Pictures from responders. A fire broke out at 04.35, on September 18, at a two storey house in Soi Sukhumvit 29, Sattahip, opposite Makro.Three fire engines from Khet Udomsak, two fire engines from Sattahip Municipality, and the Sawang Rojanatham Sathan Sattahip rescue team attended the incident. The homeowner, Mr. Napharat Narongthammachot 30 years old, reported waking and was immediately aware of a strong smell of smoke and, upon investigating further, saw flames rapidly spreading through the house. With no time to spare, he quickly evacuated and alerted neighbours for help. By the time firefighters arrived, in approximately 5 minutes, the house was fully alight and the priority was to stop the fire spreading in the closely packed neighbourhood on a narrow street. It took emergency responders 90 minutes to extinguish the fire, but the house and contents were fully destroyed. Picture from responders. An elderly man who had been missing for 14 days was found dead by a stream in Trang Province, leaving his son suspicious about the cause of death. On September 17, at 08:30, Pol. Lt. Kittipoom Hookhiew, an investigator from Nong Ueang Police Station, received a report of a decomposed body found by the Din Dam stream in Village 6, Thung Na, Palian District, Trang Province. Police officers, forensic teams, doctors from Palian Hospital, and volunteers from the Trang Sawang Phakdee Foundation arrived at the scene. The body was found under a bamboo tree in a rubber plantation, approximately 300 metre from the main road. The decomposed state of the body appeared to have been gnawed by animals. The victim was later identified as 75-year-old Mr. Bang (alias), a Trang resident. His family had reported him missing at Nong Ueang Police Station after he disappeared from his home on September 3, a total of 14 days before the discovery. At the scene, a sarong and the deceased's clothing were found near the body, along with an old nylon rope used for tying cattle. A blue Honda Wave 100 motorcycle without a license plate was found parked in nearby bushes. Under the seat, officers discovered 708 baht in cash. The body was sent to Songklanagarind Hospital in Songkhla for an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death. Reporters visited the victim's family home, where preparations were underway for an Islamic funeral. The victim’s daughter-in-law, Mrs. Bee (alias), 47, explained that on the afternoon of September 3, the victim was last seen riding his motorcycle to a lawyer’s house to drink beer. He was not seen again until his body was discovered 14 days later by a local boy who found the motorcycle while looking for frogs. He informed the village headman, who then discovered the body nearby. The victim’s son expressed his sorrow and raised suspicions about his father’s death. He questioned why only a small amount of money was found with his father, especially since he had recently sold cattle for over 30,000 baht. Additionally, the victim was known to always carry cash and had recently mentioned winning money from gambling. The son expressed a deep desire for justice, stating that he would not rest until the truth behind his father's death was uncovered. Investigators revealed that the victim had sold cattle for about 30,000 baht two months before his disappearance and had become involved with a 30 year old karaoke bar girl in the area. After the autopsy results are out, the officers will invite her in for questioning. -- 2024-09-18

Picture from responders. A roadside bomb on September 17, targeted a paramilitary patrol from the 33rd Ranger Regiment in Bannang Sata District, Yala Province, injuring four soldiers. The explosive device, weighing over 50 kilograms, was buried along a rural road in Bajoh Village, Moo 2, Thung Luang Subdistrict. The blast sent an armored pickup truck flying into a nearby fruit orchard, leaving it severely damaged. The attack occurred around 10:00, prompting an immediate response from local authorities, including Pol. Lt. Col. Suriya Kuadam of Bannang Sata Police Station, and joint forces from police, military, and administrative units. Upon arrival at the scene, they found the destroyed Isuzu armored pickup belonging to the ranger unit. The injured soldiers were identified as Veerasak Buamuangkao, 31; Pracha Boonduang, 25; Woradet Sommuang, 34; and Tanisorn Malai, 33. All sustained internal chest injuries from the blast and were rushed to Bannang Sata Hospital for treatment by passing civilians who witnessed the incident. Further investigation of the blast site revealed a large crater approximately 2x1.5 metres wide, along with debris from the bomb, including electronic parts, shrapnel, wires, and pieces of a gas cylinder used in the explosive device. It is believed that the bomb was triggered remotely as the ranger unit's patrol passed by. According to preliminary findings, the paramilitary unit was conducting a routine patrol as part of a security plan when the insurgents, who had been hiding in the nearby brush, detonated the bomb. The blast flipped the armored vehicle, causing the soldiers' injuries. Officials are continuing to investigate the incident and are increasing patrols in the area to prevent further attacks. -- 2024-09-18

Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Authorities have arrested a notorious human trafficker, known as "Jae Ja Paknam," in Samut Prakan, who was involved in a brutal human trafficking operation that forced victims into slave labour aboard fishing vessels. Those who resisted were thrown into the sea, with one survivor miraculously rescued after drifting for three days. On September 17, Pol. Maj. Gen. Sarut Khwaengsopha, Chief of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD), ordered the arrest of 62-year-old Sompong (last name withheld), also known as "Jae Ja." The arrest warrant, issued by the Criminal Court in 2014, charged her with several offenses, including human trafficking, unlawful detention, and forcing individuals into slavery. The arrest took place at Wat Phothiyaram (Thong Khong) in Samut Prakan Province. The case first came to light in 2012 when the ATPD received a report from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security. The victim had been lured by labour brokers with promises of high-paying work on a fishing boat. Upon arriving in Samut Prakan, they were taken to Sompong’s karaoke bar, coerced into signing a slave labour contract, and confined to a room under threats of violence. Victims were then sent to various fishing boats, eventually being trafficked onto vessels in Malaysian waters. Many were forced to endure grueling working conditions and violent abuse. One victim, after resisting, was thrown into the sea, where they drifted for three days before being rescued by a passing Vietnamese cargo ship and returned to Thailand. Following the initial report, investigators gathered evidence to secure arrest warrants for five individuals involved in the operation. Several accomplices have already been arrested, but Sompong managed to evade capture for over a decade. After re-examining the testimonies of previously arrested suspects, investigators confirmed Sompong’s identity, leading to her capture. During questioning, Sompong admitted to her involvement in trafficking both Thai nationals and migrant workers onto fishing boats, where they were subjected to slave labour. She also revealed that she had been convicted of human trafficking in Samut Prakan previously and had served a three-year prison sentence. Sompong is now in custody and faces further prosecution by the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division. Authorities continue their efforts to dismantle human trafficking networks in the region. -- 2024-09-18

Oil Transport Ship Stranded off Koh Mai Si Due to Engine Failure, Crew of 12 Safe A ship transporting oil experienced engine failure and was swept ashore by strong waves, becoming stranded on rocks behind Koh Mai Si in Koh Kut District, Trat Province. Picture courtesy of response boats. A ship transporting oil experienced engine failure and was swept ashore by strong waves, becoming stranded on rocks behind Koh Mai Si in Koh Kut District, Trat Province. The incident occurred on the morning of September 17, but fortunately, all 12 crew members on board were unharmed. At approximately 08:00, Phairat Soisaeng, the district chief of Koh Kut, received a report about the tanker, identified as the Thai Laemthong 8, which had run aground on rocks near the back of Koh Mai Si, opposite the Soneva Kiri Resort. The ship, which had been en route from Cambodian waters to Rayong Province, encountered rough seas overnight and made an emergency stop between Koh Mai Si and Koh Kut to shelter from the storm. However, early that morning, severe weather caused the engine to fail, leaving the vessel vulnerable to the strong waves. The waves pushed the ship onto the rocks, damaging the ship's hull and allowing water to seep in. The crew immediately worked to pump water out of the ship to prevent it from sinking. Local officials, including police from the Koh Kut Police Station and officers from the Koh Kut Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, were dispatched to the scene in a small speedboat to assess the situation. Due to rough seas, they were unable to reach the ship directly, but confirmed that there were no injuries among the crew. There have been no reports of oil leakage into the sea. Dechathorn Chanob, the mayor of Koh Kut Subdistrict, explained that efforts were underway to free the ship from the rocks. Two large fishing vessels and a ship from the Royal Thai Navy's 1st Fleet were called in to assist. However, due to the heavy weight of the tanker and the continued rough sea conditions, the operation to tow the ship back to open waters was unsuccessful. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any environmental damage and ensure the safety of the crew. Further rescue efforts will be made once weather conditions improve. -- 2024-09-18

Picture from bystanders. The incident occurred in Chachoengsao when a truck driver lost control and crashed into several parked cars outside a noodle restaurant, smashing into a power pole and igniting in flames. Despite efforts to save the driver, he tragically died in the wreckage. At around 16:20 on September 17, Pol. Lt. Nontasit Phongsirikornkul, the investigative officer of Bang Nam Priao Police Station, Chachoengsao, received reports of a crash involving a truck on Suwinthawong Road in Sala Daeng Subdistrict. The truck had smashed into cars parked outside a restaurant and burst into flames, killing the truck driver. Several vehicles were severely damaged. Upon arriving at the scene, authorities discovered a white Hino truck with license plate number from Chachoengsao had collided with a Honda sedan, a Toyota Revo pickup truck and a Toyota Vios sedan. All vehicles were heavily damaged, with one power pole completely knocked over. Fire had engulfed the front of the truck, but locals managed to contain it before it spread. The truck driver's body was found trapped in the vehicle, his legs pinned under the dashboard. Rescue teams used hydraulic cutters to extract his body, which was badly burned. Eyewitnesses revealed that the accident began when a LPG gas truck scraped against the vehicle, causing the truck to lose control and plow into the parked vehicles. The impact caused the power pole to snap, resulting in electrical sparks. Passersby rushed to help, with some using buckets of water to try to extinguish the fire. However, the fire quickly grew, forcing the rescuers to abandon their efforts. Unfortunately, the driver's legs were stuck, and he was unable to escape as the flames overtook him. Wanlisa, the owner of one of the damaged sedans, recounted the terrifying moment. She had just parked her car with her family in Chachoengsao, intending to return to Bangkok after a day out. Fortunately, the family had just stepped out of the car to eat when the accident happened. "It was pure luck that no one in my family was hurt. We had only just parked, and moments later, we heard a loud crash and saw the truck plowing into the parked cars," she said, visibly shaken by the ordeal. Authorities have since sent the truck driver's body to Bang Nam Priao Hospital for further examination. The gas truck driver is in police custody and will be questioned about the incident. Tow trucks were brought in to remove the damaged vehicles, and further investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash. Police have stated that they will proceed with legal action once all the facts have been gathered and interviews with the involved parties are complete. Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Foreign Labour in Fishing Industry A coordinated operation involving over 50 officials from various agencies was launched to investigate illegal foreign labour in the fishing sector, targeting the area of Nong Na Khlue in Bang Lamung district. Picture courtesy of SiamChon. A coordinated operation at 06:15 on September 16, involving over 50 officials from various agencies was launched to investigate illegal foreign labour in the fishing sector. The team, led by Pol. Lt. Col. Veerachai ThinKamuth, Chonburi Immigration Division, along with Deputy Superintendent of the same division, Lt. Col. Aingkwat Kreangsinkul, Chonburi fisheries chief Mr. Natthapong Wanpath, and Deputy Director of the Chonburi Maritime Enforcement Command, Na. Adm. Pinai Jinchai, targeted the area of Nong Na Khlue in Bang Lamung district. This operation was prompted by complaints from local fishermen regarding illegal foreign workers, specifically from Myanmar and Cambodia, who were allegedly encroaching on the livelihoods of Thai nationals. Officials swept through the area, inspecting fishing boats and processing points, where they found numerous undocumented foreign workers engaged in sorting seafood. During the extensive checks along the Na Khlue Long Bridge to Soi Sam Yaek Tham Da, authorities requested identification documents from the workers. Many presented their papers, but several were found lacking proper documentation. Additional inspections near Bang Lamung Canal revealed groups of foreign workers employed under various fishing operations, where employers provided documentation confirming their employment. Chonburi fisheries chief Natthapong Wanpath explained that the investigation aimed to verify whether these foreign workers were legally permitted to perform fishing activities, in light of reports suggesting they were monopolising local jobs. Lt. Col. Aingkwat Kreangsinkul emphasised the commitment of immigration officers to audit all identified foreign workers and ensure their documentation was in order. He stressed the importance of accurately reporting the residences of foreign workers to facilitate efficient tracking in case of emergencies. He noted the focus of the operation not only included illegal fishing practices but also addressed potential human trafficking issues. He warned that legal actions would be taken against any violations uncovered during their investigations. Additionally, he urged local fishermen, especially those operating small vessels, to remain aware of sea conditions during the monsoon season and reminded them to contact the Chonburi Maritime Enforcement Command at 1465 for assistance in any maritime emergencies. This comprehensive crackdown underscores the authorities’ ongoing effort to regulate the fishing industry and protect the livelihoods of local fishermen against illegal foreign labour. -- 2024-09-17
