  1. So I finally got into Surin. I got the bus from Rattanaburi to the town. Bus stops just before the bus station.

I think the places there serve their purpose really well. I had an English breakfast in Farang Connection. Very nice.

After having wizzed around Surin in a Tuk Tuk taking in BigC and the likes I got back to the bus. It wasn't leaving for a while so I went to the Sports Bar. I had a meat pie and a beer. That too was great.

All of this talk about nowhere to go. I can't believe you lot. These places are just what I needed.

Who said there was nowhere to go? Surin has plenty of places to go. Farang Connection does a great English Breakfast. The Sports Bar like most places does the Staffords or Buriram Pie Man pies that are nice. If your looking for a plain English Breakfast or a microwaved meat pie you can get that anywhere. If you want German food, Pizza, fresh cooked breads, Imported Australian steaks, good salads, Italian food ect. all cooked from scratch you will have to go to Norbies, Lorinzinos, or Sydney Seasons.

  2. Hi Everyone, OP here!

Thanks for all the help. Sorry that Starbeams is closing, had some excellent food there. My wife loves the Steak Bomb sandwich (for breakfast on one occasion!). We shall be in Surin this weekend, so will try for one final visit.

So, please can someone give directions to find these other places? I don't really know Surin, I know the railway station, Starbeams, FC and not much else.

    Lorenzinos

    Haka Zhou

    Sydney Seasons

    Thanks again.

    Lorinzinos and Haka Zhou-

Go past Big C (Big C on the right) as you are coming into town. Go through the traffic light in front of Big C and take your next right along the klong. Lorinzinos is about a hundred meters down on the right, Haka Zhou is down a few hundred meters more from Lorinzinos on the right also.

Sydney Seasons is on 226 as you are heading out of town towards Buriram. After you pass the Memorial Hotel, Sydney Seasons is a few blocks more on the left.

Norby's is on Soi Kola near the Thong Tarin Hotel in the main city.

  3. I think people are missing the point here. Starbeams is/was a restuarant. As are the establishments listed in the post above this one. FC, Green Mango and Sports Bar are more places to go for a drink, initially anyway. Just because you don't like them it does not mean that they are crap.

    Different places for different markets.

They have TV's there to watch sport, because that is what their customers want to do. There may be a bit of noise, as this is what happens when people watch sport. Some people smoke there and they sit near the door. Hardly noticable, I am an ex smoker too and it doesn't bother me.

I personally have never had a problem with the food in any places.

If this type of place is not for you then say, but it is unfair to say the places are crap and that there is nowhere to go in Surin, because there is.

Starbeams will indeed leave a void in the eating places in Surin. However, I am sure that the management at Starbeams have thought about this, and have still decided not to start again, at least in Surin town.

So come one. Lets look at the situation logically. As a Brit the best way for me to explain is that Starbeams is in the restaurant category, go for a meal and maybe have a drink too. The establishments around the bus station are more like pubs. Go for a drink and maybe have something to eat.

I have frequented all of the places mentioned on this thread and they all have their own attributes.

Shouldn't have a go just because of personal preference.

There are plenty of good places to get a drink in Surin. Sell 50 baht Archa and you will fill the place. The title of the thread is "Good places to EAT in Surin Town". For good Farang FOOD Starbeam, Norby's, Lorinzino,s or Sydney Seasons are the places to go.

  4. Depends on what i fancy whilst in the City centre.

Starbeams- International food, His Subs, Mexican food and Burgers in my view are excellent.

    Lorenzinos- Swiss Guy. Delicious Lasagne.

Haka Zhou- Japanese food. I probably go here the most.

Sydney Seasons- Love the Salads and Mussels here.

All the restaurants above obviously have alot more on their menu, and there are plenty of other Western establishments in the City but i don't usually go to them.

I agree with you 100% other than I would put Norby's high on the list also.

  5. Its a Mexican twist there is a facebook group for the place if you search with some pictures, the name I think is just a tongue in cheek to have a a little fun and a theme.

I know the owner a little a jolly American that knows his food. Its a new place open for 4-5 days but expanding the menu almost daily and with only one other Farang place in town there is definitely room for it.

For pizza, stews, pies, sausages, schnitzels and european type of food we have Living in the Past by Frank and Nong

For burgers, Mexican style and so on we have Cuckoo's

Both places and the owners are great and no matter where you go you will get go service and good food, both are worth a visit.

I know the owner a little a jolly American that knows his food.

Sorry, but do Americans really know what "good" food is? Mexican style American food and burgers..... laugh.png

  6. McDonald's it is set up to be self serve. You place your own order, you return your own tray. You leave no tip. The same as self sevice gas stations. That keeps the price low. In other restaurants where you are served and leave a tip it is totally different. Of course in McDonald's you get the occasional person that thinks they should get cleaned up after for the whole 100 baht they paid for their meal. Thai's would think different with the class system but I would never take lessons in etiquette from a Thai anyway. My Thai wife has more class than 99% of Thai people and would never dream of leaving her trash for others to clean in a fast food restaurant. Have some class and clean up after yourself.

  7. There is nothing 'cheap' about Steve's pies - apart from the price. Equally, Staffords pies are excellent value at the price I pay.

Yesterday I cooked Minced Beef & Onion pies from both suppliers to make a direct, side-by-side, comparison. The Buriram Pie looked slightly bigger and was very juicy. The Staffords Pie was dry by comparison and needs gravy - difficult to eat on it's own as a snack. However, the taste was very good and had slightly larger mince and more onion than the Buriram Pie. In terms of taste the Buriram pies was a little 'sweeter' whilst the Staffords pie had a more 'beefier' taste.

My conclusion - we are fortunate to have such a good choice locally. Frankly, both pies are superior to pies I have bought from Pattaya - only the Sportsmans pies come close to Staffords.

    +1

    Good assessment!

  8. I have had many a Staffords and Buriram Pie Man's products and both are good quality and value. The difference in the products are minimal. I have met as many people that like one as much as the other. The difference is pretty much "splitting hairs". We are lucky to have both of these fine companies in the area to buy from. Both provide excellent service. I would suggest trying both and decide for yourself.

  9. Both of the Makros in Chiang Mai have a 'champ' restaurant equipment section. I think they are owned by Makro. And if not that, surely there are restaurant equipment shops around town.......probably near the market area......look for the shops that sell those locally made stainless bar b ques and stoves etc. My wife is from Surin and I'll ask her.

Thanks for your reply i will go there later today and look to see what i can find , but in the past i have not seen anything like a sausage stuffer in surin.

    Cheers..:D

I saw meat/ sausage grinders in Surin Macro yesterday. They are next to the meat slicers. They didn't have them before. They are a new item. --Joe--

  10. Go to BMC Toolmart in Korat. They are the largest tool shop I have seen around. They gave me a Cromwell catalog that has every tool you can imagine including many woodworking tools. What they don't stock in their store they will order for you. They also have a discount card so don't forget to get one if you go. If you Google "Cromwell Tools Thailand" they have an online catalog you can look at.

  11. My complaint with the article isn't that American-style fast food is good for you...it isn't, my complaint is that Thai food has its own issues. A newspaper ought to show a little balance.

What, by not writing articles warning about the dangers of the fast food, processed food diet?

I'm sure thai papers, and the nation, must write stuff about thai food issues.

That article may have a few smaller facts skewed up, well it's a newspaper after all and that's what they do all the time, but the main thrust of the article is spot on and is written as a warning. It's a good warning and when you're talking about showing balance, then yes, we need balance against the fraudulent advertising that entices citizens to eat this nutritional nuclear bomb. Newspapers, particularly thai ones, need to write a lot about the dangers of the western diet of food. I hope they are doing so, because the general shape of the thai populace in my 20 years here has changed quite radically. Not surprising at all with the complete invasion of 7/11 stores. What a nightmare that has been unleashed by american corporations, all over the world too.

7/ 11 is a Japanese company. Do you have any idea what you are talking about??????????????? Is seems you are spot off.

  12. Moo near the night market is good with cruisers and the Burn Shop across from Macro is good with sport bikes. We have a group of farangs here in town that go on a lot of rides together. You are welcome to join in on the rides if you like. What kind of bike do you have?

  13. I heard an unsubstantiated rumour that the gramophone will be coming to Surin within the next decade or two. Although last year the first person in Surin to own a car was thrown in the klong because " Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" :D

I think I saw a fire here the other day so we are getting more modern all the time.

  14. There is mayo made here that is not sweet. Someone probably bought the wrong stuff.

I got the sweet mayo at a Subway in Pattaya and one in Bangkok 6 months apart. The corporation here must have made a change in suppliers. I was hoping the owner Greg that posts on here would have some input. I won't be eating there again until they change it back.

  15. The last two times I have gone to Subway in the past year the mayo has been horrible. It tasted like the sweet Thai crap. Yuk!! In the past it had been good like the Subways back in the US. Has anyone else noticed this? Have they changed to the cheaper local crap?
