Those of us who were there for all you can drink heinekens from 4-8pm for 300 THB know much better.  and that was only 10 years ago.  20 years ago?  Completely different world...

300 baht for 4 hours of unlimited Heineken? In Bangkok? Even 10 years ago that was a very good deal, Where was it -Khaosan? Wish I had known about it even so.

Think you are being a bit OTT with this 200 for a small Leo bit, that is a very extreme example and far from the norm. I am sure I paid a lot more than that the one time I was in SPASSO so I am  certainly not saying it is impossible. How about the name of this place. If it is a go-go that would explain a lot.

There is no denying that central Bangkok is pricey, but it is possible to go for a drink without getting a financial kick up the bum.

Nice story. Only problem is how this policeman can carry around B 100 k which is approximately R 40 k. That is 2 months or more salary for a normal policeman in South Africa.  My G search of the policemans name also only came up with the TV story nothing else. Maybe I am just too sceptical these days.

Can't comment on the figures quoted but I was thinking the same, that is a lot of cash for an SAP man. (Do they really get approx R20k a month now?) And how much is a flight from SA these days, last time I heard it mentioned it was double the price of a European flight. How much is he thinking of giving monthly, the cost of a transfer must almost equal the value of the gift.

At least they serve the coffee hot. I have been to so many small coffee shops in Thailand where the coffee served is tepid. I am no coffee aficionado but like a hot latte every now and then. What choice do I have? I don't like Coffee World or Au Bon Pain's versions of latte. I of course would like somewhere where I do not have to pay so much. I used to swear that I would never set foot in Starbucks because it is overpriced, but ended up eating my words and visiting quite regularly.

Well said chief, lukewarm coffee is an all too frequent an experience here. On to Starbucks I like a coffee upstairs at the one on Beach Rd / Soi Yamato when in town, provided it's not too hot. Interesting watching the activities on Beach Rd as well.

  4. I understand that Songkran in Bangkok only lasts three days (or has it been reduced to two now?) and only happens in certain areas, so that most or many people can be almost unaware that it is happening. I normally hibernate for three days then set off there for the duration.

In this thread a few years ago somebody said that Chumphon only lasts one day, sounds like a good one.

Why not invest in another Pattaya Condo ?

I've heard that there are some units at Suan Sawarn that are still available and apparently will be completed this year (2011)

    Simon

Did Suan Sawarn ever get completed? I used to know people who had put money up but lost touch with them over time.

I think the Thais with poor English skills left and no wonder with the "gramma police" jumping on any small mistakes.

On occasion I am a grammar policeman but I never have a go at non-native English speakers. It is easy enough to recognise them by the word choice and style.

I do not really see the harm in it, the standard of spelling and grammar is largely dismal to embarrassing and if people took note of being corrected instead of taking offence it could only help them.

  7. Was not comparing with real ale or stout, they are obviously very different things to Thai beer, but I don't really notice any great difference between local stuff and average lager. At current exchange rates ale prices for Brits are not going to look good jn many places. Can't really comment on supermarket prices as I almost never drink at home, basically a bar-stool wallah. Not saying Thai beer is great but it is drinkable and I don't know of many who blank it when they are here.

Was Bertrand interfering with play? As the great Bill Shankley said: "If you're not interfereing with play, what are you doing on the pitch".

I thought that was Brian Clough.

  9. I remember Alex Young very well, first I've heard of this. good man, not everyone's favourite but well worth his corn. Sorry to see you go Alex, condolences to your family.

Sorry to correct you nikmar but the three were Ball, Harvey and Kendall.

    I am confused.

180 quid for for draught leo compared with 2 quid in most parts upcountry.

    Bangkok is expensive.

I do not understand your confusion Pete.

In most ordinary/average bars here a 620ml bottle of Leo varies between 65/80 baht.

Not many bars here do draught but one that did over Christmas/New Year charged 180 for 1000ml (1 litre). Like I said draught around here is more expensive than bottles.

Yes Central Bangkok can be very expensive. A 330ml bottle between 90/160, but a lot of places do specials on draught 500ml for 120.

Hope you are now less confused.

And i did not say 180 quid for draught Leo, I was quoting a baht pricee

It happened a long time ago, there's obviously a lot of mistruths out there online, so where can I actually read the facts of what happened and I'm particularly interested in WHY it happened - up to the time of the incident (I don't really want to read about after the incident). Point me in the right direction please.

I will always remember it as I was travelling on the train through Sheffield to Manchester before final whistle time and was surprised by loads of scousers getting on the train clearly in a foul mood, something had obviously happened but it made good sense for me to keep quiet.

Sorry for not replying before, easiest is just to google it and go through the responses/

  12. I have just discovered that Langkawi is duty free (or tax free or something) which translates to non-overpriced alcohol. Accommodation does not seem to be overpriced either. Added to Malaysia's relatively superior infrastructure and being a nice place could put it on the list for some. Bit small though.

To Mr Freedomnow, sorry about this, posted before i checked the OP. No wonder you get grumpy.

Beer is not cheap here. It is much the same as UK prices and in comparison to the average income it is very expensive.

    Kii is cheap everywhere.

Disagree that it is much the same as UK prices here, in most parts of the country it is still comfortably below two quid a pint even at current exchange rates. I am talking bar prices not supermarket or 7. But I agree that compared to the average income it is pricey, beer drinking (while increasing in popularity) is still a minority thing for Thais, the cheap whisky is still the drink for most.

Outside of Bangkok and the resorts draught beer is dearer than bottles which confuses me. One place I go in had draught Leo for 180 a litre and 630ml bottles at 70. As our American cousins say "go figure".

  14. Claffey surely these jobs that "do pay well by global standards" are very limited in numbers and nature. They would be specialised and require specific qualifications and specific experience, not jobs that anybody could walk into and start tomorrow. You give the impression that anybody can find a well paid job here anytime. Sadly much of what you say is stating the obvious or just tosh.

By the way he said he would NOT have a problem showing funds and one would presume that his income comes from the family business. Have a nice day.

Any chance you could list some of these jobs that are easily available for foreigners? I am a bit past my "best before" date but you never know your luck.

Malaysia is a muslim country with a high tax on alcohol and cannot be regarded as a bench mark. In the tax-free Malaysian Lankawi the price much lower.

Do I read you correctly, Langkawi is tax-free?? I did not know that.

So drinking in bars and restaurants there is cheaper than Thailand? Can you quote some examples please H.

Welcome newbie, you seem a decent sort of cove hope you enjoy it here.

Also just hope you're not a sellick sympathiser like the gent with a similar name who used to come on here a while ago.

Depends on what you mean by drink too much. Have 8 instead of 6 on a Saturday night or need one in the morning to get rid of the DTs.

But it seems to be that this forum classes both as illustrating a problem drinker/alcoholic.

Why doesn't someone, sometime find out EXACTLY why?  Many have said KL difficult. Can't we get to the bottom of this someday and ask a higher up at both of these embassies why they are such royal pain in the asses??  Imagine how many people do not know about this and waste so much time and money. Really what is their job? How can a 60 day Tourist visa be so hard to get?  Anyone have a real reason?  Not just that is the way it has been blah blah blah.  Maybe a letter or e mail campaign?  I don't really know

Why? is not a question to ask here. If you knew why what difference would it make - none.

We are just foreigners and there is never any expectation for us to understand "why it is". If we understand "what it is" then that's fine. And if we don't then that's fine too.
