Picture from responders. A woman driving a BMW car, who caused a crash that killed a mother and her two children in Chumphon province, failed to attend a second scheduled mediation session with prosecutors and the victims’ family. The incident occurred on November 27, when Jirantanin Tangkhao, 30, was driving at high speed and rear-ended a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of the mother and her two children near a bridge in Tak Daet subdistrict, Muang district, Chumphon. Police charged her with multiple offenses, and she was released on bail pending further investigation. The case is being prepared for submission to the Chumphon Provincial Court. Initially, both parties were summoned to mediate at Muang Chumphon Police Station, but the driver failed to appear, citing illness. A new session was scheduled for December 9, at the Chumphon Office of Rights Protection and Legal Aid. However, she failed to show up again. At 13:30 on December 9, the prosecutor handling the case, Nattapong Boonthongkong, along with Deputy Superintendent Panin Choti and the victims’ family, including Prakrit Rattanapha, the husband and father of the deceased, waited at the mediation session. Despite extended delays, neither Jirantanin nor her representatives attended. Prakrit later reported that the prosecutor had explained the legal process for both criminal and civil cases. He also submitted a formal request for the prosecutor to issue another written invitation to Jirantanin, proposing December 25, 2024, at 13:00 as the next mediation date. The prosecutor assured that the letter would be sent by Thursday. “If she doesn’t attend again, it will only harm her case,” Prakrit said. Regarding the criminal case, Prakrit noted that prosecutors and police assured him the case would proceed promptly, with an expected court filing within three months. For the civil case, progress depends on the defendant’s cooperation. Prakrit stated that if the defendant continues to delay, legal measures would be pursued to prevent further prolongation. Nattapong added that the mediation process is separate from the criminal proceedings, which continue as police gather evidence. He emphasised that if the defendant fails to attend further mediation, the victims can still pursue compensation through legal means. “If she does not attend again, it doesn’t mean she will avoid responsibility. The case will move forward, and the criminal trial will include opportunities for mediation in court,” Nattapong explained. The case remains under investigation, with prosecutors and authorities aiming to ensure justice for the victims’ family. Construction Worker Killed After Machinery Topples on Him A incident occurred at a construction site in Charansanitwong Soi 57/2, Bangkok, where a 19-year-old worker lost his life after being struck by part of a pile-driving machine that toppled on him. Picture from responders. A incident occurred at a construction site in Charansanitwong Soi 57/2, Bangkok, where a 19-year-old worker lost his life after being struck by part of a pile-driving machine that toppled on him. The incident took place near Wat Vimutt, at a residential construction site. Eyewitnesses reported that the worker, later identified as Anuwat, was involved in supporting the pile-driving machinery when it suddenly collapsed. The heavy machinery, struck him on the head and torso, pinning him partially beneath it. Emergency responders arrived quickly, and although Anuwat initially showed signs of breathing, he later succumbed to his injuries despite receiving CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on-site. Anuwat’s colleagues described the moments leading up to the incident. They stated that the machine, a large three-legged pile-driving rig, began to tip over after encountering a large rock in the hole where it was being operated. The machine’s operator, who was Anuwat’s father-in-law, had shouted a warning that the equipment was about to detach from its hook. Anuwat attempted to flee, but the machine fell in the direction he was moving, crushing him. The construction site had been active since early December, with pile driving being one of the initial stages of construction for a single-story home. The construction had been progressing without major issues until this unfortunate event occurred. Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident, focusing on possible miscommunication during operation. According to a statement from the site foreman, the process of using the drilling machine requires team coordination, and it appears that a brief lapse in communication, compounded by the loud noise of the machine, led to the fatal mistake. The investigation continues, and the body of the deceased has been sent for autopsy. In the meantime, the police are questioning individuals involved in the incident as part of the legal process. -- 2024-12-10

Picture and video from bystanders. A group of Royal Thai Navy personnel intervened to save a distraught young woman attempting to jump from a pedestrian bridge on Sukhumvit Road near the Navy Recruit Training Centre in Sattahip, Chonburi. The incident occurred at 13.45 on December 8, when Lieutenant Commander Jirasak Sakphan, from the Navy’s Finance Department, was traveling to Pattaya with Petty Officer First Class Montri Charoenrit and three naval cadets when they witnessed the incident. While stopped at a red light, the group spotted a 25-year-old woman sitting on the railing of the bridge, sobbing uncontrollably and dangling her legs over the edge. Recognising the urgency of the situation, they immediately parked their vehicle and called the police and emergency services. Lieutenant Commander Jirasak and Petty Officer Montri positioned themselves below the bridge to engage the woman in conversation, attempting to calm her. Meanwhile, the three naval cadets, Dhanaitep Chusri, Samrit Kumwong, and Tachnucha Sontwanet, rushed onto the bridge to prepare for a potential rescue. Despite their efforts to soothe her, the woman showed no signs of calming down and appeared ready to jump. Acting quickly, Lieutenant Commander Jirasak distracted her by diverting her attention, giving the cadets a crucial moment to act. In a coordinated move, they lunged forward and pulled her back to safety, albeit with some difficulty, as she continued crying hysterically. Local residents revealed that the woman had been arguing heatedly with her foreign boyfriend over his infidelity, which had driven her to attempt suicide. Thanks to the quick thinking and teamwork of the navy personnel, the woman’s life was saved. She was handed over to authorities for further support and counselling. EV Owners Frustrated as Samui Ferries Restrict EV Transport Over New Year Period Electric vehicle (EV) owners planning to visit Koh Samui for the New Year holidays have been left disappointed following an announcement by Raja Ferry PLC that it will temporarily suspend ferry services for EVs due to safety concerns. The company cited risks associated with EV batteries, particularly the potential for overheating and fires, as the reason for the decision. File picture for reference only. Electric vehicle (EV) owners planning to visit Koh Samui for the New Year holidays have been left disappointed following an announcement by Raja Ferry PLC that it will temporarily suspend ferry services for EVs due to safety concerns. The company cited risks associated with EV batteries, particularly the potential for overheating and fires, as the reason for the decision. The announcement, first posted on the “Hia Kub Rod” Facebook page, has caused concern among EV owners both on Koh Samui and those planning to visit during the festive season. Raja Ferry stated that the suspension is intended to ensure the safety of passengers and their belongings, sparking uncertainty for EV users seeking alternatives to access the island. In contrast, Seatran Ferry, another ferry operator servicing Koh Samui, continues to allow EVs onboard, albeit with additional precautions. Seatran Ferry requires EV owners to complete a detailed form acknowledging the risks associated with battery transportation. The company has also designated specific parking areas on its ferries for EVs to facilitate rapid response in case of emergencies. The acknowledgment form includes a disclaimer stating: “Passengers understand and accept the risks associated with transporting vehicles on the ferry, including potential damage to EVs. The company will only be held liable for incidents caused by negligence on the part of employees or representatives.” EV owners who sign the form can board Seatran Ferries as usual, with their vehicles receiving extra monitoring by ferry staff. Despite this option, Raja Ferry’s suspension has caused significant inconvenience, as it leaves only one operator available for EV transportation. This limited service is expected to result in longer wait times and congestion, particularly during the busy New Year period. Tourism businesses on Koh Samui are bracing for a potential economic impact. With EV owners facing logistical challenges, some may opt to change their travel plans and visit other destinations, potentially leading to a decline in tourist revenue for the island during the peak holiday season. -- 2024-12-10

Picture from responders. A family in Nong Bua Lamphu Province is mourning the tragic loss of a 26-year-old woman who took her own life after years of struggling with academic pressure and personal disappointment. Police Lieutenant Colonel Wiwitchai Chaiyaphet and a team of investigators, along with rescue divers from the Narai Volunteer Foundation, were called to the Lam Phaniang Creek near Nong Wa Yai village in Mueang District after reports of a woman jumping off a bridge. The divers recovered the body after an hour of searching. The deceased was identified as Ms. Kanyanat, a resident of Non Khomint Subdistrict, Mueang District. At the scene, authorities found a blue Honda motorcycle registered in Nong Bua Lamphu parked near the bridge. A pair of white sneakers had been placed neatly beside the vehicle, with the key still in the ignition. Ms. Kanokporn, 50, the mother of the deceased, tearfully recounted that her daughter had been an outstanding student who had passed entrance exams for universities in Nakhon Ratchasima and Chiang Mai in recent years. However, the programs offered were not her daughter's preferred choice. Her dream was to study pharmacy, which prompted her to continue pursuing higher scores in the GAT/PAT exams. Earlier that morning, Ms. Kanyanat left home to attend an exam but did not return by evening. The family later received a heartbreaking report from a concerned citizen who witnessed her parking her motorcycle at the bridge before climbing over and jumping. Ms. Kanokporn revealed that her daughter had shown signs of depression and withdrawal since early 2023. Concerned for her well-being, the family sought medical advice, and Ms. Kanyanat had been receiving treatment and medication since then. Despite her struggles, she never gave any indication of planning such a tragic act. The family disclosed that the father, who works abroad, received a final message from Ms. Kanyanat shortly before the incident. A medical examination confirmed no signs of foul play, and the family expressed no suspicions regarding her death. Authorities have since released the body to the family. The grieving family hopes this tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support for those facing academic and personal pressures.
