Let's say your child died and you drank to forget. That would eventually lead to physical addiction. It is well known which parts of the brain are stimulated by alcohol and how dependency occcurs. I think its more a matter of how you got there than different types of addiction.

Those are special circumstances, which are not the case for most drinkers. But yes, it starts (and ends) mentally, we just don´t want to confront reality in general. For some it may be "only" social contacts, or whatever, but for some, the death of a friend in life.

Whatever it is, it starts mentally. Then it becomes physical dependancy in addition, but that is an, only additional, small problem, compared . . .

The physical dependancy, you can clear in a few days, or a week (if inclined to do so)

I find the OP-question funny (sorry), because the mental aspect is clearly about 98 percent, versus the physical aspect 2 percent, or so . . .

@ ding. I don´t know, what you mean by: " Physical allergy of the body ", well, i do, but trust me, that´s the least of your (our) problem.

Master the real problem first, then give your body a week, or two, for the physical, and you´re out of here.

Easier said, than done, i know !

However, it´s a mental dependancy, first and foremost, to answer the OP.

    It´s in the OP already.

The smoking in particular you should seriously address.

Maybe reading BanK's story will help..http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/880079-lung-cancer/

Yeah, it´s stupid, i know. I´m trying to switch to E-Cig. it´s the better of two evils. Whats your opinion on e-cigs, Sheryl. Oh, i forgot, we´re not allowed to discuss illegal things here. But they would be so much help for thousands of Smokers !

"Really I’m just wondering how others here in my age group who have had or experienced health problems while in Thailand,  coped , managed and came to terms with being over 60 years of age and having to face a possible uncertain medical future. "

Important in my view to embrace being over 60 and enjoy it as much as possible. Try to

do sufficient exercise , eat healthily and attempt a stress free life.

Having or getting insurance is helpful.

    Of course:

Unless one is very lucky health issues will arise for many  mature people. When health issues have arisen for me I have done my research (including posting questions on this forum) and usually eventually found the best specialist doctor who treats me as a patient and not a customer and each time has been capable of being of help.

A person needs to be prepared to sometimes travel to another city to get the best doctor.

Important when a health matter does arise to try to address it as soon as possible.

Of course no matter what age a person is everyone potentially faces an uncertain medical future, as there is no guarantee any of us will wake up in the morning.

Be smart and enjoy your life.

Damn, i´m in the 55 range, smoking and drinking (a little, well, a little to much), enjoying my life, just had a check up, all fine, and "lemmingly" paying my insurance every year. I hope they remember me in 5 years. But this thread reminds me, that can´t go on forever. Thanks.

I am surprised that nobody have yet tried to quantify what is "normal" drinking. Most health guidelines suggest 3 units of alcohol per day on average is tolerable. Keep in mind that a unit of alcohol is defined as 10 ml of pure alcohol.

A weekly intake of 21 units could be:

    1 bottle of wine

    6 beers

Personally, on average, that is my upper limits.

    You can´t quantify. We´re all different !

    Especially me . .

Let me guess, she´s in the Hospital which name starts with the second letter in the Alphabet.

Years ago, my wife was there, diagnosed with an ovary zyst. We now know these come and go completely normal in a womans life, but they wantet to do surgery, immediately. The price: astronomical.

Didn´t do it, and my wife is still alive, and kicking . . . my butt.

Anyway, i hope she gets better soon, i know how hard it is .

if she has really "only" (i know) dengue, she`s raking up the bill "for a few weeks".

Nothing the Hospital could do for a few weeks. It definitely is an emergency initially, but the rest of it should be in a Bungalow at the beach.

Very often the strategy is to provoke the authorities to respond with brutality and restrictions on people's movements/freedoms. That can lead to inspiring resentment among people who otherwise would be content with the government. Another purpose is to show people that the government is not able to guarantee security. At least that's the traditional strategy from the second half of the 20th Century. The bombings in the South have not seemed to follow this strategy, and it's really not clear what their purpose is supposed to be.

I"m still digesting this, but i know, theres some truth there

  8. I have only been put into a van when I was going to Nakorn Sri Thammarat airport. There were so few going there that they sent us in a van.

But the trip to Suratthani is always usually packed, so they use their big buses.

(Haven't had my morning coffee yet..) I see now that you meant the trip from hotel to catamaran pier in Nathon. They also have smaller minibuses, but usually this goes to the Lamai route because they can pick up more people on 1 trip.

Some of them do drive their vans like a madman, but it's only a short trip anyway.

Personally, if I don't have too much heavy bags, (which I usually don't since I'll be going with AirAsia), I'll just take a song thiaw to the pier and save a few bucks.

Feels much better, dying on a short trip, instead of a long one . . smile.png

Sorry, i know, the probability is smaller on a short trip, but still . . .

And yes, take the songtheaws, whenever you can, they usually drive careful, because there are usually thaipeople on board, not many farangs . . . smile.png

(no, it´s just because of fear for their car, i´m afraid)

  10. "The "mean" is the "average" where you add up all the numbers and then divide by the number of numbers".

I´ll better turn around and leave this forum quickly . . smile.png Don`t worry, I won`t let the door hit me.

I worte, "The "mean" is the "average" where you add up all the numbers and then divide by the number of numbers. The "median" is the "middle" value in the list of numbers. To find the median, your numbers have to be listed in numerical order, so you may have to rewrite your list first. The "mode" is the value that occurs most often. If no number is repeated, then there is no mode for the list.

To understand the number one would ideally have all three. I guess that's why the OP has not come back on the thread."

Before you edited my post to change it's mean ing.

Ok, sorry. But the OP has not come back, because his head is "spinning" now, like mine. He didn´t expect, that he would open such a can of worms with his question. Does he have a simple, useable answer now ? No.

  11. What a vague question. One would need details like Education Qualifications and also The Industry and also The Specific Job Position.

    Or else its so vague.

The question is very clear. It's not vague at all.
