  1. In a bizarre turn of events, a delivery employee at a private courier service in Nong Prue, Chonburi, reported a suspicious package believed to contain illegal drugs. However, when police arrived to investigate, they found nothing more than household items and junk inside the box, leading to considerable confusion among staff and officials alike. The incident began around 08:30 on November 4, when a private courier employee notified the Nong Prue Police Station of a suspicious package at their warehouse on Khao Noi Road. Staff had received a call from the package’s intended recipient, who made unsettling claims that it contained illegal drugs worth 4,000 baht. Concerned by the recipient’s urgency, staff reported it to authorities for investigation. When officers from the investigative and patrol divisions arrived, they were met by anxious employees outside the three-story building, which serves as a distribution hub for the area. The suspicious box, a small package wrapped in red tape labeled “Fragile”, was examined by the police, who carefully unsealed it. Inside, they found nothing incriminating: a faucet, a phone charger adapter, and a cigarette wrapper containing a resealable plastic bag. Despite a thorough search, no drugs were discovered, baffling both the police and the courier staff. One of the courier employees explained that while delivering items in the Bang Lamung and Sattahip areas, they received multiple calls from the recipient, who insisted on urgent delivery. When the employee informed them of delays, a woman claiming to be the recipient’s aunt phoned, ominously saying that the package contained drugs. The aunt alleged that her nephew had admitted to ordering drugs worth 4,000 baht. Soon after, the courier received a follow-up message reading, “Have you notified the police? If not, I will report that this courier service handles drug deliveries.” Alarmed, the employee returned the package to the warehouse and alerted the police, leading to the search and the surprising outcome. The police are now investigating the origins of the strange call and will determine whether any further action is necessary. For now, the incident remains a case of mistaken suspicions and an unusual scare for the courier service staff. Picture of the suspect package. -- 2024-11-05

  3. A monk reportedly under the influence of alcohol on November 4, drove his car into two pedestrians, injuring both, before losing control and veering into a local cassava field. The incident took place in the Nong Phrong subdistrict, Si Maha Phot district, Prachinburi. Authorities and rescue workers responded promptly to the scene. The vehicle, a bronze Toyota, showed damage to its front and was left stranded in a field. The two injured pedestrians were assisted by rescue workers and sent to the hospital. The driver, identified as Phra Samphao, displayed signs of intoxication, speaking incoherently and staggering. His robe slipped off at one point, nearly leaving him fully exposed. Inside his car, authorities found a bottle of 30-proof rice whiskey. Witnesses reported that they saw the monk’s car coming from Raboh Phai. After veering into the area, it struck a factory worker and a local resident. The monk then exited the vehicle, emitting a strong smell of alcohol and displaying behaviour characteristic of inebriation. When questioned, he claimed he was en route to Wat Khlong Yai Soi and had swerved to avoid another car, which allegedly caused him to lose control. In response to further questions, he insisted he had not been drinking but attributed his condition to chewing kratom leaves. Mr. Dam, a friend who was riding with the monk, told police that the monk had not been drinking during their travels that day but speculated he may have consumed alcohol earlier. “He’s been my friend for a long time,” Dam stated, “and drinking is a habit of his. It’s post-Buddhist Lent, so he was probably celebrating.” Local residents expressed frustration with Phra Samphao’s recurrent misconduct, revealing he has been repeatedly defrocked for drinking only to relocate to other nearby temples. Initially, police took him to Raboh Phai station for questioning. The local ecclesiastical authority have officially defrocked him again at Wat Raboh Phai following the incident. 22. A crash claimed the life of a 28 year old man early morning of November 3, after he lost control of his pickup truck, veered off the road, and struck a tree. The impact of the collision threw the driver from the vehicle, causing him to land in a nearby waterway, where he was found dead. The accident took place around 04:40 in Ban Non Sanam, Huai Kha Subdistrict, Buntharik District. Rescue teams from the Buntharik Rescue Unit were quick to respond, retrieving the driver’s body from the water channel. The man, identified only as “Suriya” (surname withheld), sustained severe injuries to his head and limbs, leading authorities to investigate whether he had died on impact or drowned after being knocked unconscious. Local law enforcement, led by Police Lieutenant Somporn Akkabut from Buntharik Police Station, reported that the driver was heading back home after visiting a female friend in a nearby village, around 30 kilometres away. Suriya’s mother, Ms. A, said she had warned her son not to return home late due to the risks of nighttime driving. However, Suriya reportedly left his friend’s home at around 04:00 shortly before the crash. The wrecked Isuzu D-Max truck, bearing Nakhon Nayok registration plates, was found crashed against a large roadside tree on the Buntharik-Huai Kha Road. The front of the vehicle was extensively damaged, with no signs of collision with another vehicle, leading investigators to suspect that driver fatigue may have been a factor. An autopsy will be conducted to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role. The victim’s mother, grief-stricken, stated, “I told him to be careful and not come home so late, especially since it’s dark and dangerous. But he didn’t listen.” Preliminary assessments from police and the Buntharik Rescue Unit indicate that Suriya may have dozed off at the wheel, resulting in this fatal crash. The authorities continue to investigate the cause, urging drivers to be mindful of their physical condition and avoid driving under fatigue. Picture from responders. -- 2024-11-04

  24. Israeli employers traveled directly to Chiang Rai to recruit Thai workers, with a huge turnout of applicants eager to prove their skills. On November 3, Thai reporters observed bustling activity at a recruitment event held at a wooden building near the entrance of Chiang Rai Rajabhat University in Muang district. Organised by Wi Dragon Co., Ltd., this recruitment drive specifically seeks skilled labour for construction jobs in Israel, including carpenters, metalworkers, plasterers, and tile installers. In a show of support, Thai comedian Klua Chernyim joined the event to encourage both the applicants and their families. Despite recent reports of the risks involved, such as the recent conflict in Israel that resulted in the deaths of four Thai workers and injuries to another, the atmosphere remained energetic, with applicants lining up for the opportunity to work abroad legally through Thailand’s Department of Labour. Clear signage outside the venue highlighted that the positions are legally sanctioned and open to men aged 25-45, with consultation services provided onsite. Mr. Marius Savescu, a senior engineer representing an Israeli employer, explained the high demand for Thai workers in Israel, where currently around 95,000 foreign labourers are employed, including 20,000 Thais. He praised Thai workers for their skill, diligence, and resilience, noting that these qualities make them particularly sought after. Israel plans to increase its intake of Thai labour, seeking an additional 3,000-4,000 workers this year and potentially up to 10,000 more in 2025. Mr. Savescu assured applicants of good working conditions, including free accommodation, healthcare, and other benefits alongside their wages. Klua Chernyim expressed his encouragement to applicants and their families, commending their enthusiasm and seeing the recruitment as a positive opportunity for skilled workers from Chiang Rai and surrounding northern provinces. He highlighted that it offers a pathway to improve their lives if they have trade skills or driving qualifications. This event marks the second time Chiang Rai has hosted an Israeli recruitment center, following a successful session on October 13, 2024, which paused recruitment upon reaching its target number of workers. Chiang Rai previously saw 2,174 locals employed in Israel in 2023. However, following the October 7, 2023, conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas, three Chiang Rai residents lost their lives, one was injured, and two were taken hostage before being safely repatriated. Since then, many Thai workers have returned to Thailand. Picture courtesy of Matichon -- 2024-11-04
