  1. samung syncmaster 226wb 55 watt according to the manual

    - HP w2408h 130 watt according to the manual

    - that leaves 900 - 130 -55 = 715 watt for the computer (i believe it has a 450 w power supply)

I think this 900 watt from a UPS is a bit fantasy. Imagine, that is 70 Amps at 12 V. And that from such a small battery. My guess is that above 20 amps the voltage start to drop considerably. 300 W would be more realistic and only for a short time.

You got already 240W as mentioned above. Don't forget these 3 harddrives + 3 CDROMS. Maybe you just draw too much power.

You really only expect 300W from a 900W UPS? These things must be super cheap. APC's I've used had no problem providing the advertised power draw, though for a very short period of time as can be expected.

The computer mentioned is probably not drawing much more than 150W - 200W at idle, which should bring the total draw in under 400W. The batteries should last over 20 minutes, if it's not complete crap and doesn't overheat first.

  2. Only you can decide if anything is worth it.

If you want to know the screen areas for the monitors you have selected, this site has a tool that computes them for you.

    http://www.displaywars.com/23-inch-16x9-vs-26-inch-16x10

    23" 16x9 display has a screen area of 226"

    26" 16x10 display has a screen area of 304"

The 26" you linked to has built in speakers, which you may or may not want, and has an HDMI input while the 23" doesn't.

If you let us know what you intend to use the monitor for, we could probably help you better.

If you want to play games, 1680x1050 with a 2ms response might be a better solution than a 1920x1200 with 5ms.

If you want to watch HD movies or TV shows, or play games from a PS3 or xbox 360, you'd want a 1920x1080 (16x9) display with at least 1 HDMI input.

If the above two activities aren't a priority, then the largest screen in your budget at the aspect ratio you prefer (16x9 or 16x10) would be best, regardless of response time or resolution.

If you are ordering online, I still suggest you get to the store to see the difference between 16x9 and 16x10 displays before making a purchase.

  3. Anyone know where the Din Daeng Flats are, respective to this article:

Protesters drive truck with gas cylinders into compound of Din Daeng flats

Residents of Din Daeng flats were terrified when protesters drove a truck fuelled by NGV gas into the compound.

The truck uses several NGV cylinders and the protesters shouted that the flat residents should leave immediately, prompting speculation that the protesters would explode the gas tanks.

  4. I have a T220. There is a sticker placed on the box by JIB, who is either the retailer or distributor, with 3-Y on it, so I assume it is a 3 year warranty. The warranty card that came with the monitor has both Thai and English, and states a 3 year warranty for CRT and LCD.

You realize the monitors you are looking at are designed with HD TV resolution which is 16:9 instead of 16:10 that most computer displays use. While it does give you the added benefit of not having small black bars at the top and bottom of the picture when playing HD movies, I find 16:9 uncomfortable or odd to use for general work. I'd definitely take a look at it at a shop and use it for a bit, side by side with a 16:10 display to see what you are loosing in height vs. gaining in a little extra width.

If you are looking for 1920 displays, at 16:10 they have 1920x1200 instead of the 1920x1080 that the display you are looking at uses.

Edit: Regarding the price, your paying 16% more for a 14% increase in screen real estate. Sounds about right to me.

Edit 2: They are both Full HD resolution, but neither of them support Component or HDMI inputs, only the standard 15 pin and DVI computer connections.

  5. I'd like to thank True for their local caching of torrents using Azureus on a few hosts. I don't know if it's just some employees there or a corporate policy to save on the limited international bandwidth, but most torrents I download usually have a few peers on True that deliver at the full speed of my connection. The IP's of these peers has not changed since I've noticed them, which has been at least 6 months, and the speeds I receive from them are 300k+ each.

You may think this is crazy BUT I just recently started a download of some rather old files which couldn't be considered popular by any stretch of the imagination and have been around for ages. A day after I started downloading them, I noticed these hosts were feeding me at full speed, yet the hosts themselves were only at 15% - 30% themselves. It appears to me that True has some script running which detects torrent files being downloaded (perhaps it's set off after x number of people have requested the file) and they begin to download the file themselves with these hosts to cache the content locally.

    :o

As much as people like to talk trash about True, try to find me a single ISP in the west that does that!

    Bravo True, BRAVO!

  6. Yes, bad experiences with licensed online software! In case of M$ we have to have the licensed software on CD or DVD when it comes to re-install the product.

Same applies to Adobe or MAC OS!

Losing the original installation media doesn't count. :o

    Right and wrong as well!

In case the "original" Software Media was an OEM or better bundled Software to an product, brand name pp., you'll need to have the Media in most cases and it's not allowed to use a different media for installation.

Let say you have an Acer with MS-Software preinstalled and loose the original Media or Recovery Partition, even Acer don't need to supply you with an new media and MS will never do that because MS didn't service the bundled OEM in any way, except updates.

If your Media which you had loosed were an real Original from the Developer like MS, Adobe pp, you can use any real original Media for reinstallation you just need to have the proof of the purchase and the original License key.

    Cheers.

Granted, but in this case we're talking about "licensed online software" (which Microsoft and Adobe sell separate media for), so losing it involves ordering replacement media which is the same inconvenience one would have if the software were retail or licensed. In fact, I'd say it's probably easier to get your hands on replacement MS and Adobe media for their license programs since they sell the media as separate SKU from the license. For replacement retail media you'd likely need to produce some proof that you purchased a retail (physical) copy.

  7. I recommend you buy M$ software as physical product.

    Why so?

You should decide for yourself what to buy or not to buy.

I made a suggestion, now its your turn.

I believe he was looking for the reasoning behind your recommendation. Your recommendation infers that you had a bad experience purchasing a license or some non "physical" product (or heard of others having such an experience perhaps?).

What does physical product mean by the way? A license without media?

I'm only posting here as I'm actually interested in your reason for the recommendation as well.

For the OP, this is Microsoft's list of Trusted Partners in Bangkok for retail software sales.

  8. I really like the performance specs of this, dual core & 8GB being very convenient, but I don't like 16x9 displays for doing work on a PC. The size and weight of the 13.3" model might get me to overlook the display if I can find one with a dual core CPU.

Edit: Just read on pcmag that the 13" they tested included a 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo U9600 (I think they meant SU9600). Just have to wait until the end of April.

  9. This is a microSD

    http://windowsonthego.files.wordpress.com/...small-micro.jpg

A 16GB compact flash card would work as well and be about half the price, at $25 or so.

They should both come with a plastic case to keep it intact, but should be put in a padded envelope or small box for added protection. Shipping shouldn't be much more than $30 or so.

I'd also encrypt whatever you send to be on the safe side. Truecrypt would be good for that. http://www.truecrypt.org/

With my true DSL connection I get about 1Mb to the states, which would get you 10GB in a 24hour period. You would just need somebody knowledgeable over there to get the files on an ftp site with a reliable connection of 512kb - 1mb of upstream bandwidth.

  10. When sending an email from a Gmail account via a web browser, the headers on the receiving end do not reveal the senders IP address.

When using IMAP, and probably POP as well, the IP is revealed in the headers.

    Solution: Use your browser. :o

    Are you sure?

    Then try this (source GMAIL):

    1. Log in to Gmail.

    2. Open the message you'd like to view headers for.

    3. Click the down arrow next to Reply, at the top-right of the message pane.

    4. Select Show original.

The full headers will appear in a new window.

Your suggestion will not work when someone send from Gmail to Gmail... and I trust this is not different from other web mail clients

    /edit for grammatical error

Sure, you can read the headers from within gmail, and they may contain the senders IP address, but I was talking about SENDING email from the gmail web interface.

As far as sending from gmail to gmail, I didn't give that a try, but I assume the answer will be the same and the senders IP will not be revealed. I have no idea why they show the IP when using an IMAP client (and possibly POP) but that's how it is. Use a browser with gmail for the somewhat anonymity of not having your IP in the headers.

  11. As far as I can tell Gmail does not reveal the senders IP in their headers and never has. That was a Hotmail "feature" which I believe they stopped doing ages ago, but I haven't used it for quite some time so I can't be certain.

  12. People are only going to assume that you have internet access, either free or for a fee, with these computers and will spend maybe 3 seconds glancing at the services you are trying to sell them before trying to check their email. I've seen large hotels advertise their restaurants, etc., on the TV system, but I just don't see that "experience" successfully carrying over to a computer. Just print something out and make it look attractive and people will look through when they arrive.

If you're dead set on this idea, I did buy a small form factor HP for about 3k baht at Pantip. P4 1.8, 512MB, 40GB, CD. Very quiet, for now, which was a requirement since I have it running 24/7. Several places selling similar small desktops there and in Fortune, no idea about Phuket though.

I did see some small touch screens (around 12" I think) that might be good if you can develop a website or flash app with text, graphics, and buttons designed a bit large to accommodate it. The same place had very small desktop systems to go with the touch screens, I think they were Acer. They were about the size of 2 external HDD enclosures stack on top of one another. They had CD-ROM's so easy to get your distro of choice on there to run Firefox. The name of the place is uart on the 4th floor of Pantip.

  13. everyone on web thinks thaivisa is over moderated and filled with a bunch of losers complaining about this and that.

So you came here to save us from ourselves? :o

Seems the real "losers" are the ones who waste their time posting unbelievable nonsense on websites they complain about. You'd think they could find something better to do with their time, but then they wouldn't be such losers.

  14. Ofource there in the business to make money, I mean there not running a charity

And how do you suppose they are going to make any money with these 5k - 10k lifetime memberships they're offering everyone these days?

If I they keep the doors open past June I'll be amazed.

You will be amazed if the make it past June??????????

California wow are still making huge profits and is showing no signs of even being close to being in trouble, I have no idea why people think they are in trouble when they are actually making more money now then they were before.

Also like another poster said, most people dont go and alot will buy it now as its cheap to use it in the future.

Also California wow might be opening another branch in Bangkok in 2011, doesnt sounds like a company that is going to close its doors in June as you say.

Or do you mean June 2050?

    :D:D:D:D

I bet your 8k baht lifetime membership will get you in there too. What a deal! :o
