  1. I have commented on this subject before I lived in Pattaya and worked in the property business for the best part of 8 excellent years that turned sour towards the end, reasons being....

I opened a business with the wrong person, someone who wasn't prepared to put any hard work in himself, had a champagne lifestyle and lemonade money(and liked to dip into peoples money he was entrusted with)in the space of 2 years he went from living in a studio apartment to driving a porsche cayenne worth 7 million thb and amazingly lived pretty much rent free in peoples properties he had either promised to sell or rent, he then got sick and left me to run the business all the while he and his girl both drew salaries from the company account and paid off their car finances, basically there was no puttting back into the business just taking out.

also, he was very much into the brown nosing of thai police and the like who thought he was a rich man with his car so liked to be seen with him perhaps with the thought that they could get money from him at some point(little did they know that the car was on finance and the down payment was out of money entrusted to him from soemone who worked in the oil business and very rarely came to pattaya, when he did I was expected to deal with him and say this character was too ill to see anyone)

eventually he wanted me to sign over some land I had power of attorney for that I was selling for at that time a family friend, even if it wasn't a family friend I wouldn't do it so my fate in pattaya was omnimus....

I told him I was resigning and taking a break from Pattaya to size up my future plans and that I would be back to sort things out when I was ready, if you can imagine running a business on your own for the best part of a year I think I was pretty much close to some kind of breakdown....

I arrived back in Pattaya after 3 weeks back in the U.K with my family to finalise the sale of my house, that went through and then I was ready to face this person and tell him it was definetly over between us business wise.

I didn't get the chance to do that unfortunately as whilst I was away he had contacted the police and hatched a plan with some media cretin who is still there today to blackmail me for all I was worth, they issued a warrant on me for some trumped up charges that I had stolen from the company, I was awoken at my friends condo that I was staying at early in the morning and raided by the police like I was some villain on the run and whilst they detained me they were getting together all my bank books/chanote for some land I owed and seized my passport, luckily for me I was not alone in that apartment and my father had travelled back with me otherwise I wouldn't have had the chance to contact my lawyer and deal with this mess...

I got to the station on soi 9 and was met by a swiss character who claimed to be a lawyer who could sort out my problems....all I needed to do was sign over my land I owned to my former business partner, wasn't going to happen, then former business partner shows up and thinks he can get all aggressive with me and threaten me....luckily for me the police officer in charge who had been paid to detain me and saw another side to this 'supposed victim' of my crimes and was not impressed with his act of intimidation and had what I can only describe as some kind of mercy towards me and told him to leave, if he hit me then I was certain to retaliate so best off no altercation happened...my lawyer then showed up, came in and scooped all my documents up that were laid out on the table told them to charge me or drop it there and then, they charged me and I was slung in the cell whilst my lawyer arranged a deal to get me out, cost me 90k thb bail to get out that day so everyone in the police must have had a nice party on that and my lawyer also took his share I would say...still I was now out buy minus a passport as I was told they were preparing the case to go to court and held my passport so I would not dissapear.

I was fortunate to have many friends that stood by me and even some that went to soi 9 and gave character witness statements saying this was all B.S and they were prepared to stand in court on my behalf, some thai some farang all legit business people.

After 6 weeks and several attempts to get the boys in soi9 to tell me if they were going to charge me I one day walked into the station, sat and waited for the arresting officer for a couple of hours who took me into his office and gave me my passport back...my visa had expired and I was now on overstay, I went straight to immigration, showed them my arrest letter and gave them my passport, paid the overstay fine and got 10 day extension, fair play to the man at the immigration he told me to put the letter away and sorted me out there and then.

I won't bore you anymore but that was 6 years ago, yes I have returned to Thailand since...even Pattaya a few times...it was difficult coming back home to the UK and took me a couple of years to get into a decent job and sort myself out which I am now...

I wouldn't change a thing to be quite honest looking back...would have changed lots at the time it was all happening.

Moral of the story...be careful who you get into business with anywhere in the world and be prepared for people who have nothing and never wanted to put any hard work in to go to any lengths to take your things!

Last I heard that he was in a wheelchair....but he was probably on some kind of con!!!

its illegal for a forang to own land here so you dug your own grave IMO and so what lots of people get screwed in business everywhere in world. I have been a couple of times through trusting someone you just move on.

Thank you for quoting the law of Thailand, are you a policeman?

If you actually read my post you will appreciate that it was attempted blackmail with the cooperation of the police as his tool, also the fact had I been a weaker man I would have signed and as you quote 'just moved on'

The laws on owning land through company were not something that was being scrutinised at the time I was involved in real estate, if they were the hundreds of transfers I carried out with buyers over the years would have some kind of issue at the lands office would they not?

Believe me I have moved on, cheers

O yes , If you go into business with a Thai you are asking for BIG trouble and if he/she has thai police connections.. well need I say more

Oh no my friend...he was Australian!

Read your own posts. You said you were cheated by "thai and Falang" and the police "hatched a plan " and raided your condo" Thai or Aussie police?

I went into business with an Australian who brown nosed Thai police, hatched a plan with a danish media mogul in Pattaya who has strong police connections to blackmail me of my property....you said about going into business with thai people which I do not disagree with...hope that clears things up

  4. Pensions are my biggest worry, but working until I am 67 or 68 in the UK, for what in 30 years time will be likely cut to a complete pittance, i'll take my chances here.

I don't think anyone in the U.K could seriously be thinking of living off a state pension when they retire say in 20/25 years time, i'm not anyway, instead I am trying to squirel away as much as I can in savings from salary and performance related bonuses from my work, I am lucky to be in a business that is global....I just pray theres no global meltdown.

  5. what the phnoe number swapper is suffering with is the lonely man syndrome and theres plenty of them in Thailand, some go into their shell even more...others go overboard and try to compensate....i've sat next to people on flights to Thailand and had a chat, been polite but when they start wanting to swap details or arrange a night out I also get a bit freaked out...

lets face it the reason most men go to Thailand is cos they're lonelysad.png

  6. Good news!

All a college has to do is demonstrate that they use some of the materials within the citizenship material. It does not need to use all of it and this seems to cause some confusion.

Sign of the times that cuts mean them charging for a letter but still i am sure it is a weight off your minds! I would suggest a gentle request that you have a copy of the letter sooner in case they change the rules! Our local college seemed reluctant to write a letter much in advance of the ILR application so the college may not oblige!

The LITUK lest is a learning facts exercise and can be daunting. My sister-in-law (also Thai) had the book as reading matter in the downstairs loo! Not sure if it has been put to another, more practical application by now!!

Hopefully by the time you apply for her ILR the crazy delays will have been sorted and you can do a postal application. If not I suggest you bite the bullet and go to a Public Enquiry Office for 'same day' service.

I am not sure where you are but at the moment people are travelling from one side of the country to the other to get to a PEO that is giving better service! From all accounts Belfast is winning at the moment and people are travelling miles to avoid bedlam caused by so called IT issues at Croydon!

Good luck and glad it has sorted itself out!

sadly we are in Essex and Croydon is our 'local' centre....can't have it all can we!

the actual course is run by our local council and not a private college or anything I think so fingers crossed they remain true to their word on producing the letter, I did request it now and she was quite firm in saying to contact approx 3 months before the letter is needed and when we are getting our application ready to be sent out and ensured me that they have the template letter there ready and waiting.

as always we are in their hands till further notice, but for now can relax and enjoy the year!

    Cheers

  7. update: just spoken with the people at the college who inform me as she was basic level on entry and passed at level 1 she has done enough to not have to do the LITUK test and all it will take is around 2 months prior to FLR visa running out we need to contact them to instruct them to issue the letter which will cost £25, attach the letter with her certificate passes to the ILR application.

The lady did say no disrespect but it would be nigh on impossible for my wife to pass the LITUK test and admitted even she would probably struggle, I have seen the book and reckon if I ever suffer from insomnia I may give it a go as a cure!

That course was worth every penny in my opinion.

Many thanks to both BobRussell and 7by7 for their informative replies thumbsup.gif

  8. taking notice of a probably, sour faced, divorced, overweight English woman is probably what you are doing wronggiggle.gif

Very unfair generalisation there. There are some great lasses around just maybe you have a preference for Asian girls, no harm there!

    Probably! whistling.gif

  9. Hello there,

I know this subject has been done to death on here but with the constant changes in out immigration and rules/regs I would like a fresh perspective on my wifes choices for ILR.

she arrived UK October 2010 on fiancee visa

    married March 2011

has FLR which expires July 2013

Went to school and obtained ESOL course skills for life on reading, speaking and listening level 1.

Has been in full time empoyment for last 6 months.

Her English is good in speaking but reading and writing is a bit basic in my opinion, I got her the Thai version of LITUK test book and no doubt she could apply herself if she had absolutely nothing else to do all day but working full time as we both do by the time we get home and eat etc studying is not really going to happen.

So my question is do we persevere with the book or with the level 1 exam she passed before are we half way there and just need to do another ESOL course.

She works with other Thai people and I have of course asked the question as to what routes did they take, she showed me a website for a course that lasts 3 days and will give you the certificates needed to get ILR which is what a couple of them have done last year, does that seem right?

I would like to get the ball rolling sooner rather later to avoid previous experience I had when in the hands of the home office and their lengthy waiting times in limbo.

Regards and appreciate any advice/pointers for next move thumbsup.gif

  10. Service from a cashier ?? They work for peanuts there, can't expect too much, just hope to get through as quick as possible. My family shops at ex-carrefour, now bigC extra, because it holds most of the stuff we need, sometimes lotus on north road (nua) as well. Specialties from foodland, alcohol from best, some more exotic stuff such some spices from avenue. Day to day small stuff from local market or 7-11.

    Posted with Thaivisa App http://apps.thaivisa.com

nobody forces that cashier to work there...

  11. I went there 3 or 4 times and ordered their 129 baht daily special. The last time I went I paid for my meal and when my change was brought to me there was a note with it " My boss says if you don't order a drink please don't bother to com back."

    The guy's a fraud.

    ha ha...basil fawlty in Jomtien...

  12. stop being so tight...get your bourbon out and have a party, share and share alike....be as welcoming as they would be if it were you just turning up on their door...heck even offer them your bed...

and whilst you are at it whats your husband say on the matter?

  13. I fancy a loan....and you don't even know me nor does your wife....

But I will wager my left testicle that I would pay it back before your tiraks friend does giggle.gif

  14. Wow - a really original thread about Thai driving standards. Never seen that before.

Fact is, there are variants of the 'types' mentioned by the OP in most western countries in which I've driven, and whatever their faults, the Thais don't display the self-righteous aggression which characterises most drivers in the UK, who all seem to think to think that they are wonderful and lapse into paroxysms of rage at the slightest perceived fault of others around them.

Bangkok excepted, I find driving in Thailand less stressful than driving in the UK

bad drivers are everywhere especially Thailand but I do agree with your statement about driving in the U.K especially greater London where there are those of asian and african origin are prevelant, I had the misfortune to drive through Ilford just outside the east end on a Sunday the other week and it kind of reminded me of driving in Thailand, lots of people muscling for their spot but refusing to acknowlege there were others on the road who had the right of way!

  15. I applied for a fiancee visa after knowing my now wife for 4/5 months and they rejected it and we appealed and got it over turned.

The reason for the rejection was the proof of relationship so I went back to Thailand and got more pics, more stamps in passport and a good 6 months later she was in the U.K. lots of waiting and the unknown which strengthened the relationship and made it what it is today as it showed commitment from both sides and if it was going to fail then within those extra 6 months it would have done.

If my wife was pregnant within 2 months of me knowing her I would have run a mile, as for the hating it back home in the village well I really do feel sorry for her (NOT) you need to man up and be a bit strong towards her in my opinion as all this wrapping her in cotton wool will only set a rod for your own back later in life.

a few things that come to mind are, you are just back from spending 2 months together both on holiday with nothing to do but enjoy yourselves and shag, go for dinner, shag a bit more etc....been there done that myself and yes you get the blues when you come back big time....

slow it down a bit eh....get back out to Thailand and let her know that its going to take about a year for her to finally get here...see how she accepts that?

it may be shorter than a year but in a country where goal posts are contantly moved and nothing works 100% if you tell her she'll be here in 3 months she will expect to be here then...you tell her 1 year and its done in 6 months then you've both had a result!

  16. hello micky, when I travelled back with my missus recently to LHR on EVA air at the check in desk she was asked for her residence card etc not only upon check in but at the gate so I wouldn't take the chance mate.

If you have a credit/debit card from the UK theres nothing stopping you dealing with a company over here for your flights... going to PM you the number of a travel agents I use that are pretty competetive at times.

    cheers
