1. My Thai wife's parents back in the village made a big thing of the fact that students would all have Apple iPads if the new Government won power

My wife said nothing as she has no right to an opinion in her village although she is Uni educated

But later said to me, that will be lucky to even get a cheap Ipad cover

The sad part is her village still believes all the things they promised will come

Why is your wife not allowed an opinion in her village?

    simple, its a RED village

no descent is allowed or else!

  2. i am very sorry to hear that, i wasn't a frequent visitor to P & W but i remember on one occasion many years ago, one of the staff had a problem with a very rude drunken person

i sorted it out for her and on my next visit, he had heard about it, thanked me and i ate for free that day

i never once went there without him saying hello if he was in and the girl always recognized me

he struck me as a real gent who hosted a very good place that was the envy of many

i am sure he will be missed immensely by his family and friends

i am very sorry for your loss

    RIP BOB

  3. These posts interest me a lot as I have spent the last 8 years living 6 to 8 months
per year in Goa. I own property there and operate a business..
Am currently in Pattaya but will be returning in the next week or 2 with my family...
The costs in Goa are substantially less then Pattaya for most things.
However, the standard can be much lower,>> as is pointed out by the OP saying that
a Doctor was prepared to examine him in a bar....(would you trust that Doctor, maybe get him a drink first eh!)
If you are going to visit Goa for medical tourism I would advise you to be very thorough in
your choice of facility and the Doctors you use. There is NO comeback if they F#*k IT UP....
There are full medical facilites in Goa for everything. I know about them. I have 2 children born
in Goa, know many people who have had works done, had MRI scans, much dental work,
friends in traffic accidents, appendicitus(??) and a friends father had a stroke.. All things taken care of very well.
But I have heard of many mistakes also....(as per every country I guess)..

Goa is a wonderful place if you like beach life, booze and Indian food...and it's a very very
friendly place. BUT, it is very under developed by comparison to Pattaya...If your a luxury lover
then don't even think about it.
The accomodation prices are much much higher than Pattaya if you want a bit of luxury.
If someone paid a fiver a night for staying in Candolim in Goa then it must have been a
real dump and very basic....(ok for your dog,>> but not mine!)
Yes Tubourg beer can be 30p a bottle along with Bud but you have
to get it from the supermarket(not so super by the way). As for the claims of handmade shirts for a fiver
much better than in Pattaya and titanium glasses at 63 quid...I can tell you straight,,YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!.
I know, I've bought it....
That said, I love Goa because life is on the beaches, restaurants, bars, shops, nightlife...and a great relaxed atmosphere

If any body would like some GENUINE and ACCURATE info I will be happy to help....Don't believe all you might see on a Snappy website!!!
But most of all PLEASE NOTE that in GOA you will not get the quality of surroundings you can get
in the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital>>>>>(by a long way)and also the prices of course!!!!..)
Plus I would like to point out that there are no direct flights to Goa from BKK at this time of posting(I wish)

I know not which part you frequent fiver a night Sea Shell Inn, Antonio guest Candolim, look it up on the web, suggest you visit and tell them its a dump,,but as I said low season, next month up three fold no doubt,No supermarket prices for Bud or Tuborg ,bar prices, Dangui Optitions yes 63 quid world class, quality shirts under a fiver actually four pounds 60 p Lived there for 10 years ,sold house for 4x what I paid for it,escaped with it all in black plastic bag,tax man sought me initially for profits on share dealing on Bombay stock exchange, gees those were the days, but then caught on about capital gains tax on house ,never came back for two years

Not making mistake of buying again in foreign land especially with visa requirement, still I came out it well, bit too well sometimes ,got to pass through immigration on way out, they may nab me there

an interesting post Dandare, the Sea Shell Inn is currently closed for renovation but the Casa Sea Shell (same company) is quoting 2000 INR per night (£26.50GBP) for non aircon room and 2500INR for an aircon room (£32.00GBP) based on a five night stay for x2 people now

Antonios is 1000INR (£13) non aircon 1300NR with aircon (£17.25) based on a five night stay for x2 people now

if you can get either one discounted down to £5 i will be very interested how?

  4. Nationwide now charge 2% plus one pound for all foreign withdrawals, aeon do not charge the 150 baht fee.

this poster is correct, there is no 150 baht fee with Aeon atms

they will deliver up to 40 notes in one transaction if your bank allows it

despite many nay sayers on here, i have used Aeon now since UOB bank started charging the 150 baht in October 2009

i have never had a single problem at any of their machines

however the biggest problem is that too many farangs use them at busy locations and on weekends quickly run out of money

so you may have to run around a bit or queue for a while but at a 150 baht saving, (a days wage for Thais in some areas) i think its worth the extra effort

there are four units in Pattaya

x 2 at tesco north pattaya x1 at big c extra and x1 at homeworks south pattaya

the one at Homeworks always seems to be in service

    i hope that helps

  5. BANGKOK BANK 25 notes-all over town

UNITED OVERSEAS BANK 30 notes- around but less than any thai banks try Tops or second road branch

    AEON 40 notes- Tesco lotus pattaya nua x2 , homeworks x1 , big c extra x1

  6. i have had x2 Garmin units-now sold

i have Kenwood /garmin unit on my kenwood touch screen unit

i have updated to maps 11 ? with the help of a member on here-thank you again

the inbuilt unit is so much better than the garmin seperates

    its worth the extra money........

If it's the same unit as installed in Fortuner then personally I wouldn't get it again and would go for an aftermarket dash unit. Reason being is driver / passenger cannot do any input to it while the car is in motion. You may say that you'll input everything before setting off but 90% of the time this is never the case.

Updated maps from Toyota are fairly expensive too.

I would say definately not worth the extra money but only my humble opinion.

its installed in a fortuner but it was not supplied by Toyota

this is an aftermarket touch screen kenwood unit that cost 39,000

the kenwood garmin GPS was added later

you can change your route as much as you want whilst on the move

it also re routes automatically if you choose not to follow its original instructions or traffic flow does not allow you to make the turn you wanted

maps are free to download if you know where to look and more importantly , how to install them

Thanks to a very helpful and informed TV member on here, i do, - thanks again for your help

i would not go back to Nuvi again after this experience with satnav

its a real pleasure to use......

@Timekeeper. Your Kenwood setup sounds nice. What is the model number of it?

Agree on the Nuvi (or the ESRI v11 map loaded in it), recently drove Phuket - Kanchanaburi - Phuket with the Toyota in-dash and the Nuvi going at the same time. Nuvi wanted to take me on a few weird detours.

its not a current model but its given great service, not a single blip from new

    its the DDX7039

i have a Kenwood CD changer attached and the kenwood Garmin unit with maps 11 installed

it also services, a reverse camera, i pod/ i phone, TV, USB, DVD, VCD and dual zone for the headrest monitors to function seperately to the main console and loads of other stuff

the manual is like a paperback book.

    its a great unit........

  8. Imagine how disappointed they will be in 6 months. This governement could go down as the worst ever

Then of course the argument will be the lady is not up the job, time to bring back the big man.

i have said this before but i think this thread deserves a re-run of my thoughts:

here's my thoughts for what they are worth:

we can expect a general election next year

my thinking on this is as follows

this government is simply a vehicle to get everything in place for Thaksins return, its like a pre-runner government

its not really meant to achieve anything, they have been instructed to simply tread water and just potter along without doing anything too radical to cause a serious protest or even a coup

the overall plan is to do very little except transfer Thaksin sympathizers into the top spots and by doing nothing they create a needy political atmosphere for some real leadership

after Thaksin's return and he having been cleared of all charges and the five year political ban has elapsed, he and the other 100+ banned thai rak thai politicians that are currently advising caretaker PM Yingluck will be free to run for office again

a new Thaksin led party will emerge, the caretaker PM will call an election, Phua Thai in its current form will lose ground wholesale, the new party will win by a landslide, no coalition with anyone will be needed

the current red MP's will be voted out of office by their own people in favour of Thaksins paid for and bought up cronies

consequently Thaksin and the voters will have in th eyes of the law legitimately ditched the red MP's who brought him home and his thai rak thai guys will take their current positions and a new order will emerge

the reds are going to be very unhappy but what can they say?

they were the ones who wanted Thaksin back and the red MP's were voted out by their own red people in favour of Thaksin's ''real politicians''

thaksin will be happy, he wins by a true landslide, everyone is where they are supposed to be already under this silent coup that's taking place right now

thaksin and all his mates will be back and rich(er) in six months.

    the people will not.

the red menace will be disbanded and disheartened through lack of funding from thaksin

they will not be needed as Thaksin has got his own better equipped army to back him up and he does not want a conflict he can't win

the reds will go back to picking rice, being treated like the mushrooms (kept in the dark and fed on shit) they are and left wondering what the hell happened ?

a very major event occurs that shakes the foundations of Thailand

someone involved closely in that very major event makes a new deal with the new order and Thaksin dynasty runs forever and ever and ever..........

Great piece of drivel.... a new order of Hoi Sois..... But the reds are armed now and will not go without a fight , thats for sure.... well... maybe without a soccer match..!

    thanks for your ''constructive'' criticism

the reds will Wai very low to Thaksin

remember they elected a clone PM simply for having the same name

    watch this space.........

  10. Cheers for your thoughts and advice on this guys, out of interest, how much is that kenwood/garmin unit timekeeper? and I take it thats an inbuilt unit yeah?

....bob, OES for toyota? what does that mean?

    cheers.

the kenwood set up owes me about 65,000 total

the kenwood /garmin unit is about 20,000 baht alone and is an add-on to the kenwood touch screen base unit that fits in the dash space when the standard toyota unit is removed

  11. pictures would be a good start though............

Trick to negotiation is to go in high. Ask for a squeeze, get told to bugger off, then ask for pics, and the request seems far more gentlemanly.

my mate used to follow that same principle

he used to ask ladies to dance and whilst doing so he would suggest that they leave and go somewhere and make love

one said to him once, ''i bet you get loads of refusals''

he said ''yes i do but i get the occasional acceptance and that makes asking worthwhile''........
