Picture courtesy of Matichon. The Ministry of Transport has agreed to reconsider its controversial ban on double-decker buses travelling along several steep mountain routes, most notably the Khao Phap Pha section of Highway 4 connecting Trang and Phatthalung. The decision follows a large-scale protest by operators and a growing backlash from local businesses and the tourism sector. On 4 June, over 100 double-decker buses assembled at the Andaman Gateway on the Trang-Phatthalung border in protest. Led by the Thai Association of Double-Decker Bus Operators (TADBO), the demonstrators submitted a formal petition to Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit, urging him to revoke a recent Department of Land Transport (DLT) directive banning such vehicles from operating on seven so-called “high-risk” routes across the country. The ban cited safety concerns, specifically prohibiting buses from travelling on roads with gradients exceeding 8% for more than five kilometres or on routes with more than five accidents per year. Khao Phap Pha was included despite, protestors claim, having no history of major accidents and only short stretches of steep incline. The DLT’s decision forced operators to divert via much longer routes through Satun or Thung Song in Nakhon Si Thammarat, increasing travel time and fuel costs. The move also sparked criticism from local business owners, including hoteliers, restaurant operators and tour agencies, who say the ban threatens to damage the region’s fragile post-pandemic tourism recovery. Protestors also called for the removal of Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote, who oversees the DLT, and announced plans to file a case with the Administrative Court. There were also calls for criminal charges under Section 157 of the Penal Code, accusing officials of malfeasance for issuing a ban they claim lacks legal basis. In response to the growing pressure, Minister Surapong chaired an urgent meeting on 5 June with representatives from TADBO. It was agreed that a new four-party fact-finding committee would be formed, comprising: 1. The Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport 2. The Deputy Director-General of the Department of Land Transport 3. The Engineering Institute of Thailand 4. The President of the Thai Association of Double-Decker Bus Operators This committee will re-inspect all seven contested routes, starting with the Khao Phap Pha section on Sunday, 8 June. According to a joint statement, if the route does not meet the criteria set out in the original directive, particularly the required 5km of continuous steep gradient or frequent accidents, the ministry will revoke the ban immediately. Regarding the other six routes, the Ministry will hold further discussions next week to determine safety upgrades or modifications needed before potentially reopening them to double-decker traffic. In light of these developments, TADBO has decided to temporarily suspend its plan to file a court case, stating: “We are giving the Ministry an opportunity to show sincerity and to correct the issue in a concrete manner. However, if the upcoming inspection of Khao Phap Pha yields no progress or clear direction, we will proceed with legal action without delay.” Related article: https://aseannow.com/topic/1362718-bus-operators-protest-ministry’s-ban-on-double-decker-coaches-along-‘risky’-routes/ Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-06-07

Picture courtesy of Komchadluek. A 65-year-old woman was killed on the afternoon of 6 June, after being struck by an 18-wheeler lorry while disembarking from a passenger vehicle on a busy road in Phan Thong District, Chonburi Province. The fatal collision occurred at approximately 13:30, on the Sukhumvit–Phan Thong Road, in front of Wat Si Pracharam in Ban Kao Subdistrict. Police Lieutenant Charuek Phothong, an investigator with Phan Thong Police Station, responded to the scene along with emergency services from Jaturatham Prateep Rescue Foundation. Authorities found the body of Mrs Ratree 65, lying beneath the rear wheels of a Hino 18-wheel articulated lorry, registered in Bangkok. She had suffered severe pelvic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle was transporting an excavator and had come to a halt in the second lane of the road. Nearby, a blue Isuzu six-wheeled passenger vehicle, operating as a local songthaew between Chonburi, Ban Kao and Phan Thong, was found parked in the far-left lane. The rear of the vehicle had sustained visible damage from the collision. Ms Noi 70, the victim’s elder sister, explained that Mrs Ratree had been out shopping in Chonburi, a monthly outing made possible by a government welfare card. She was returning home and preparing to cross the road after stepping off the songthaew when the incident occurred. Mr Boonpeng, the driver of the lorry, claimed that he had slowed down upon seeing the songthaew and applied the brakes, but failed to notice that a passenger was alighting from the vehicle. “I was only watching the truck in the adjacent lane and didn’t see the passenger vehicle properly,” he told police. Two other women sustained minor injuries during the crash and were treated at the scene before being transported to Phan Thong Hospital. Mr Samroeng 60, the songthaew driver, stated that he had slowed down and moved into the left lane to drop off passengers when the lorry crashed into the rear of his vehicle. The force of the impact reportedly threw two passengers from the vehicle, with Mrs Ratree being fatally struck and run over, after stepping off. Police have detained the lorry driver for further questioning at Phan Thong Police Station and confirmed that legal proceedings will follow in accordance with traffic laws. Mushroom Forager Stumbles Upon RPG and Landmine Near Thai-Cambodian Border Picture courtesy of Workpoint. Picture courtesy of Workpoint. A man searching for mushrooms near the Thai-Cambodian border was shocked to discover a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) and a landmine in a forested area known for leftover munitions. The incident occurred on 5 June near the Chrat Dam in Buachet district, Surin province, along the Thai-Cambodian border. The story first surfaced on a local Facebook page, “Pao Saibunterng Fanpage,” which posted a video clip of the find along with the caption: “Unbelievable mushroom hunt #PaoKitchen #SeasonalForaging.” In the video, one of the foragers is seen holding what appears to be an RPG warhead found in the underbrush. The footage has since garnered attention online due to the dangerous nature of the discovery. The man behind the post, Mr. Latsakorn, 35, later spoke to local reporters. He explained that he and a group of three to four friends had ventured into the forest near Chrat Dam to forage for wild mushrooms, a common seasonal activity in the region. “At first, we were just gathering mushrooms as usual. Then one of my friends suddenly walked up holding what looked like an RPG warhead,” Latsakorn said. “It startled me, but on closer inspection, it appeared to have already detonated or been rendered inert, so I assumed it wasn’t dangerous and filmed it.” He added that not long after the initial discovery, the group also came across what looked like a landmine positioned under a tree. Although it, too, appeared to be inactive, they did not attempt to touch or move it, opting only to record footage. Latsakorn noted that it was his first time foraging in this particular forest. He typically searches in Sangkhla district, which also borders Cambodia, but had never encountered any explosives before. “I was really shocked,” he said. “We didn’t remove the mine, we left it where we found it. I believe the locals have probably seen it before. If I ever came across one that looked active or unexploded, I’d immediately report it to the authorities.” He added that he always observes the warning signs placed by authorities in known danger zones and avoids areas marked as hazardous. The group had only entered parts of the forest designated as safe for public access. The Thai-Cambodian border region remains littered with unexploded ordnance from past conflicts, particularly landmines and RPGs from civil wars and border skirmishes. Although clearance efforts have significantly reduced the number of incidents in recent years, accidental discoveries like this still occur, highlighting the ongoing risks in these areas. Authorities have yet to confirm whether they will conduct a clearance operation in the area where the munitions were found. Adapted by Asean Now from Workpoint 2025-06-07

Picture courtesy of Khaosod A road crash in Ratchaburi Province has claimed the lives of two 18-year-old students who were travelling by motorcycle to attend classes on the morning of 6 June. The incident occurred near the horse roundabout in Ban Lueak Municipality, Photharam District, close to a petrol station. Police and emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 07:30, following reports of a serious collision between a motorcycle and a black Isuzu pickup truck. On arrival, officers from Photharam Police Station and medics from Photharam Hospital discovered the lifeless body of one male student, dressed in college uniform, lying beside a severely damaged white and red Honda Wave motorcycle. He had sustained critical head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A second student, also critically injured, was found nearby. Emergency responders administered CPR before rushing him to hospital, but despite their efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the pickup truck, 70-year-old Mr Prasit, told police he had been exiting a side road after filling a gas canister. As he slowed down to yield to traffic at the roundabout, the motorcycle reportedly collided with the front of his vehicle at high speed. Friends of the deceased, who were riding ahead of them in a convoy of motorcycles from their homes in Taopoon Subdistrict, said they became concerned when the two failed to arrive at school and could not be reached by phone. After retracing their route, they arrived at the scene of the crash, where they were devastated to find their friends. The police have launched a full investigation into the crash and are reviewing statements and evidence to determine the cause. The bodies of the victims have been taken to hospital for post-mortem examination and arrangements are being made to return them to their families for religious rites. Elderly Father 82, Shoots Drug-Addicted Son Dead After Years of Abuse Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. An 82-year-old man in Kanchanaburi has confessed to shooting his drug-addicted son dead in what police are describing as a culmination of years of domestic abuse and torment. The body of Mr Arthit, was discovered inside a small hut in Nong Krang Subdistrict, Bo Phloi District, Kanchanaburi Province. He had been shot twice, once near the left eye and once in the chest. There were no signs of a struggle, prompting immediate suspicion of a targeted attack. Police from Nong Ri Police Station conducted overnight interviews with the victim’s family members and neighbours. On the morning of 6 June, the victim’s father, Mr Chan, turned himself in and admitted to being the gunman. Mr Chan told police that his son, the youngest of seven children from two marriages, had become a long-term drug user. According to his account, Arthit refused to work, frequently begged for food and money from relatives and had a history of violent outbursts when denied cash to purchase drugs. Mr Chan claimed that he had been physically assaulted by his son on numerous occasions. “I couldn’t take it any longer,” he reportedly told police. “He would hit me when I didn’t give him money. I feared for my safety.” According to the confession, Mr Chan waited until his son was asleep in a small hut located about 20 metres from the family home. He then approached quietly with a firearm and shot him at close range before disposing of the weapon in nearby woodland and returning home as if nothing had happened. The murder was only discovered when locals found the body and alerted authorities. During a police reconstruction of the crime, Mr Chan expressed remorse. “I am sorry for what I did,” he said, “but I couldn’t live in fear any longer. I accept whatever punishment comes.” Police have since charged Mr Chan with murder and violations of the Firearms Act. He is being held at Nong Ri Police Station pending further legal proceedings. Police were alerted to the incident at approximately 05:30, near the Apollo three-way junction in Bang Pla Soi subdistrict, heading towards Pattaya. Officers from Mueang Chonburi Police Station, along with medical personnel from Chonburi Hospital and rescue workers from the Tri Khunatham Foundation, responded to the scene. The deceased was identified as Mr. Sanga 67, a former teacher who had retired from government service. He was found lying motionless on the road with a deep wound to his right forehead and visible tyre marks across his chest. A white Isuzu D-Max pickup truck, registered in Chonburi, was found at the scene with significant front-end damage. The truck was loaded with food products in its cargo bed. The driver, Mr. Wiroj 60, remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Mr. Wiroj told officers that he was returning to Bang Phra after shopping at a local market. He claimed the victim had been walking with his head down, attempting to cross the road without checking for oncoming traffic. According to the driver, he was familiar with the man and had seen him cross the road many times before in a similar manner. “I’ve driven this route for 7–8 years and seen him almost every day. Other vehicles have nearly hit him before. I tried to be cautious, but I couldn’t brake in time,” Mr. Wiroj said. Police noted skid marks on the road as well as the victim’s footwear, which had been left behind at the point of impact. Mr. Wiroj was taken to Mueang Chonburi Police Station for formal questioning. He is expected to be charged with reckless driving causing death, pending the outcome of the investigation. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-06-07

Personal Trainer Found Dead in Car: Family Blames Ex-Partner in ฿2 Million Fraud Case Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A 34-year-old personal trainer was found dead in a car in Nakhon Sawan in what is believed to be a case of suicide linked to severe depression and a financial dispute with a former partner. Police and emergency services were called to the roadside near the Sky Garden Market on the Suphai–Sankhu Road in Nakhon Sawan Tok Subdistrict. Officers from Mueang Nakhon Sawan Police Station, along with rescue workers and a medical examiner from Sawanpracharak Hospital, discovered a white Honda City, parked with all windows tightly shut and the engine turned off. Inside, they found the lifeless body of Mr. Thawatchai, also known as Bird, lying in the driver’s seat. His body was discoloured and showed signs consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning. A charcoal stove, still emitting residual heat, was discovered in the front passenger footwell, suggesting he had used it to asphyxiate himself. His sister, Ms. Nuengruthai, tearfully informed investigators that her brother had been battling depression since the death of their mother and had attempted suicide on three previous occasions, all of which she had managed to prevent. He had been living with her and borrowed her car the night before, saying he was going to do laundry. When both he and the car were missing the following morning, she sensed something was wrong and began a frantic search, eventually finding the car parked at the scene. Ms. Nuengruthai added that in addition to his depression, her brother had been under immense stress due to a financial betrayal by a former boyfriend, who allegedly swindled him out of more than 2 million baht. Despite repeated efforts to recover the money, Mr. Thawatchai was met with indifference, which further contributed to his mental decline. Police have taken Ms. Nuengruthai in for further questioning and have sent the body for a full autopsy at Sawanpracharak Hospital. The remains will be returned to the family for religious rites once the post-mortem is completed. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Two men were killed and three others injured in a horrific early-morning crash after their car flipped over a central reservation on Chalong Krung Road in Bangkok’s Lat Krabang district. The crash occurred around 03:00 on 6 June, near the overpass above the motorway in the Lam Pla Thio subdistrict. Police and rescue workers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation rushed to the scene following reports of a serious crash involving a private vehicle. Emergency responders found a white Honda Freed, registration number from Bangkok, overturned and heavily damaged on its side in the leftmost lane of the two-lane road. One victim was found dead at the scene, crushed beneath the wreckage, while another was critically injured and later died despite emergency resuscitation efforts. The deceased were identified as Mr. Sirawit, 23 and Mr. Thanaphat, 22. Their bodies were transported to the Police General Hospital’s Institute of Forensic Medicine for post-mortem examination. Three others sustained injuries including abrasions and suspected arm fractures. They were treated at the scene and then transported to Chularat 9 Hospital. The injured survivors were named as Mr. Sitthaphat, 22, Mr. Kittichai, 23, and Mr. Natthanan, 22. According to preliminary statements from the injured passengers, the group of five friends had been out drinking at a bar earlier that night. On their way home to Min Buri, while descending the motorway overpass, the vehicle encountered a flooded stretch of Chalong Krung Road. The slippery surface caused the driver to lose control. The car veered into the central reservation, vaulted across two lanes of opposing traffic and overturned. Police are currently waiting for the three injured survivors to recover sufficiently before questioning them further to determine who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. Legal proceedings will follow in accordance with the findings. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-06-07

Search Underway for Missing 74-Year-Old Man with Diabetes Who Disappeared Picture courtesy of Workpoint. Picture courtesy of Workpoint. A 74-year-old man suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure has been missing for two days after venturing alone into the forested hills near his home to gather wood for making tool handles. Mr Chit, a resident of Ban Nong Pao Pi village in Sam Roi Yot district, Prachuap Khiri Khan, left home on the morning of 4 June to climb Huai Ta Chit Hill in Kui Buri National Park. He had reportedly gone to cut maha phrom wood, which he regularly uses to craft hoe handles for sale. According to his family, he usually returns home by evening, but on this occasion, he failed to do so. The disappearance triggered a large-scale search involving over 50 individuals, including park rangers, local officials, police officers from Sam Roi Yot Police Station, village leaders, volunteers, rescue personnel from Sawang Methee Thammasathan Foundation, and concerned villagers. The initial search found a cloth shoulder bag belonging to Mr Chit on the ground. Inside were food items including rice, bottled water, bread and snacks. Fearing he might return to the location, the bag was left untouched. Search teams then swept the surrounding area for several hours but were unable to locate him and had to call off efforts temporarily due to nightfall. The following day, the teams regrouped with fresh supplies and expanded their search radius from the spot where the bag was found. Despite nearly eight hours of continued searching, there was still no sign of the missing man. Authorities have since divided the operation into three separate teams to cover more ground and have appealed for additional support from other agencies. Mr Chit’s daughter, Ms Walaya, told reporters that her father had gone to collect wood as usual, but this time did not return. “We’ve searched for two days and still haven’t found him,” she said. “His saw and knife are also missing, so we think he took them with him.” She added that her father suffers from both diabetes and hypertension. His diabetes requires insulin injections administered to the abdomen rather than oral medication. “We are worried that he may have suffered a medical episode and is now unable to move or call for help,” she said tearfully. “Whatever has happened, we just want to find him, we’re praying that he is safe.” Authorities and local volunteers have pledged to continue search efforts until Mr Chit is found. Man Arrested for Aiding Call Centre Scam That Duped Woman into Transferring 3 Million Baht Picture courtesy of Matichon. Picture courtesy of Matichon. A 48-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a sophisticated call centre scam in which a woman was deceived into undressing on a video call and ultimately transferring over 3 million baht to a criminal gang posing as law enforcement. Pol Maj Gen Witiya Sriprasertphap, commander of the Crime Suppression Division (CSD), ordered the arrest of Mr. Alongkorn, who was detained in Soi Wat Phikun Ngoen, Bang Muang subdistrict, Bang Yai district, Nonthaburi province. The arrest followed a warrant issued by the Nonthaburi Provincial Court on 27 May 2025, charging him with fraud by impersonation, inputting false information into a computer system and allowing his bank account to be used in the commission of a crime. According to investigators, the victim initially received a phone call from individuals claiming to be officers from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI). The scammers accused her of involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering, warning that non-cooperation would result in prosecution. To gain her trust, the suspects sent what appeared to be official documents via a messaging app and instructed her to isolate herself in a hotel room for a “confidential investigation.” During a subsequent video call, the scammers alleged that the victim had engaged in sexual activity with a drug suspect and insisted she remove her clothing to allow a visual search for identifying marks, claiming it was part of the investigative process. The suspects then requested access to her financial records and instructed her to transfer money to various bank accounts for “verification.” Over time, the victim complied with 18 transfers to 14 different accounts, totalling 3.2 million baht. Investigators later traced one of the accounts to Mr. Alongkorn, who admitted during questioning that he had opened the account at the request of a friend, allegedly for a commission of 9,000 baht. He claimed he was unaware that it would be used for criminal purposes. Following the victim’s realisation that she had been scammed, she reported the incident to police, leading to a full investigation and the eventual arrest of Mr. Alongkorn. He has been transferred to Mueang Nonthaburi Police Station to face further legal proceedings. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-06-07

Man Killed After NGV Crashes Into Road Sign and Erupts into Flames Picture courtesy of Matichon. Picture courtesy of Matichon. A man died in a fiery crash in the early hours of the morning of 6 June, after his CNG powered car collided with a road sign and exploded, trapping him inside as the vehicle was engulfed in flames. The incident occurred at approximately 03:10 near Ban Nong Nam Thip, about 600 metres from the Phahonyothin Road junction in Ban Mi district, Lopburi province. Police Lieutenant Chatree Sappayniyompong, deputy investigator at Mueang Lopburi Police Station and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, responded to the scene. Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered a car ablaze at the base of a roadside directional sign. Firefighters from the Khao Phrangam Subdistrict Municipality were quickly deployed and managed to extinguish the flames after a fierce blaze. Once the fire was under control, investigators inspected the burnt-out wreckage, which had been destroyed beyond recognition. Although the make and model were not immediately identifiable, it is believed to have been a BMW sedan. A scorched licence plate bearing only the numbers “8596” was recovered. The charred body of a man was found in the driver’s seat, burned beyond identification. No documentation or personal effects were found due to the intensity of the fire. Ms. Kanueng Ketbunjong, 54, who was staying overnight at a nearby farm, witnessed the horrifying sequence of events. She reported seeing the car travelling along Phahonyothin Road before making a sudden U-turn and accelerating loudly. “The car spun once, then crossed over to the opposite lane, revved the engine and crashed straight into the signpost,” she said. Moments later, the rear of the vehicle exploded into flames. Her husband attempted to douse the fire with an extinguisher but was unsuccessful and further explosions followed as the fire spread rapidly throughout the vehicle. Ms. Kanueng also noted that the road is a known hotspot for illegal street racing among local youths, with motorbikes and pickup trucks frequently using the stretch for high-speed contests. At the crash site, police discovered the vehicle’s rear window had been blown clear of the car and landed nearby. Investigators also found a gas tank installed in the car’s boot, along with several picnic-style butane canisters, suggesting that flammable materials may have intensified the blaze. Authorities have sent the body to Ananda Mahidol Hospital for forensic examination and are continuing their investigation to identify the victim and determine the exact cause of the incident. Wall Collapse at Pattaya Construction Site Leaves Four Workers Seriously Injured Picture courtesy of Amarin. Picture courtesy of Amarin. Four construction workers sustained serious injuries after a concrete wall collapsed onto them during a pile-driving operation at a large furniture store construction site near the railway road in the Soi Khao Talo area. The incident occurred at approximately 13:00 on 5 June. Emergency services from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Centre in Pattaya were swiftly dispatched to the scene following reports of a wall collapse with multiple casualties. Upon arrival, rescue workers discovered that a boundary wall belonging to a nearby residential property had caved in, falling into a 4-metre-deep foundation pit where workers were engaged in piling work. The collapse trapped four workers beneath heavy concrete debris. The injured include two Thai nationals and two Cambodian nationals, all of whom suffered severe injuries from the impact of falling rubble. Rescue personnel administered emergency first aid before rushing the victims to a nearby hospital. Mr Jesada, a fellow construction worker present at the site, recounted the terrifying moment. “The men were working in the pit while I was above ground. Suddenly, there was a loud crash like something heavy had fallen. When I looked down, I saw the wall had collapsed into the hole.” His account was corroborated by Mr Nirun, a backhoe operator working nearby. He explained, “I was digging near the pit when I heard the crash. I turned to see the wall had come down, burying the workers. I jumped in to help try to pull them out and called for more help immediately.” Preliminary investigations suggest that the collapse was caused by ground subsidence due to deep excavation work adjacent to the boundary wall. The site had no visible retaining structures to support the soil, which may have led to the earth shifting and pulling the wall down with it. Local civil engineering officers and Bang Lamung district officials have temporarily halted all construction activities at the site. An investigation has been launched.
