  1. Some of my wife's friends living in the UK are now reporting that people have been denied employment there despite having ILR. She has been told that either a UK passport is required or have to be an EU national.

First I have heard of this so asking if anyone else has heard of such. Thanks for reading.

  2. I live near a crossing. Horns are blasted by the train every time.

No sign of that here though.....and the bus driver couldn't see...I'm now 90 % sure of that.

Passengers screamed...he stopped and just before impact he tried to engage reverse.

Not sure why you are so convinced he couldn't see.

I'd wager the driver didn't even look. He didn't want to wait for the first white pickup already on the crossing forcing it off the road so easy to imagine he didn't want to wait for the second car to cross either and forgot about a simple look to his left.

  3. Despicable behavior and this from a school. If I had children on that school, I would find them another one. The ignorance is beyond belief.

Although I don't necessarily agree with forcing her to undergo testing! I can see the Thai logic in it. Aides takes months to show up in the blood. The girls parents are both afflicted with it so their is a better chance she has caught this disease from them. In school, children are in such close quarters with other students that it is more than just a slight chance that disease can be caught by another student if she has it. But here is the Thai logic. Schools worry more about what parents say than anything. They want parents to keep their kids in that school. Parents that know the girls family all have aides are probably threatening the director about removing their kids from class. The parents probably aren't educated about aides enough anyways. But the director is demanding this because he has had it requested by other students families. Being this is Thailand, ignorance brings about fears and their fears take hold to make unreasonable demands. Just remember how one tambon tried to relocate a small community full of aides victims before.
You do realise HIV can only be passed through intimate sexual contact or blood to blood contact don't you? So rather than "more than just a slight chance that disease can be caught by another student" the chance is just about zero in normal day to day life.
Of course i am aware of how this disease is passed on. If you actually read my post and understood it you would see that the first thing I said was I didn't agree with the testing. But just as I am aware of how aides is transmitted, Thais are not taught about this. They may know the name of it but don't know details concerning transmitting it. I was merely offering an opinion based on observations of how schools react to parental pressure.
Of course he read your post and was responding to your claim there is more than a slight chance to catch HIV if she is +ve. There isn't, the chance is so remote as to be zero.

He is right, as when a school has an epileptic child. All teachers and students need to be aware of the condition and understand what to do in the event of a fit. The teachers and other students need to understand what to do in the event this child fell down and blood was coming out as extra precautions would be needed . If a second test confirmed she was clear, there would be no need for extra training. If it confirmed she had it, all of the children and teachers need to wear gloves and be a bit more careful in the event of an accident.

She's already been tested and is negative for the disease.

I would expect any educated person to wear gloves when treating someone with an open wound regardless of their known or not HIV status.

  5. Years ago only 2 superpowers were fighting the space race. Nowadays there are numerous private companies involved in space tourism/commercial satellite launches so I don't think it too unrealistic to see an earth orbit commercial space station accepting tourists happening in my lifetime.

Agree interplanetary travel is entirely different, requiring huge resources and probably only realistic with the collaboration of several Govts.

As for Branson running out of money? The rate he's winning UK NHS contracts he will only get wealthier! :)

  6. ".....excessive pumping of water from the river to feed second crop rice farming was blamed for the sharp drop in the level of water in the river."

It is blindingly obvious when water has been pumped and rice paddy prepared but for some reason nothing seems to be done about it. If there is not enough water then measures have to be taken to ensure critical supplies but for whatever reason those with the power to do so seem unwilling to act.

  7. Gary Dahl became a Millionaire in the mid 70's with the pet rock idea. He wasn't a Thai, and the customers were not Thai's, unbelievably (and disappointingly for ThaiVisa members) they were Farangs 1.5 million were sold @ 4 USD each

Wish I could come up with an idea like this, this Doll idea is just another one of the craze items that will net the creators Millions and Millions of Baht. Good luck to them.

Americans rioted for the right to buy a dolly !

Be careful where criticism is directed.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabbage_Patch_riots

But - Americans didn't believe they were alive or supernatural. They were jokes or cute things for fun.

This is creepy when people believe those dolls are actually inhabited by a former deceased baby.

Do you actually know any Thais who think this way? I don't.

One of wifey's friends does. She is an incredibly hard working woman, runs a hotel and also landscape gardening business. Great fun to be with but this last year has carried this doll around everywhere she goes. She talks to it and really does seem to believe it has some sort of spirit.
  8. It would be helpful if they mentioned if it was made of aluminum or not. The arc in the metal may indicate it came from an engine cowling. A malfunctioning engine would not necessarily cause the crash to happen at that location.

That is similar to what I thought when reports of an explosion being witnessed came to light soon after it disappeared. An emergency change of course and maybe a catastrophic loss of cabin pressure that incapacitated the crew.

The Qantas A380 had a major engine explosion and still kept flying.

Anyway, I'm speculating, something I try not to do :)

Just a thought, maybe it's from the AirAsia Airbus that went down just over a year ago.

    I'll shut up now.

  9. I dont mind the whole bribe thing, as long as they are polite and nice about it, the benefit is the things i can get away with on the roads in TH compared to the nanny states

advantages and disadvantages go hand in hand

The whole bribe thing is a cancer on society.

My wife's brother was killed by a drunk driver who paid his way out of any responsibility.

Instead of gloating how you get away away with things on Thai roads how about driving within the law?

I agree wholeheartedly. If nobody of paid bribes, corruption wouldn't exist. Sure you can get away with things, but compulsory helmet laws aren't there because somebody, somewhere decided it would be fun. Compulsory seatbelt laws aren't there because somebody, somewhere thought up of a way to crease your nicely ironed clothes. Speed limits aren't there because somebody, somewhere thought it would be a good idea. I could go on, but I'm sure you get the picture. All of these things have been proven in numerous studies in numerous countries - all such studies being totally independent of each other - that some things reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on the roads.

I remember when front seatbelt laws were introduced in England in the early 80's and how inconvenient it was. I remember when back seatbelt laws were introduced in Victoria Australia in the early 90's I remember when the speed limit was reduced from 100 to 75 on the Westgate bridge in the mid 90's and how inconvenient it was. Within 6 months though in all cases I saw the numbers of people being killed or seriously injured fall by enough to convince me it was worth a bit of inconvenience, and by that time I'd got over the inconvenience anyway and it was second nature. Even now, 8 years after leaving Aus I still always put my seatbelt on.

Say what you will about nanny states, some laws are there for very, very good reasons. This goes from not being on the road in an incapable state or dangerous vehicle to sending little boys up chimney stacks. If you want to live in absolute law and order free chaos, there are a few countries in Africa where you can do so to your heart's content, but you have to remember that everybody else there can do it as well and there will be no nanny state to protect you and your family.

The best way to end such an argument is to ask a simple question; if your house is broken into, if you are mugged or even robbed at gunpoint, if you or someone close to you is beaten up, if your car is stolen, if you see someone being assaulted, if you accidentally find out someone is grooming children for sex, if you witness a murder, if - you get the picture. Who ya gonna call? If the answer is the police, then please tell me why you think that you are such a special snowflake that you can choose which laws do and don't apply to you. Unless you want to be a hermit, you choose to be a part of society, and if you do that you are choosing to live by the laws you agree with as well as the ones you don't in that society.

Thats cool and all but ill continue driving how i want and enjoying and taking full advantage of the corrupt system in Thailand, if you dont like it then leave :)

Let me tell you a little about what happened to my wife's brother.

He was helping at the scene of an accident when a drunk driver ploughed into him dragging him along the road under the car. Despite horrific injuries he didn't die immediately but after a week in ICU.

My in-laws were left the hospital bill after the drunk driver paid off the appropriate people who I'm sure were nice and polite when they received their take.

What do you suggest I tell my Thai in-laws as they hate corruption? Where should they leave to?
