  2. Netizens are voicing their confusion and frustration after a U-turn traffic sign was found mounted unusually high on a light pole, leaving drivers unable to see it. A local rescue worker revealed that many people don't even realise it's a U-turn spot, resulting in frequent accidents. The incident came to light after a Facebook user named "Na Kon Rescue" posted a video showing the blue U-turn sign, which was mounted on a streetlight near Chana Anusorn School in Ban Suan Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chonburi. The post quickly went viral, with many commenting on the sign’s impractical placement and questioning why it was installed so high. A reporter visited the location, confirming that the sign was mounted approximately three metres above the ground. The sign’s height makes it nearly impossible for drivers to notice while traveling at regular speeds, especially in an area where U-turns are frequent and traffic is heavy. Mr. Mana, a rescue worker from Chonburi’s Mangkon Rescue Unit (Rescue Unit 18), explained that the high placement of the sign has been a source of confusion for road users. "Drivers cannot see or read the sign indicating that this is a U-turn area, and I don't understand why it was placed so high. I urge the relevant authorities to address this issue and reposition the sign at eye level. This area has seen frequent accidents due to fast-moving vehicles and the inability of drivers to anticipate U-turning cars," he said. Locals are hoping that authorities will take action soon to prevent further accidents and ensure road safety in the area. -- 2024-09-22

In a shocking escalation of violence in the southern province of Narathiwat, over 10 armed assailants stormed the Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary, taking 10 forest officials hostage and tying them up before setting fire to four staff residences. The group made off with 10 shotguns before fleeing into the nearby forest. The incident took place at approximately 20:30 on September 21, in Bala Village, Moo 5, Lo Chut Subdistrict, Waeng District. Armed with firearms, the attackers overpowered the forest sanctuary staff, restraining them by tying their hands and feet. After looting 10 shotguns, the assailants set fire to four residences belonging to the staff, completely destroying them. The 10 forest officials, after managing to free themselves from their restraints, quickly contacted local authorities, including the police from the Buketa Police Station, military forces, and civil defense units. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the flames, while security forces have cordoned off the area for further investigation, scheduled to begin early morning. In response, Police Major General Maitree Santayakul, Commander of Narathiwat Provincial Police, has issued an urgent alert to all police stations across the province’s 13 districts. He has called for collaboration between police, military, and civil authorities to remain on high alert, fearing that this attack may be part of a coordinated effort targeting forest units in the region. 6. Picture from responders Pattaya police are investigating after a local fisherman discovered the body of a young woman submerged in a fenced-off pond. The victim, wearing a black t-shirt and cream-colored trousers, is believed to have been dead for at least 10 hours before being found. The discovery took place on September 21, at 22:05 in a pond located near Soi Chaiyaphruek 1, Subsoi 3, Nong Prue Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi. Deputy Inspector Lt. Col. Chonlawit Athipansri of Pattaya City Police Station was informed of the situation and immediately dispatched a team to the scene, along with officers from the Pattaya Tourist Police, led by Pol. Lt. Col. Supharat Meepricha, and the Sawang Boriboon Rescue Foundation. At the site, officers found a well-secured pond, surrounded by barbed wire, with a pair of sandals placed near the water’s edge. Inside the approximately one metre deep pond, the body of a woman, around 165 cm tall, was discovered. Authorities estimate she had been dead for more than 10 hours, with no visible signs of injury. Mr. Tawee, a 45-year-old local fisherman, was the one who made the chilling discovery. He recounted that while setting a fish trap, he noticed the sandals by the water but didn’t think much of it at first. However, when he dipped his leg into the water, he noticed human hair and a head. Initially in disbelief, he inspected more closely and confirmed it was a body. Horrified, he immediately left the water and called the police. The body has been sent to the Police General Hospital's forensic department for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities are working to identify the victim as part of the ongoing investigation. -- 2024-09-22

  8. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. In a heart-wrenching plea for assistance, 68-year-old Sewiad Duangnil and her 14-year-old granddaughter, from Buriram, have reached out to government agencies for help in returning the ashes of Sewiad's daughter, 43-year-old Pawinee Duangnil, who died unexpectedly in Russia nearly two months ago. Pawinee, a licensed Thai massage therapist, had traveled to Russia in October 2022 to earn a better living for her family. Tragically, she was found dead in her apartment on July 31, 2024, with initial reports suggesting she may have succumbed to exhaustion from long hours of work. The family is devastated, having lost their primary breadwinner and now facing the added burden of not being able to return her remains for a proper religious ceremony. Despite reaching out for help, they have received little guidance on how to proceed. Local labour volunteers have only been able to file requests with provincial labour offices, but progress has been slow. Authorities have informed the family that they must wait for the employer in Russia to handle the cremation and send the ashes back before they can obtain a death certificate and access other benefits. Although Pawinee's eldest daughter has sent a request for the cremation to proceed, almost two months have passed without any updates. Sewiad revealed that her daughter intended to return home in October 2024 after nearly three years abroad, hoping to provide for her elderly parents and support her two children’s education. Just five days before her untimely death, they spoke about her plans to renovate their home with her savings. The grieving family is now calling for immediate government intervention to help expedite the return of Pawinee's ashes and provide any available welfare assistance. “We have no one to turn to,” Sewiad lamented. “We just want to bring her home for the final rites.” The local labour volunteer, Paisarn Sutla, echoed the family's plight, emphasising the emotional and financial toll this loss has taken on them. Without their main supporter, the family is struggling to cover living expenses and educational costs for the grandchildren. As the family continues to wait in anguish, they appeal to the authorities to take swift action to resolve this painful situation. -- 2024-09-22

An incident occurred on September 19, when a father tragically drowned while fishing with his family at the Mae Lang overflow weir in Ban Rai, Sop Pong, Pang Ma Pha District. The 42-year-old man, identified only as Jai, fell into the water while attempting to retrieve a fishing line, disappearing before the eyes of his wife and four-year-old son. According to local officials, the family had gone fishing together when the accident happened around 13:20. Witnesses reported that Jai surfaced twice, struggling to stay afloat, before succumbing to the waters. His wife, 27-year-old Pla, immediately sought help from villagers upon witnessing the event. Rescue efforts began promptly, coordinated by Phonthep Jaroensuksakul, director of the Conservation Management Office, with support from local authorities, police, and volunteer rescue teams. On the first day, search efforts were hampered by difficult conditions, as the weir's concrete surfaces were slick with algae. The victim, 43-year-old Mr. Sitthikorn, was targeted while parked in his BMW X3 outside his home in Trang province. According to reports, the assailant approached on a motorcycle disguised as a food delivery rider, complete with a raincoat and a food delivery bag. A shooting incident occurred in Khon Kaen on September 20, leaving four people dead, including a grandmother, a mother, and a family member, while a two-year-old girl miraculously survived. According to local authorities, the shooter, 40-year-old Nopadol Antaksa, targeted his ex-wife, 28-year-old Khlita “Mew” Phaengrit, in a fit of jealousy after learning she had started a new relationship. Witnesses reported that the event unfolded as Nopadol attempted to reconcile with Mew but was unsuccessful. The incident took place at a residence in Ban Kham Pom, where the family had gathered. Upon arrival, police discovered the lifeless bodies of Mew found dead next to the bed with two gunshot wounds to the head . Her mother, Mrs. Charuayphon, age 50, shot twice in the torso, lying dead on the bed. Another victim, 18-year-old Phonpiphat “Best” Thongyoth, was found deceased in the bathroom shoot twice in the head. The shooter then turned the gun on himself and was found shot in the mouth, lying dead on the bed. Remarkably, Mew's daughter, aged 2, who was present during the shooting, survived the ordeal and was found sitting beside her mother, visibly shaken but unharmed. Local authorities took the child into their care for her safety. Nopadol's motive appears to stem from deep-seated jealousy and domestic violence issues, as family members revealed that Mew had previously endured abuse from him. She had left him several times over the past few years but had recently returned to her family’s home after expressing her intent to end the relationship for good. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots around 20:00 initially not realising the severity of the situation until they saw the aftermath. Neighbours described the sound of gunfire as sporadic, which raised concerns but did not immediately alert them to a life-threatening situation. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including Nopadol's mental state leading up to the attack. -- 2024-09-22

  24. Picture from responders. The body of a man was found with his throat slit in an apartment in Chonburi province. The scene appeared to have been staged to resemble a suicide, with the body laid on the bed as though the victim had taken his own life. A knife was found at the scene. At 09:30 on September 21, Lt. Col. Natchapon Saengsi, deputy investigative inspector of Najomtien Police Station in Sattahip District, Chonburi, responded to a report of a murder at a public housing project, building 61, in Najomtien. The investigation was led by Police Colonel Watchanchai Saengrith, Superintendent of Najomtien Police Station, with forensic experts from Chonburi's Forensic Science Centre and rescue workers from Sawang Rojanathammasathan Foundation. Upon arriving at the scene, police found a large pool of blood in the living room, along with a sharp kitchen knife in the blood. There were signs that the body had been dragged into the bedroom. The deceased, identified as 24-year-old Mr. Anucha, was found lying on his side on the bed, resembling a sleeping position, but with a deep cut across his throat. In the kitchen, traces of blood were discovered, though they had been partially washed away. Authorities suspect the perpetrator may have fled through the back of the room. There were no signs of struggle in the apartment, raising further suspicions. Neighbours reported noticing a strong smell of blood around 22:00 the previous night (September 20), but did not act until the next morning, when the odour intensified. They alerted a security guard, who checked the apartment through a window and saw the blood, prompting a call to the police. Mr. Wichai, 60, the father of the victim, arrived at the scene in deep grief. He stated that his son was quiet and kept to himself, having only one close friend who he described as a tall, fair-skinned man serving in the military. The father noted that this friend had visited his son's apartment but was unable to provide further details. Police, together with forensic experts, collected all evidence from the apartment. Initial investigations suggest the case was probably not suicide, as it was just staged to appear as such. Officers are currently reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas and questioning the victim’s friends and acquaintances. The body has been sent to the Forensic Institute at the Police General Hospital in Bangkok for a detailed autopsy. Investigators are withholding further details until they receive the autopsy results and gather more evidence to proceed with legal action. -- 2024-09-22
