  1. The examples are in truth both symptoms of the same problem - Though the OP twists the point of focus onto the Foreigner.

The issue is not hypocrisy on the part of the foreigner(s) but the fact that the actions of both the foreigner and the Thai in the example given are dishonest.

Those two dishonest acts exist independently of each other, neither is a justification of the other.

There are however some similarities in group behavior; Thais over charging foreigners and justifying that on the basis of (whatever their justification is) and other people (Thais included) breaking copyright on the basis of (whatever their justification is).

And it is in this justification of one's actions where those actions are harmful to others that is a commonality.

Dodgy ground really, morality and ethics being such a difficult subject for so many in Thailand.

And if I might add. All my software, music, movies and whatever media I have at home and/or on my computer is fully legal.

mines all illegal saved a fortune

  2. The price should approach the marginal cost for mining the stuff. What is the marginal cost for mining an ounce of gold? Probably about $50 would be a wild guess.

The marginal cost, IS the supply curve. If you are assuming a fairly competitive markets, Long Run prices should be based around the supply curve. The rest (ie $900) is sentiment.

that would be a wild guess

all depends on the extraction process heap leach / ball mill / slag reduction / cost of fuel /cost of labour local / cost of ex pats / flights food accomodation etc etc

last mine i worked in ghana mining and prossesing cost's were $ 199.00 per troy ounce while gold took a dip to $249.00 but that was in 1999.

today i'm on a new mine just setting up so wouldnt know the cost for troy ounce production, but behind assembly by 3 months and already $200,000,000 investment to date. would guess at around $ 400.00 + per troy ounce production

as for buying gold at todays rates pure madness

  3. Dave,

This all sounds very strange. If the visa has been refused, your g/f must be given a notice explaining the reasons why. Indeed, if you have been living together for two or more years, she should also get the right of appeal. That you have not lived in the UK for 15 years has no bearing on the consideration of the application.

I'd send the embassy an e-mail ([email protected]) asking:-

    1. If the application has been approved, why isn't there a visa in the passport?;

    2. If it has been refused why she hasn't been given a refusal notice?; and

    3. If the embassy has no record of an application having been made, why hasn't the application centre passed it on?

I'd then back this up with a phone call on Tuesday.

From the circumstances you have described, I see no reason why your girlfriend's application should be refused, especially as you've been together for six years, so if it has been, don't just meekly accept it, but fire off representations to the embassy.

    Scouse.

    thanks scouse.

just been talking to the g/f not to easy as i'm in mali at the moment and she's up in the village outside nong khai (bad reception) seems they required reason to return to thailand <deleted> is that. she has houses land and 2 sons 17/19 she says they needed birth certificates for both the son's is this normal.

have tried your web site but it doesnt list services available, if i have to use a visa agency i will, could you pm me with details of costs etc and any other information that would be required to secure her visa.

  4. g/f of 6 yrs just got the passport back yesterday (no visa) no reason for visa rejection

thought i had all the documents bank statements (6 months ) letter of introduction stating that i would pay all costs while she was visiting u/k letter from my employer stating lenght of service (10 years)

copy of all my visas to and from thailand for the past 6 years, proof of visits to kenya / tanzania / by my g/f to visit me at work.

original documents for her lands and houses.

photographic evidence of our time together

reason for going to u/k was/is for my daughters 18th birthday in june (only wanted to go for 8 days) i work 10 weeks on 4 weeks of all my leave is spent in thailand, we even have a house in pattaya in my girlfriends name.

i dont know but being not normally resident in the u/k since 1993 would this have any bearing on her visa rejection.

what can i say she's gutted

  5. Legal tips for foreigners has a good presenter :cheese:

The guy doesn't speak one word English i think.

yes he does (must say sorry 20 times each instalment)

  6. 555

Surely you can't be serious in posting this poll. Who's gonna divulge that kind of info on a web forum? I admit people could answer the poll anonymously.

    Nice try though.

Your top layer isn't very high though. I mean that's about the price of a semi-detached house in the south of England. I think you could have gone to, say, 140 million Baht.

Well I htink our house in London suburb, inside M25, on Underground line is 4 bed semi and worh currently 25 million baht based on GBP 1.00 = Baht 86

got a couple of 100k stashed under the bed PM me i'll accept that rate no problem

    SOME GREAT QUESTIONS

    2) If a person owns a piece of land do they own it all the way down to the core of the earth?

Sorry to be bore #2 but in Malaysia you do which is why road tunnels in KL are almost invariably under existing roads so they don't have to buy the land off the property owners above.

bore # 3 some parts of ireland to

  11. Lesson to be learned

First-year students at Texas A&M's Vet school were receiving their first

anatomy class, with a real dead cow. They all gathered around the

surgery table with the body covered with a white sheet.

The professor started the class by telling them, 'In Veterinary Medicine

it is necessary to have two important qualities as a doctor: The first is

that you not be disgusted by anything involving the animal body. For an

example, the Professor pulled back the sheet, stuck his finger in the butt of the

dead cow, withdrew it and stuck it in his mouth.

'Go ahead and do the same thing,' he told his students. The students

freaked out, hesitated for several minutes. But eventually took turns

sticking a finger in the anal opening of the dead cow and sucking on it.

When everyone finished, the Professor looked at them and said, 'The

second most important quality is observation. I stuck in my middle finger and

sucked on my index finger. Now learn to pay attention. 'Life's tough,

it's even tougher if you're stupid.'

  12. Unless you are going to be out in the jungle at night your risk of contacting malaris is EXTREMELY low. Most of the preventive drugs will not in any case work in this part of the world, altho docs back ghome -- and even expert web sites like the CDC -- may suggest otherwise.

My advice is to take nothing and just try to minimize mosquito bites via long sleeves and insect repellent. This will also protect against Debnngue which unlike malaria you can quite easily get, even in the cities.

If you do want to take anything, doxycline makes the most sense and is readily available over the counter in Thailand, Cambodia and Viet nam. Personally I wouldn't bother.

Even if you do take doxy, still need to try to prevent mosquito bites. Doxy will not protect against dengie (nothinbg will other than avoiding being bitten).

It also will not protect against Japanese b encephalitis, another mosquito borne disease. Jap B is osty prevealnet in rural areas. there is a vaccine for it.

A very sound posting in my opinion. What happens if somebody does feel they are in the early stages of malaria. What should they do? and what is the prognosis?

doxycline has very bad side effects in some people (painfull puss filled blisters between the digits) unless prescribed by a doctor stay well clear!

if you cover up well you should be ok

if you feel the need to take proflacsis be warned it doesnt stop malaria only lessens the severity of it only cure is huge doses of quinnine or herbal drugs like artesunate (china )

believe me when i say cover up you would'nt want malaria ! first time knocks you sideways for a week and you think the world is falling out of your ar#e

  13. fans will turn on him

without doubt the most fickle unloyal fans in the world

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

    u must be a mackem

Kevin Keegan, hey? You couldn't make it up! The feeling of adrenaline I felt when a colleague broke the news to me surged through my body like a David Ginola through-ball.

And that surprised me. Thoughts of Didier Deschamps and Gerard Houllier were what had got my blood pumping. Continental coaches with bags of European experience. Keegan? Pah, it will never work I thought. The game has moved on since Keegan led us all on a merry waltz up the Premier League over ten years ago.

It took today's announcement to realise I had let my brain rule my heart for too long. Keegan. His name in the same sentence as 'Newcastle' causes goosebumps to break out over my arms. Just say it. Keegan. Magic.

The quality of players he brought to our doorstep were simply magnificent. You didn't need bags of European experience to know that Ginola could cross a ball, that Asprilla had an extraordinary gift, that Peter Beardsley could shimmy like Travolta or that Alan Shearer was a bit handy in front of goal.

Allardyce had bags of experience. So did Souness and Dalglish. It got us nowhere. What they lacked, Keegan had in abundance.

It was inspiration, pure and simple. He could inspire. Players got excited, fans got excited, the media got excited, and the opposition fans got excited. They were exciting times.

Can he excite us again? Who knows? But the thought of going into the unknown is ultimately more exciting than the thought of a team led by the likes of Harry Redknapp and Mark Hughes. These are good managers. But they don't cause the adrenaline to flow.

The sight of Robert Lee scoring a hat-trick of headers against Antwerp away from home, Shearer scoring a hat-trick in 13 minutes against Leicester, Beardsley unleashing a 30-yard thunderbolt into the top corner against Norwich, Manchester United humiliated 5-0 at home, and Andy Cole scoring 41 times in his first season in the Premier League. A better player when he went to Manchester United? Never.

And Ginola's volley against Ferencvaros? Despite what Match of the Day thought, Zola and Beckham never scored better goals than that one in the 1996/97 season.

There will probably be accusations of Keegan being tactically naive floating around on the web right now, but how tactically naive can you be by finishing 2nd in the League? How bad can your defence be when you only concede two more goals than champions Manchester United in 1996?

If having a 'scientific approach' to football is hoofing the ball 50 yards to a big man, I'll take tactical naivety everytime.

It's been a long time since the feelgood factor was at St James' Park. It's been all downhill ever since Craig Bellamy scored that sensational winner against Feyenoord in 2002.

Yet it has taken Keegan just 30 seconds to make me anticipate, rather than dread, the rest of the season.

Welcome Back King Kev. You've been missed.
