They don't.  The issue is that foreigner learners are taught to look for the initial loops of the letters.  Once these are reduced (or removed completely) foreign learners struggle.  Native learners use other characteristics to identify letters, such as the height of the central ^ in letters such as  and , or whether the "neck" is open or closed, as in  and .

Doug Cooper's paper (attached to the previous post) is a good guide to these other characteristics.

    Interesting.

I remember I was taught when writing the letters with loops, to start by forming the loop first. I'm sure Thai kids must be taught the same, as it was pre-printed sheets I used for this, with arrows showing the direction to form the letter.

I hadn't thought about "the height of the central ^ in letters such as  and ," before. That's a very good
    point. Thanks.

This must be an updated version, the current one doesn't use BlueTooth (there's no update available either).

When you install it only give it location and bluetooth access "when the app is active", but in reality does it really matter who knows where your phone is? Google tracks it 24/7 anyway (assuming Android, who really knows what Apple do).

It is rather more convenient than using your QR scanner and the website, it's a lot faster and you don't have to scan when you exit the location, just hit "Check Out".

But, at least at present, it's entirely up to you.

Interesting. When you said, "you don't have to scan when you exit the location, just hit "Check Out"", do you mean need to do that with the MorChana app as well as the ThaiChana? I thought it was all-singing-all-dancing?

I'm 'guessing' here, the reason it wants to use bluetooth (only a 10-30m-ish range) is to detect other app users close by, then hopefully calculate any risk associated with that.

Also you said, "location and bluetooth access "when the app is active"". Can you deactivate it, or will it - like some other apps - just start itself up again?

I looked at some of the MorChana user comments on Android Playstore, a couple of them were complaining it drained the battery too much via bluetooth use. Whether that is adjustable, I wouldn't know.

I came across this info about eight or nine years ago (hence "14 new" at the time), and saved it.

Do all these fonts seem clear to others? For me they are easier to read than the older 'cursive' fonts:

14 new Thai government approved standard fonts - in the public domain:

I'm curious to know which excuse his supporters will find, this time.

Hang around and I’m sure they won’t disappoint.

Just over four years during the election which Trump won, I (as a Brit) said to an American friend, "I'd like to see Trump win."

    He asked me why?

I said, "Purely for the entertainment value." I haven't been disappointment yet, and there's still two weeks to go.

The Ministry of Education’s plan is also aimed at promoting the employment of foreign teachers, addressing some existing regulations that have complicated the process,

intrigued to know what this will be

A couple of years ago I was asked by the head teacher at a local school if I'd be interested in 'helping' to teach the kids English conversation in an 'informal position', and for free.

I said yes, as long as they organised a work permit for me (even with no salary).

Then I had to explain to the head teacher what a work permit was. I didn't hear from them again.

All these little quips about football that you all keep dropping in, are they just designed to keep that TBL's away?????

    Football !

I was wondering what they were on about...

I think we're on the same page here!

    I'm allergic to sport.

At school I was always the last to be picked for football - I always thought 'drawback' was a football term.

Its not just sugar its also refined white rice which has a similar effect to eating sugar. Refined white rice as any doctor will tell you is total carbohydrates just like sugar and is a growing menace in the far east causing diabetes at a fairly young age. Look up the history of white rice which is a fairly new food source and the growing obesity in the far east population. I've seen this happening in Thailand over the years (20) I have been here or visiting, initially fat kids or people were a great rarity but not today its not all down to sugar or western junk food there is a far more dangerous unseen problem happening with the Thai population on a daily basis due to eating white/processed rice.

Yes, I just remember doctors specifically mentioning added sugar referring to Thai dishes.

Now I'm not certain on this, but apparently sticky rice is even worse than ordinary rice - regarding sugar content?

We buy red or brown rice as it is less processed (hopefully!)

I'm sure we all remember the phrase 'monkey house rice' which referred to the cheaper, unprocessed rice served in prisons.

Now that more people realise it's better for you, the price has increased accordingly. Supply and demand I suppose.
