  2. Hi Folks,

My g/f and myself are thinking of getting married. I am in Thailand on an retirement visa. Can anyone tell me what is required these day's, in the way of visa, + income and money in bank. The ceromony we are talking aboutt is the Thai phittee-mun. Thanks. jb1

  3. send , say 10,000 pounds to begin with via SWIFT to BKK Bank . And get a Tor Tor Sam ( foreign exchange document - which becomes necessary if at a later date you need to use the money for a condo purchase or else return the money to the UK ) Then send the remainder in equal portions - reason , i may be wrong and it wouldn;t be the first time , but there are limitations on how much cash you can import into Thailand in one go. The government may 'impound' some of it if you breach the limit . Regards

Ah that is interesting. As I have just sent 25k to my BKK account via Nationwide.

Next question does anyone know the cash limit plus how do I get an Tor Tor Sam. Just user friendly answers please.

    Cheers jb1

  4. jim go to nationwide, the best deal ive ever had. dont know about 30k in one hit, ive taken 500k bt in one hit many times. depends how quick you need the 30k. even a house dont need 30k in one hit but it may be no problem anyway. ask them.

Hi egg. I am with the Nation wide and they tell me I can only do 2.500 sterling.

  5. Hi Folks,

Just wondering if anyone can help.

I will be moving out to Thailand in a few weeks. Can anyone advise me of the best way to transfere money out. I am possibly looking to get out around £30,000 to start. I have been told that travellers cheques are a good way. I now only have a building society account in England. They only do travellers cheques up to £2,500 in any 90 day period. The Post Office do not have a limit, but highest denomination cheque is for £100.00 and that means a lot of signing. Travel company fees are to high. Any useful help appreciated. Cheers. jb1

I do have an account with Bank of Bangkok.

  6. Hi Scotsman.

Yeah i did read that post by Peter Pallott. I thought ok good. Then I contacted my local health authority last week and was told that if I paid income tax and national insurance I would still be classed as non resident in the uk. Therefore only eligable for emergency haelth care?

    Best regards. jb1

  7. Hi Andy. I have been talking to a guy on the forum about this matter. He came up with one which sounds quite good. It's with Bupa. The one we are looking at is the Emerald plan. Give it a look.

  8. Hi Folks.

Can anyone help? I was reading a report on Thaivisa Insurance, about repercussions for expats and the NHS. Report filed 22/03/04.

It stated that if anyone was out of the UK for more than 3 months a year, that they would not be eligible fot NHS treatment. Unless it could be proven that they had returned to stay. It later stated I think if you are still paying UK Income tax you would be classed as resident.

As I intend to rent my house out when I come to Thailand. Therefore I will paying dear old UK tax, would I still qualify? Cheers.

    Best regards

Hi guys. Some great looking designs. I am hoping to come over from England later this year, maybe early next year. We have bought a plot of land, in Chumphung N/E of Khorat and looking to build. Does anyone know if plans such ass these excist in English. Although thinking about it dont suppose any great need. Must take crash course in Thai.

No chance mate, even if they do, you've still got to get a Thai to build it :o

Although it's pretty obvious what they're all about most of the time particularly if you've got the missus and a Thai / Engrish dictionary. Print the plans out A3 and you'll soon suss the important points :D You will DEFINATELY want to modify the electrics and probably the plumbing too.

Hi Crossy. I didnt think i could plans in English, but as you said with the dear lady and a good book.

as for the plumbing that is my game anyway. So i hope to be doing that myself. The building i think we will be using a local guy, that i've yet to meet. I'm next over in a couple of months, so i intend to go over armed with plans and see what can be worked out. I must say what i've seen so far look very impressive. Cheers all...... jb1

  12. I am in the process of getting health insurance.

I went along for the medical, and gave them all my medical notes from UK.

I am on medication for High Blood Pressure, so no cover for that, fine.

They said i am a little overweight, fine.

They will not give me cover because my notes say that i have had a heart condition since i was a child, not true.

Nor will they give me cover, because i have lived in Thailand less than six months.

I can argue about the Heart Condition, but is living in Thailand less than six months, reason to refuse cover?

Are all companies the same, in this respect?

BTW They said "Come back in October, and we will give you cover"

Also, while i'm here, can anyone recommend a good company.

It sounds like you tried to buy health insurance from a life insurance company. If you had gone to a real health insurance company like AXA, BUPA, LMG, MSIG, NZI, PIH or THI, all good companies, you wouldn't have had that problem. If you are 60 or older, though, LMG will require a physical. The is no six month waiting period and health insurance companies don't require work permits. Life insurance companies do because of the life insurance.

I dont know where you are from but my wife and I use PPP International Health plan...we organised it before we left the UK

Hello john45. How much did you pay for health care?
