  1. So quiet on the CBR-150 thread just like the roads.....I've been up north a bit several times over the past several weeks and no big bikes on the road at all. Just step-throughs, loansharks on their CBR-150's, and me. It's been wet though.

  2. Thank you for your kind comments... it is indeed as Greenside said, we're selling to concentrate on being a family and Tuskers makes that fairly difficult with the late nights and long hours. We will really miss it but are very excited about the next phase in our lives :D

Greenside - 'glowing' is extremely generous.... I would have used the word sober ;)

Rachele.. Congratulations to you and Chas! Wonderful news and Thip and I wish you all the best. Besides riding elephants across Thailand, opening a great bar, having a baby, and being two of the nicest people in Chiang Mai, any plan is bound to be a good one.

  3. I don't use Time Machine for back-ups as the CM Computer Club turned me on to SuperDuper. The cool thing about SuperDuper is that the back-up you make is bootable. I've taken my external drive to a friend's Mac, plugged in the FireWire cable, and booted up to my exact desk top and files. Just like having your own computer! Do a search and check it out.

  4. My experience is that in 5 years, I have spent maybe 20 minutes total debugging software problems with my MacBook. My past experience with a half-dozen Windows-based machines involved entire nights up with some help-desk trying to get the computers back up. I would never go back, but I'm just a casual user and don't like problems.

  5. Canuck, Take your better half to the land office when you have land in question and they can tell you if it is possible, how long it will take, etc. There is one type of land (which sounds something like nor sor 3) that can usually convert in less than 30 days. The land office is your best bet for answers. Other types will not convert, or will have long approval delays. Search on this topic and you'll find more scoop.

  6. Just had our third case of dengue within a hundred meters of the house during the last month. Getting used to seeing the health department sprayers as they try to kill the offending carriers!

Fortunately, it seems to be a mild strain where folks are sick for about ten days. I still see a lot of standing water in the plants by the street though so this is not going away soon. The public health department should try to educate with brochures as well as spraying. :ermm: They used to do that, but now they just spray.

  7. Had occasion a few years ago where quite a large wire transfer between Singapore and Thailand "disappeared" for 31 days, made the transfer went back to work and never thought any more about it, till 29 days later got home and found it hadnt appeared in the account it was suppose to.

Call to my bank in Singapore...Yes Sir transfer effected the day instructed to account given etc etc...

Called the Thai bank..no have, no have....Singapore no do, Singapore no good...blah blah

Call to Singapore bank Manager....Thailand bank says you have f*kced up....Bank Manager in Singapore on phone to Thai bank and turns the Thai bank..bless their little hearts had decided to transfer the amount into a "holding account" and not put it in the account as instructed....

Gulp! That's not helping my stress level! :o Glad to hear you did get it straightened out though.

  8. Jimmy... Good luck to you! I think we are finally getting started too. Here's a rough sketch....... Two bedrooms, two bathrooms down with a garden/party area on the second floor just to keep the sun off the first floor. We found property two meters above the floods of 2005 after almost buying 2 meters under the floods of 2005!

Please post your concept and plans. Would love to compare notes.

Plans look great. Have you sorted out the structural aspects/costs of the big overhangs and spans ?

Bill, there will be pillars on the big overhangs, but I am going to work with a designer that's experienced with cantilevered floors. This is just the concept and floor plan that will be handed off to someone that knows what they are doing. I have a version that has the pillars put in to see what it looks like but I just didn't take any pics of the 3D view.

Interesting design, that should keep the downstairs area really cool. You'll get some rain water into the upstairs area as it doesn't seem the roof overhangs extend very far. You could put in some drains here and there to address that.

Thanks. The drains are a good idea. A friend has a wooden house similar to this and I am always amazed how cool his living area is. Keeping the sun off the ceiling and walls really helps.

  11. I've just got a fairly nice rental, but reading all of this, though my place just looks avg for the neighborhood, I've gone ahead n purchased better locks including a deadbolt as per Ollylama's suggestion. We have some cops in the neighborhood, but still you never know who will or won't see anything. Generally safe here, but I figure better quality locks will add to the steps if a break in were attempted. Funny thing, going to Home Pro to price some of the locks n bolts, I found some 500 locks n handles that were on sale down to 299B - sold ! And then a deadbolt for another 600. Not much to spend 1,200 B on a little peace of mind. Oh and then pricing the cheap piece of crap ones on my house currently, found out they're 2 for 99B ! No wonder the keys got rusty and they take so much coaxing to lock right. Should've done this a year ago ! A little paranoia's a good thing.

That's a good investment! Put in a loud burglar alarm too, as that is also a good deterrent. I built one that triggered an air horn back in Iowa and when I got broken into, the punk couldn't handle the sound level and split with nothing. The whole neighborhood was out in force by the time I got home. (Just too bad no one caught him and broke his arm!) I had wireless alarms in my car that put two guys in jail as well so it pays to protect yourself. Starting with good locks is a good thing to do.

  12. I'm looking for a wireless cellular solution for my laptop that will work between Chiang Mai and Chiang Dao (when very near a cell site) and am wondering how satisfied users are with the 1000 baht unlimited AIS solution. Can it really keep up a radio stream or torrent link for hours, or does it have to be reset frequently? I had a wireless cellular (CDMA) modem back in the USA and streams would only hang on for about 10-20 minutes max. Have heard mixed reports here so am looking for the true scoop.

  13. I was robbed twice, first in a hotel in BKk(they left the fire doors open)he started on the top and worked his way down and the police were useless.

But the second time was in my small apartment block and the Thai owners son caught one of them, beat the shit out of him and broke his arm,got all my stuff back and his dad then called the cops and the little toad got a year in prison!.

This was done to make sure all the other toe-rags knew what would happen to them if they came back.

A nice piece of rough justice:ph34r:

    Like Mr. Burns says, "Exxx-czell-ant!"

  14. I tried those equations on a prior post, but there seems to be a missing paren somewhere in my head! Here's a nice website calculator that is pretty handy. Look at the bottom of the page and you can find the calculator. Note that the distances are in feet.

    http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm

Would be curious to know what nominal currents people are using. Like on poster said, it is very unlikely to have every appliance, air con and light on at the same time. Anybody using a clamp-on amp meter that has some empirical data?

  15. We've had two friends have thieves in their house in the middle of the night so we put in a burglar alarm that we activate at night and of course when we are not at home. Keep those bedroom doors locked when you sleep. Home invasion is not a fun thing and it seems to be getting more common in the cities.

  16. Once Dengue appears in an area, it is time to be very alert. One thing I didn't know is that a skeeter has to bite an infected person, and then cruise around for a week in order to be successful in infecting others. That is the reason that entire families and entire classrooms come down with the disease. Eradication of the breeding areas (standing water) is about the only way to stop the disease.

Here are a couple of weblinks that I haven't seen on this thread for a while but well worth reading.

  17. It could be the result of too much smiling from riding your CBR-150...... Seriously though, if it reoccurs, get it checked out. I've never heard of "blind spots" from too much computer use, but that is indeed a symptom some have from migraine headaches. I agree with gotlost too that internet forums are the last place to get advice on medical stuff unless it is merely an annoyance.

  18. Gonzo.... I heard there was some minor flooding in Chiang Dao three days ago, so maybe that water is finally making it down to Chiang Mai. Four days ago there was a bit of flash flooding behind Doi Kham in Chiang Mai. Water was deep enough to go over a few bridges causing the pavement to get a bit undermined. I took a long mountain bike ride south of the Sameong road yesterday toward Op Khan and there were many places where the water gushed down the mountains causing erosion and lots of mud to ride through. The rains certainly were widespread.
