witnessed the incident while riding with a friend. “I saw the car swerve and hit the bike, which was in the left lane. After the crash, I honked and called out for the car to stop, but the driver ignored me,” he explained. Deciding to take action, Teerawut and his friend chased the car for several kilometres. The driver even came close to hitting their motorcycle during the pursuit. “I knocked on the car window and shouted for him to stop, but he didn’t,” he added. The chase finally ended when the car became stuck in traffic, preventing further escape. While following the suspect, Teerawut contacted the police, who promptly arrived and arrested the driver. No details of the driver have been disclosed by authorities. After ensuring the driver was apprehended, Teerawut returned to check on the injured motorcyclist but found they had already gone to Thalang Hospital. Upon visiting the hospital, he learned the victim had either been discharged. The story quickly went viral after being posted online, with many netizens commending Teerawut’s bravery and sense of justice. Comments included: • “You’re a true hero! Wishing the motorcyclist a speedy recovery.” • “Phuket has become chaotic since the visa exemptions began. Foreign drivers need to respect our rules.” • “The authorities should crack down on reckless driving by foreigners and ensure stricter vehicle rental regulations.” -- 2025-01-13 ScreenRecording_01-13-2025 05-55-36_1.mp4

  3. Picture from responders. A 76-year-old man narrowly escaped with his life after a fire destroyed his home in Ban Pho, Suphan Buri, Thailand. The blaze, which is believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, engulfed the elevated single-storey house in the late morning of January 12. The man’s quick actions saved his 23-year-old granddaughter. At approximately 09:00, Police Lieutenant Nikhom Khunsaat of Mueang Suphan Buri Police Station received reports of a fire at a residence in Ban Pho. Firefighters from local municipal teams and neighbouring districts rushed to the scene but faced significant challenges due to strong winds. Despite their efforts, the fire consumed the house in its entirety within 40 minutes. The property, which included two bedrooms, a kitchen, a storage room, and three motorbikes, was completely destroyed. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Mr Wichian, the 76-year-old homeowner, recalled that he had been frying eggs in the kitchen when he heard a loud “pop” sound, that he initially dismissed. Moments later, he heard another explosion and turned to see flames spreading rapidly across the electrical wires inside the house. Realising the severity of the situation, Mr Wichian shouted for his granddaughter, Ms Kalyanee, who was in her bedroom, unaware of the danger. “I tried to put out the fire with a pot of water, but it was spreading too fast,” said Mr Wichian. “I told my granddaughter to call for help while I alerted the neighbours.” Ms Kalyanee, who was preparing to graduate next month, managed to drag a gas cylinder from the kitchen to safety before the fire could reach it. “If my grandfather hadn’t called out to me, I might have been trapped and killed,” she said, adding that her graduation gown, which had been custom-made, was destroyed in the blaze. Mr Wirat Khamhomkun, Mayor of Ban Pho Municipality, coordinated fire-fighting efforts and pledged immediate support for the affected family. He noted that the strong winds and the home’s ageing wooden structure contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. “We urge residents to be vigilant, especially during the dry season. Electrical appliances should be turned off, and wiring systems checked regularly to prevent similar incidents,” the mayor advised. The family will receive financial assistance from local authorities, with compensation capped at 50,000 baht. Additional essential supplies will also be provided. The house, which was 50 years old, became a death trap in a matter of minutes. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of neglected electrical systems. While the family mourns the loss of their home, they are grateful for the quick thinking that saved two lives. “We lost everything, but we still have each other,” said Mr Wichian. -- 2025-01-13

A crash occurred at around 12:30 on 12 January, when a six-wheel sugar cane truck driver veered off the road and the truck rolled onto the driver’s side, before it collided with a tree on the side of the Khu Muang-Putthaisong Road, near the Ban Pa Subdistrict in Khu Muang District, Buriram. The Buriram Rescue Centre received an emergency call reporting the crash and dispatched several rescue teams, including units with rescue and cutting tools and a recovery vehicle. Upon arrival at the scene, rescue teams found the truck lodged against a tree and the cab roof crushed, with the driver trapped inside. Emergency services immediately began using hydraulic cutting equipment to free the victim, a process that took approximately 45 minutes, due to the amount of damaged to the vehicle. At one stage a passing truck was called in to help try and pull the truck away from the tree, using chains, to allow easier access for rescue and medical teams Throughout extricating the driver from the wreck, rescue workers found him conscious and alert but suffering from abrasions and cuts across his body. Emergency medical personnel provided first aid at the scene before transporting the driver to Khu Muang Hospital for further treatment. 7. Picture from responders. A Belgian man lost his life on 12 January, while kitesurfing off Pranburi’s coastline. The victim, identified as Mr Brendan, 55, was swept onto rocks by powerful waves at Khao Kalok, located within the Thaokosa Forest Park in Pak Nam Pran, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. Local police were alerted to the incident in the evening after the kitesurfer failed to return to shore. Emergency services, including rescue volunteers and forest park officials, responded swiftly, but the challenging weather conditions, including high tides and strong waves, made the rescue operation extremely hazardous. Efforts were hampered further by the inability to locate the victim immediately. With assistance from a drone, rescuers located the victim’s body approximately 3–4 metres deep in a rocky crevice. The man, wearing an orange t-shirt and blue shorts, was found lying face down and was believed to have been in the same position for over two hours. However, rescue teams were unable to retrieve the body immediately due to rough seas and the rising tide. As night approached and the tide receded, rescuers launched a rubber boat to retrieve the body despite the high-risk conditions. Volunteers faced significant challenges, with many suffering injuries from sharp rocks and shells during the operation. Ultimately, they successfully recovered the deceased and brought him ashore. The victim’s Thai girlfriend and mother were present at the scene and were visibly distraught as they saw the lifeless body. Rescue volunteer Promsingh Singhaseni, who assisted in the operation, explained the difficulties posed by the weather. “The strong waves made it impossible to approach the area on foot. Under normal circumstances, we would use ropes to access such crevices, but today’s conditions were exceptionally dangerous.” Fellow rescuer Polarap Meesaming described the scene, saying, “The body was located on a higher rock ledge. Blood was visible running down into the sea. He had severe injuries to his head and face, likely caused by being slammed against the rocks.” Prior to the incident, Thailand’s Meteorological Department had issued warnings of heavy rain and strong winds in the Gulf of Thailand, with waves reaching 2–4 metres. Red flags were placed along the shore, prohibiting swimming and water sports. Despite these warnings, the fatal incident occurred. Authorities continue to urge the public to heed weather alerts and safety warnings to prevent further tragedies. -- 2025-01-13

The dispute escalated after a heated argument about frying eggs turned physical, culminating in Mr Sathaporn grabbing a knife and stabbing his stepfather in a fit of rage.
