  1. I just reported maxnet's IP hijack to Google by using a ssh-tunneled proxy in order to avoid the redirect. Google's IP hijacking report pages can be found by searching "Report IP problems google" woth google itself. I suggest you do the same, as I'm sure folks at Google will have far more weight on the matter than individuals calling to maxnet's tech support and I reckon they will not be very happy by anybody degrading the level of their service.

Unfortunately I don't think Google has much pull over here in Thailand. Net neutrality laws here? :)

  2. Wow.

And just today Maxnet started advertising outside my condo as they finally have service here, and I was thinking about switching from True which has actually been VERY good to me. No way would I even consider it now.

I would have been going with Premier, anybody notice this with Premier or are you all on Indy?

  3. Therms with Thrue? My DSL modem never put out that much heat. :)

True DSL is fine for me, but others seem to have issues now and again (and again, and again). The highest speeds may not be available where you live.

Maxnet Premier is supposed to be good.

It mostly comes down to what's available in your building. True is likely available, but Maxnet is hit or miss.

  4. It also says on the front "MP3", but nobody at Toyota can tell me how. There is no (or I can't find) audio in socket.

I am currently assuming that I need to find an MP3 Cassette Adaptor, which I'd have thought would be quite common here (Pattaya) but I haven't found one yet. Anyone know where? I can get one on Ebay easily enough but then there's delivery.

you just burn mp3's to a cd-r, pop the cd into your system, and you're good to go.

  5. Are you running Vista?

On my Vista x64 partition the Windows folder is about 20GB with 81k files.

XP x86 the Windows folder is 1.8GB with 6k files.

Did you try to drag the Program Files folder to D, or did you cut and paste it? If you did a cut n paste, I'd move the files back as you'd have broken a lot of apps that way.

  6. Can't IPCop be configured to lookup host names from your DNS server? I find it's more of a headache to change host names when staff come and go. Something like acmewks%asset_tag% or acmenb%asset_tag% can stick with the workstation for its life, plus you know which computer it is just by looking at the asset tag or serial number. Every time you swap a computer for repair or replacement you don't need to mess with the host name. You also run into the issue of logs pointing to host names that don't exist anymore if you change them based on the person whose desk it happens to be at for the moment.

Ughhh, too much pointless work for me. On a small network (<10 workstations) it shouldn't be too much work though.

  7. If you want to dual boot, in the betas you were able to enter Custom (advanced) installation and choose a partition you'd already created to install Win 7 onto. I haven't installed the RC yet, but you can start the installation to see if it's still possible.

  8. Agree about the print server. You can pick up a laser MFP (print/fax/copy/scan) from Brother and other makers for around 8k, from HP for about 15k. They all include or have an model available with a built in print server.

As far as the router/modem, I found the Zyxel that True gives to customers be lacking in stability. If you get something similar from TT&T, you can set the modem to bridge mode and connect a Linksys WRT54GL router to it (The L stands for Linux). This would be fine for a SOHO environment. You can then replace the stock Linksys firmware with the tomato firmware (free open source firmware which you can download) which is very stable, more configurable, has more options, and is better at handling the higher number of connections you will have from 7-16 computers than either the standard Linksys firmware or the modem you'll receive from TT&T. A WRT54GL is around 2,500 baht I believe. The network connections in this case would be Phone Line -> TT&T Modem | TT&T LAN port -> Linksys WAN port | Linksys LAN port -> switch.

  9. If you're going to expand up to 16 computers, you'll be looking at 20 - 24 ports. Since switches usually come with 8 / 16 / 24 ports, you can get a 16 port now and uplink an 8 port in the future. You will need 16 ports now rather than 8 as you need at least 1 port for your internet gateway, and more for printers, servers, random connections and trouble shooting.

Best to run ethernet cable (Cat 5a) instead of going wireless as the wireless will involve ongoing maintenance and expense, making the TCO much more than simply running ethernet as labor is so cheap here. Wireless leaves you more open to any security vulnerabilities that may crop up with the encryption being used, which is part of the maintenance as you would need to update/patch the access point and each node on your network. Best bet is to run two ethernet cables to each station, and use pairs on the second cable for phone access. Ethernet cabling has 4 pairs, so you have extra if a pair should get damaged. You could run a single ethenet line if you're going with VOIP phones as they tend to have a second ethernet port to bridge a computer to the network.

  10. And Atom CPU's don't have VT, and P4's don't have VT, and...

Anyone who doesn't know what VT is won't know what XP mode is all about anyway, and probably won't even know it exists.

And I honestly have no idea why some people are seriously bugging out in this thread. :)

Ahhh.. khao jai. Even more lolz worthy now. :D

  11. I've been receiving some SMS spam recently, usually in Thai, that gives instructions to enter a certain number (or send an SMS) to be entered into a contest to win something. Usually they are 30 baht or so per entry, don't remember what the prizes were, but today when I checked my balance AIS included the same type of gambling in English to win a Honda Jazz "with Doraemon" (some kids cartoon?). "More Vote! More Chance!"

Before I assumed the money was just going into some shaddy spammers pockets, but this is from AIS (yes, I know, one in the same ).

How are they getting around the gambling laws?

  12. The genius management of True is at it again.

First they come up with the lovely idea of taking away about 15% of the channels when upgrading from Silver to Gold, then charging you 80% of the silver price to get that 15% back with Platinum service. :)

Now they decide they aren't screwing us hard enough, so they tell us to bend over, grab those ankles, and SMILE!

  13. I know discussing moderation is against the rules, so I'm not going to link to the thread (which I hadn't even posted in BTW), but please bear with me as I think this should be addressed.

A certain thread in the internet/computer forum was, from my point of view, hijacked by a mod and then closed several posts later due it being off topic and getting close to being against the rules (due to the content of the mods posts). :)

It wasn't my thread so I didn't want to email support or admin about it (none of my business) but in general I think a review of appropriate behavior with regards to hijacking and closing threads is in order.

    over and out.
