  4. Picture of the incident courtesy of ThaiRath. Multiple possible explosions were heard from an electric water pump station in Tha Song Khon, Maha Sarakham. The incident occurred as the station was operating at full capacity to pump water from an overflowing reservoir. The incident took place on September 19, following heavy rains that caused the Kaeng Loeng Chan Reservoir in Mueang District to exceed its capacity, reaching 105% with 8.4 million cubic metres of water, surpassing its 8 million cubic metre limit. As the water spilled over, it flowed into the overflow canal designed to channel excess water into the Chi River. However, the rising water level of the Chi River presented an obstacle to the drainage efforts. In response, irrigation officials activated four high-capacity pumps at the Tha Song Khon sluice gate to drain nearly 1 million cubic metres of water per day, aiming to prevent floodwaters from entering the inner city. At approximately 18:00 a short circuit occurred in the control panel of one of the electric pumps, igniting a fire inside the Tha Song Khon sluice gate building. Multiple explosions followed, sending clouds of smoke into the air and causing nearby villagers, who had been fishing near the station, to flee in all directions. The series of explosions ceased shortly after, but the control panel continued to burn, disabling all four pumps in operation. Rescue personnel from the Tha Song Khon Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (SAO) arrived at the scene, using fire extinguishers to put out the flames. Authorities are now awaiting forensic investigators to determine the cause of the fire and subsequent explosions. An official from the pump station stated that the pumps had been restarted at 17:00 following a brief one-hour break after running continuously for 10 hours. Moments after restarting, the official heard two loud bangs from the back of the control panel, and upon inspection, discovered a short circuit had triggered the fire. Despite efforts to shut down the system, an explosion occurred before the switch could be thrown, leaving the cause of the short circuit unclear. In preparation for the incoming Typhoon Saola, expected to hit the region on September 20, the irrigation department plans to deploy large portable pumps as a temporary measure. Officials will monitor water levels around the clock and advise residents to follow emergency protocols in the event of sudden flooding. -- 2024-09-20

  12. Picture from responders. In a shocking crime, two bodies were discovered stuffed into the back of a pickup truck abandoned in a rice field in Kalasin province. The victims, a father and son, were found brutally murdered, and police are now investigating the case as a homicide. At around 9:00, local police were alerted to the discovery of the bodies in a pickup truck parked in a remote rice field in Non Sawan village, Nong Itao subdistrict, Yang Talat district. Upon investigation, officers identified the victims as 62-year-old Mr. Rian and his 32-year-old son, Mr. Piyapong, both residents of Yang Talat. According to preliminary reports, Mr. Rian was found with a gunshot wound to his left side, while his son showed signs of severe trauma, including head injuries from a blunt object, ligature marks on his neck, and a gunshot wound under his left armpit. The bodies were found lying atop one another in the bed of the Toyota pickup truck, which also contained a single cow standing unharmed. Further investigation at a nearby forest area, about 500 metres from the crime scene, uncovered shell casings, rope, shirt buttons, and bloodstains, suggesting that the murder took place there before the bodies were transported the short distance across the provincial boundary back into Kalasin. Residents reported seeing the two men in the area the previous afternoon but had assumed they were resting. The victims' relatives, including Mr. Piyapong’s wife, revealed that the father and son were cattle traders who had left home in the early hours of September 18 to conduct business as usual at a local cattle market. Mrs. Piyapong last spoke to her husband at 9:00 that day, but became concerned when subsequent calls went unanswered, prompting the family to begin searching for them. Police suspect that the murders were a targeted robbery, as the victims had reportedly been carrying 100,000 baht in cash from cattle sales, along with a gold necklace, both of which were missing from the scene. The attackers, believed to be a group of at least three, are thought to have known the victims and lured them into the fatal encounter. Authorities from Kalasin and Maha Sarakham provinces are now collaborating in a joint investigation, as the crime spanned both jurisdictions. They are working to gather further evidence and pursue suspects to bring those responsible to justice. The victims' family, devastated by the loss, has called for swift action in arresting the perpetrators. -- 2024-09-20

  19. Picture of the burnt charcoal at the scene. A family of three, consisting of a father, mother, and their young daughter, was found dead in their rented home in Pluak Daeng District, Rayong Province. A note was discovered at the scene, and initial investigations have found no visible signs of trauma, with authorities suspecting CO poisoning or suffocation as the cause of death. In the morning of September 18, at 09:00, Pol. Sub-Lt. Natthaphon Chumpoo of the Pluak Daeng Police Station was notified of the tragic incident. The victims were discovered in the bedroom of a one-story townhouse located in Soi Mab Yang Phon 14, Mab Yang Phon Subdistrict. The deceased were identified as Mr. Saiyan, 50, the father; Ms. Kanokorn, 43, the mother; and their daughter, Anyaporn, 12. In the room there was a metal bowl containing charcoal remains, believed to have been used to fill the room with smoke. Authorities collected evidence from the scene, and forensic officers from Pluak Daeng Hospital conducted preliminary examinations. The absence of any external injuries on the bodies led doctors to initially suggest suffocation and carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of death. The bodies have been sent to Pluak Daeng Hospital for further autopsy to determine the precise cause. Ms. Thongkoon, 46, a relative of the deceased, reported her suspicions after noticing the family had not left for work. Upon enlisting help to break into the house, the tragic discovery was made. She revealed that both parents suffered from depression, while the daughter had autism. The family had previously lived in Bangkok but relocated to Pluak Daeng following business troubles. Ms. Thongkoon mentioned that she had been closely supporting the family and was shocked by the incident. The owner of the rented house, who had leased the property to the family for a year, expressed disbelief, describing them as kind and good-natured people who had never missed a rent payment. The deaths came as a complete surprise to him. The investigation into the exact cause of this event continues. -- 2024-09-19

Police believe the infant had been dead for approximately two days before being found. A search is now underway to identify the mother. On September 18, officers from Sai Noi Police Station, alongside volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, arrived at the scene in response to reports of a newborn’s body floating in Khlong Ha Roi, Moo 2, Khlong Khwang Subdistrict, Sai Noi District, Nonthaburi Province. Medical professionals were called in to assist in the investigation. The body of the infant, found to be in good physical condition, was retrieved from the water by rescue workers. Preliminary examination revealed an elastic band tied around the umbilical cord, and it is estimated the infant had been deceased for around two days. Ms. Daraporn Kongprasert, 52, wife of the local village headman and a volunteer health worker in the area, reported that a resident had alerted them to the body. Upon inspection, they found the infant floating near a bridge about 20 metres from where it was initially spotted. Ms. Daraporn described the body as being face-down, with the newborn’s skin still red, and with the umbilical cord attached. She suggested that the body might not have been abandoned by a local, as she doubted anyone from the village would commit such an act. Ms. Daraporn speculated that the perpetrator might have been a migrant worker, given the significant population of migrant laborers living in the area, with many residing in nearby dormitories and working in local factories. She also confirmed that no local women were known to be pregnant, based on her role as a health worker. Police officials stated that they have photographed the scene and interviewed local residents but have yet to identify any suspects. Authorities plan to continue gathering information and will summon the responsible party for questioning. The infant's body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Science for further examination to determine the exact cause of death and collect additional evidence. -- 2024-09-19
