  1. I constantly read about foreigners complaining about the way we are treated here be it for immigration, business or simply buying a house.

If you think you are being treated unfairly write an email to your embassador, only they have the power to put some pressure in the Thai government if you want change.

I constantly hear about not being able to fully own a business or buy a house under your name. If your country extend these rights to Thai people and enough people complain they will start to think and hopefully say "hey this is not fair".

Thai people come to your country and we let them buy land, own a business, right to work if they marry and citizenship after 4 yrs.

Do you get the same treatment here??

Well the UK government does very little for it's expats.
Expat pensioners even get their state pensions frozen.

  2. I enjoy drinking coffee in a number of different premises. There is no shortage of competition from both other chains and independents in Thailand.
Starbucks sell well because their style of coffee suits a number of people and the corporate standard for seating and periferal services like free access to Wi-Fi and newspapers are enjoyed.

  3. Because the left is correct as derived from the days of horseback travel. Right hand drivers just blindly followed the US like sheep. Something like 2.5 billion drive on the left. As for strange countries, whenever I see the words Swiss or Switzerland I have this wave of bafflement come over me... like what have these awkward folk ever done for the world. [emoji6]

Left hand drive or riding puts your sword arm closer to the approaching stranger.

Napoleon decided his troops would match on the right and the American colonial traitors and rebels followed their ally France.

I went today to get UK passport renewed.  There is a VFS front desk right inside the door, they speak english and directed me to the lift to 28th floor, pretty clear and straight forward.  Staff were efficient and helpful.  It seems if you have a work permit you don't need any proof of address, from what I can tell what they care about is that you're legally a resident of Thailand, not about where you live, so copy of work permit takes care of that.

I also had bank statements with my address but wasn't asked for them.  I also had a copy of my UK drivers license and they took that as well.  All good, in and out in 15 minutes.

Does your UK licence show your Thailand address.

I was told a UK driving licence could only be registered to a UK address

  5. If anyone wants to send a thank you note to the USA and the US Army, for providing most of the funding, feel free to send it to the US Military HIV Health Research Program in Bethesda Maryland.

The results of the RC144 immunity mechanism lab studies published in the NEJM in April provided the first signs of hope in many years. Again, you can send your thank you note to Col. Jerry Kim of the MHRP. Col. Nelson Michael, the big boss over at MHRP, was a co-author with Dr. Kim. Those guys are brilliant.

The Thai research units recruit & screen the volunteers, administer the vaccines, take blood and do follow ups. All the key research is done at facilities in the USA.

They are doing the recruiting at Bang Lamung Hospital in Chonburi. Its a small 90 bed public hospital so you may have to sit with the great unwashed.

Thanks for this informative post noting that funding was provided by the USA and US Army resources, staff, and facilities. Curious that the newspaper didn't note this. It would be interesting to know what Dr. Punee thinks about the new Quad HIV drug developed by Gilead Sciences of Israel. Curious that The Nation has never noted anything about this new drug currently approved by the FDA in the USA.

Could be interpreted as US uses Thai people for drug research .

Would that be because of altruism, because it is cheaper in Thailand than the USA or because the tests would leave them open to law suits in the US or because the tests may not even be legal in the US?

Or am I just being cynical?

  6. Welcome news - if a long time in coming.

While 20 branches is clearly not enough for a retail banking model, it will be fine for corporate banking, trade finance and (possibly) wealth management. perhaps the ATMs will persuade the Thai banks to roll back their rapacous fee structure for the use of foreign cards in local ATMs.

150 baht is not excessive. The Thai bank charges 150 baht for the convenience. My Hawaii bank whacks me $5.00 plus an international transfer fee.

I've gone back to using travelers cheques for most exchange transactions.

No charges from my home bank

Generally better exchange rates when cashing them

Paying lower commission rates to the exchanger
