  1. 2 qoutes that are made by somebody that dont have a clue what he is talking about.

Actually I think you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.

4X4 simply means all the wheels can be driven, it has nothing to do with having some kind of diff lock, although it would be preferable.

There is many 4X4 cars in the UK that are exactly the same setup as the trucks here, nearly all the Japanese 4X4's in fact (selectable 4 wheel drive, limited slip diff on the rear)

Also, it is common for off roaders to fit aftermarket locking diffs, they aren’t cheap as they cost around 700 quid in the UK. However, it is still often done to modified off road vehicles.

We have alot of the japanese trucks also in Sweden but in general we call 4x2 cars only 4wd. Specifying that the car is 4x4 at least in general talk means that it infact is 4x4. But ok, you might be correct that 4x4 only is another word for 4wd then, but for me and motorpeople in my world back at the homebase a 4x4 should have a diff-lock. Otherwise we just say 4wd.

Aftermarket lock diffs? Common for offroaders?

I grew up on the racetrack basyicly, and i never heard of anybody that did this. Cant be that common. And whats the point of this? Are you saying its very common in the uk for offroaders to buy cars without diff-lock and then rebuild them? To me it is not a small thing to put differential lock on a car that dont have it. What you talk about must be cars that already from the begining are prepared for difflock. You can not put it in any car. alot of changes needs to be done and i doubt that could be done for £700. And if you buy a car with the offroad intetion why would you buy one without difflock in the first place?

I dont know but it sounds a bit stupid in my ears.... :o

  2. I think all this talk on not being 'true' 4x4 is misleading; it seems to imply that 4x4 trucks somehow aren't truly four wheel drive, or 'fake', etc.

You don't NEED permanent 4WD, you just need to be able to engage it when needed, i.e. when leaving the tarmac in slippery conditions. And all of those baby-SUV 'softroaders' with permanent 4WD aren't nearly as good off-road as any 4WD truck.

Indeed a proper diff lock would be nice-to-have, but any 4x4 shop can fit one to any truck.

And then there's chains.. Mud chains will do a lot for your traction when the going gets tough, and aren't expensive.

2 qoutes that are made by somebody that dont have a clue what he is talking about.

First of all, and i have to say i always been a bit shocked why all these 4x2 cars in Thailand are aloud to say they are 4x4 cars, in Europe they are not. 4x4 means each wheel can drive individually. And preferable its steered by automatic. If you are driving offroad and come in to a deep whole with one wheel, your "4x4" is now driving on 2 wheels. In serious terrain 4x2 cars are useless. Sure on a road with a little more wholes than usual roads the 4x2 car works like a 4 wheel drive car. But one wheel blocked and you are sitting in a 2 wheel drive car all of a sudden. Add to that fact that older d-max and tigers only have 2.3 liter engines and you have to be stupid to think you can do offroad driving with this cars. As you say "you just have to be able to engage it when its needed" is exactly what you most of the time not are with 4x2s. When is 4wd needed? As i see it when some wheel is locked, right? Well, thats exactly the situation when a 4x2 turn in to a 2wd car. But it looks nice on the back of your truck "4x4". And for most people it makes the car cooler, and more worth. To me a 4 wd without differential lock is nothing but a 2wd. Except for when you dont need it, then its a 4wd. Pointless.

Indeed a proper diff lock would be nice-to-have, but any 4x4 shop can fit one to any truck.

    :o:D:D

O really?? Excuse me but i dont beleive this at all. Can you explain further how this would be done please? And if it would be possible to put gears in a differntial that dont have it to begin with, it is such a megamecanic story that i seriously doubt "any 4x4 shop" would take on such a job. I think you are a bit out in the blue, quite honestly.

  3. none of these is a true 4x4.

Check to see if any have a locking diff either just rear or front too. the Ford did offer this on the back at one point.

Is that the real truth?? :o

I knew that the toyota hilux and the izuzu d-max only are 4x2s but i just thought that was my European way of seing it since all these cars say 4x4 on the back of them and the drivers also seem to think they drive 4x4 cars. But i realy did not have a clue that the triton also not have a diff lock? Shocking news for me.

So basicly the only real 4x4 pick-up availible in Thailand is some of the Ford Rangers then?? :D

  4. yeah if anyone knows the answer to my question that would be great!

claudefeller bangrak is pretty close, i will look at that one... thx

edit- wow, 2900-6900b/nt, nope that doesn't work for me... man samui hasn't caught on to the wifi thing have they?

Samui has caught on the wifi big time when you have a house here. No problems what so ever to arrange good connections anywhere on the island if you do it in a house you rent and tend to stay in, or use as an office. As for the beach-hotels i agree that its a low percentage that has good connections, but then again i think the main customer at a bechroom on dayily rent, on a tropical island, probably come more for holiday reasons than to surf the internet with a laptop. For the work you just have to concentrate on Chaweng. Or a nice cheap bungalow in banrak without internet but with walkingdistance to internet cafés. Afterall you are not going to work on the beach are you? Thats the obscene scenery you see over in Europe nowadays (summertime), stressed out people with their laptops right on the beach, cant leave work for an hour!! I hope you dont plan to bring that over to the beutiful northcoast of Samui girlx! :o

  5. I love it when people slate Nathon because it means there is even less chance of it turning into somewhere like Lamai anytime soon. If the way the traffic flows is your only barometer for measuring the decentness of your environment then go and live in Swindon (most roundabouts in the world). If however you are more interested in living somewhere that is genuine and friendly, with a real community, great food, the best sunsets I have ever seen and some really nice and cheap housing (bungalow on the beach - 4k a month. No I'm not telling you where!) then come and live in Nathon. Would personally not live anywhere else on the island (oh ok, well if forced and sea view luxury villa would be nice....anywhere....*sigh*)

    Nathon rocks - yeah!

I think you dont have to tell us where. Beach in Nathon????

Come on please, tell us, im burning to know. Its a wallpaper of chaweng beach in your bedroom right?

And some further coment i have to give:

"the best sunsets i have ever seen"

Ok, you have not been around that much. Still i give it nathon have occassionaly nice romantic sunsets. Dont try to enjoy the to close to water though, this time a year thats a security risk.

    "Great food"

Well, you are probably a very good cook yourself. Of the few restaurants in Nathon i find one eatable, and only one dich at that place. Im sure theres more but come on, Nathon is not realy the place you recomend for restaurants or nightlife is it? I always thought nathonlovers loved something i dont see with the place but when you say "great food" i start to wonder?? You have 5 restaurants where of four dont serve 5 % of their meny!!! Get real, please.

    "some realy cheap housing"

For the first time total agreement from me.

You ever thought of why that is??? :o

  6. Class action lawsuit in THAILAND ? thats a new one on Me !

    No one mentioned Thailand !

    Some thoughts that come up:

For a criminal action against an individual the first requirement is that it must be a criminal act in both countries (Thailand and the UK). I do not know the facts but I do not see this.

For a civil procedure, the only Court you can refer to is the Thai Court. You are dealing with a Thai company, not the induviduals.

Coco uses many limited liability companies for different purposes and developments or they act as the agent for another company.

There are 100 million + developments run by 2 million baht limited liability companies. Limited liability means limited to the remaining unpaid amount, if any, of the par values of theirs shares. If the development fails, even through mismanagement (should you be able to proof this) and all the money has gone it is unlikely you get anything back in a civil action from the company or the director(s) should they be personal liable.

As a foreign purchaser in you simply must not pay large amounts in advance before you get what you have agreed!! In Thailand as the purchaser you take the risk.

This bounced cheque, just a guess, maybe he used a cheque from a company they already emptied. :o

Can you clear up your post? Maybe im alone but i dont get want you mean. To me it looks like your saying that if i break the law of Thailand (criminal act, right?) it also must be illegal in the uk??????? Or do you mean the country of origin, in my case Sweden?

Totaly dont get what you are talking about. If you are in Thailand and brake the Thai law its a criminal act, at least i thought so. Am i wrong??

Also let me ad that i think many (i for one) people around samui and also Tv members would like to see highdivers questions answered. I somehow dont see that coming but hope is there everytime a cocothread is on. Smal hope.

And the last time (already mentioned charma-case) did not link to a page where furter information was given. It linked to a place you could join for a fee, witch you did not know how high it would be until you joined, and then get info. Not exactly what we where looking for, was it? Now we are here again and before we get this thread closed lets hope somebody comes in with facts and answers. Highdivers posts say and ask pretty much what we all wait for. News and updates. Anyone??

  7. Whats disc golf? Is that the same thing as frisbee golf? Someone actually set up business doing frisbee golf?

Yes. Disc-golf is also called frisbee golf.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_golf

And to answer your 2nd question: Yes, you better beleive it honey, not only one but they keep doing it over and over again!! And fail, offcourse.

All of them with grand opening articles in Samui express. Most of them done by the same "reporter" so to speak. Theres a reason for that aswell but lets not go to far. Well known facts are useless to print in the forum since everybody know them and also they tend to (rightfully) get threads closed due to forumrules. Anyway, hope i answered your questions. :o

  8. Is this in the same are as where the new disc golf course is? Is that still running too? I haven't seen advertising for it anywhere except for the grand opening party article in the Samui Express

No dont think so. Closed already from the looks off it. At least there dont seem to be any people there.

But the old disc-golf is still up and running i think. And thats been going for some years so that might be a better one to check out.... :D .

Boy are we off topic in this thread?? But at least we have fun! :o

    Mattias ,

If you are talking about the old Disc Golf in Bophut hills, that is also long gone, it is Now a golf course. Bophut hills Golf Course 9 holes.

Ok, thanks for that correction roo, i actually thought they where still doing the disc-golf, but i just pass there occasionaly and see there is people. So what we learned here is that disc-golf buisness is probably not a good buisness-idea on this island then. Allthough im pretty sure within a few months somebody else come with a "new approach" as always. And as always they pay the "reporters" in samui express to print "articles" (all writen by the owners, same as "foodreviews"). And then close down.......Bankrupsy.

How many times we have to watch the story over and over again? It always amuse me though, to hear the newbies with all their new ideas and new approaches and even when you tell them that its all been done before and dont waste your time and money, they still think their "new idea" is sooooooooo good. I been an expats for only 2 years and i think i already seen 50 people take over crap resorts with no potential what so ever, bars that changed owners 10 times/year. You warn them but they keep claiming "i have free food once a week so i make it" or "i put in maitservice, thats going to change it all". Sad, and amusing, at the same time. If some of these newbies only took the time to at least read Koh samui forum in Thaivisa for half a year before coming here, probably alot of the bankrupsy could be avoided.

Mega off topic by now, but people in westernworld reading this thread before coming here and start up discgolf, hope you learned!!!

    :D

  9. Well, there you go, seems impossible to avoid such talk. And people wonder why these threads get closed so quickly.

Yeah, i for one wonder why they have to be closed. Whats the problem with people having a discussion around a newspaper-article? Dont forget that the guy in this particular case is a guy of many peoples interest for different reasons. You dont have to close every thread that becomes interesting, so far its not out of line. And this subject do interest alot of people around here.

  10. I dont know the Englich-names for engine parts so i will call it the "black plastic-pease". The pick with the engine-swap on the blue triton. Why does it say Toyota? They do parts only for the swap or also the original triton have Toyota parts in it?

So, another question to you guys, i was thinking about starting a triton thread but found this one with some trito-experts already so i "highjack" this instead. Now question:

Im looking to buy the Triton plus later this year (still not completely convinced, still have a good eye for the Fortuner but triton seem to fit both me and my wallet better), but i know very little of it. Except for the magazine reviews (wich are all good, and say its the best pickup around pretty much). Ive driven the regular triton many times and i´ve loved it since the first time. The thing why i started to think about the plus is that i live on Samui, very bad roads. I never go offroad but sometimes there is roads (during flooding) where the higher model would be more suitable. I been driving a low car (strada 2.8 gls) for sometime and im mostly ok, but theres that smal idea that it would be a bit more comfortable to have a higher car those few time a year i need it. The thing is, most of our km are on the roadtrips on the mainland. My wife and i are both bikers so in Samui we mainly use the car for the weekly tesco-run and thats it, allthough we now have a baby so the car will be more used in the future. For sure the plus model will suit us better here in Samui, but i guess my real question is: how is it on the roadtrips? I imagine it not being as comfortable as the low model but is it realy bad? Ive driven high tigers on the mainland before and did not like it. The "boat in rough sea"-feeling so to speak. I want to use the Triton plus 3.2 4x4 fourdoorsmodel as a ok island car but most important is still that it do work perfectly smooth on the family roadtrips on the mainland. Any oppinions in this case are welcome. And yes, offcourse im going to try it myself eventually.

Secondly, abit off topic sorry for that, there is somekind of car-auctions in Bangkok where they sell out pretty new cars where the people failed to pay their downpayments. Carcompany take the cars back and auction them out once a week. I´ve heard of some good deals in those places but would like more information.

1:where in Bangkok are they located?

2: How much should i expect to pay on such a market for the car mentioned above not older than 2 years.

3: How long has the Triton plus been around btw? More than a year?

    Thankful for any advise.

  11. Is this in the same are as where the new disc golf course is? Is that still running too? I haven't seen advertising for it anywhere except for the grand opening party article in the Samui Express

No dont think so. Closed already from the looks off it. At least there dont seem to be any people there.

  12. West coast is good for kids swimming around Lipa Nio. Nice and shallow, never seems to get deep.

I agree on lipa noi. A week ago i was there though and there was no beach at all, water was high and rough sea, not swimable at all. But when its good its good. Perfect calm and shallow beach. I you come there and cant swim due to high tide, you go to choeng moen instead. When the westcoast is windy (now) the eastcoast is calm. And choeng mon is also a suitable childrens beach. And might be more fun for the family since there are toys in the water and restaurants and so on. Lipa noi has nothing more than a beach so if you go there remember to bring some snacks and water for the kids and some beers for daddy! :o

  13. Nope, I said I am in a corner. This party was in one location. The fireworks tend to be the entire length of the island. Also, wasn't this party up in the hills? ie raised above the rest of the island? So, kind of similar to the altitude fireworks reach? and no, I didn't say I didn't believe him, I do, just that it was amazing. Sad, but amazing. You forgot mattias, koh Phangan has parties all over the place all month long. I can hear a party quite clearly in the hills behind our house even though it is 4-5 km away, with trees and houses intervening, so yeah, I believe it. It depends on which way the wind is blowing how loud they can get.

Sorry if I took it that you that you were saying Jose was lying, I should know better, English is not your first language and perhaps you don't phrase things the best way. Accept my apologies. :o

Apologies accepted. Have to say i enjoy your explanations about how sound and wind works. :D

You are right, Englich is not my first language and my phrasing sucks. And that may also be the reason why i took your statement: "Honestly, Jose, I did not hear it at all. And I am just down the road from you" , as some kind of doubt from your side. Apologies for that missunderstanding but it is because of my Englich, no hard feelings i hope.

  14. Mattias, you don't hear the boom boom boom of parties? The bass is incredibly loud and it is very easy for such noises to travel over open water when it is clear and calm. Suggest you investigate how sound travels before accusing someone of lying :o

I know exactly how sound travels, thats why i find it very hard to beleive. I did NOT call anybody a liar, i just said i dont beleive it. No accusations so please dont create a fight that is not nessesary at all. But i hope im still entitled to have oppinions, right?

The boom boom boom from a bass is not the same as the fireworks, because the soundsorce dont move (speakers). The reason you hear fireworks from Samui is that they get closer to you after they are in the air. And also i find it a bit interresting that you a few posts away said you did not hear anything and from the looks of it also had some doubt?

Actually, the speed of sound in air (waterlevel, 20 degrees c) is only 343 meters/second. In water the speed (same temperature) is 1482 m/s. So if it was not clear and calm over that open water, but high waves and rough sea instead, you would have at least 3 times bigger chans to play smart with me.

Thanks for the suggestion, i pass it right back to you. :D

  15. We live in Bantai KPG, over 18Km away across the sea, and could hear the music from Bophut thumping away until 3:15am.

My sympathy to any locals trying to get some sleep.

I find this practically impossible to believe.

Yes, as incredible as it seems, sound travels over still water (i.e. damp air) at night like you wouldn't believe. For example, the sound of fireworks in Samui usually arrives here in Bantai about 45-60 sec later.

Even in the middle of the day, we can clearly hear the Lomprayah and Seatran boat engines churning away until they've gone almost half way across the strait, about 4-7Km away.

    jose '-)

Indeed, its true, we can hear the percussion from the fireworks going off in Samui. :o

To me the fireworks-story makes sence. That fireworks that go 40-100 meter up in the air can be heard 15 km from where the go off. Whatever that has to do with a party in Bophut being heard in Ban tai, wich quite frankly i dont beleive at all.

  16. How easy is it to get around Samui and KPN? I don't do motorcycles in any form, so rely on buses and feet in the main. Are there buses that link the beaches in Samui? Is KPN small enough to walk from place to place? Are tuk tuks as big a rip off there than they are here in phuket?

When I first arrived I thought no way in hel_l I'd get on a motorbike taxi but did it once and got a kick out of it. Just tell him no hurry if he speeds and weaves otherwise your chances of surviving drop dramtically. Motorbike taxis aren't as common where I live so what I'll sometimes do is go to the bar next door and offer one of the workers some cash for a ride. Better they get it anyhow.

I'm actually looking forward to going somewhere where there are few motorcycle taxis, whose drivers rank only slightly above slugs in my views. They should be shot on sight here in Phuket.

How about accommodation? Is it easy to pick up reasonably cheap guesthouse rooms, say less than a 1000 a night? Is there plenty of availability at this time of year?

As you know, you get what you pay for so to speak. In Samui in general its no problem to find accomondation for that price. But it is all depending on what you want. In Chaweng nice beach with a mega nightlife and 1000 highclass restaurants the budget is a bit low, and considering that you dont drive yourself i think you can forget Chaweng. 1000 / night would take you up in the mountain somewhere with nothing within walking distance. On the other hand Ban Rak village for instans you get a beachroom for 800, also now in the highseason, but its a smaler village and not as much to choose from, and the beach is not as nice as chaweng but still swimmable.

If you go for the price only there is always Nathon, with no beach, and less than 5 bars and not so much restaurants. Quite frankly i cant see any tourist want to stay there longer than 2 days, except for the prices. You get a good room there for 400/night.

So its the same as all over the world: Where alot of people want to stay, its expensive, where nobody want to stay its dirt cheap. You just have to find your balance between the two. There is alot to choose from all over the island, and 1000/night will give you a nice room also in the highseason.

    Good luck

  17. Actually the WP3 is confirmation that you get a WP.

Speak to your lawyer, do not try to do this by your self.

And the first Non-B you get in Penang is only for 3-months.

When you have the 3-months Non-B, you will get your WP.

Bring your WP to Penang (yes, you must go one more time) and you get your 1-year Non-B (maybe...)

    reason edit: more info

Yeah, i think that is a maybe. After my first 3 month non-b i got just a six month (3 month 2 entries). Probably i would have got a year after that ( or at least a multiple entry non-:o, thats what i was told. Never saw the end of that story since i thought it was easier to use my wife for a non-o.

Anyway, a bit old thread so perhaps mr allen already solved his problems. Otherwise i do highly reccomend the visa section where a guy called lopburi3 knows practicly everything about visa-rules and post regulary.

    Good luck

  18. Dont forget the bike-taxis. They are usable for shorter distance, and most of them are ok priced if you bargain. Otherwise songthaews as already mentioned (also those needs to be bargained, especially if you get one on Chaweng beachroad he will try to overcharge you).

Yellow cabs i keep my little "Thaivisa-campain" and say to every tourist whenever i get the chans: Dont use them!!! Ever!!
