On August 20, Vice Admiral Surasak Singkorawat, Commander of the First Naval Area Command, led a fleet consisting of HTMS Tachai, Patrol Vessel Tor 998, Type 1 Anti-Submarine Helicopter (ASW.1), and an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS Schiebel Camcopter S-100), to participate in the Rayong Oil Spill Exercise 2024 (ROSE '24). This exercise was organized by the Industrial Environment and Conservation Group (IESG) in collaboration with the Subcommittee on Oil Spill Prevention and Control in Rayong and the First Region Maritime National Interest Administration Center (MNAC1). The exercise was a test of the new draft plan for handling oil and chemical spills. The scenario simulated a Tier 2 crude oil spill outside the port area, with the Department of Marine coordinating with MNAC1 to establish a command center. The Navy was requested to deploy ships, aircraft, and personnel to contain the oil spill as part of the plan. This exercise aligns with the Royal Thai Navy's policy to enhance its capabilities in responding to maritime disasters. The goal is to ensure effective and timely operations in emergency situations, bolstering the security of marine resources and protecting the nation's maritime environment. -- 2024-08-22 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

Pictures from responders A incident occurred in Lopburi when a woman was injured after her truck rolled over her at a steep delivery area of a prominent shopping mall. The woman, identified as Mrs. Naruemon (surname withheld), 44, became trapped under her vehicle and suffered serious injuries due to the heat from the exhaust pipe. The incident took place around 08:45, on August 22 at a delivery area of a well-known shopping mall located on Phahonyothin Road in Lopburi. Mrs. Naruemon was reportedly taking photos when the vehicle unexpectedly began rolling downhill. The truck crushed her underneath, dragging her body until it collided with the mall’s wall. Rescue personnel from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, alongside police officers from Lopburi City Police Station, quickly responded to the scene. After 30 minutes using hydraulic tools and jacks, they managed to free the injured woman, who was in excruciating pain due to burns from the exhaust and other injuries. She was immediately rushed to Phra Narai Maharaj Hospital for emergency treatment. Eyewitnesses revealed that Mrs. Naruemon regularly came to the mall to pick up and deliver goods. On this occasion, she had forgotten to fully engage the handbrake or use wheel blocks. While she was standing in front of the vehicle to take photos as part of routine documentation, the truck started moving downhill, causing the accident. Before being transported to the hospital, Mrs. Naruemon expressed to those around her that she feared she might not survive the ordeal due to the intense heat and inability to breathe while trapped under the vehicle. She also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the rescuers for saving her life. Authorities are investigating the incident further, focusing on the possibility of negligence regarding the handbrake and proper safety precautions when parking on inclined surfaces. -- 2024-08-22 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe The ramp the car rolled down.

Picture of the missing items. At 16:30 on August 21, Ms. Yothaka, 40, reached out to the media, asking for help in recovering several valuable jewellery items worth hundreds of thousands of baht that were lost earlier that morning. The incident occurred on the road along the Khao Talo railway, heading towards Chaiyapruek 1, Nong Prue Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province. A police report has already been filed. Ms. Yothaka explained that she had entrusted the store's jewelry craftsman to collect items that had been polished and refurbished by another craftsman located in the Khao Talo area. The lost items include two gold emerald rings, one gold diamond ring, one foreign gold ring, one tourmaline gemstone necklace, and a pair of earrings, with a total value exceeding 250,000 baht. The jewelry was placed in a zip-lock bag and then put in the craftsman's shirt pocket during his return journey. He took the route along the Khao Talo railway road towards Chaiyapruek 1. Unfortunately, by the time he realised it, the jewellery was already missing. Despite efforts to retrace his steps, the items could not be found. Ms. Yothaka is pleading with anyone who may have found the lost items to return them. Some of the jewelry pieces belong to customers and hold significant sentimental value as family heirlooms. She also requests that local pawnshops or jewellery buyers be on alert and report if someone tries to sell the items. A reward of 20,000 baht will be offered for the safe return of the jewellery. -- 2024-08-21 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

Emergency responders immediately performed CPR and requested additional support from Pluak Daeng Hospital.
