  1. Why not just build the fence leaving the 1.2 meter access? Surely you won't suffer for it in any way. On the other hand making enemies with neighbors is a sure way to increase your suffering, especially if you intend to stay on the property.

    Makes absolute common sense.

This is why I would hate to have a farang as a neighbour.

Someone that would complain that my dog is barking after moonrise, my rose bush is protruding 1 inch over his land, my fence is of the wrong colour, no thanks.

Where I live, my neighbours and I, each short cut over our lands, my dogs bark, their dogs bark, no problems.

This is Thailand and in this country they fully understand the word, compromise.

Keep it in mind; it may save you lots of agro later on.

It's not just farangs here in Thailand that get blinkered when it comes to property lines and rights. It happens the world over.

One of my friends here in Thailand, a farang, regularly gets a complaint from his Thai neighbour when his wife(Thai) waters their garden and some of the water happens to spray into their, the neighbours, (unused) rice paddy!

One of our neighbours(Thai) complained about a small tree overhanging our wall and so overhanging their rice paddy. The fact their rice paddy had encroached on my wifes land was neither here nor there.

  2. Most electricians can move a phone line if it is already connected to your house.

When building our home our phone line was preinstalled by the electrician we hired so that the phone company(TT&T) only had to connect their wire to the box on the wall.

Probably cheaper and quicker than having to deal with TT&T.

  3. I am tempted to agree with Beardog on this one.

When my wife bought some land a few years ago I was concerned about access as a couple of the neighbours used to cross to access the paddy they rented.

After a visit to the Amphur they told us that unless such access was written on the chanote for my wifes land then they had no legal right of access.

  4. I have sent items such as yours by ordinary mail and they have been delivered tax free.

I would be more worried about them going missing to be honest as theft does take place in the postal service.

When I have sent items such these I always declare only a very low item and hope for the best.

Sending to the UK everything has always got through ok.

  5. Noticed it a couple of times myself but always seem to be on the wrong side of the road headed back to Kan!

Thanks for the report, may drop in sometime. How's the prices?

The price is on the igh side, 300 Baht for a beef steak.

After w visit the the local hairdresser shop in Tha Leua my wiwfe took us to a place she knows in one of the back streets of Tha Leua, it is called "Hi Beefsteak and Coffee". You get a thin beaf steak with some mixed sallad and a few fries for 59 Baht. Not a big portion but sufficient for a lunch

Thanks for the reply. Might try it and have a look out for some decent live bands too.

The steak and fries for 59 bht is quite popular all over, there is a nice one close to where we live in Phanomtuan although I always have to order an extra plate of fries to satisfy myself.

  6. What happens when the 'anus bomber' comes along? Are you going to happily bend over and wave goodbye to your dignity?

You missed the ARSE BOMBER link above. And the answer to your question is no, but I might bend over and kiss it goodbye. If there's time, of course.

I'll say it again: Security is only as good as the people implementing it. More technology isn't going to help. Do you really think the people at the airport are going to receive the training and support they need to do this properly?

If anyone is to probe the recesses of my inner sanctum I for one expect the highest of standards and hopefully a warm finger.

  7. On my first ever trip to Kanchanaburi I did a day tour with one of the local companies. Hired a couple of guides with a Land Rover and did an elephant ride, raft trip, hel_l Fire Pass and a trip back to Kan on the train from SaiYok.

I now live here so must have made an impression on me!

Erewan Falls are really nice but not sure how much water is in them now as it's the dry season.

River Kwai Hotel on the main road through town is good and there are several good guest houses on the tourist strip by the river. A friend of mine recommends the 'Noble Knight' after his stay there.

Local tours are easy to arrange at the hotels/guesthouses and pretty good value now as to be honest they seem pretty desperate for the business here.

  8. I'd say there is a fair amount of racism here. Anyone remember the 'Darlie' (brown toothpaste) ad?

A child has a balloon but loses hold of it. A black man manages to rescue the balloon and hands it to her. At that point the child's mum rushes over with a terrified look on her face and pulls the child away. The black guy looks very sad and goes and lies down on a bed that is actually a giant toothbrush.

The closing slogan is "Darlie, black but good!'.

    Pretty racist in my book.

Actually it was the Double Lotus brand, herbal toothpaste. The point was that the color of the herbal toothpaste is reddish-brown and different from the rest, but it's supposed to be "good for you". Therefore, the ads tries to say, "Do not judge the book by the cover" sort of thing. Well, as a Thai, this is what I perceive to be the message.

FYI, the Darlie toothpaste used to be called "Darkie" with a black-face minstrel logo many many years ago, but was changed after an American company bought it. Difficult to explain to the shareholders, I suppose. I would think how Darkie toothpaste was promoted was much more racist.

Took this pic a few weeks ago in Bangkok. :)

    In a museum?

    That packaging looks decades old.

Thinking about it, maybe a mom and pop store, shelf life of years!

  9. I am increasingly suspicious of developing countries that claim that nuclear energy is the only solution to their energy supply - I think weapons grade radioactive material is a more likely objective seeing as most nuclear power stations are uneconomical when you consider the waste disposal etc.

I am more than inclined to side with this view especially with the rumours of the Burmese/North Korea reactor tieup.

Absolute BS om both counts... and will cite North Korea's efforts to get a "big bang" not so a long ago....more of a big fizzle...LOL

Converting and enriching commerical grade uranium to weapons grade material is a little more involved than a high school chemistry class Einstein... :D .....North Korea havent got it right, either have Iran....

If nuclear weapons was the objective they would be buying weapons grade material from the former soviet republics and saving themselves a lot of hassle of building of commerical power plant.... :)

Scaremongering connecting commerical nuclear power stations to nuclear weapons... :D ....you will scare all the OAP's on TV and they will all move from Pattaya... :D

Whilst DPRK 2006 test was widely reported a failure the 2009 test was thought more successful, maybe even as big as the Hiroshima bomb.

Their nuclear bomb programme shows how difficult it is for an isolated country to develop their own weapon but it can be done and it will not stop others trying.

These days it seems almost economically justifiable for a developing nation such as Thailand to start it's own nuclear power station program. The cost is enormous not just for the construction but also the management, maintainance, eventual decommissioning and the safe storage of nuclear waste.

  11. Why all get scared and think that coup is in progress.

They have it nearly every 6 years so here in Thailand That the same like buying a news paper and you read the same story's again.

They have it nearly every 6 years so here in Thailand

That is not true. Last coups: 1992, 2006.

1998/1999's was cancelled as there was a particularly good run of Thai soaps on then.
