I think part of it comes from the inability to excel despite the extraordinary number of local opportunities. Kinda of like living in the Wild West with 'better/modern day' intellect and ability but not being able to handle the dust. The end result is frustration.

    :)

i think this is the best analogy of the thread , simply put , simply understood .

Old adage " You cannot make a silk purse out of a pigs ear "

When opportunity knocks , open the door .

I watch so many times when their phone rings , they just stand there looking at it , ' Answer the bloody thing "

the news from thailand is it still beats living where you are.

Not strictly true in my way of thinking , home is where the heart is and life is what you make of it where ever you may be or what ever you may be occupied by .

No where is perfect simply because people are not perfect , as we age, both our thoughts and our needs change dependent on our general state of health in both body and mind as has been noted on another thread , what one person is satisfied with in the way he lives his/her life , may not fit anothers criteria at any given time . I do my best not to ' Sweat the small stuff " as it is those minor discrepancies that seem to bother people the most , despite enjoying all that Thailand had to offer in as much as places to visit etc , I never truly felt it was a place I belonged for quite a number of reasons that niggled away at my thoughts , I moved on .

  3. r from a Thai in an outside arena. However being where he is I'm sure that he would come from a background of wealth and privilege. Would be interesting to get the perspective of a poor Isaan student having the luxury of an overseas education.

There is a simple solution to your correct way of thinking , find an Issan student of merit and sponsor him/her , that way you would be able to peruse both sides of the coin .

I doubt they will ever give up, and it is fun that a Thai uses this board for news. I am sure there is much more information in the Thai media ? Plus isnt it depressing to see all the people here complaining about your countrymen ?

    ]

I find it more balanced to read what the farang community says about news items than what the censored thai media spouts out...like the necessity of buying a submarine (complete and utter madness). Besides, your news items are quoted from thai media anyway :P.

I don't see many topics complaining about my countrymen and even then the over-generalizations are debunked pretty quickly. Besides, I'm just as annoyed at this business about Preah Vihear and Thaksin as everyone. Thaksin said in a 2006 TIME interview that he's withdrawing from politics forever, yet now he's posting election manifestos. Complete and utter hypocrisy yet people follow him. I just hope they follow his IDEAS and not HIM or (most likely) his money. However the same can be said about the ruling government. Honestly, who cares about Preah Vihear? No one has heard of it 5 years ago and we have plenty of UNESCO world heritage sites, one less isn't going to affect anything. Even then, how can the military be so incompetent? We have all this expensive hardware procured from the west, yet we seem to be getting an equal battering everytime an engagement happens against equipment Vietnam threw away 20 years ago.

And seriously, WHY IN ****s NAME DO WE NEED A SUBMARINE? What are we going to do with it exactly? Sometimes, I wish the entire structure of graft and incompetence would just be replaced...

Id like to see more posts from Thais like this.

The difference between this young man and the majority of Thai is that he had the opportunity to move outside of the box and experience the fact that the world does not revolve around Thailand , he has become more able to see and think about what Thailand is all about from a different perspective . He is also most likely able to realise that much in its education system needs revamping , particularly in the repressive system of ' Brainwashing ' by rote that is holding his country back , much of what is taught is distorted to keep those in power , in power , the needs of the people has become a secondary consideration .

When he returns he should run for prime minister , Thailand could use a whole heap of truth and enlightenment .

I was the worse grade school student ever. Never got even a C because my teachers were crap. Worse than anything I've ever heard in Thailand. In 5th grade I baffled everyone by making all A's. I did it because I had a teacher that could reach me and motivate me. In college I worked my tail off and graduated with a B average because I wanted to.

I have a friend who teaches here at an international school and he dosen't seem to have a problem with his students. There are hundreds of examples of kids doing 180's with the "right" teacher.

Those who can't do; teach. that's the problem.

I can agree to a certain point with what you have written , but one thing you did not manage to learn is the fact that no one can teach you anything unless you have the will and intent to learn , they can only introduce you to their knowledge at hand , as to those that cannot do , teach , is that somewhat along the same lines as ' You can lead a horse to water______________'

No problem extending your visa with the new passport and the previous visa in your old passport , did it myself a few months ago , as to the NGO visa requirements , have no idea .

A business visa allows re-entry as many times as required .

WRONG!!!!only the 6 month and 12 month business extenions allow multiply re-entry.

Prices for the extenions seem all with $10 whomever u use.

I am going to Phnom Penh in July so is it best to take US dollars or can you use a Thai Debit Card in Cambodia. If you can use a Thai Bank Debit card in Cambodia do you get the local currency or US dollars. Thank you

    Techno

Cambodian ATMs pay out American dollars , watch which ones you use as some add on extra charges as per in Thailand , my preference is the Canadia bank as I find they do not charge for the use of their machines . Your own Thai bank will probably have a service charge for out of country use of Cambodian machines , worth a check because it could be expensive , also some banks may not accept Thai bank machines unless they are of the international type .

Hope this is of help .

Short answer , Billabong which is guest friendly with a pool , family style hotel , take your chances with exteranious guest , have a problem which I doubt if you are not with an " In your face ' type of lady , you have various other choices presented to you .

Other posters are only being as helpful as they can under the circumcision .

Dumball can you clarify for me (?) as I'm confused.

You say guest friendly but then take your chances with extraneous guest? In your face type lady, huh?

    (quote)

It had been mentioned that the Billabong does not encourage bringing female company into the hotel other than those whom you have booked in with you , it is a family oriented hotel , but I feel sure that should you take a guest with you that you met in Phnom Penh , there should be no problem if she is dressed in an appropriate manner , not an obvious hooker type .

They have their work cut out for them. Some interesting statistics.

Pornographic websites 4.2 million (12% of total websites)

    Pornographic pages 420 million

Daily pornographic search engine requests 68 million (25% of total search engine requests)

Daily pornographic emails 2.5 billion (8% of total emails)

Internet users who view porn 42.7%

Appears Thailand doesn't make the top censors.

I notice that many on this topic are just having fun and enjoying ourselves, while others are taking it too seriously. We should ALL have the ability to laugh at ourselves and the "missteaks" we all make.

But, a topic like this, if kept fun, can then be a learning lesson for those that truly don't know the difference between similar words.

One would need to be cautious, trying to learn English from TV.

You only have to look at Gravion as a warning what can happen if we spend too much time on the internet. Or you. Or me.

    OP.

How can this be related to Thailand?

Peeple hear loose the plot from time to time about poor English amongst the Thais, but they could of sayed same same about the native speakers

Seems bang on par for General.

Personally, it winds me up something dreadful, as there could be impressionable children like Gravion about who might pick up even more bad grammatical habits (it could happen....)

Yes, but I'm pretty sure the op was referring to the "native speakers" of the english language. Hence my "complaint". :)

Putting commas , periods spaces etc between words , makes it far easier for the reader to understand what is , in fact , written if and provided they are used as intended , many get the wrong impression of a post merely reading monotone , it blurs the mental thought process .

Uh, no dumb all, I meant you put a space between the word and the punctu--oh, nevermind.

Where's a smiley sigh when you need it?

Many years ago in olde England , that is how we were taught to space punctuation marks , it emphasizes the emphasis , so to speak . made it easier for slow readers as in thai visa for example .

Language is merely a means to an end , it enables people to communicate with each other with the best understanding possible at any given time , none of us are perfect nor probably will be , making an attempt to be lucid is far more important than getting the 'T's crossed and the 'Eyes' dotted . There is already enough condemnation in the world today , why add to this with what I feel is only ' Nit-picking' , just get on with life and do your best to understand the other persons point of view , that would at least make two people a tad more happy .

    I agree.

(By the way, you put spaces between all your words and commas or periods.)

Now is the time for all those thousands of ex SAS, MI5, Paras, Special Forces guys to come out of retiremnet and help your host nation a little, surely not that hard with all your unarmed combat and special mission experience to construct a few simple bomb shelters?????...or maybe your too busy on recon as secretly you are instructed by MI6 to spy on Cambodia

Not SAS work , sorry to inform you , but their work is to BLOW them up not BUILD them up , a grenade would take those simple structures out , that is sewer pipe , need galvanized steel as our WW!! shelters were built of , 2 thirds in the ground and fit to live in .

Are you suggesting outside observers should be brought in to do an analysis on the actual numbers of police doing the job they are paid to do ? Talking of helmets , why are not ALL passengers on a motor-cycle not required to wear a helmet when you consider a high number of them are children , the future residents of the country ? On top of that , why does the law (?) not cover that chin straps should be secure as many injuries are caused by this fact , also a law to restrict the safety of such helmets as in no plastic pudding bowls tied on wth string .

Did not see any note of the increased number of vehicles on the roads each year .

"when you consider a high number of them are children , the future residents of the country "

I would have thought that Thai children are already residents. :)

They don't need outside observers. It's pretty obvious to internal observers.

Before they start worrying about chin straps, they need to enforce the wearing. As useless as pudding bowls are, at least they get people used to wearing helmets.

Any one with an iota of common sense would have gathered my inference was to ADULT citizens , the outside observers was in reference to a previous post , those wearing ' Pudding bowls' as helmets may be fortunate enough to survive long enough to see the folly of their ways . My reference to chin straps was directed toward those that DO wear helmets .

Why not post something intelligent instead of nonsensical criticism ? People such as yourself give me a general idea of why you chose to live in Thailand

    Criticism? It's called a joke, that's why there is a :).

And don't you think people need to get used to wearing helmets? It's a step forward, don't you think?

    (quote)

To get used to wearing a helmet , wear a helmet , did your mother tie banana leaves to your feet with string to get you ready for shoes ? It is not a step forward , when the law says wear a helmet it should become mandatory , parents who do not supply helmets for their children should be charged with child negligence even without a law in place . Far too much lakadaisical attitude in Thailand already .

No matter the fracas along the border , Phnom Penh residents just keep doing their daily ' Thing ' unperturbed , have not noticed or heard of any excitement concerning the ' War ' .

The concern is that the Thai ambassador could be recalled or the embassy closed if full blown war erupted and this would affect visa issuance.
