  1. I have not been using Linux for vary long, but I could have my desk top looking like that in ten minutes. I don't think anybody ran out a wrote a new kernal trying to copy vista. It would not be necessary. In fact if I was on my other free Linux OS right now I could zap you a pic that looks better then that, but I am booted up in the wifes OS.

Sorry but to me that desktop looks win98 level attractive..

While its obviously a form over function thing creating a more attractive desktop experience is essential to get home users interested IMO

Trust me the reduced jpg converted from bmp snapshot is not showing what it looks like.  You can reach right into the screen it like three feet deep.  and if I was into waesting my processor I could reinstall the cube desk top that rotates and switchs and flips.  Its a full 3d desktop enviroment and it was around a long time.  Like windows were before MS started using them.  I am not really into bashing MS alot its just that they really don't invent most this stuff, they are just well placed in the assbly line, and PC maker love OS that make hardware need replacing thats why they love MS.   I don't think that anybody hopes there distro of linux is going to be the one that overcomes MS, its more like a poke in the eye to name something vistx or what ever anyway vista is really not a big deal, most people are far more concerned about how long XP will get supported then they are about how they can get vista, and I won't have to care anymore.

  2.   I was looking at some used PC the other day.  I could do this for about 2800baht which includes purchasing the PC. In fact that is the reason I was shopping, But as I am toy fund poor its another on hold, if I can't spring for that you can bet I am not going for a 9000baht solution.

Man MS sure did a good job distributing talking points.  I read that they even

sent a team of sales people to tour Thailand

and train people how to promote vista and other products, I guess thats normal b

    z. That was in the Bangkok Post Database as

I remmember, I feel better knowing that I have not booted my XP for 12 days and counting, If I get to 30 its deleted.

    Its like quiting smoking. :o

  4. ToT or other provider  with IPstar Sat. connection. 256kdown 128kup 1500baht a month up 1024Kdown and 512Kup I think that will go up to 2800Baht month.  Just ask at ToT office install norm about 3500 min 1year.  My 256/128 has worked fine.  No problem and we don't have phone lines around my place at all.  Seems the wired connections are nothing but trouble anyway.

Check out all the post about adsl, and look at most any phone pole and see the mess its connected to.  Your prob lucky they don't have numbers or maybe they just don't want another problem connection. :o

  5. Yes

    No

    Maybe

    and Sometimes

but mostly all of the above.

In windows the driver is often already there and the driver install will check to see if the one they gave is older then the installed one which I have seen many times, then it doesn't even use the new driver.  If it upgrades it would leave old one for roll back driver options to use.  Some mfg don't want that because old driver of that number has bug and its removed.  Never can know for sure, but in Linux the old driver is replaced and roll back is a matter of force version if still around. edit forgot: most drivers are small and inactive one don't slow the system and those not assigned don't conflict with the ones that are.

  6. In the UK they use 'detector vans' to check if you are using a tv without a licence :o

You have to have a licence to use a TV set.  This is like a TV tax of something, that is nuts.  Then they pay people to look for users??  double nuts.

  7. I had this happen.  It the end of the month I still had the 120hr prepay that I get each month on my bill and they had run up 12,000baht without taking anything from the prepay as they would norm. do :D .  One would think that would be easy to fix, but they really wanted me to pay it :D .  I was in the Office over six hours, before they gave in and fixed it.  After the first 3 hours in the office they wanted me to split it with them.  Is that nuts are what??? :o   Just go into the main office and keep taking, always be nice just don't leave.  As it was they did get 1200 of it out of me, but I was worn out. :D

  8. I have ToT ipstar 256/128 service and its been stable and works well at that speed. 3200 install 1500 month min. one year no limits on use, but we have no phone line and to far out for adsl if we did. Have a cell tower in the lot next door, but after a year of using the GPRS the service tanked down to 5kb and became useless. That was 500 baht for 200 hours a month, but was never better then 33kb on a good day anyway.

  9. I try again this morning and still won't open from sign in page. Use linux and Opera.

    - The certificate for "graphics.hotmail.com" is signed by the unknown Certificate Authority "Microsoft Secure Server Authority". It is not possible to verify that this is a valid certificate

I don't know if thats the reason, but at least i am getting something to work with now.

  10. I have had this account at hotmail for 7 years I use it everyday and from any PC, I cafe ect., Then starting yesterday when I try to sign in it says wronge password and or account name.   :o So I try and try.  I check my yahoo and it works fine.  I am on linux with opera so I try firefox still no go,  So I switch over to my XP box and with IE7 bang no problem sign right in. :D  So I try opera on XP (which up to yesterday always worked) and no go, :D  seems the only way to sign in is if I use IE7 all the other browsers are locked out of hotmail.  If I am in messager service on XP or in linux if I click to check mail it signs itself in with any browser no problem :D so I have a back door on linux, but what about when I am not home I have to find IE7 or no hotmail.  I am sure it must be something changed in the sign in page, because the backdoor works vai messager service into the same account even on linux with opera, but can't sign in from the normal sign in page if not using IE7.  I don't know if others have seen this happen, contected MSN twice without respone yet.  Maybe they can't sign in ether? :D

  11. Opera 9.23 has torrents and a built in download manager both of which have worked well for me.  It is also available in linux and I use it in both XP and Linux.  For large downloads like 700mb iso's and the sort I use stardown loader, its free and really works vary well, best thing is it is the vary easy to use, with schduling and auto reconnect ect.  I never had alot of luck with torrent, but Opera seemed to work.  The best torrent I have is Ktorrent in linux it always works great and I don't see why it should be any differant then utorrent because it connects to the same port.  I look at the peers in Ktorrent and I see mostly utorrent in use and alot of the other one Auz or what ever it is.  Alot of people rave about Firefox I have it on my linux and I am sure its fine I just have a habit of using Opera.

(best setting I have found for stardown loader is up to 4 files at a time broken into 6 parts with a min size set at 256k) can load unlimited number of files request into it, each file it finishs it just starts the next inline. Runs over port 80 no configuration.  Right click any download file and go for it.

  12. I v been using it for some time now. It works great, it was one of the few reasons I still have XP.  The yahoo messager is the same program with differant skin for people on the yahoo network, and linux has aMSN which uses the same network and kind of looks like 8.1 in fact I sign in the same account when I use that.  8.1 on windows is alittle easier to use then the linux version, but they do the same stuff, and I am able to knox one more thing off my XP list.  My mother has no problem getting around in 8.1 she set up the webcam and everything herself.  If your only calling friends and family there is no reason to pay a penny.  if you use this for video calls it really works well.  With low res. webcam your going to need your min 128 up side for smooth connection.  IM messages cross networks so I send and receive them with people over on yahoo.  I guess what I am saying is this is a good one for the windows users, I banked many calls over it.

  13. Most odd brand refill kits on the rack don't say anuthing about what printer they refill.  The ones I refill now, I just drop into the local refill booth I don't know what they put in them.  They do start to plug if not used enough, but the warm water thing fixs it.  With the lexmark it nothing to lose print head changes with every new cart. so if refill didn't work out you would be buying one

anyway so use hp in the lexmark and see what happens.

  14. Microsoft Windows Movie Maker (free).

What would be the best format to change into ?

    :o Wiley Coyote

Movie maker handles wmv the best I would say, but output choices are limited.  Mpeg seems to be the most usful but the hardest to get anything change into it mpeg.  (Speaking only in terms of freeware)  avi seems the most in use, but have alot problems using it outside of PCs.  I settled on using avi and a PC.

  15. I have a lexmark all in one, and I was only buying the good cartridge. I tried a refill and seemed to clog, but here in the forum some said just dip in warm water and clean it.  I did that with the refill cart and it works fine.  Been doing  it from time to time for awhile. seems to be OK.  I don't know about the HP but I will be getting one soon for my linux ops. as the lexmark is not well supported in linux.

  16. I was messing with open Office on my Linux alot the past few days. It seems pretty fast to start for me 3 or 4 secounds to open. If ya need it open faster there is a program in the repos like synaptic called quickstart or something along that line that speeds the Office stuff up. I don't have it installed. It uses some ram, but if your using Office alot it would make sense.

  17. Sorry I mean two files and a folder. I would think my updates are up to date with nothing missing or removed. I did the search right after your post. And I checked the updates as late as last week and again today. They look like this:post-48093-1191081715_thumb.jpg

Looks like I have a copy of wups2.dll in a sub dir. a folder and the wups2.dll, but no wups.dll that should be in the same place as wups2.dll. If I am getting this right. Googles wups2.dll found the instaructions again and several sites that want to run a scan on my PC for wups.dll errors. uniblue says they are MS partners ???? Man I have only had my XP on a few hours today and I am missing my PClinuxOC 2007 real bad. This is why linux works for me same BS, better price. (ie cheap bugs make better bugs)

  18. Most rapsh....t file have links exchanged in forums. I have only one time be able to get a download from it.
