  6. Picture showing location of the incident. Authorities in Chachoengsao reported the death of a 63-year-old woman, Boonmee (surname withheld) on September 13, who drowned in the Bang Pakong River while diving for shrimp, a livelihood she had practiced for decades despite her son’s repeated warnings to stop due to her age. At 10:30 Lieutenant Alisa Thirasilp, an investigator from the Muang Chachoengsao Police Station, received a report of a body found floating in the Bang Pakong River near the Bang Pakong Water Dam in Bang Kaew subdistrict. Rescue teams and forensic specialists from Phutthasothon Hospital were dispatched to the scene. Fishermen had discovered the woman’s body floating face-up in the river and had used ropes to pull it ashore. Upon investigation, the body was identified as Mrs. Boonmee from Ban Saowachakok in Bang Khla district. Further details revealed that her son, Mr. Jatuporn (surname withheld), 27, had reported his mother missing after she went diving for shrimp near the local market canal the previous day. Despite rescue efforts, divers were unable to locate her body, and the search was suspended for the night. Mrs. Boonmee's body was found with a shrimp-catching net still tied around her waist. Her son shared that she had supported the family by diving for shrimp since he was a child. Even though he had urged her to retire from the dangerous profession due to her age, she refused, worried about losing her income. “I came home from work yesterday and couldn't find her,” said Mr. Jatuporn. “After asking around, I learned that she had gone to the canal to dive for shrimp, but no one had seen her since. I notified the police and rescue teams, but we couldn’t find her.” Authorities believe Mrs. Boonmee may have suffered a medical issue while diving, causing her to drown without anyone noticing. Her body has been sent for further examination at Phutthasothon Hospital. -- 2024-09-14 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

  21. Picture from responders. Nonthaburi was hit by a severe thunderstorm on the evening of September 12, causing significant damage throughout the area. A commercial building’s parking roof covering collapsed and was blown into the street, taking down power poles and crushing vehicles. The local hospital, Phra Nang Klao, had to rely on backup generators as the storm damage caused a widespread power outage. At approximately 19:30, the Nonthaburi Municipality's disaster prevention and mitigation team received a report about a collapsed roof covering that had fallen on cars parked in front of Phra Nang Klao Hospital, located in Bang Krasor, Mueang District, Nonthaburi Province. Combined withheavy rainfall and powerful winds the falling roof, led to several power poles collapsing onto vehicles, damaging over ten cars and motorcycles. Mayor Samanuek Thanadechakul was informed of the situation and dispatched Deputy Mayor Apiwat Phetruang, alongside local police and electricity officials, to assess the damage. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a two-story, ten-unit commercial building with a metal roofed parking area behind it. The strong winds had ripped the roof off, causing it to crash onto cars and motorcycles parked on the roadside. Additionally, three power poles were knocked down. Municipal officials were forced to temporarily close one side of the road while workers cleared the debris and power company officials cut the electricity to begin repairs. Apiwat explained that the illegal extension of the building's roof was to blame, as the powerful winds easily lifted and destroyed the structure. The resulting damage caused an immediate power outage in the area, forcing Phra Nang Klao Hospital to switch to its backup generator, as it lost all mains power. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Electricity officials took 5 hours to fully restore power to the area. -- 2024-09-13 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

  23. Picture from responders. A construction crane toppled over on September 12, near a subway construction site in Thonburi, injuring a motorcyclist passing through the area. The incident occurred at the entrance of Soi Taksin 9/3 on Somdet Phra Chao Taksin Road in the Samre Subdistrict of Thonburi District, Bangkok, close to Samitivej Thonburi Hospital. The injured individual has been identified as Mr. Pitsanu, a motorcyclist who was riding through the area at the time of the collapse. He sustained injuries including a fractured right leg and a wound on his left shoulder. Rescue teams promptly transferred him to Samitivej Thonburi Hospital for immediate treatment. Eyewitness Mr. Uthen, who was also riding his motorcycle near the scene, reported seeing the crane in operation before it began to sway. Moments later, the crane toppled over, crushing the motorbike beneath it. According to Mr. Uthen, the crane's collapse appeared sudden, and he recalled hearing a loud noise just before it fell onto the motorcyclist. Upon inspection of the area, it was noted that the ground near the construction site showed signs of subsidence, with a noticeable depression where the crane had been stationed. This has led authorities to suspect that ground instability may have caused the collapse. Following the incident, Pol. Lt. Natthapong Khanarat, an investigative officer from Bukkhalo Police Station, arrived at the scene to assess the situation. Authorities dismantled the damaged crane and cleared the area to prevent further accidents. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the ground subsidence and whether there were any violations of safety regulations during the crane's operation. -- 2024-09-13 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe
