Sugar is a poison to humans.
Cause of many diseases. Sugar feeds cancer.
You dont need to eat any sugar.
However, its addictive, and food manufactures worked this out ages ago.........hence the pumping of everything with loads of sugar.
Agree absolutely on that. I'd recommend the book 'Salt Sugar Fat' by Michael Moss.
"a breathtaking feat of reporting. Michael Moss was able to get executives of the world's largest food companies to admit that they have only one job—to maximize sales and profits—and to reveal how they deliberately entice customers by stuffing their products with salt, sugar, and fat."

I think the Mrs has gone over Sawang Dan Din way; AT's area.
They do rocket launching over there. It's all ladies. I never saw a guy there when I observed a few years back.
First the customer has to go to see the special person (not sure he is a monk) to tell him your desires. Lottery win, riches, fertility, death to cheating b/f (or g/f) or sick hubs (to put him out of his misery naturally), more (or less) sex, lose weight etc. He writes down some stuff on a bit of paper. Then it's over to the main compound where the paper is attached to the rocket with an elastic band; along with other's bits of paper. It's only 1000 baht a pop.
And up the firework goes. Clapping and stomping takes place. Ever so lucky way to spend yer money.
Market forces: A pure case of supply and demand. Bullshi!t is in demand, therefore it's supplied.

{snipped}
I keep reading about Thai doctors telling the general population to stop consuming so much sugar in their diet, as the number of diabetics is increasing alarmingly.
We all know how much sugar is added to Thai food as they do like the sweet taste.
My friend has two members of his wife's family who have fairly recently become diabetics in their forties.
Plus the fact they are getting less exercise now than they used to (not as much manual work as there was)

Be interested to know more of the stories re your friends sticky ends.
'sticky ends' Sounds more like someone leaving a short-time room.
Off on a tangent:
This isn't so much about sticky ends, but about requests for them.
Near our house there's a soothsayer, fortune teller, or as I describe them - professional bullsh!ters.
He was telling my wife a few years ago about requests for his 'special powers' (special needs more like).
The stories relayed were about families with
millionaireferang husbands. It usually involved the mother of the girl married to the 'millionaire', visiting said professional bullsh!ter requesting different things. One was to know when the 'millionaire' would die, in order for the daughter to inherit everything and get on with her life.
The other was the mother requesting said professional bullsh!ter to put a spell on the 'millionaire' so he would die quickly and they could use the inheritance to pay off their debts.
Normal sort of day really...

I'll take that on board Kadilo. Seen two of my farang pals come to sticky ends here. But my wife is different!
Right at the mo' she is out visiting buddha places to get the lottery nos for next time (16th). Not just any old buddhas, but those with special powers.
If she finally gets lucky I could become expendable. But, on the upside, I might get a extravagant sent off. Have to show the villagers how much I was missed.
As opposed to how far the bullet missed by.

Spoke to a monk at the Buddha and he said they had gradually been cut down in the last decade. He spilt the beans on what they do. The trees cannot just be cut. But a dead one can be. The people who want the tree down inject something into the base. The tree gets sick. Leaves fall off, and for a small donation the appropriate authority pronounces it dead; and records it as such. Cutting then gets underway. Being Thailand; this explanation sounds quite reasonable to me. Sad as it is.
That is sad, but as you say, it's basically par for the course.
Business and money are more important than heritage.

The column this week could well be used for the "columnist's" obituary. I will be first to admit I quickly skimmed over the month by month attempts at humor as my mask was getting phlegmed up.
Now before i am accused of "bashing" let me say that I often am impressed by the effort said writer puts in and
his almost perfect use of his native grammar and vocabulary. As for viewpoints, well, cmon, who here at TV really agrees 100% of what is written..... except by ones self, of course.
So , like a Chiangmai somtam that this week was just a little bit under standard, not to mention the PLA RAH that
was added which he knows i can't stand... I will forgive and forget and still let the courier deliver next week's edition. Thankfully the 27G waves on my new Apple BB (big brother) virtual PC will easily penetrate the barbed wire surrounding my compound to keep out ........ you know what !
And to all......... don't worry, be happyyyyyyyyyy
'his almost perfect use of his native grammar and vocabulary' I'm sure Rooster will be over the moon at your almost glowing report. A backhanded compliment?

Like any journalist worth his salt, Rooster always prepares well in advance for features like this. It’s like saving time by penning an ageing person’s obituary before the big day arrives
Perhaps we could write our own obituary and submit it in advance too. That's if any of us are considered newsworthy, of course.

First Owl Log of the year.
A couple of village parties; one still going. A marriage, that gave everyone who donated a nice prezzie.
Boyz shows off the goody bag (prezzie), and the invite. Very useful, the bag, since the big stores stopped automatically issuing plastic bags. Not that we will use it. Just keep it as a reminder of the joyous occasion. Do hope the music stops before bed time.

Quite distressing pics these. Went along the 'dodgy' road and????
What's occurred? Was it a party? Jealous neighbors? The Peelers? Buffaloes? Thailand Rural Highways Agency? I prefer to remember it like this. Have to check this out.

Sugar is on the move.
Nowhere near as much as last year. I haven't seen a wagon overturned yet. Usually do but not this year.

Yesterday Mildred and myself had a close look at the biggest euca. It is getting special treatment. I couldn't find a robust garden fork anywhere last year. Not in DoHome, Global house or any garden center. So had to get one made.
And I put it to work.
I'll give this tree water a couple of times a week during the dry season. See how big we can get it. Maybe some Urea too.

The quietest New Year ever. That suited me as I've stopped drinking. One of my five NY resolutions.
Chai's brother paid me in full for the Kabota. It was a bit strange how it all worked out. His brother Chai wired me 20k baht. Mrs Owl went to Ban Dung, and got the dosh from my card in the Bus station. Did a bit of shopping while she was there; didn't mind. We have to eat after all. The deal was that I was to pay the brother 8k baht out of the 20k. He was going off to Kamprampret to work the big sugar fields the following day. They met up in the bus station.
Mrs got home and gave me the dosh. "But teerak! There is only 7k here?" "Chai brother not have enough money, for go work. So borrow him 5 thousand. He will give back. He good man. He good work."
So, I've got a nice 5k coming to me in a short while. "Nice handbag teerak. Not seen that one before?!" "I have long time silly farang. You never see."
The Irons stuck the knife into the high-flying toffees last night. Let's see what this evening brings. And Van Gerwin getting smashed 5-0.
Drinking my reishi wine as I type. Lovely!! Off to farm later.
Prosperous New Year everyone.
Bye y'all
It's nice to see you're in charge of your life Owl.

My searches just come up with the Ko Phangan tree - claimed as Thailand's tallest.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCluq95VDug
Regarding your wife's comments - it doesn't seem to be a "rubber tree", but does have a resin that can be collected and used in various applications:
Dipterocarpus alatus... also known colloquially as the resin tree ... In Cambodia, the wood is much valued in construction and cabinetwork, when not exploited for its oily resin. Generally, resin is collected for the following uses: wood lacquering, draught-proofing of boats and traditional medicine.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dipterocarpus_alatus
I think you're right on that, regarding it not being used in the traditional sense of a rubber tree. (My wife did say it wasn't the type used on rubber farms.)
Even looking up ยางนา (yang na) from the wiki entry, google still translates it as rubber, (same as ยาง).
I looked in my larger Thai>Engrish dictionary but couldn't find ยางนา.
