  1. Agar is readily available in supermarkets. I'm sure I've seen it in Tesco-Lotus (labelled in Thai). Just never needed to buy it myself. Use generic gelatin as a substitute, and mix nutrients in, depending on what you want to do with it

  2. If so cannot the current owner split it up first then sell me the multiple plots?

Don't forget that if you do that (and I'm not saying it's possible, I don't know if it is or not) then you would be increasing the transfer of ownership fees ( ค่าโอน) 'multiple' times as well. And that could get expensive.

  3. It's not an 'uncommon arrangement' as you put it. It happens in every hamlet across Thailand. You have two choices, basically.

    1) put up with it and accept that's what the locals do, or

    2) move. You aren't going to stop it in a month of Sundays no matter who you complain to.

Sorry my suggestions are neither constructive, nor what you want to hear, but that's the way it is out here.

Anyway - Luuk Tung aint all that bad - some of it actually sounds musical sometimes. And listen to the local gossip coming over the wires; there's things to be learnt there that'll be good ammunition one day.

( you're going to tell me now that you haven't had the time to start learning Thai yet, aren't you? Tut, tut)

  4. It's fine, I can always stay in a cheap hotel, if anyone would like to recommend one please do so, without making fun of me for wanting to save money (why is this funny- are you all rich?- don't answer that).

QueenVic has a 500 baht room, it's rather small though.

Isn't that 7000 Baht for two weeks? (and it's rather small, apparently)

  5. Just out of interest...when do you consider your wedding aniversary to be?? I mean officially it is the day you sign papers etc, but as far as aniversarys/celebration between you & your wife do you consider it to be the day you sign papers, or the day of your wedding party/Buddhist ceremony (if different)??

As we did the party-in-the-village bit before we registered, and because it coincided with my birthday, we use the party bit as our anniversary. That is, after all, when we effectively announced to all and sundry that we considered ourselves married. The rest is just a bit of paper required by some annoying bureaucrats from time to time.

  6. I think you have all the bases covered there. Mrs wife-to-be doesn't need a passport to get married, so don't worry about that one. I'm not sure about the need for witnesses either - the person behind the desk in the amphur and their superviser automatically become witnesses.

Not that I want to take any romance out of it for you, but it is basically a paperwork exercise to get a marriage certificate. The fun part is in the wedding ceremony in the village somewhere in Nakhon Nowhere

I wish you both all the best. I celebrate my 20th year of marriage later this year. It's been a roller coaster of a ride, but mostly a good time.

  7. Furthermore he hit the nail on the head when he said their are no pearls to be found in the bg scene. Such plain and obvious wisdom that so many ignore.

No pearls in the bar..pearl necklaces maybe, but pearls no.

Pearls are there to be found. Some even more precious. Just coming up to our 20th wedding anniversary, mine's a diamond.

You just have to find the right one .......

  8. 1337 is the number for Pattaya City Call Centre. There are these notices all down Sukhumwit road with different legends on them. Mostly the number is used to get information about Pattaya or events. This poster intimates that you can also use the number to rat on someone doing something naughty or illegal. แจ้ง means to report and เบาะแส is a clue or hint. Just translated into English in a rather peculiar way.

  9. This is not thai to english but english to thai

I was watching a movie that had a machine rendered Thai subtitle. Instead of translating can in the context of "I can do" the machine translated in the context of "tin cans"

The whole movie was like: ผมกระปงทำได้(I can do it)

In a similar vein, I have a copy of the film "Monster House" which has obviously had computer translation of its Thai subtitles. Throughout the film, whenever the name of the character "Chowder" is mentioned it is translated in the subtitles as อาหารต้มคละดว้ยเนื้อต่าง ๆ which comes out as "mixed boiled food with various kinds of meat".

Can't argue with that I suppose - it is correct!!

  10. When you can see a large building ahead on the left side of the road with a yellow 'Captain' sign on the top of it, slow and look for a sign on the left of the road that says 'Euro Badminton'.

eefoo - if you are going up Chaiyapruek 2 from Sukhumvit and come to the big shop with the Captian sign - you have gone too far by about 200m.

Just to clarify - 'When you can see a large building ahead ....' is not the same as 'when you get to a large building ...'

you can see the Captain sign for almost 300m before you get to it - long enough to 'slow down and look for a sign ...'

By the way - you don't need a spade to get wild (or any other) bougainvilleas. Just take cuttings.

  11. There's a new garden centre opened up near my house, it's very large and has most plants you can think of and quite a few others. Never had problems buying them in other garden shops before though, maybe you were just unlucky in the ones you looked at. Don't forget the weekend (Fri - Sun) plant market on Sukhumwit, opposite Bangkok Pattaya Hospital. They definitely have everything!

To get to the one near my house, turn left off Sukhumwit southbound at the Chayapreuk junction. Travel up Chayapreuk 2 over the railway and on for about 1.5 kms. When you can see a large building ahead on the left side of the road with a yellow 'Captain' sign on the top of it, slow and look for a sign on the left of the road that says 'Euro Badminton'. This is a crossroads of sorts, but it's not very obvious. Turn RIGHT, fork round the big tree and the garden centre is about another 100m on the left. It sells rice in bulk as well, for some reason!!
