  1. Turn right into Thepprasit from Sukhumwit heading south. About 3/4 of the way down to the soi 17 junction on the right hand side. Double shop house.

Turn right onto Sukhumwit from Pattaya Tay. About 200m on the left, small shop house. Can be hard to spot as there are a load of shops with junk outside there.

  2. Sounds like a takaab (aka takaap, tha-khap) to me. Nasty creatures and definitely best avoided. Seek medical help if the swelling doesn't go down quickly. Personally I always carry anti-histamine tablets in case of any bite. If I got bit by one of these chaps I would take two tablets and go immediately to a doctor for a further injection.

    Hope you recover soon

takaabs are supposedly the most common threat. and soi dogs.

    what are takaabs?

    This is the centipede, takaab.

Worse than the scorpion's bite, but not deadly.

I killed one twice this size not long ago.

  3. The water authority office is up the Khao Mai Keow (spelt something like that anyway!!) road in Naklua. You need to be on the southbound side of Sukhumwit and take the first left after the lights at the T junction that goes down to Naklua - (the one with the school on the corner). The water authority building is on the right just before the railway tracks - they even have a drive through window so you don't need to park. Can't miss the place - it's got a big water tank in the yard!

  4. I think the result will be this, this time round after exhausting her savings and borrowings (not me - cant assist in money burning) from friends/family for next set of visa/wp/flights, she'll will eventual get a promised WP, work her nuts off massaging 6 days a week, be locked in an apartment at night, and make 10-12k a month (after boss "cutting" -as she puts it - "he not like girl make much money"), not exactly the 30k-40k a month promised, although she'll probably be somewhat adjusted off this after sending some home to family. Its a shame as if she had 80k savings plus some borrowings she could of setup something her on own or with a trusted friend, now she aint got a pot to piss in. Love to give this massage parlor boss a kicking..

your "lady" did get scammed, but if she hadn't, she would of given her money away eventually.. people who are not very clever always end up falling for some retarded obvious scam, it's just better the sooner it happens, then they might start thinking things through.

The word is HAVE. You both seem like sensible English speaking people. Please use the language correctly.

  5. What everyone seems to have overlooked is that the roundabout is not actually a roundabout. In fact its a death trap. It is not a roundabout as its not possible to go all the way around it. So its not really surprising that many people dont follow proper roundabout rules.

Even though I am from the UK and would have no problem using the roundabout the correct way round, I always have a degree of uncertainty when approaching that junction.

There is no excuse if he was drunk of course but the lesson should be re-design that junction. Nothing will happen of course.

Andy has it right here - the 'roundabout' is actually barricaded off between the two lanes of Pattaya Nua road, so that anyone coming from Naklua Road (as was the pick-em up driver in this case) has only one place to go, and that is eastwards on Nua. To get to the Beach Road, you have to travel several hundred yards up that road and make a U turn back down to the 'roundabout on the westward lane. From there you can get to the Beach Road turnoff.

As it has been implied that this chap was a 'resident' I would guess he probably knew this and was therefore trying to avoid the hassle by going the wrong way. It is after all a very wide piece of roadway, and at 4am any sensible driver would get away with it by creeping very slowly round the outside, past the entrance to the Dusit and then onto Beach Road, while making sure no other traffic was around.

Obviously this idiot didn't do that, and thought he could do it at speed.

RIP to the poor victims, and I hope Mr Giannini learns that it's not OK to kill people while ignoring traffic laws, whether under the influence or not.

  6. Frankly I am surprised that so many people still use Thai Air. They have old aircraft, the worst staff I have ever encountered *ever* and their safety record is nothing to write home about. They are not even good value for money!

Not on topic in this thread - but would you care to elaborate on that claim?

Worst staff and VFM could also do with being qualified.

  7. I quite liked the 'worst' ones. I don't understand 9 and 10 of the 'best' at all.

Vanessa Feltz is a portly UK TV presenter, so the joke is that "life is like a box of chocolates : empty" - both because she's had well publicised personal problems and she has a weight issue. So her life is empty and so's the box now.

And number 10 is about a UK thing in some chain pubs where they give you a number on a wooden spoon to take to the bar so they know which table you're sitting at. It's not a rib-tickler to me... ermm.gif

Thanks for that, Rumblecat. They do say that if a joke has to be explained, then it isn't a joke. I'd swap any of the 'worst' ones for those two!

  8. Now if only they can have the traffic lights at all the main junctions on Sukhumvit into Pattaya City to stay red for all directions for about 30 - 60 seconds, to give pedestrians enough time to cross safely, that would be great.

Watch the traffic and figure out how that would be great. Vehicles waiting against a red light start moving as soon as the opposing traffic lights go red. They're watching the lights of the other traffic stream - not their own!

Given that - the stream that has now had their light go red still continue through for up to 10 seconds, while the stream that is trying to go against their red light (knowing it's going to go green soon) are off and going. No wonder there are so many white lines on the floor at junctions.

Mr. or Mrs. pedestrian doesn't have a chance at such junctions without using common sense.

  9. Seems to me that someone's brother-in-law has a traffic light firm. Just look at all the redundant ones on the 'railway' road. I reckon that all these ones are going to be exactly the same.

The wheelchair access ramps are the same as well - I'll dig a picture out I took last week just outside Wat Chai and post it on here.

  10. Where is this exactly ?

between chaya pruk and the jomtien harbor

There is no harbour in Jomtien - it's a long crescent-shaped beach. Judging by the armco in the pictures, I guess it's near the new Jomtien second road which is still under construction. It's also a long way from the beach, so sit there and don't look towards the land and you'll be fine.

  11. I saw a different ending when I first read this joke, which is what it is, (See http://www.snopes.com/college/exam/hel_l.asp) :-

    So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Theresa during my freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in He11 before I sleep with you", and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that He11 is exothermic and has already frozen over.

The corollary of this theory is that since He11 has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct .... leaving only Heaven; thereby proving the existence of a divine being, which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God, Oh my God, I'm coming"

I think I prefer this version, as it seems someone has changed the moral viewpoint of the story without changing the physics, because if number one was true then He11 would be endothermic and not exothermic.
