  1. Not quite sure how to reply on this site. I just want to add, that I am working as an english teacher in a gov't school in a small town in the province of Kamphaeng Phet. Nobody wants to work here as a teacher. Because of my lack of a BA, the school seems to be unwilling to support a WP application. They are however, willing to employ me without a WP and are quite happy to have me. I have been honest with them about my lack of qualifications from the start. They have only been able to attract Phillipino teachers thus far, which the students have a hard time understanding. They prefer me with no qualifications over a non native speaker with qualifications. I am unsure about the consequences of doing this if caught or the chances of being caught. I think I know what the rules are, but this is Thailand. Can anyone educate me on this? In case you are wondering....I came here for a girl. Her uncle is Sub-Director at the high school here. I haven't been teaching at the school for long, reports from the students and the other 6 english teachers (Thai) are quite favorable. They want me to stay, but are unsure about how to proceed with me. They say that no WP is less of a problem than applying for one would be. Feedback?

Whatever it is they are paying you, ask for more. Save more money, be happy. Don't worry too much. Show them that if they can't get you the paperwork they are going to have to pay more money or else have a full Filipino staff. You are doing them a favor by working there. You said it yourself that no one else would wants to work there!! I doubt you'll get deported for working without a permit unless someone takes a big disliking for you, even then with the Uncle in charge nothing can happen to you.

  2. We sent a PC computer from Korat to just outside BKK via post. Maybe 500-600kms. All paperwork was done in Thai. 2 boxes. One with monitor and 1 with PC. 200baht for each box. Total 400 baht. The boxes were charged by weight.

The PC arrived, and the monitor arrived 3 days later. We panicked that something may have happened to the monitor, maybe fell of the truck? But, we decided not to call the post office. Didn't want anyone losing face and taking it out on my monitor. But yeah everything arrived in working condition eventually.

I am very surprised and happy that the computer works after a week on Thailand's highways.

  3. Off to singapore tomorrow for the infamous Non O.

I've got all my paperwork, I think!!

    4 quickies

    1. Where is the best place to exchange Baht to Singapore money

    2. When taking the house registration copy (from Thai wife) do I just need the first page and the page with her name on it copied. When we married all's that was needed was the first page ( I assume with the house address) and the page with her name on it...

    Or the whole book copied?

    3. For occupation on the application, should i fill that out with my prvious occuaption or is unemployed blank ok? I am showing money in the bank (savings).

    4. For address in Thailand, can I write, "see housing registration"?

  4. Thanks for the tips. :o

Open throttle, I guess this means you pull on the throttle just before starting. Will try that tomorrow morning.

The last few mornings I haven't been able to start my bike with the choke open or closed unless I kick start it a few times. Seems like a couple of kicks clears out some air or something.

I must have mucked something up while driving with the choke open..

In the morning though <since I've had this bike>, the bike wants to hickup/stall unless the choke is open.

I can't remember the name of the term for breaking without the breaks. I like to ease off the throttle to slow down and not use the breaks until the last second when approaching speed bumps or red lights. In the morning or just after starting in the evenings, if I break this way, the bike will stall. Pretty annoying stalling half way over a speed bump!!

I have to say that the ride is smooth once it gets going. Much better than the second hand JRD manual bike I bought.

The automatic KYMCO "scooter" I used to drive in Taiwan never had a choke control. Started every time for years with the button and some gas. Never a kick start. Not as fast as the bikes here and the wheels are a lot smaller.

  5. I just bought a number 2 (second hand) Mio motorbike. It's an automatic.

Unlike my manual JRD bike, the Mio has a choke control.

The bike wont start in the morning if the choke is closed. If I close it right after starting, it will stall.

So, from what I can tell, I need to drive with the choke open for a while and then close it.

The guy at the shop said it should be closed when driving because if its open it's bad for the bike.

This was tranlated by my TW. I don't understand why.

Today, I took the bike around 30 km at about +- 80km / hour for a trip to the mall.

I forgot to close the choke after starting the bike. The highway is close to my house and I guess I just got caught up in the riding.

The bike seems fine after all the driving with the choke open.

How do you remember to close your choke?!
