  1. What mail order services do you use in Thailand where you get shipments from inside the country with no duty? I just used an electronic parts mail order service (recommended on an old TV thread) and had a really positive experience. My questions were answered from New York, credit card processed in Australia, and shipment arriving from Bangkok two days after the order. What a world we live in!

So what do you mail order here? If you have an leads on a radio-controlled model aircraft mail order service, I would appreciate that a lot.

  2. Dear all,

yo you know a place where I can rent a CH 701. I live in Thailand and thought about buying a cheap Zenair but I would like to fly/rent one of those first.

    Please help me :-)

    thank you

Not sure who publishes this blog, but there are some interesting newsbits and links within it

Phil.... If you back-track through this thread, you'll find a TV member that has a really nice one. You might send him a PM to see if you could get a ride in it. (Edit: Back-tracked and found it on post#103.)

  3. The Ping river comes from dozens of drainage basins, only a very few which happen to have dams on them. The main reason for the 2005 flooding (from what I understand from an in-law and ag official in Mae Taeng) is that the Mae Taeng river basin which drains into the Ping river near Mae Taeng got a huge amount of sustained rain. That large basin has no large dam (just a small canal diversion dike), and the water actually caused flooding in the Ping Valley above where it flows into the Ping. (It back-flowed up toward Mae Ngat Dam in the big wide valley up there). The water could not all go down the Ping, but when it did, that caused flooding in Chiang Mai.

As I write this, the heaviest rains of the season are occurring here. Yikes. Hopefully Gonzo will build a big boat!

  4. Thanks Mestizo and Joop for those reports. Five years ago the flooding was so bad that the Night Bizarre was under a meter of water. Pumps running everywhere after the river receded. It hasn't been the same kind of rainy season this year though I don't think. Back then, there were days of non-stop rain that you could feel pushing down your umbrella. Let's hope the Mother Ping can stay within her banks! She is certainly running higher than normal.

  5. I've also noticed a lot more floating plants than ever before. They were moving pretty good tonight as it looks like the Mae Ping might be getting ready to flood a bit. When I went under the Super Highway south of the Holiday Inn area, water was gushing into the underpass pretty fast. Lot's of folks looking at the river as well. Any one else living near the river want to report on the levels?

  6. I went in and cleared and reset my cookies and restarted the browser this morning and it seemed to work, but tonight I've had to sign in again.

Yeah, I noticed this problem about three days ago. Very annoying since I sign in about every year or so!

At any rate, I cleared my cookies and things are back to normal, staying signed in. Using FireFox, and I do NOT have 3rd party cookies enabled.

  7. Bought my first Klein Mantra in 1996 and fell in love with how it climbs steep single-track as well as how it fits. Still building them up when I find parts on Ebay. Road bikes make my back hurt now that I am older so I use the Mantra for road riding as well as trail riding. Fox shocks, Hope hydraulic disks.

Surprised to see this bike. I bought a Klein Team Super when he was just starting out. Mine was so early that it was before he started issuing serial numbers. One day I got a letter from him to keep an eye out for a stolen Team Super, and since then he has used serial numbers.

Gary Klein did design and build some fantastic bikes. It's too bad the Mantra never took off as the single pivot point way up out of the mud never needs maintenance. All other full suspension bikes eventually need to have all the pivots rebuilt from the dirt that gets inside. The Mantra is one of those bikes that you just ride until the chain wears out! Klein did make one mistake on this bike as the rear dropout faces backwards and was designed too short. (Not much area for the wheel to grab on to.) You have to keep the skewer rather tight.

  9. Every once in a while, the 150 baht bandits only let you take 10,000 baht and not 20,000 baht per day. Anyone know why this is the case? In talking with friends, K Bank, Bangkok Bank, and Siam Commercial are limited to 10,000 baht for the last two days. Anyone know what is up?

  10. I think I'd give HWY 1317 east of the ring roads as the "most dangerous" award. Seems every time I drive a car or motorcycle on it I have to swerve to avoid a head-on collision. It's the type of road that really makes you appreciate life, once you are safely at your destination that is.

  11. Any medication (or alcohol) you take on a plane will affect you differently as your blood oxygen level is lower. (Aircraft at high altitudes are only pressurized to 6000 feet or so. It is enough to make a difference.) Also note that there have been many cases of panic attacks using Ambien on aircraft. Be careful up there! I've found that a single Benedryl to be remarkably effective and I'm a big guy.

  12. Anyone have any info on Lychee, Lomyai, and Durian causing sweats? My wife says not to eat too much as they commonly cause it. I had a whole bunch of Lomyai last night (out right now and delicious... light brown and it has a dark red hard seed inside) and woke up in the middle of the night all sweaty. This never happens to me so it has to be the berries.

  13. Since we have complicated directions, maps, and simple directions to TCA, here is a Google Earth kmz file as well. Nice orderly shop and a factory authorized service center for Fox and Campy. It is a bit difficult to find as it doesn't look like a shop, has no sign, just the letters TCA on the building.

On a bit of a tangent, does anyone have a GPS enabled cell phone that helps you find places with a .kmz file? Seems like a useful application but I've not seen that yet. Even GPS receivers seems slow to pick up the .kmz format.

  14. Is that your shop across the way from Loi Kroh? It says Tony's big bike, so it must be yours ehh? :whistling:

Urm, yeah, cuz I'm the only guy in Thailand named Tony, right?

So then where's your shop, you know, the place you make carbon fiber and try to push here on the forum. The warehouse, where's the warehouse? C'mon, your the man, your cool and quick witted and you have a 'BigBike', can we all just have a chance to be as cool as you?

    Please?

Sorry for the late reply- just got back from an epic 4 day 2200+ km ride-

Erm... wow dude- you have some issues don't you? loco.gif

FYI I don't have a retail shop but my warehouse is located in Minburi. It's not open to the public and sorry, but you'll never be as cool as me :cheesy:

    Ride On!

Tony.... Hey, I know where that pic was taken! Were you able to dodge the rains?

  15. The local Health Department actually walked through property and homes around Wat Pong Noi not far from Chiang Mai University last year looking for containers of water and other sources. We had a vase of bamboo in the house and sure enough, it had mosquito larvae in it. Any little bit of water seems enough, and the outdoor bathroom vats are especially problematic. We've known two people that have come down with Dengue in the last three months. Getting rid of the breeding location is the right thing to do.

  16. These pics fortunately are not from my home. The one with the diaper pins is from a river restaurant right on the water in Thaton. The, er, "connections" were right at chest level when I went on in. Food was good but I was careful leaving.

The other pic is from a restaurant east of Chiang Mai. Every night the staff turns the lights on and off by holding the wires so they can work the switches. It actually looked worse than than this when they first built the sala. I remarked on it to the owner and he said they were going to clean it up. This photo is of the result and you can see how the spiral wrap and black tape they put on did the job!

You really have to be careful in Thailand. We were walking into a restaurant during the rainy season last year and wires laid across the walkway to power lights along the walkway were sparking like crazy. We found a different way in.

  17. Anyone know dates for CM cycle races 2010? Re the climbs up Doi Suthep and Doi Tung...what are the distances average gradients?

Note that the original post is from 2007, so Bluedan is looking for the 2010 schedule. Anyone got the dates? MTB Cross Country race dates would be nice to see too.
