Pictures and video from responders. A fire that ravaged two homes in Surin province has left an elderly couple devastated, losing over 1 million baht in cash and their entire life savings in the blaze. The fire broke out at approximately 09:35 on 21 December, at a property in Ban Sonuan, Dan Subdistrict, in the Kabcheung district of Surin. Local firefighters from several areas responded to the emergency, including teams from Dan, Kabcheung, Koktakian, and Kutan subdistricts, as well as fire trucks from the Tatum Subdistrict and the local Civil Defence volunteers. Upon arrival, firefighters found two homes engulfed in flames. The blaze, which was particularly fierce in the wooden house with a raised foundation, took more than an hour to contain. Firefighters worked to extinguish smouldering debris, especially around a large pile of hay that had caught fire. The smoke continued to billow for some time, and the local community gathered to offer their support to the homeowners. The owners, 59-year-old Yom Bunjue and 62-year-old Yee Tongmak, were overcome with grief, with both collapsing in tears and fainting at the scene. Neighbours rushed to their aid, comforting the couple as they came to terms with their loss. Preliminary investigations revealed that, in addition to household items such as appliances, furniture, and important documents, the couple’s savings—stored in multiple piggy banks were destroyed in the fire. Yom Bunjue confirmed that the couple had saved approximately 900,000 baht in cash, along with two gold necklaces weighing 2 baht, and several piggy banks filled with cash, including 1,000-baht, 500-baht, and 100-baht bills, accumulated over many years of working as farmers and rubber tappers. Unfortunately, these savings were completely incinerated. “I had been saving all my life,” said Yom, tears streaming down his face. “I stored the money in jars on the second floor of the house. I tried to get to them, but the fire spread so quickly. I was forced to escape by breaking the window and jumping down to safety, injuring my hand in the process. I have nothing left. My entire life’s work has gone up in smoke.” Yom explained that the fire started rapidly from the old house, where hay had been stored for their cattle, and he immediately realised that his life savings were at risk. As the flames spread to the second floor, he attempted to salvage his possessions, but it was too late. Yom also mentioned that he had seen children playing near the house moments before the fire broke out but did not hold them responsible. Local authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, which remains unclear at this stage. Kabcheung district officials, including the district chief and other local leaders, have pledged to assist the couple in their recovery and help them rebuild their lives. -- 2024-12-22 ScreenRecording_12-21-2024 16-47-20_1.mp4

Picture courtesy of Matichon, video from Facebook. A 28-year-old Dutch tourist was caught on video performing a reckless motorcycle stunt on Koh Samui, later admitting he was unaware of the local traffic laws. The police caught up with the tourist on the afternoon of 21 December, after a Facebook user shared a video on the “Samui People” group, highlighting the foreign motorcyclist performing a wheelie and driving dangerously on a busy road near the Big Buddha temple. The motorcyclist was seen weaving between traffic, with parked cars on both sides of the road. The stunt posed a significant safety risk to both the rider and other road users. The footage quickly garnered attention, prompting local police from Bo Phut Police Station to launch an investigation. The authorities identified the rider as Nova, a 28-year-old tourist from the Netherlands, who had been performing the stunt around 21:00 on 20 December. Nova admitted to being the rider in the video and explained that he did not realise his actions were illegal in Thailand. He stated that he was in the country to study Muay Thai and had not anticipated any issues with his behaviour. He expressed his apologies and promised not to repeat the stunt. The police issued a fine for reckless driving, amounting to 1,000 baht. Additionally, Nova was fined 2,000 baht for using a motorcycle that did not comply with Thai regulations, including an incomplete exhaust system. Authorities confiscated the non-compliant exhaust for destruction. While Nova was given a stern warning, police reminded him that any future violations would lead to more serious legal consequences, including potential court action. The incident serves as a reminder to foreign tourists to be aware of and respect local traffic laws. -- 2024-12-22 ScreenRecording_12-21-2024 17-11-08_1.mp4

Picture from responders. A man was found dead from gunshot wounds in a fruit orchard in Chanthaburi on the night of December 20. The body of 52-year-old Somjai Muktawat was discovered in the orchard after what appeared to be a hunting trip turned tragic. At approximately 20:00 Somjai, along with two colleagues, Dusit, 54, and his younger companions, 35-year-old Sumet and 30-year-old Krit, went to hunt wild animals in a forest area behind a fruit farm in the village of Khlong Narai, Chanthaburi. The incident occurred at approximately 01:05 at a condominium on Jomtien Second Road, Nong Prue, Bang Lamung District. Police were alerted to the disturbance and immediately dispatched a patrol team to investigate. Upon arrival, officers found residents in a state of shock, with security personnel detaining the intoxicated foreign man. The man, who was not immediately identified or nationality disclosed, was wearing only a black T-shirt and was naked from the waist down. Nearby, officers recovered a 15-centimetre kitchen knife, which the man had been wielding as he moved erratically through the building. Picture from responders. A warehouse under construction in Kabin Buri District, Prachinburi, collapsed during the morning of December 21, injuring multiple workers. The incident occurred at 10:30 in Moo 9, Mueang Kao Subdistrict, Kabin Buri District, Prachinburi Province. Emergency responders from the Satchaphutthatham Foundation quickly arrived at the scene. The warehouse, which was being built for a recycling business, had a steel structure over 10 metres high. Reports indicate that the structure collapsed, causing workers who were working at height to fall. Many were pinned under the heavy steel framework, crying out in pain. Rescue teams worked urgently to free those trapped. Initial reports confirmed that six workers sustained serious injuries, including broken bones, head wounds, and other lacerations. They were rushed to Kabin Buri Hospital for treatment. Witnesses stated that the workers had been welding steel beams at the top of the structure when one of the beams collapsed. This caused a chain reaction, pulling down other parts of the steel framework and resulting in the entire structure falling apart. Police from Kabin Buri Police Station are investigating the exact cause of the collapse. They will also question the contractor overseeing the project to determine whether negligence or safety violations contributed to the incident. -- 2024-12-22

Picture from responders. A high-speed chase in Chaiyaphum Province on the morning of December 21, ended in a dramatic crash involving a taxi, a six-wheel truck, and a police car, leaving multiple vehicles wrecked and several people injured. The incident began around 08:20 when officers from the Lat Yai Police Station were alerted by staff at a nearby gas station that a green-and-yellow taxi had refuelled and fled without paying a bill of 1,750 baht. Police patrol units were immediately dispatched to track the vehicle along the Lat Yai–Chaiyaphum City Road. The taxi was eventually spotted near a factory. When police attempted to question the driver, he sped off into Chaiyaphum City, prompting a pursuit. The chase ended when the taxi veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a six-wheel truck before spinning into a police vehicle. The driver of the taxi, identified as Mr. Sanya, a 36-year-old Chaiyaphum native, was taken into custody at the scene. Emergency responders administered first aid to the injured and transported them to Chaiyaphum Hospital for further treatment. The crash left significant damage to all involved vehicles. The six-wheel truck, driven by Mr. Worawit, 38, was carrying stage equipment for an event in Kud Tum, approximately 2 kilometres from the crash site. Mr. Worawit stated that the taxi crossed into his lane at high speed while being pursued by police. Despite attempting to swerve, he could not avoid the collision. During questioning, Mr. Sanya admitted that he had driven from Bangkok to pick up his mother in a nearby district. However, after a disagreement with her, he left the house and stopped at the gas station to refuel. Lacking the funds to pay, he fled the station. Fearful of being charged with thief and aware of a prior legal case against him, Mr. Sanya sped away when he noticed police following him, leading to the crash. Police later confirmed that Mr. Sanya tested negative for drugs. However, his statements during questioning were inconsistent, and investigators plan to conduct further interrogations to establish the full details of the incident. The case remains under investigation, with charges of thief, reckless driving and damage to public and private property expected to follow. -- 2024-12-22 ScreenRecording_12-21-2024 14-50-53_1.mp4

Picture and video from responders. A crash involving five vehicles occurred on Sukprayoon Road near a U-turn by a PTT petrol station in the Kut Ngong sub-district of Chonburi Province in the morning of December 21. A small truck suffered brake failure, crashing into multiple vehicles and leaving two children injured. At 10:30, police officer Pol Lt Thawatchai Laphan from the Panat Nikhom Police Station received a report of the incident. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene alongside local rescue workers. The primary vehicle involved was a white four-wheel truck, registered in Chonburi, loaded with scrap metal. Its front end was heavily damaged. The driver, Ms. Kasarin, 34, along with her two daughters, aged 10 and 8, suffered injuries after the children were thrown from the vehicle during the incident. All three were treated at Panat Nikhom Hospital. According to Ms. Kasarin, the collision occurred as she was driving her children to sell scrap metal. Upon reaching the U-turn, the truck’s brakes failed, causing it to crash into a blue six-wheel Isuzu truck waiting at the U-turn. The impact forced the truck to hit a white Isuzu pickup truck ahead of it. In a panic, Ms. Kasarin lost control of the vehicle, which then shifted into reverse on its own she claims and travelled 300 metres backward at high speed, colliding with a grey Toyota Revo pickup truck. This truck was parked outside a gatage, where it also struck another white Isuzu pickup parked inside the property. After these collisions, the truck spun back into the road, where it was sideswiped by an oncoming 18-wheel Hino trailer truck. Fortunately, no further injuries occurred, although the children were ejected from the vehicle during the chaos. Mrs. Gift, 28, the owner of one of the damaged parked vehicles, described the scene: “I was buying items nearby when I saw the truck lose control. It first hit vehicles at the U-turn, then reversed at high speed. I shouted, ‘We’re doomed!’ just before it hit my car and then another parked car.” Ms. Kasarin admitted that her truck’s insurance policy had expired, leaving her with no coverage for the damages. Police are investigating further to determine the precise cause of the incident. They plan to review CCTV footage and conduct a detailed examination of the truck. Authorities confirmed that legal action will be taken following the completion of the investigation. -- 2024-12-22 ScreenRecording_12-21-2024 13-23-26_1.mp4

Upon arrival at the scene, they found a foreign man, believed to be Norwegian and approximately 60 years old, sitting on the ground in distress. He was shirtless, wearing only denim shorts, and bleeding profusely from a deep gash on his left elbow caused by a sharp object. Municipal officer Mr. Korbsak Uisawang, stationed at the Pattaya Marine Services Centre, revealed that a group of teenagers on motorcycles had reported the incident to him, requesting assistance. Nearby residents explained through sign language that Ms. Rasmee was enraged over her husband’s alleged infidelity with another woman. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident while the injured man receives medical care. -- 2024-12-21
